  • Mynydd Cilfach-yr-encil is a 445m hill in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. You've probably never heard of it, which is why I think this is probably the best hill you've never heard of.
    This hill forms part of 'The Miners' list, a list I am compiling of the best hills in South Wales.

    Hi Kev, another cracking upload, looking forward to the coming months and more hikes/camps. I was up Cribyn and Fan Fawr in Feb on the few nice days we had! Drove past the mighty Fan Gyhirych this afternoon looking majestic covered in snow. ATB.

      Thanks Duke. I'm currently pitched up at 824m making the most of the snow. Some amazing views today, fingers crossed for some sort of sunrise...

    Not one I have walked Kev but having watched this I am deffo putting it on my list. You had some great conditions and fabulous views looking north. Loverd that craggy outcrop you passed, deffo some potential for anyone carrying a camera I reckon. Keep up the good work Kev. Al

    Stunning route Kev. Would love to do that one time.
    Loved the photo of the Beacons at 12:00 also that view right near the end looked like a nuclear bomb with a rainbow in the middle - incredible 👌❤️

    Some good content. I cycle this route on occasions. If I walk it I park at taff bargoed or the climbing centre and do a nice circular route.
    The valleys have some amazing walking and I'd prefer to see the hills of bannau brychuniog from afar. It's unusual not to see red kites there or Gelleagear common, pen Y garn bugail is.
    As you've noticed fly tipping has been addressed due to both ends being gated.

      Ah, I did try to walk it from Taff Bargoed but the route I'd planned had a big private property sign on a gate so I couldn't connect with the access land.

    • @AB-qp6yj
      @AB-qp6yj 5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes i think your talking about the gate on the north end of climbing centre. There is a right of way,not marked on mh is map,but is on the definitive map that goes past tyrywen house. This is accessed by walking along the main road toward bedlinog and then going down the first left minor road. In the last 2 to 3 year the council won the case of contested access by the owner of tyrywen.

      @@AB-qp6yj that's interesting to know as I've enjoyed walking around that area. I'll have a nose on the map, see if I can find that route. Thanks for sharing.

    The open cast has stopped producing coal. I think it was last week that the last train load of coal went from there down through ystrad mynach.

    Yes it's an odd one? "Mynedd Cilfach yr Encil" sounds like sortof - Mineth (hard th) kilvach ehr Encil, means something like, The creek of the retreat??? (not including Mynydd, Mountain), nice local vid, I sympathise with you! cars, they always let you down, only 2 days ago, I went over a pothole (did not notice?) it ripped my offside tyre? replaced with a space saver tyre, but only go 100 mile and only drive up to 50mph, I cannot get it fixed until Tuesday, I am laid up till then?

      I'll ask my daughter next time I see her, as she's a Welsh speaker so she might be able to help me with pronunciation.
      My car was in the garage for a month and it cost me £2,500!

    Hi Kev, if it's ok, I'm looking after some local knowledge. I'm planning a walk to start at the Roman camp in Gelligaer, walk south cross the valley, walk north along Mynydd Cilfach-yr-encil, recross the valley and return along the ridge at Merthyr Common. Currently my crossing points are through Taff Bargoed County park and then all around the north side of the spoil tip at Garth Fawr. Is that the best route to link the 2 valleys or are there other crossing points between the 2? Thanks for your help!

    • @TheWalkingKev
      @TheWalkingKev  4 месяца назад +1

      I've walked up to the Roman camp in Gelligaer and then North from that point following the Rhymney Valley Ridgeway walk. I'm not quite sure how to access Mynydd Cilfach-yr-encil from Taff Bargoed Country park. The road up first goes through a replying centre / tip and signs say no public access. I'll have a look tonight at my maps and check which parts I've walked and get back to you. Sounds a good loop though, lovely part of the world.

    • @TSOliveira23
      @TSOliveira23 4 месяца назад +1

      @@TheWalkingKev that would be great, thank you! Those two crossing points were picked more based on what I could see on the map / pictures as areas with some sort of public access, but tbh I'm not that bothered where to cross the valley provided I can walk the full length of Mynydd Cilfach-yr-encil, Mynydd Y capel and Gelligaer (both your videos inspired me to do a longer loop across both :) )

    • @TheWalkingKev
      @TheWalkingKev  3 месяца назад +1

      @@TSOliveira23 you've plenty of footpaths heading South from the Roman Fort. You can take the Rhymney Valley Ridgeway which is pretty well signposted and maintained, that will take you near to Taff Bargoed park, I think if you snuck through the dump then that road should take you up to Mynydd Capel and the access land, you can then walk unimpeded to Mynydd Cilfach-yr-encil and then crossing over at some point back into the valley and back up to the other Ridgway, where you can definitely head South back to the fort on many tracks.
