  • This episode sees the completion of the main floor steel as well as framing the front porch to create material storage on a tight job site. The video was made from one week of footage shot Monday through Friday. The crane was the last part of the day on Friday thanks to a cancellation and it came a couple hours sooner than I was expecting it, so I wasn’t able to plan shots or even move the camera around much to capture it. Hopefully the time lapse will tell enough of a story.

    I'm not sure what's more amazing: the fact that you cut 26mil plate effortlessly with a circular saw, or your work ethic.
    It's your work ethic. Holy moly.

    • @ShredPile
      @ShredPile  4 месяца назад +2

      Yeah those saws are a total game changer. You can buy those blades to fit any Skil saw but it’s the speed that the blade turns that’s crucial and for the metal cutting one it’s much slower.

      @@ShredPile The other big thing is that those specialist saws are designed to contain all the chips, which is awesome if you are working inside.... They're not that expensive either, about $450, at least for the Makita one.

Somebody else may have already said this and I realize I’m watching these videos weeks behind but it might save time and effort to rig the steel using a chainfall or come along from the forks. Man, I'm fascinated by construction work like this. Unfortunately, I know as much about building, as a scruffy nerfhearder knows about being a princess! I have so many questions though... and I guess it couldn't hurt to ask. So here's a few questions :
    - I see wood getting wet and my inexperienced mind goes "welp, there goes that piece!". Obviously that's not the case, but how long can wood stay out in the rain before things go south?
    - How are you doing this all on your own? Wouldn't you go twice as fast with Pedro, or the neighbors grandson lending a helping hand? (eh, this question is more jealousy, as I'd like to be there nailing and learning, I suppose).
    - Did I miss the vid where the concrete got poured, or did you come in to this job after that was done?
    - Are the beams pre-drilled?
    I've got a million more, but ill leave it there.
    Keep up the kick ass work!

    • @ShredPile
      @ShredPile  4 месяца назад +4

      Hey man, thanks for watching, I'll try my best here to answer some questions for you.
      -Wood does get wet in this part of the country. I do not use OSB products other than the floor joists for that reason, The upgraded 1-1/8" plywood floor is used specifically because of the open time of the house during construction. The rest of the wood not including the PT is kiln dried or steam dried so the weather really doesn't affect it.
      - I work solo 95% of the time so I'm extremely accustomed to dragging all my crap around to where I need it when I need it. Could I hire someone? -yes. Do I want to? -no. I have enough equipment and a good enough system in place that the jobs get done in a timely fashion.
      It's tough to explain sometimes to an audience that is used to instagram channels blasting out fast paced highlight reels of pattern work houses going together at warp factor nine just what a detailed and involved build this one really is. The industry pros that are keeping tabs on it know exactly what the score is here so I try to show some of those details so they can suffer along with me :-) (none of that is said in a mean or sour sort of way, I do appreciate your comments) I will also say no where have I ever promoted the fact that I work alone as a hook to draw views, I am really only in my 3rd month of posting stuff here and do not consider myself a youtuber but rather a construction guy just doing his thing that decided to turn the camera on. I really didn't even think that it would be such an apparent oddity. There are a few guys out there that are solo framers that are absolute rockstars at what they do and although I don't follow any of them I have watched and have massive respect for the speed that they work at.
      -I did not do this foundation. I'm the framing and steel contractor on this project.
      -The beams are not predrilled, that's all me and part of the fabrication process. I think theres' a good segment on how I do that at the start of the second video in this series and there will be more of it shown including some elapsed time to better gauge progress. We've had a pretty sever weather incident over the last few weeks so i'm working steel off-site as power has been out at the job and the roads were iced over going in there.
      Anyway, I hope you stick around to watch the rest as I put it all together.
      -jake

      @@ShredPile Thanks for the thoughtful and detailed reply. Means a lot and made perfect sense. I watch a bunch of YT build channels (Texas Best out of TX, Perkin Bros in NC for ex) and they’re all team builders. I’ve never seen a solo builder before that handled this scale of work, and you’re cutting your own way here on YT.
      My only advice- the pros like you never mind hearing you repeating why you do what you’re doing, but that info is invaluable to folks like me who don’t know their @ss from their elbow... so make believe you’re videoing for a 5 yr old and explain as much as possible.
      I know it’s a bit more tedious, but I’d surely appreciate it and I think it only adds to the already stellar quality you’re obviously known for. Also, recapping where you’re at in the build would be enormous for dumdums like me to get a sense of what’s what (“remember... right here‘s the driveway, and where I’m standing will end up being the porch, and eventually that over there will be...”).
      Either way, thanks again, appreciate you taking the time and I look forward to more. I’m an instant fan!

    • @ShredPile
      @ShredPile  4 месяца назад +3

      Thanks for that, I guess the biggest explanation would be the description in the first video and somewhat more in the following videos descriptions as well. As you can see it's a new build and I am both the framer and the fabricator. I usually end up doing the interior and exterior handrails and any other miscellaneous welding as well. These projects keep me extremely busy and performing two of the main tasks simultaneously leave slim time to shoot and post videos, I'm not sure I have the bandwidth to better explain the build other than thru the description and short explanations as I film the trickier bits. Perhaps I could add in a rendering of the finished build somewhere , I'll explore ways to make that happen.
      I do hope you stay tuned for more as there is some fantastic stuff coming up:-)

    as a builder of custom homes and most of them containing steel, I've never seen an I beam attached with just concrete screws.

    • @ShredPile
      @ShredPile  4 месяца назад +4

      It is interesting and have been somewhat anticipating a comment on It.
      Before I detail it out I will offer this though, Were the beam being anchored be made out of wood dimensional or engineered be used in the same application it would be rare that it would be anchored with anything but nails and no one would think anything of it at all. At most a tin clip or nail plate but that would be it.
      I think it's a pretty easy misconception and one I'm guilty of myself that the use of steel automatically makes something a skyscraper and it's just not true, some of the beams are basically captured in place and are only used to meet deflection requirements so a Titen is more than adequate.
      Also, I will add that not all of them are screwed down and I did not include footage of all of the ones that sat over poured in place bolts(many of them did). As a point of interest for you as a builder I will also add that the 4 bolts in the main pillar connection at the carport travel all they way up through 17'+/- of 16" thick wall from where they are imbedded 18" into a 3' thick footing :-)
      From my standpoint putting weld plates directly into the foundation would cut my time on task by 90%. Using titens is the slowest way possible requiring the greatest degree of precison out of any other option.
      Thanks for the comments and for tuning in I hope you continue to keep tabs on the project.

Thanks for tuning in again.

    I missed some of the earlier videos, so I don't know if you went over it already, how about a floor plan? Without that all of us framers are watching you without any idea of what is to come in the future.
    I like to see a building going up, and the quality work that goes into it, but I do not like to be held in the dark as to why a particular thing is being done. I think most people that would be interested in your videos will be able to grasp the scope of what you are doing, if they can see some plans.

      Haven't shared one yet but will probably put up a rendering of the back of the house somehow. I've been working a little hamstrung by a non-backfilled front on a job with almost zero access up to this point but It was taken care of this week finally. Things should pick up now:-)

    Why install structural steel on top of wood? That makes no sense.

      Sorry man, I thought I replied to this earlier. Thinking back thru the video the only place where there is a beam on wood is the one that was set closest to the camera during the timelapse. That was as far as the crane could reach and I placed it by hand later the next week. All beams are sitting on 1-1/2x6 flat bar shims to match the height of the PT. maybe you saw a spot where it overlapped somewhere....

    It doesn't look like a house to me, more like a fallout shelter.

      @@ShredPile The walls are made of solid concrete, the ceiling beams are so large that a tank could ride on them. I'm not picking on you and don't get me wrong. I will subscribe to the channel and watch the progress.

    you can't make a video without subtitles, you can't understand what you're saying
