Modern House Part 20- Window delivery, more punch list and wrap up of main series in description
So this is the last regular consecutive episode for this series. My work is not completed there but I have been elsewhere wrapping up loose ends, doing small jobs start to finish (some of which I've been filming) and the footage has caught up to me. At this point in the job all of my initial inspections are passed and approved with the other subs starting to take over with all of their rough-in work. I will be back to start working with the window crew and the crane to place the larger units and strategically position others so as finish with the crane and get it moved to the next jobsite. Once the subs are done there will be plenty of pickup work on the structural end of things to do and...

Modern House Part 19- Pick-up work, small change, treads and risers, making the best of a short week
Просмотров 22 тыс.День назад
Closer and closer, with the scaffold up now I can access the final bits of plywood and finish the strong wall connections by installing the correct grade of bolt that I didn't have when I set them. I also install the final treads, risers and landing plywood from the main floor to the upper floor. The stairs are angle front so there is no overhanging lip but instead the toe recess is created by ...
Modern House Part 18- Wall sheeting, window openings and pickup work plus scaffolding

With the roof done it's time to start wrapping up the exterior sheathing and fine tuning all the window holes. There's lots to do but like the rest of the house you just start in and go project to project. It might seem sort of random sometimes but there's usually a reason for it. Sometimes it's easier to cut up a pile of wood and do a short project with it than it is to just move the pile agai...

Here's the rest of the unused footage from the gopro on the crane for part 17 as I top out on the roof. I also tried a different angle that ended up a little shaky but the light was great and overall it was a good perspective. As always, thanks for watching and I'll be back on Thursday with part 18. -Jake
Ingot molds for Tally Ho's internal ballast- Final shapes plus a bonus project.

Here's an easy watch of the fabrication for the two final ingot mold shapes for Tally Ho's internal ballast. As you all now know, Leo and his crew are on an accelerated timeline to get Tally Ho in the water. Not quite sure of how tight a schedule but sensing that it was more than a little urgent I did my best to get these done and into the mail. There were a few comments on the Prototype video ...

Busy episode, went as far with the wall framing as I could until the roof beams, go up and that then allows me to finish my way back down. Managed to get almost all the roof joists cut and placed as well. it’s about 1300 ft.² (120 m² ) up there but it sure felt like it went quick since it was all on somewhat normal framing terms without the steel involved at that level. It's pretty rare but for this one it makes sense with the amount of detail that goes into the exterior skin not to mention the size of the windows. I can't imagine how much trouble it would be to try and use pumpjacks, planks and ladders to work on the cantilevered end of house. at the highest point it's 20' from the ground to the bottom of the structure.

      @@dwttexjw4796 It's homemade:-) just a piece of flat bar bent in a 'U' with one end longer than the other and the long end screwed to the handle. Nothing fancy. It showed up a lot in the first few episodes and again near the middle of the series I guess. It makes short work of a lot of holes especially when you're not trying to drill upside down. If you don't overspeed the bit you can get hundreds of holes from a single good quality bit.

      It was penance for not drilling them on the ground when i had them in the yard.:-) The angle wasn't great and a block of wood to stand on would've made a huge difference too but it really only took a half hour to go all the way down and around the corner so I stuck it out.

    Looks like a Northern (common) Flicker. We have them up here in SE Alaska as well. I get a big kick out of them. They drum up a mate in April here. For the past few years one has decided the best drum is the transformers on the power poles. He can get a big sound out them to get the best ladies! I had one years ago that saw his reflection come daybreak in the windows of my daylight basement. I though he was going to break the glass as he thought it was competition for the gals he was seeing!! Beat the heck out of the glass. He came back several mornings in a row about 4:30 AM. More typical is a 4" edge nailing and the most basic or minimum is 6" edge nailing. All field nailing is 12" but it naturally ends up at around 8-10" One things for sure, it's important to make sure everything is where you want it before you nail off a 2" centers wall:-)

    I like that vise mount on the back of your truck. Very practical.

      Hey thanks, that's the third truck it's been on in roughly the same location. the mount keeps it pretty much dry although I lube it frequently anyway. The best thing about it is I'm not running into it all time because it's out of the way:-)

    Very curious re that Simpson wall thingy … if it’s so “engineered”, does it have an actual torque requirement ? I read all the comments and this in particular doesn’t seem to be addressed. Also, IS there an expensive, bespoke wrench available? love the build and yo style ✌️

    • @ShredPile
      @ShredPile 12 дней назад

      That's an excellent question and no, I have never found a torque spec or a wrench for one and personally I think they avoid it by crafting the panel in such a way that it actually remains a wood bottomed panel and the steel bracketry does not make contact with any other hard surface so it's a 'soft' join as it were and a torque target zone would be too ambiguous. It's more likely that it would noted as turn-of-nut and that's how I treat it. I've assembled larger Simpson branded moment frames before that used torque indicating washers so I know they are thorough about things. In all honesty I would be a good time watching someone even trying to get a torque wrench on it in the first place:-) Thanks for checking out the series!

      ah, I didn’t notice that it’s not metal to metal so no torque makes more sense…although the no easy wrench access is still a head scratcher! thanx for responding…will carry on enjoying your channel ✌️

    Hey Jake are you going to post the window and door install?? The enormity would be unique to witness. Maybe an overall look at the project as it moves along? Even dismantling the crane would be cool to see. Thanks

    • @ShredPile
      @ShredPile 12 дней назад

      Probably will get a bunch of it in there but I'll only be on site to help move them around and crane them into position for the window crew. I for sure will film the moving of the crane as It goes to its' next job (Which is a fun one:-)

    I'm assuming the inspector (if required in your state) will accept photo's showing the finished nailing of the strong wall nail plates, prior to sheeting :) Nice site made spanner by the way. I'm sure the supplier sells a bespoke version, but I hate to think how expensive that one would cost :) Really enjoying this series, I'll probably go back and watch it again from the beginning once it's completed.

      Totally required and Ironically I pinned up photos just today for them showing the install. Sometimes burying things like that is unavoidable and they are usually pretty chill about things if they see you are being thorough everywhere else. I'm really glad this build has been a hit with you, It definitely makes me think a bit more going into my other jobs about how to best document it.

    What do those panels do? Never seen anything like that. Time stamp 36.02

    • @ShredPile
      @ShredPile 12 дней назад

      They are shear wall panels that are strong enough to replace long sections of conventionally built wall which allows for more windows or other openings. I saw your earlier comment about Shoyan, I watch him as well and have drooled over just those flat offset ratchets of his. Unfortunately they would not fit either. Even a conventional box end wrench won't work. If it even fits in the hole the flared neck can't make enough of a sweep to tighten the bolt. It's just the dumbest thing ever.
