Regarding India's first contact with Arab trade - Everywhere in the world where polytheism has eroded the first contact has been in the form of trade {Rome, Greece etc.}. People don't really took into account religion since Indians back then were unaware of separatedness of 'Identities' e.g. Indians kept referring to Muslims as Turushkas for ages even after living under their rule but Muslims had a developed sense of identity while Indic communities did not. I have read all these kinds of inferences {Bhkti, Sufi, Pirs, Saints, Sampradayas etc.} & the one thing always fascinates me - Why don't Indian scholars question about agency of Hindus or natives with regards to learning about Islam without conversion ? The local people used to follow local pir/saints because they might have found them to be the best way to get their message to local elites {similar to modern bureaucrats} why then call it religious interfeces when all it was a local form of socio-political arrangement ?
