ABOUT DRESSRELIEF
My name is Mariel, and I started getting into fashion in the past few years and am learning so much about it. I'm drawn to fashion as I believe it is an art form that not only allows individuals to express themselves but also creates a history and record of different time periods and generations. I've had a lot of fun learning how to put together outfits and use different styles to tell a story through the way I dress. Dirty Secret of the Rockstar/Sleaze Aesthetic: it comes from having little money & living out of a suitcase. It is an Alt Capsule wardrobe depending on Accessories to give variety to looks.
I personally think that the name 'Rockstar Girlfriend' can be open to interpretation, you either ARE the rockstar, or youre dating the rockstar.
Cool video! It's interesting because I thought the term rockstar girlfriend meant the girlfriend was a rockstar and that you were dating a cool rockstar girl. I never saw it the other way around.
Interesting that you saw it that way and I like that interpretation a lot better! Unfortunately I think it does stem from girlfriends of rockstars though considering women like Alexa Chung and Kate Moss are cited as inspiration 😅 (no hate to them ofc it just sucks that all they’re diminished to is being someone’s gf!)
@@dressrelief Yeah after seeing the inspiration of the style, I unfortunately see how it was initially created to look. This is a good video to emphasize that women can be cool on their own and not just as an 'accessory' like the style initially demonstrated.

I really love this video! I think it's great that you talk about the history of this aesthetic and some of the controversies of it, i also like that also shared affordable ways to shop the basics! Overall this video is amazing!
It's so odd to me that so many of the faces used to represent the indie sleaze era are these white women, when I mostly remember MIA, Santigold, and Karen O. Lots of spandex and an 80s influence. Peaches was also at the forefront ("Fuck the Pain Away"). The label includes the postpunk resurgence, electroclash, and the crunchier brand of hipsters, so there is a lot of inspiration to work with.

Also what you mentioned about the hard lifestyles is so true. Back then and now, partying and substance use is so glamorized. Then you look up a lot of the people involved in the scene, or similar scenes, and they are no longer around. Or you eventually have people dropping dead at age 50 from the lingering effects. You see that kind discussion pop up a lot in the sidelines.
I’ll look them up! I wasn’t really involved in that scene at that time so i may be ignorant regarding who were the biggest influences!
@@dressrelief you are the opposite of ignorant! The articles always list these white women (mostly non-artists) who I barely registered at the time, and idk if I was out of the loop or if the writers are just goofy in who they choose to represent it.

Glad I could bring it to your attention! Yeah it seems harmless on the surface, but when you think about it there’s no reason we can’t just call it the rockstar aesthetic imo!
Not related to this aesthetic at all, but I'd love to see a video on grandmacore. It has a lot of similarities to cottagecore, but I feel like it's different enough that it could be its own video. But, maybe not. Haha. I feel like in dress it's similar to cottage core, but in home decor it's pretty different. Anywho, just a suggestion!

i have always fit this aesthetic very well even before it was given a name, in terms of fashion, i play guitar and also love bands liked led zep, the beatles, nirvana etc and i love it (as u can probably tell by my username lmao) but i definitely hope that people dont romanticize drug usage because of it and it becomes a more inclusive aesthetic.
