@@marywinnifred9242 to be fair, as the ship was operated by the Royal Navy and not privately operated, it was always a ship built for duty from the start.
In the late 40s or early 50s, Royal Family was presented with a much more elaborate concept for its design but turned it down in preference for the much more simplistic design we see today. The ship made 968 state visits over it's service including about 40 commonwealth tours which not only inspired future trade deals but also helped unify the commonwealth.
The reason the ship had so much money spent on its construction and seaworthiness was twofold - First it allowed the ship to visit the more remote parts of the commonwealth (and at the time, the Empire) in the coldest and most harsh regions of the oceans of this amazing world of ours, and, more importantly I'd argue is the second reason - so the ship could be converted into a hospital ship during a time of war (similar to the use of the R.M.S Queen Elizabeth II which was a cunard passenger liner built by the same shipyard and used in the Falklands war for troop transport).
Yes, this capacity as a hospital ship was never used, but the ship did still provide a role as a Royal Navy humanitarian vessel by evacuating just over 1,000 people from war-torn Yemen in 1986, something that no private pleasure-cruiser would ever dream of doing - but this was a Royal Navy ship! There are also numerous other brilliant incidents of this ship being used to deliver humanitarian aid
The Overseas Trade Board estimated that £3 billion was made for the Exchequer as a result of commercial days on Britannia between 1991 and 1995 alone!
I completely understand the point you try to make, and sympathize with the fact that perhaps it was a waste of money - but it certainly wasn't completely useless.
And so, despite having my mind undecided about my view on the monarchy, I definitely think that if done properly - a new Royal Yacht could have potential! But it must be dealt with, like this one was, as a simple and effective hard-working ship with productivity at the heart of the decision-making, something that I don't think bumbling Boris's proposal of a new yacht doesn't have in mind.

Not sure how accurate the Crown is, but they put an importance on the Yacht for QEII... it was the only "home" she got to make her own. Out of all the palaces filled with history and designed by other monarchs, the Yacht was one thing she helped design. She said it felt most like home to her for that reason.

The ship was launched in 1952 and had her maiden voyage in 1953. So, I don't see how you can associate George VI with the yacht at all.

There was a documentary on TV in 97 that said how he'd taken a particular interest in the bow of the ship. I can't remember exactly what or why after all this time, but it surprised me that he was so knowledgeable about whatever the nautical term for aerodynamics is.

I could stand on my back deck and look at her just a few hundred yards up the river. I got in my Kayak one day and paddled right up to it. I was amazed at the way the hull was highly polished all the way to the water line. The other thing that amazed me was that nobody on board seemed bothered that I was able to touch the hull of the Royal yacht and remained unchallenged. It was the second time I had seen the Britania. The first time was when I was much younger in the early 60's My family went to watch the Queen disembark when she was in town.

Some of these comments on here are just down right sad. The Royal Yacht Britannia was a working ship used to conduct official state business and travel for the head of state. It wasn't a "private yacht" to cruise around in, it was a working navy vessel for the millitary and its head. The Royal Yacht Britannia was the equivelant of what Air Force One (again, a millitary plane) is for the President for those of us in the United States. So, yes, its decomissioning was a big deal, even if it needed doing after being in service since before she took the throne. So yes, absolutely, she's allowed to be sad at seeing it be retired after all those years and all the state visits and tours to her people she embarked on with it. It was one of the rare places (save Balmoral) where she could actually be a a human being, a wife, a mother, and a grandmother without 50 million cameras in her face. It was another piece of her privacy and her own humanity being retired with it. May Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II rest in peace and rise in glory. Give Your servant Elizabeth rest with the Saints, O Christ, and eternal memory. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. All you holy Saints of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, pray for her. Difference is US Presidents eventually leave office and become private citizens. They along with other private citizens pay the taxes that fund the upkeep of Air Force One. The Royal Yacht was funded solely by the people of the UK not the royal family that stays in power until they die. To say it's the same as Air Force One is only half true.

The Queen regarded HMY Britannia as her home away from home (and by "home" that's Windsor Castle, Sandringham and Balmoral NOT Buckingham Palace which she disliked). The design and furnishings of the Royal Apartments were based on her wishes, so Britannia was "hers" in a way that her other residences, that she inherited, were not.
However, Britannia was not her personal possession, legally the yacht was just a piece of MOD equipment that was in service at the pleasure of the Government...just as the Air Force One aircraft in the United States are merely USAF equipment and not a part of the White House.
So, she was sad at parting with something she'd spent many happy hours aboard, and taken much effort to suit her convenience. Enemies of monarchy of course would say she shed tears because her fancy toy was being taken away.

And do that every year for it to be decommissioned eventually, anyway?? even if other people paid for it, it would still be decommisioned one day, nothing lives forever. She is not crying because she had to pay for it. She is crying because it all came to an end, the memories and history tied with that ship were gone, for her

But she wasn't in public for Diana's death so she might have cried, she didn't cry for the Queen Mother or Princess Margaret in public but you bet she did in private when she first found out.
She made this ship (well designed) and it was one of the few places where she could be herself, and this was effectively like being at the bedside of your dear friend during the Last Rites and at the Last Moment, with the last breath and flicker of the eyes, of course it was sad, she'd be a monster if she wasn't sad, and the fact that contrary to what you said she did control herself (just) just shows how well trained she is
