There were two things I found scary about the movie: 1. The lady from the painting 2. Bev's father Pennywise, while quite creepy, was also funny a lot of times.
maddams Same in the book (well, the lady isn’t in the book). King ends up saying that real monsters are all human. Henry Bowers (there’s a deleted scene of this film where he kills the other bullies), Bev’s father and [POSSIBLE SPOILER FOR CHAPTER 2] Bev’s husband are really scary, even more than Pennywise at times
I think they shifted Ben into the "town researcher" role to flesh out his character more in the build up to Ben+Bev. Its also a way to get the background on Derry into the first film. Mike does not discover the truth about Derry until he is an adult.
Wrong. In the book Mike brings his father's photograph album to the Barrens to show his new friends that It shows up in many of the antique pictures, proving that It has been part of Derry for a long time. He showed interest in the subject of Derry's history from a young age.
It’s not, though. It completely ripped apart most elements from the book. There are aspects that are true to the book (the Leper), and there are others that completely destroy the characters (Mikes parents being burned up crackheads instead of good parent farmers).
Bill Skarsgård really nailed the role as Pennywise the Clown i don't think the haters understand that his version was sinister and monstrous portrayal of the character he brought something new to the table. At least he didn't try to be like Tim Curry which was also very good Pennywise.
Well, the point is... he wasn't scary. Like at all. Fast forward the movements will make it look silly, not creepy or sinister. And that's what it was. A silly, over the top clown.

So, I discussed that scene with my girlfriend. We both had different views on it. I thought the flaming clouds behind him were literally a portal of hell, with him dancing in front of it. I thought it was mention to confuse and frighten his victim. She thought it was something way different. Now, since the girl isn't afraid of him, he's at a loss. So the bizarre dance was his last effort. He is frustrated and simply grasping at straws to frighten the girl.
Wow, your girlfriend seemed to have a really interesting take on that. I never would have thought to look at it that way. My argument, however is that if that were the case then why keep going for those particular kids? If he simply does this as a way to survive then why not move on after his initial failures to someone easier for him to frighten and kill. As far as him being desperate though I totally agree. I think this is the first time he ever encountered someone who numbed themselves of the fear, and he's frustrated, but takes it as sort of a challenge
Commandant 4D44 he continually goes after them because they keep escaping or beating him. He gets angry and obsessed with those particular kids. It's why as adults he still targets them; he wants revenge and it turns into a vendetta. They made him feel scared for the first time

As someone who’s read the book and grew up with the old version, I really liked this movie. One of my issues is Mike though. First he doesn’t have parents or good guardians, when Mike was the only one who had good, dedicated parents in the book. And then he was made so boring and given such a small part. I don’t think racism (or sexual assault etc) should be thrown around lightly, but I just don’t understand why someone so important was minimized. I wanted to see a happy Hanlon family, being proud and strong in the face of a racist culture. But they turned that into another scary tragedy, when there are PLENTY of those in the source material.
Heard joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. But they turned that into another scary tragedy, when there are PLENTY of those in the source material.

everybody forgets that Carrie was the one that got a remake first.
Nope, The Shining was remade first. Stephen King did not like Kubrick's adaptation and did it himself, but it wasn't very good.
The Carrie remake was silly.
Can we pls not talk about that remake?

Perfect reference to that joke.
Heard joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor...I am Pagliacci.
Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.
