  • Explore Kangerlussuaq, Greenland with me in this walk and talk video.
    Kangerlussuaq was founded at the east end of Kangerlussuaq fjord as Bluie West-8 on 7 October 1941, under the supervision of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). Following the fall of Denmark to Germany in World War II, US forces assumed security for Greenland, building several bases including Bluie West-1 to the south in Narsarsuaq and Bluie West-8 at the Kangerlussuaq fjord
    Kangerlussuaq Airport in Greenland used to be a U.S Military Air Base from 1941 to 1992. The airport was handed over to Greenlandic civilian control in 1992.

    I like how each building is painted a different color.

      You will like the other towns that I filmed. The other towns are way better than Kangerlussuaq. The houses there have better colors.

    Again, thanks for this feature. Very helpful for my upcoming trip. I will be staying overnight in Kangerlussuaq on my way back to Copenhagen from Ilulissat and your video helped me get oriented of the place in advance.

      Glad it was helpful. If you have time in Kangerlussuaq, you can visit the ice sheet and Russell Glacier. I shared those videos as well.

    Some are lights, but some are security cameras in that remote 500 people, ice glacier town's grocery store.

    It was BW-8 or Sondrestromfjord when I lived there for a year in 1960 -no town around-just an air base-that's why the big runwats are still there-it had been a USAF TAC base

    • @rodneyrhoads7975
      @rodneyrhoads7975 Год назад

      That;s runways not runwats

      Thank you for the comment. It is mind-blowing that the area has become a popular tourist destination now. I really wanted to visit the museum but unfortunately, it was closed due to the lack of workers. I heard that the museum was the headquarter of the USAF in Kangerlussuaq.

    So you took Albatros artic circle since they offered a hike onto the ice sheet,
    I understand not having bananas. It's a topic fruit that would have to be regularly imported. Locals probably not interested in bananas.we get all kind of stuff here in California

    • @WandererBell
      @WandererBell  Год назад

      Nobody is allowed to hike onto the ice sheet without a guided tour. I could not find bananas in Kangerlussuaq but I found them in other towns. I think they ran out of them because the shipment was delayed due to weather issues.

    Dinner was 25-40? No tip needed right? Yout right. For that price it's comparable to us. Did your meal include a drink

    • @WandererBell
      @WandererBell  Год назад +1

      Dinner is in that range 25-40 US dollars and sometimes is below that range and that includes a drink and tax. No tip in Greenland. I am really surprised that meals are not that expensive compared to Iceland, Switzerland, UK, USA, and other countries.

      @@hivemindconcussion2173 I bought a mosquito hat net too, but I did not feel the need to wear it because I used mosquito repellent for my clothing. I sprayed them before my trip and it lasted over 3 weeks. It works beautifully.

    as a greenlander, I've been to Kangerlussuaq a lot of times. But never further than 30 meter away from the airport, so it's the first time for me as it's to you. Also, I was surprised that there was no banana! 🫥
    anyways, hope you well 🇬🇱

      Thank you. There are a few good hiking trails that I did not get a chance to do. The black Ridge Trail, Sugarloof Mountain trail, and Garnet Rock trail. Perhaps next time I can hike there.

      I did not see a taxi there. I saw a local bus. There might be a taxi service that I am not aware of.
