This song was played at Gary's short funeral bless his socks just absolutely adore him may he rest peacefully for now soon as i arrive i'm pulling him as he used to say in Auf Weidersehen Pet
I never really had idols as a kid in the 80s but Gary was the one who's death effected me the most. He left us with a shining talent that didn't go on to be fulfilled at it's most - he was just getting started. He was a true star. I miss him still. 33 years ago today. Gone but never EVER forgotten. You were a shining star Gary. R.I.E.P you legend.
Here in Norway Gary Holton rose to fame due to his music partnership with Norwegian Casino Steel. They hit #1 in Norway in 1981 with "Ruby" and now a double-CD has been released in Norway with all their songs + a DVD with on stage performances and interviews, named "Holton/Steel Anthology". Hugely recommended!
I never met Gary, but i had a relationship with his nephew.. I loved the bones of that huy, but unfortunately, he has issues with alcohol and died in 2019,aged only 30. Miss him terribly. X
Saw the Heavy metal kids at Stafford ,England were excellent live in the mid 70s then hichhiked all through France listening to them on an old cassette player.
@mickyboyblue I remember his death on the news , at that time i would have been 10 years old i used to love Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. both a superb actor and singer such a massive loss i have read he also wrote music for a few other groups as well .
I loved this song and more importantly I loved Gary Holton ! just watched Auf Wiedersehen Pet, episode Cowboys, saw a young Gina McKee my favorite geordie actress. Back to Gary, I never knew he was a singer till now, and must get one of his albums as he`s fantastic ! would like to know which part in Quadrophenia he played? as he was not credited...We have not forgotten you Gary. R.I.P
Yes he was :) He was part of Gary Holton and Casino Steel and also in a band called the Heavy Metal Kids :) And he's in the bit where Spider gets beaten up by the rockers....
Thankyou for your reply and I shall be looking out for Spider :)...btw not afraid of spiders :) one place I used to work even the lads asked me if I could get rid of these spiders (they were scared you see ) lol..I really dont think Gary got the fame he deserved, yes in acting, but miss him so, and dont think I`m the only one, oh and that fantastic cockney accent, love it, but I also loved another and that was Steve Marriott..both died far too young....
@19Sadler Awesome! And Yea, He died before I was Born :( Would have really loved to have met him, everyone takes the mick out of me just because I like a dead guy :'(
Mmm I have seen that Jimmy Lea, ex Slade played bass and keyboard, also produced, but it definately as the Brian May sound on the guitar, did he play on it.
Sounds very like slade !!! Then you find out jimmy lea arranged produced this and played all the instruments Obviously noddy couldn’t get out that day to sing it And he forget to tell don and Dave about the booked studio time !!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
He also got a load of stick from the News Of The World when a girlfriend died of a heroin overdose in 1978. Was lucky enough to see him live in 1978 but news of the incident meant there were a few in the crowd showing some animosity towards him. A shame as he deserved better.
In 1984 Jim Lea of Slade produced an album for singer / actor Gary Holton. Lea also played all the instruments (except drums, played by Geoff Seopardi) on two singles from the album; Holton's cover version of "Catch a Falling Star" and "That's How the Story Goes". Neither achieved any success
I’ve never heard a bad word said about Gary, despite his troubles. As a geordie, I’ll always remember him fondly.
I bet in his darkest hours he never thought that this many people would still love and remember him 36 years later.
Met him in Norway during the 80´s. He used to send me postcards from the places he visited that time. Never to be forgotten.
@starryian007 are you flirting Ian?
