    It's keys. The Toto guys were prodigies and A-list session guys (by the time they were 18 years old - they were early and mid 20s when they did this tune) and Yamaha always made sure to get their newest synths to David Paich and Steve Porcaro. These were some of the first "world instrument" synth patches ever recorded.

    Toto members were session guys originally. Quincy Jones used several of them on Thriller because they were such pros.

    When David Paich wrote the song, he said that it came to him almost complete that it was a level above his pay grade or talent. He said the song was about man's love of a continent, Africa, rather than just a personal romance. He had watched a documentary about the suffering in Africa. He said that the images just wouldn't leave his head, so thus the song. Something bigger than him aided him in writing the song.

    Jeff Porcaro on drum was the leader of Toto.....& perhaps the G.O.A.T session drummer. They say he played on over 1200 tracks all by the time we sadly lost him from a heart-attack at the age of 36. He was legendary for 1 or 2 takes. They called him The Drum-Doctor. And if he felt an artist or band didn't require his services or were dragging their heels in the studio he would say: 'I'm just going out to make a phone-call.' And would not return unless they had their shit together. A true legend and a gentleman too.

    I had an amazing chance meeting with Jeff Porcaro, the drummer in Orlando, Fl at Disney World. He was on vacation with his wife. What a great guy!!!!!!!! Very, very nice, and talkative. We talked about Boz Scaggs, Toto, and Pete Townsend for like 15 min...he thanked me for being a music fan...just a real treasure. We miss you big guy!! RIP Jeff

    Of course I agree when you mention this great bands, Yes, ELO, Supertramp and Toto. They are all great! And are loved in my country, Chile.
    All of them, except from Yes I think, did have shows in Chile. I saw the ELO once, and I was so happy. ELO, Supertramp and Toto were always in my fathers car set of cassetes and cd's :-)

    The sound you refer to is called a marimba. It is a xylophone type of instrument from africa but is made of wood. As one can hear the wood gives it a warmer, more rounded sound than a modern xylophone. In this recording the sound is produced by an electrionic keyboard.

    The Yamaha DX7 was a new type of synthesizer that emerged at the time. It used frequency modulation to generate the timbres. Actually, phase modulation, but close enough. It could do those type sounds with striking realism.

  • @trevorholden7423
    @trevorholden7423 2 года назад

    The band's name comes from the clever usage of a Latin phrase (in toto) ie if a group of people were asked 'how are you all?' In Latin they might answer - we're 'in toto' (totally altogether). Mark Knopfler also grabbed this clever idea ie answering the question 'How are you faring man?' 'No good bud I'm in dire straits' (a position of acute difficulty)..

    I think the instrument you're asking about is a marimba or a xylophone--some wooden, malleted percussion instrument. I can't tell if it's acoustic or a sample on a synth, but that's what i've always thought it was.

    • @stephensmith3111
      @stephensmith3111 2 года назад

      I think you may be right. In Wikipedia, the quest musician list includes Joe Pocaro - percussionist, marimba. It does sound slightly processed, but that could have been done in the mix down. I need to hear this over a good set of headphones. It also lists Lenny Castro on congas, shakers, and additional percussion. The standard drum trap set is great, but there are so many other flavors to be had.

    I haven't read all these comments, but as to that instrument, it is a small hand harp that you pluck. a friend of mine brought one back from a trip to African in the early 70's. It was about the size of a half a coconut (it was not however made from a coconut). It had a hollow body with a slot across the front face. then it had 8 or 10 thin metal strips that you could change position to play different tones. you held it like you are texting on an oversized phone, and using your thumbs, you plucked the exposed metal strips.
    Really like the channel.

    Toto pronounced like Dorothy's dog in the Wizard of Oz. But then again maybe you never saw the Wizard of Oz like most people from my generation.
    Weezer did a cover of this song with Weird Al Yankovic. Weird Al was dressed up as the lead singer and I do believe he sang lead. I think Weezer did an album covering songs they grew up with, because they have a cover of "Take on Me" by Ah Ha, with that boy from Stranger Things. Which I'm pretty sure you have heard before, because "Take on Me" seems to be in every movie made about the 80's. It's a great song and another iconic music video.

    Hold the Line is a great one by Toto. A lot of people here will probably recommend Rosanna - as do I, however, a very popular, though underrated cut they did called Pamela is better, in my opinion. Pamela has more of a funky groove to it.
