Gosh, the hermit crab being classified as a bug would have thrown me for a loop too if I had played this as a kid. But as a biology/wildlife nerd, I am obliged to tell you that crustaceans are related to bugs. They are both arthropods, just like spiders (which are also not technically insects). It has to do with body structure/genetics, to put it simply. So when AC lumps crayfish/lobsters in with fish, that's actually wrong lol. Also me lowkey being kinda afraid/squicked out by bugs irl too, I'm basically Blathers.
If you dig a hole in front of the palm trees on Tortimer's Island, it really helps to gauge the correct distance - you just sneak up until you can't move anymore and it's perfect!

As someone who has never played the other Animal Crossing Games (i was a nintendogs kid/my mom only bought us math games for the ds) I really enjoy seeing the style of older gameplay! One of my core childhood memories - which I remembered while watching you play new leaf - is crying hysterically while playing animal crossing for GameCube because Resetti wouldn’t go away one day when I was playing.
Actually Resetti in Animal crossing wild world traumatized me so hard as a kid, that i was scared of going out my room because i thought Resetti would come out the ground and yell at me. I had literal nightmares because of this b*tch (I have ADD and always forgot to save) I also let my mom start Animal crossing for me because i was too afraid that he would show up😂😭
