2023 taught me that other people's book suggestions, on the whole, are crap. I read alot of books that were suggested to me as being "good" and some that won awards, leaving me with alot of questions regarding what constitutes a "good" book and how books are given awards. It's kinda like pizza or Chinese food.....everybody has wildly different preferences and it's entirely subjective. The best books I've read this year were not liked by thousands of readers in 2023 or given an award by some board of people, they are books that have been enjoyed by millions of people over decades and centuries. Classics. That's what I'm reading this year because I'm tired of hating what someone told me was a "good" book. I'm glad Josh went through that traumatic experience so that Charles could learn a lesson.
You're so far the only book tuber that I could listen all the way through. You're so entertaining and the facial expressions are hilarous :D I had a poor reading year, I only read 13 books...
I’d be happy to see content of you just reading the kinds of books you like and hearing your thoughts on those! I found your channel through your favorite books video and love that we have similar taste!
I’m 1min into the video, excited to hear about someone else who also had a lame reading year, while I hold my baby who is fussing and refusing to go to sleep (the reason for my lackluster reading in 2023) and all I can think is: “who TF is JOSH?!”🥴
I hope Josh isn’t too traumatized from getting locked out lmao, reading on the stairs was kinda iconic tho Also you could literally talk about your grocery list and I would be entertained, so I hope you can read more of what you actually want this year
Ughhh that’s why I’m so hesitant with creating a RUclips channel!! I suspected that it must be tough having your fav hobby as your “job” or feeling forced to do it when you don’t want to but I think that’s when we come in and step back a little bit!
As much as I love Booktube and even certain strains of BookTok, I’ve realized that I let wayyy too much of my 2023 reads be determined by what people online were saying was good even if I didn’t have particular interest in the story. I miss the feeling of being let loose in a bookstore and choosing books based on a good feeling from reading the back + the first few pages rather than checking reviews online and building up an insane TBR list of books I feel that I have to read to keep a pulse on the modern litfic space. Here’s to reading more of what I actually enjoy in 2024, starting with a new (to me) Agatha Christie mystery!
hi!! I think you're content would be just as successful if you read what you liked and recommended it to us! I actually followed you cause I liked you taste in books!
Without realizing I was doing it, I think I read more shorter books with an eye towards content than I would like. So this year I’m trying for longer books (which I like) and making less content. You can have a better year.
I hated all the books I read in 2023. I’m also changing the structure of how I read on my channel because who decided on monthly “due dates”? Classics actually seemed to help reset throughout the year. In this with you 🖤
yea i really dip in and out of reading.. just ride it out and dont beat yourself up, watch some shtty tv show. i hope your 2024 is off to a not terrible start
So honored that the question was mentioned. I ended up reading de profundis because of your recommendation, and it was my best read of the year. I also discovered Elena Ferrante through you. So thank you for the great recs
I am fully committed to reading the books I actually own this year vs obsessively buying books everytime I see something shiny and exciting. I feel personally victimized by my pile of unread books.
Also seriously every time I think, oh I need a video of yours to get through the day, you post one! How will I work through your older ones! Ofc I will go to the newly posted instead 😂 In a way it's also good, that way I won't run out of videos fast, although I have already rewatched a few 😅
I know that it's easier to say as a fan than for you to do as the person creating videos, but what I love about watching your stuff is what you are just a real person giving us a glimpse of what youre reading and your opinion and your personality. Not because the topics are popular. Its genuinely great to hear and learn about different books or topics that arent the same ones i hear about in other booktube channels. I hope that you get to lean on putting your own reading pleasure and journey first in the future! If you just go about your way reading what you normally would even if you weren't making vids and just giving us a glimpse of that journey- that sounds awesome to me!
well I had a pretty good book year thanks to you Charles!!! Reading The Shards right now and DEVOURING IT!! also tried out Eileen and loved it, though the ending was odd imo. Also bought Possession because of one of your commenters
Oh, ok, "Charles" 🤔💕 I'm also going to try not to buy any books this year, especially new ones. That said, I have two book store gift cards! So those will have to be used on something truly worthy.
while the previous year wasn’t that bad for me, reading wise - i can definitely see where you’re coming from. personally, it somewhat tumultuous, with my disillusionment for school kicking in. however, i am very hopeful, that this one will be much better. since your reading year was so bad, i think it’s finally come time to heal yourself through reading the goldfinch, and filming an hour length video essay/review (take this as a sign) in preparation for donna tartt’s new novel hopefully coming this year.
Definitely agree on the reading a book in a day thing! for another reason to add being that I am too willing to mess up my sleep schedule…. God the amount of desperation this past year I experienced to finish a book in a day because I had to know what happened next -_- only to be shocked that I stayed up until 4 am. I just hate myself I guess???
Consider moving to an environment where “calling a locksmith” is something people do, or find someone who lives nearby, is home a lot, and with whom you can leave a spare set of keys.
You and I read wildly different genres (for the most part), so even though I love hearing about your opinions on the books, I'm not really coming here for recommendations. I'm clicking because you're my parasocial reading buddy and you make me giggle. Long way of saying, read what you want! I'll be watching either way, but you'll be happier. ☺️😉
is the burts bees chapstick so perfectly placed on your bookshelf an easter egg for a future video based on u reading books with chapstick flavors in the title or did i just give u the most genius idea ever?
This was entertaining. (Your account of locking yourrself out proves that domestic trivia CAN be amusing - the trick is in the telling, at which you excel.) Do your friends read? Do you manage to have interesting bookish discussions?
I forgot my key once when I lived with my parents. I had the key in another jacket that I changed the same morning.and forgot about it. I had to crawl through the smallest window of the house that was open. One of those that you can just open up the half way. I am amazed that I didn't get stuck and got through it.. Your story was fun though. My reading year sucked too. I read 103 books but I liked maybe just 30 or 40 of them. Happy new year.
I wish for you to get back the joy of reading. We’re here for your personality first of all. Here’s some unsolicited advice on how to bring back the magic. You’re an interesting person who can try out different formats and be very good (like recent cooking video), so try to take it easy and do whatever you like, basically. Nothing revolutionary here, obviously, but I never said I was a genius, just a subscriber. Good luck to you and lots of inspiration! You’re a great creator, so you’ll figure it out in due time

I get so many recommendations on youtube for book videos with people in asthetic nooks with rustic shelves and stars in the video titles, so this one caught me off guard and made me laugh lol. Also I wanna say, you sound like you could benefit from caring less about the videos you make informing what you read. People just want to watch people be genuinely passionate about sharing what they like or don't like. It doesn't have to be a book that anyone else in the world cares about for you to make great videos about it. All that matters is that you care, and that we can tell you care!
Hilarious story, i can relate somewhat, never been locked out of my house but i remember one time standing for 15 minutes in front of my door, feeling stuck because i couldn’t find my keys, and having to keep shifting things in my one hand to the other one so i could check again all the pockets… Took me a while to realize the thing i kept shifting from one hand to the other were actually the keys, lol

Reading books that you don’t like is the worst it’s like wasting brain energy 😭 that’s how I felt reading American psycho (I’m sorry don’t come for me)
Here I am with another comment.. Please read Crime and punishment (eventually) I was obsessed with that book and I would love for us to have as many books we love in common as possible (Also love Anna Karenina & everything from Elena Ferrante!)
I watch you because you’re funny, amazing at articulating your likes and dislikes, and you make niche recommendations. I think you should read more of what you like. You won’t lose us. Howeverrrrrr, if you were considering doing a video on the books and films which inspired saltburn…then I think that would be a good look for you.
do you keep track of your reading? and how do you do it? me myself have a slightly intense love affair with excel sheets lmao also i felt the same way about rules of attraction
@@cs0p Me too! But so far so good, sure I bought some thrifted books, buut they don't count right? 😅🤣 It was my very last purchase atleast for a few months (myb)
You may have had a crummy reading year, Charles, but your fans had a wonderful time listening and watching you prattle on about your chapstick, soup, pecan sap, chewed-up nails, whores, and your reading choices. You def brighten our days! (Less salt for your older fans, please.)
The weirdest book I read last year was Bliss Montage. It’s a collection of the strangest short stories like how to have sex with a yeti and the last one in the book was about a pregnant woman and the baby’s arm was dangling out of her so she went to the dr and he was like “yeah it’s fine, just don’t sit on it”.
you're never gonna get a girl. review some movie books SOMETHING TO DO WITH DEATH - SERIGO LEONE IF THEY MOVE, KILL EM - SAM PECKINPAH Books on Orson Welles

Here I am with another comment..
Please read Crime and punishment (eventually)
I was obsessed with that book and I would love for us to have as many books we love in common as possible
(Also love Anna Karenina & everything from Elena Ferrante!)
i need to read dostoevsky this year!
If you loved Anna Karenina, do you intend to read War and Peace? (big commitment ikik)
ill eat it up one day...this year if i stay atop my game but no promises..
I have about 100 books to be read and still I keep getting more. Thinking doesn’t come into it
me too 💀
I watch you because you’re funny, amazing at articulating your likes and dislikes, and you make niche recommendations. I think you should read more of what you like. You won’t lose us.
Howeverrrrrr, if you were considering doing a video on the books and films which inspired saltburn…then I think that would be a good look for you.
no keep your eyes peeled and i just might bc you asked ;) also thank you...
do you keep track of your reading? and how do you do it? me myself have a slightly intense love affair with excel sheets lmao
also i felt the same way about rules of attraction
i loove a sexy excel sheet. im trying to keep a journal but there's no way that'll stick. i just write notes in my phone usually

@@cs0pu will begin to cough in 7 days
You may have had a crummy reading year, Charles, but your fans had a wonderful time listening and watching you prattle on about your chapstick, soup, pecan sap, chewed-up nails, whores, and your reading choices. You def brighten our days! (Less salt for your older fans, please.)
shut up this is so so sweet 😭
The weirdest book I read last year was Bliss Montage. It’s a collection of the strangest short stories like how to have sex with a yeti and the last one in the book was about a pregnant woman and the baby’s arm was dangling out of her so she went to the dr and he was like “yeah it’s fine, just don’t sit on it”.
sounds like one hell of a wild ride, anyway added it to my tbr on Goodreads 😆
ive wanted to read ling ma for years!! i need to pick up bliss..
Who's this Josh guy that's locking himself out of apartments? Charles must be relieved that this doesn't happen to him!
