NI Battery Day 2023 - Jeff Dahn

On 6 July, 2023, the Nickel Institute held its inaugural Battery Day, an outstanding success. The goal of the event was to put the focus on advances in nickel-containing battery technologies, take a look at some emerging applications and examine the role of recycling.
Dr. Jeff Dahn, Principal Investigator NSERC/Tesla Canada Alliance Grant at Dalhousie University gave a keynote presentation.

I'm a physicist. I have been trying to understand the large loss of range of EVs when it's cold. I just look at it from a simple circuit point of view. The charged battery has a large number of ions available and they don't leak off much when it's cold. The time integral of the circuit current should then be at least as large as when it's warm. What is left in my simple loaded circuit view, is that the available voltage when UNDER the LOAD of the motor must be much lower. And it must be down at least 30% in order to explain a 30% reduction in range of the same percentage when the temperature is, say -10 C. I tried to find reasons for this and I agree that increase of the viscosity of the electrolyte may be.part of it. But I don't think that can be the only element involved.
So, could you point to other reasons for the large percent reduction?
