frantic loops around a bookstore deciding whether or not you really need a book is the realest experience 😭😭really does ruin the mood tho
i was in fight or flight
THE WAY I KNEW WHAT SPECIAL EDITION YOU WERE GONNA PULL UP 😭😭
you must be one of my super fans, you stupid pervert
Your purchase of The secret history’s first edition resonated a lot with my urge to buy multiple editions of Maurice by EM Forster (my fav). I can’t pin down exactly why but holding first edition or rare/vintage print of your favorite book is truly one of the best feelings
i cant pin it down either...all of the copies of maurice ive seen are ugly!! its part of why i havent picked it up yet hahah
jane eyre introduced me to classics and seeing it on your vintage book haul just feels perfect and made me smile ♡
i have like 4 copies now and still havent read it 😭
Inferno is really good. If you like Hozier’s music, his latest album’s songs are based on Inferno and the different circles of hell. There’s a RUclipsr named Honor Luca who broke down the whole album with the Inferno references. It was really good.
i love a good hozier song... i need to look into that thank you👀
this is exactly the type of long form content i needed after getting wrist surgery from trying to snowboard 😇 keep it coming pls luv u
oh my god i hope youre healing up well
You walking around in loops in the bookstore contemplating about whether or not to buy a book is so real💀
i cant go back to barnes after that... i think the employees have me on their hit list 😭
Just the other day I was looking for vintage books!! UGH they’re so awesome, I love how they’ve been through many years of human uhhhh civilization
amen. and they smell so good i want to eat them

I love book hauls and getting amazing books! And browsing the library shelves and pick a few books to bring home to read :) THE BEST FEELING :D
me too me too. ive been really digging a library haul recently
@@cs0p Amazing! Libraries needs more love
Dodie smith’s 101 Dalmatians is definitely in my top five favorite children’s books. so so and witty and hilarious but definitely emotional/sweet! It’s amazing
Once Upon A December is BY FAR my favorite holiday romance. It’s like actually perfect, not cheesy, and so tasteful and heart felt. It’s so Christmas nothing compares 👏🏼
mmmmm i will peruse barnes for this...
the little christmas lights in the background are such a vibe
i love christmas lights 😭
CHARLES! Thank you! 😍 omg I hope you LOVE Cold Mountain - the writing is STUNNING!
im excited to pick it up 👀👀
I love that you are like "I have no idea what this is, never heard of it, but it looks cool". This channel is so good
that's one of my guiding principles when buying for books ;)
Im so freaking jealous😮 I cant believe you found that at GOODWILL!!
i know goodwill has the best steals...
Every so often your excitement shins thru past the character and its so trippy. Ur crazy and a very fun watch. 10/10
🫣thank you...
I was screaming last night that I needed another csop video, so thank you! First edition of The Secret History is an amazing addition to your collection, congratulations! I've recently been scrubbing the internet and Goodwills for the 25th anniversary white edition with no avail. I recommend listening to David Sedaris books on audio. His voice and cadence make the stories so much more convincing. When I was 10/11 listening to them with my mother in the car, i had no idea they were satire. I'd just think to myself, "wow this man has a very interesting life." Also given the fact that I probably didn't have the cognitive ability to understand satire at that age, I still loved his work then and now.
ok im getting excited for Sedaris.. someone else mentioned audio. this has solidified my plan to do audio for him. you have to tell me if you find the 25th edition...
AH this is so random but I found my 25th anni copy on eBay!! I set up an email notif so that if someone lists it, I would immediately get to check out the listing LOL I hope u find it, it took me months of searching
@@tiachu omg TIA it was your video showing the coffee stained copy that you have that made me want it so bad haha this is so funny! i love your channel as well
Thank you for introducing me to Edward Gorey! So beautiful!!!
its my job to spread gorey gospel. ;)
Ooh, now I’m itching for a little goodwill book hunt….
Your comment on confusing David Foster Wallace and David Sedaris had me choking on my latte 😂😂
if im being honest i still dont know the difference. revengelobster is a great username and its got me thinking of DFW... (consider the lobster....)
Just what I need! A video from you! Please save me from my everlasting crushing despair - *your biggest fan* 🤪

@@cs0p A modern day hero we didn't know we needed 👌
You've just now introduced me to the Folio Society and I've spent the last 30 minutes combing the website in awe at the beauty (and prices).
HAHA truuuuly. i've been browsing their website religiously these days. tell me if you get one.....no dont then i will too...ok tell me anyway....
I read "Atonement" for school. It's definitely a slow burn (heightened by the multiple POVs - though that is justified through the thematic focus on perspective) but I found the way that it explored the power of storytelling and the consequences of and guilt that arises from one's wrong immoral actions very compelling. McEwan takes the concept of making pure-intentioned and ignorant mistakes with negative consequences, something many of us relate to - especially as we reflect upon our youth- to its logical extreme. There is a real art with which he creates a believable protagonist, who is easy to empathize with, but impossible to sympathize with. This book definitely made me brush up against and reflect upon my own beliefs about forgiveness, right and wrong, and the course of action after we inevitably do harm. Would recommend.
mmm youvve got me intrigued thank you...
the sassy eye roll is back 🙂
what a special first edition to have
and here to stay ;) it is so special i want to cry thinking about it. truly a prized possession
i'm having such a shitty evening so far and seeing your video is such a relief

It’s cause of you that I’m on the alana train now, LOVE HER, and now I’m itching to read cold mountain after watching her favorite contemporary novels video
ALSO, crazy how last video you were reading the Kissinger biography and the man JUST died
I KNOW i wondered if any of my fans would notice the Kissinger thing. i was spooked when i got the NYT notification. I want to be the conductor of the alana train, she is so great

thank you baby.
Atonement is SO good! I read it like 7 years ago in high school for our English lit class, and I remember I considered it a masterpiece.
omg ok ill pick it up
I was reading The Secret History yet again - as one does ,and decided to listen to Donna Tartt narrating the audiobook at the same time - it’s free on YT but I noticed she adds sentences and shortens or rearranges some sentences in audiobook . The vintage contemporary copy i have has a small typeface 557 pages . Now I need to add lots of marginalia and buy a fresh copy of the book 📕 a hardcover this time .
my friend listed to it and loves it! its always odd when audiobooks dont match up to print. i wonder if subtle edits continue to be made in newer editions for certain books.
Ah! I remember the day I bought my 1st ed. Secret History too. I mulled on it for weeks, paranoid that it would come arrive in anything less than perfect condition, but the used-book gods were kind to me, and it’s been the crown jewel on my shelf ever since.
i swear i was twitching at the door afraid the package wouldnt arrive or arrive on fire in pieces. you might be the only person who seems to match my love of DT. interviews and first editions...you get it.
She is, in my rather staunch opinion, inarguably one of the best literary figures still living today and certainly one whose writing has shaped my worldview more than most. That reminds me though, earlier this year I worked at a sort of antique store in NYC where the owner had once met Donna when she was making a purchase there. And after I heard that I spent every shift in a masked state of terrible anticipation for the day she might quietly slip through the shop door. She never made an appearance while I was there, though I still dream about the possibility of another chance encounter in the future.
lol i cant blame you i would have done the same...
i love the painted cover mariners book classics editions of virginia woolfs books if you’re looking for ones with beautiful covers. i’d also highly recommend the vintage classics editions of edith wharton and dostoevsky novels, as they have really good covers.
the painted covers are gorgeous!! i will look into the other editions...
I have read Inferno for my literature class in high school and I remember liking it a lot. I read the original version though because I happen to be Italian but yeah I’ve enjoyed it a lot.
shut up you showoff!! im excited to read tho...
I read atonement and the start was so slow but once you get past that I really enjoyed it! The story is so well thought of too and so thought provoking. I also recommend watching the movie with Keira knightly and James Mcavoy it was stunning!
oooo wanting to watch the movie might motivate me to read it sooner...
Just knew at least something good was gonna happen in today's not so good day when u posted ✨ also hope u r doing good , love ur videos < 3

This was unhinged, Charles. I loved every second of it.
Also, I love I Capture The Castle!!
im glad you had fun ;) Castle is so good i cant stop thinking about it
I think tarot is super interesting from a storytelling and numerology standpoint and honestly if I had the money I would collect decks just for the artwork because there are so many beautiful ones 😭💕 also OMG I read 101 Dalmatians in middle school and the disney film is one of my all time favs, I'd die to own a copy of the book and a copy of the sequel: Starlight Barking!
tarot sounds like so much fun and the decks really are beautiful.. i really want to read 101 but i cant bring myself to buy the ugly modern version 😭
Great haul - that first edition of The Secret History! WOW! I have just gone on eBay and treated myself to an early 60th birthday present of The Folio Society edition you have of I Capture the Castle 🎂🕌
Have you ever read Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day? So poignant, so quietly sad.
happy early birthday!!! 🥳🫶 that edition of Castle makes such a lovely gift (esp to yourself hahah). i havent read any Ishiguro! 🫣 I will pick up the remains of the day next time i see it at the thrift. (ps i thought of you, my scotland fan, when i was talking about the scotland book! 😏😛)
@@cs0p Your Scotland fan - I love this 🏴
Omg I absolutely LOVED The Dutch House but despised Commonwealth. I then picked up her essay collection(newest one) and also didn’t like that. I then read Bel Canto and didn’t care for that one either so I didn’t bother with her newest. The Dutch House was extremely special in every way, tho.
i kinda enjoyed the essay collection, but its nothing to write home about. ill probably read tom lake and update you...
Really enjoyed your family friendly video. The Poisonwood Bible . . . Great story.
HAHHA GOOD. i think i could really love it which is partially why ive put it off for so long

A zillion years ago I was hot for T. Tryon's Harvest Home and Lady, not so much for The Other. Wonder how they'd hold up if I re-read them. Luv your cool HH copy! Ishiguro is a fave, I can't stop thinking about his latest, Klara and the Sun, hope you enjoy Never Let Me Go, it's quite popular, and also thought-provoking. I'm gonna try your Castle recommendation, I hadn't heard of it before.
eek! i hope you enjoy Castle.. tell me if you hate it tho. also if you reread any tryon, i need to hear how they hold up
i knew EXACTLY what special edition it would be lmao
i would expect nothing less from a superfan.
I read Inferno a few months ago, it was really good. It took a lot of brain power because it was written in the 14th century, or something. Overall really recommend, especially since you’re a Dan Brown fan. Dante walked so Dan Brown can run lol.
HAHAH ive been saving it for when i have an excess of brain power
I must say I almost never read books, but I love watching these videos.

HAHA good.
Mr. Charles- This video warmed my heart!!!!! I MUST begin my own collection of Edward Gorey- I love him!!! My aunt gave me the exact same copy of Harvest Home which you own- the cover had pretty much disintegrated, but I LOVE that book- I think you will enjoy it, too!?! I have only read My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier, and LOVED it!!! I can't wait to dive into Jamaica Inn and Rebecca!!! I thoroughly enjoy David Sedaris, and you should absolutely give him a try!!! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for this- it put a huge smile to my face!!!!! 😀 You have a marvelous week and until next time, terrific Mr. Charles!!!!! 🎉❤

I just did a brief study on Ayn Rand for Fall Break, and I would recommend The Virtue of Selfishness or her novel The Fountainhead if you don't end up jibing with Capitalism. Namaste.
baby i love the fountainhead....
Oh wow I have a first edition (but not printing) of the secret history I bought at a thrift store for 1.99. I was about to leave it too because I thought the softcover was prettier! My most expensive “treat yourself” book was folio’s Lolita.. ahem.. 300… but it’s an “investment” I too will NEVER EVER sell😂
HAHA lolita for 300...your secrets safe with me...im jealous of finding even a non first printing at the thrift... i like the clear dust jacket!! but the softcover is hot

we love to shop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i still think about that like $20,000 ish necklace you put on one of your newsletters and chuckle
Oh god atonement fucked me up real bad… the writing is really good but I feel that the ending was not clear enough and required some rereading to fully grasp the gravity of his words, but that may be my problem because I stayed up late to read it and my brain was probably not in its optimal functionality. So exited to hear your thoughts about it!
im worried itll crush me too...it sounds like a very sad book
Rebecca is my favorite book!!! So I read Jamaica Inn, Frenchman's Creek, and am now on My Cousin Rachel. My Cousin Rachel is so far the only one that is living up to my high high expectations for Daphne it's SOOOOO good from the first chapter. The other two I mentioned are still good but I recommend reading MCR next.
And the Alfred Hitchcock Rebeccca movie is amazing!! Yes it changes that important plot point but it is not nearly as disloyal to the spirit of the book as I expected it to be. The new one on the other hand doesn't carry the themes of the novel at all and as someone who is rarely an adaptation snob, I hated it.
ok ok modern movie is scratched from the hit list. i will pick up MCR as my next du maurier. Ive also been eyeing her short story collection Dont Look Now...
