I find the best way to seal the end of the silicone tube for storage is to leave a blob of silicone protruding and then wrap some masking tape around the nozzle and pinch it at the top to seal it off. You can then normally just pull the set blob out for next use. If it's too far cured down the nozzle, remove the nozzle, check silicone is still good at the tube end and just use a new nozzle.
I've never done it before but alcohol wipes are used pretty much everywhere when preparing a surface that needs something bonding to it. It cleans and dries extremely quickly so that may be something to do after using a damp sponge. Great vid as usual :D
Looks like a very neat job that. I’ve used a similar tool called a fugi profiling tool and it comes with a small attachable rail to glide over the grout joints if you don’t want to get that small ripple in the silicone. Can be useful so just wanted to put it out there.
Ha beat me to it :) www.plumbworld.co.uk/fugi-applicator-kit-5-piece-1847-16740?GoogleBase&GB&GoogleBase&gclid=Cj0KCQjwn4ncBRCaARIsAFD5-gWN-NWHNB-oA1N1B25i7gLUMMnqYAh_jAM4HNkfbPFnq_j0EDcD4iMaArgcEALw_wcB
Use a little spray bottle with a weak washing up liquid mix. Soak the tool and and the bead. The silicone just falls off the tool and you don't have half the mess, I also sometimes use a bucket and just use the top edge of the bucket to scrape off the tool, find it quicker and less messy than the paper but like u say everyone has they're own way. Love your videos!!!
Looks good. One thing I always do is spray the silicone bead with soapy water before smoothing with the applicator. It makes things much easier as the silicone will not stick to the soapy water. This keeps the applicator and any tiles or other surface clean during the process. I used to really struggle until I learned this technique, now my seals are perfect. Don't bother with masking tape as some people suggest.
Another great video. It's a shame that school isn't as fun a learning from you. I wish that plumbing was a subject at school years ago and I chose to learn it. I would have been a very happy man at work right now, for sure. Keep up the good work!
I like these videos and your enthusiasm to our plumbing trade. I'm watching from Seattle, I hope this channel does well with plumbers from other countries checking it out.
I've managed to watch the pros at work doing this job. Builder that uses me gets in a professional mastic man and he didn't mind me watching. He used different shaped pieces of bolser wood and sprayed the wall with some sort of soapy water after he applied the silicon (really thick) he had cut the nozel off more than I ever would but the finishing was perfect!!! He used them by pushing the silicone from both sides till together in a gyoolpy mess that didn't stick the the water mixture. I heard the big secret is to soak the wooded formers in the solution for 24hr before trying to use.
Another smooth professional vid Mr J! You’re getting good at this. I use methylated spirit & paper towel to clean the joint area as it decreases the are so the silicone will really stick!
Hello James.Thank you for the video. This was helpful. I am glad you were using the 10mm seal because I am nervous if using the 6mm on the sealing tool. I am attempting to reseal a bath this weekend. It was installed years ago on a cradle and there is an overhead shower at one end so I need to get the seal right. I have some questions: 1) Do I need to fill the bath with water to account for load bearing on the final seal? 2) Please tell me why you use 8mm cut off on the nozzle even though you take the excess off. I appreciate there must be a reason but I thought I would try with a smaller cut and then not have to waste so much in the removal. Is it so it fills in the gap deeply? 3) Do you recommend Dow Corning over Mapei Solvent Free Silicon? I have seen mixed reveiws for many sealants on Screwfix. 4) As you mentioned using Hippo as a first seal before the silicone, does that mean I could use the Dow Corning/Mapei sealant to make a flat seal before making a 45 degree seal? Thank you very much in advance. Kate.
To store the tube of silicone, I usually clean the tip like you did, but then give a little squeeze so a little pops out the top, letting that dry then provides a seal for the tube, then when you come to use it again, it just a case of twisting off the nubbin
Hi, can you tell me if after the silicone has dried, and you use the shower, will the weight of you standing there weaken the seal and cause a problem. I once read that you should put some kind of weight on the tray straight after, so it dries in the lowest position. Great videos, keep them coming. Cheers.
Lovely job Jimmy! Fugi tools for me and a spray gun of weak washing up liquid solution to spray the bead and finger with after using the Fugi tool. Gently running a soapy wet finger over the bead can smooth out those grout ripples. I also tend to use Big Wipes to prepare the area before applying silicon. Finally after I've finished I gently squeeze the trigger to allow a small amount to protrude from the nozzle and then store the tube nozzle down in the van. Next time I go to use it I pull on the cured piece and I'm ready to go! Have a good weekend.
What's hippo/hi-po? Some sort of adhesive or sealant? When I finish with a tube of silicone I tape clingfilm around the end. Next time I go to it, I unscrew the nozzle and push the solidified plug out with a screwdriver. As a DIYer, it's usually ages between uses, and it starts to cure from the tip back. If I'm unlucky the whole thing has gone solid!
Try using Fugenboy silicone sealant applicators. They come with "ski's" that you attach to the applicator that it allows it to "ski" over tile joints, thus not getting any ripple in the silicone as you apply past tile joints. Job done.
Nice one James... Someone said use baby wipes for clean up , yep work lovely. But if your past or not started the baby stage, I found the wife's makeup removal wipes do a great job too!
Great video mate. I hadn't silicone. You made it look easy. I tend to use my finger and over work it. Definitely going to get some of them formers. Ignor the knob heads mate. They haven't got anything else to do but criticise. 👍👍
Good video PP, depending on the tile you can run the tools at a slight angle to lead them over the grout joints so they don't drop in and use the smaller tools one to clear any excess from the grout joint.
How to silicone like a plumber: *Ensure fingers are covered in flux *Use a down pipe for a nozzle *pull trigger hard and use uneven pressure whilst pulling and pushing the gun backwards and forwards intermittently. *finish by smearing with dirty sausage fingers, insuring to wipe excess on to finished walls. *Lean something against wall to cover imperfections. *Say a little prayer before leaving it for the next man to worry about. I can see you are using an unusual working process, must be because it's your own gaff ;)
That there damp sponge 🧽 is the perfect candidate for wiping your excess silicone off of your smoothing tool onto said sponge; that’s what works for me 👍🏼😉
I will be buying a bedex kit for sure I’m a basic diyer and your videos help a lot and gives confidence, plus ur a funny guy . Keep vids coming and we hold tight !
If you buy the Fugi kit it comes with a guide piece so when you smooth the silicone with the tool and you meet a grout line, it doesn't give you a dip in your nice straight silicone joint

+1 on the proper gun, more to the point is the cheap ones keep applying pressure so you get a mess everywhere unless you release the pressure, the decent ones aren't applying pressure once you take your hands off the tool.
Hey bud great vids pal, quick question is there any reason why the tray couldn’t be fitted on top of the tiles so to hide the cut edge of the curve? Cheers Simon
if possible clean the about-to-be-siliconed surfaces with IPA - isopropyl alcohol, it cleans and degreases the surfaces and also evaporates quickly leaving no residues behind.

Thanks James just it time, putting in my own on suite this week will be doing the silicone soon. Will try the Bedex, I have found on eBay 100 ends for sealant with screw on caps saves the old sludge for another day.
Nice job! Can never understand cutting the tip on an angle though? I always cut-off square butmy mate always cuts angled. Drives me mad. Cut it off square, then as you apply it left to right you don't have to rotate the tube to avoid the pointy angle digging in. Maybe I'm wrong, but I never am :-)

Great vid again, I use these sort of tools, Fugi I think is the ones I use , anyway do you think trying to silicone a 90degree corner horrible? Like your shower tray or a bath! I mean when you do one side it’s perfect but then doing the opposite side and pulling out of the corner always makes a mess of your perfect 👌 first bead of silicone and you got to keep going over the corner and adding more silicone? I usually do one pull out first and let it cure then do the other opposite side so it doesn’t make a mess of my nice new bead 😂 Just a thought

Tip for you- when blue roll (yes I even bought that especially) isn’t quite cutting it, BABY WIPES. Nothing takes everything off anything like a baby wipe. Do we really use these on babies backsides?
Thanks for the vid - what silicone do you recommend, I've used Dow Corning 785 but find there's bits of mould/mildew after 3 years and picking it out of glass mosaic tiles is a pain. I have four showers to do so want to get it right.
Looks like a good job, if time allows let wet silicone cure in corners before doing the next side but as we know not always possible. Have found profilers in Aldi for £3 just as good

Good video as always! What if you need to mix different coloured silicone?? Such as white round tray, coloured match to tiles in corners and clear round enclosure. As wet silicone doesn’t stick/seal to dry silicone, how do you do it all at once and get beat joins with no smudging?
I stopped using silicone over a year ago. I will only use CT1 or similar product. Decent gun, controlled bead, wipe in with finger and smooth and clean with wonder wipes. I work for a 50 strong firm and everyone comments on my sealing up.

I get you but not if your re going over like he does say from 12mm to 10mm you would get water contamination. Then it will start to go funny.
Water gets behind the silicone if there's any small gaps. Spraying is not a good idea

If you have old cracks in your slicone . Do you remove the old slicone before applying a new coat or do you apply it on top of the old coat.
Tryna do plumbing level 2 for my college course, tryna get an apprenticeship at the moment. Glad I found your channel
You know I think you have really efficient, practical and logical working practises!
could you keep the extra silican in a plastic bottle for later use.like plumbers potty
+1 on the proper gun, more to the point is the cheap ones keep applying pressure so you get a mess everywhere unless you release the pressure, the decent ones aren't applying pressure once you take your hands off the tool.

Thanks 🙏
Thanks for all the good info.

Where's the best place to get a decent silicon gun?
Where did you get yours from?
Thank you for the great video. Question, do you need a dedicated cold and hot water feed for the processor unit?
not a bad job . I used to do a lot of silicone and like you say the is lots of ways . Dobie Pads! Make sure to remove the sponge from the plastic netting.
Nib wise when finished, I squeeze about a half inch of silicone & leave it built up on the end; then when ready to go again; squeeze your trigger & pull the end off into a bit of paper towel / loo roll 👍🏼😉
Is there a way to save the silicone or use less off as a lot of it is wasted when smoothing out?
Do lots use the 385 silicone or is CT1 the go to please?
A few comments about saving silicone but why spend thousands on a new bathroom only to try and save a few pence on sealer?
Hi James, please would you help me with my questions as I need to do this bath seal. Thanks.
brilliant vid, any tips on how to silicone behind taps with the formers? managed but what a faf, cheers

Hi, if you use a bit of clean window cleaner spray on the tool and also on the silicone may you will find more easy....works for me...✌️
TOP TIP: "BIG WIPES CLEANING SPRAY" is great for getting silicone off stuff. Smells a bit funky though.
Looks like a good job, if time allows let wet silicone cure in corners before doing the next side but as we know not always possible.
Have found profilers in Aldi for £3 just as good
How do you silicone on a bath behind a bath filler ? i can't even get my fingers tips reaching there
White spirit and a finger works for me every time but i apply a farr lighter bead and have had a lot of practice.
I find using silicone tools it takes longer. Uses more silicone and is a pain with small format tiles and behind taps.
Eithier way you made a really tidy job so fair play.

Wet silicone will stick like sh*t to cured clean and dry silicone. No matter the colour or modulus
Excellent job I will attempt this myself too after watching
What is hippo seal that you talked about?
I like the idea of folding over the blue roll. I usually end up with more silicone on me than the actual sink/bath. HA HA. Hold tight.
That’s pretty much how i do it. Always perfect lines using those little rubbers.
What a top bloke.
I try and make sure I have wet wipes on hand whenever using sealants or adhesives in a finished (almost) room
I buy extra nozzles bit of a waste but saves having a hard bit of silicon spoiling it
whats the name of the manf for the seal tool pls?
Great video, I’ll be using the folding paper advice. Thanks 🙏
Make sure the area is clean!
Wipes silicone scraper on hairy hobbit shin :)
good job pal, I recommend water bomb balloons for the end of the silicone gun to stop it from curing in the nozzle easy to put on and take off
I stopped using silicone over a year ago.
I will only use CT1 or similar product.
Decent gun, controlled bead, wipe in with finger and smooth and clean with wonder wipes.
I work for a 50 strong firm and everyone comments on my sealing up.
Rough.
Ct1 goes yellow over time
Finally someone who knows his trade. Try a little spay bottle with RO water an a little detergent in.
That's just showing folk how not to do it
Finaly the right way to silicone !!
Big Tubs up !!
