I Wish we could get a Ninja Turtles movie like the 1990 film, it was so well executed, from the tone to the Turtle designs, to it just being a really good movie with a lot of heart, I really hope the new Turtles movie isn't just another flashy Hollywood dumpster fire with a ton of CGI and that it uses the old 1990 designs even though they've wasted away and that it has true heart to it, and that it has it's own unique stamp on it different from every other modern Blockbuster and that it has that same dark tone with some humor.
It just needs to be done right- Leonardo getting beat by Shredder 💔, using the purple Dragons as a stepping stone for story- they could show of things to come or have them be focused on then go to Shredder and/or Stockman in the reboot
I've actually always been fond of the idea of making a Ninja Turtles movie take place in the 80s. Technically, we got that with the 1990 film as it was likely filmed in 89, but 80s culture is so nostalgic and big right now that a modern film could really play up the era more and do something stylish with it. But personally, with the way old franchises are being revived these days, I would prefer a live action series that takes place after the original trilogy, that loosely acknowledges 2 and 3, but is more of a spiritual successor to 1. They could introduce characters like Karai, Stockman, Rat King, and even Hun.
I can give a quick list of Mirage issues that were adapted into the movie without even watching the video: Issue #1 (back ally fight/police arrival and origin story) Issue #2 (Splinter goes missing) Issue #3 (staying with April overnight) Raphael #1 (his first meeting/fight with Casey in Central Park) Leonardo #1 (originally Leo was beaten into a coma by the Foot but here that part was given to Raph instead/battle in April's apartment/Casey returns to help/Team Turtle go into exile) Issue #11 (April's journal) Issue #1 revisited (Splinters origin but told to Danny instead of the turtles) Return To New York (issue #'s 19, 20, and 21 (Team Turtle return to the city to finish their battle with the Foot, find Splinter and destroy Shredder, all that's missing is the Shredder mutants...bummer) Issue #1 one last time (rooftop fight and Shredder's demise falling off of the building, only he lands in the back of a garbage truck and gets compacted by Casey ("OOPS!") instead of landing in a dumpster and getting blown up by a thermite bomb) This was why the first movie was so good, because it respected the source material and even borrowed from it while also borrowing from the cartoon that was airing at the time but not enough to ruin the comic book material. Yes, there were some creative changes made here and there but rather than hurt the story they made it possible to adapt it into a live action movie. Now if only someone would be good enough to try this approach again and couple it with the film technology that we have today, a newer TMNT live action movie could actually be amazing.
@@jplaya2023 I don’t know. The only thing they borrowed from the comics was when the Turtles know of their origin relating to the Mutagen (or just “ooze” in the comics), but there are no utroms involved in the movie, due to limited resources and the inability to pull it off; instead, most of the movie is more of a promotion for future projects like Tokka and Rhazar or Super Shredder (that later appear in Turtles in Time, both Arcade and SNES) or more usage of their previously made toys for promotional material, as Splinter saves the turtles with a bow and arrow🏹, which the Playmates Splinter toy has.
@@robbiewalker2831 Yeah, it sucked because they had decided to veer away from the source material for the sequels after the first movie was deemed "to dark and violent" to continue with the same tone, and it also sucked that Professor Perry's true identity (the actual secret of the ooze) couldn't be revealed. Heck, they even swapped out the 'C' in TCRI with a 'G' in order to differentiate it.
That was cool. Even though Casey had an edgier personality that matched him with Raph right off the bat, he proved without even trying that he could match wits with and help Don. He even showed that he could be goofy like Mike and chosing to stay behind so everyone else could get to safety is something a good leader like Leo might do.
I just rewatched the 1990 movie yesterday, and just started rewatching the 2003 cartoon, and man, this is showing me that there was a lot of stuff the 2003 cartoon took almost directly from the original comics, and that honestly surprises me a bit
which is why I say of all the animated shows, 2003 was the superior product. it took more from the comic and made it work fairly well, for the most part.
I read all the original comics early into the pandemic. I remember someone telling me that the movie was pretty much based on the original comics and I was surprised to see how much of it actually was taken from the original material. I have a greater appreciation for both the original comics and the first movie. I also heard an interview with the director of the first film (Steve Baron) and he pretty stated that he took a lot of the story from the “source material” (comics). A lot of the pages of the comics look like a storyboard for the movie.
The 2003 show uses parts of issue 1and parts of issue 2 it gives backstory to the lead purple dragon that saki kills at the end of the episode in the Dreamweave comics and the kevin eastman looking police officer. the battleshell appears in vol. 4 of mirage tmnt when the turtles find a new lair and an armored truck from a hiest from the 1970's with a dead black guy in the truck. Episode two is faithful to the second issue of mirage with the dream wave comics giving backstory to baxter stockman and april and gives a tribute to new reporter april and engineer april and it fleshes out why baxter works for the foot and his fall to evil. The show skips issue three chase from the cops being mixed up with a robbery heist the 2003 show adapts Raphael one shot the mirage comics Tristan Jones would include Hun aka hunter mason & Charles Pennington in vol.4 mirage Canon and retcon hun as the turtles enemy before shredder utrom shredder based on issues 3 through t.c.r.i aliens
The season one goes in a different direction but the show uses the exile to Massachusetts to Casey's farm leonardos micro series Michaelangelo micro series Donatello micro series the show uses return to new york twice the season season uses the epilogue of issue 3 4 5 and 6
You have to respect how difficult it is to make a live action ninja turtles movie. For one thing no matter what origin story you give Splinter, half the fan base will be upset. For another you somehow need to make actors who are very much human and don't have shells, look like giant turtles. We've had animatronics that now look like zombie carcasses and we've now also had whatever the hell the suits the Micheal Bay turtle actors had to wear for hours on a hot movie set.
Always thought the way the turtles time traveled in turtles 3 was similar to the way it was done in that Cerebrus team up issue. They both use these mysterious staffs even though they look slightly different.
Bad-@$$ 👍 it's nice to see that they used some of the elements from different sources and worked it into the story for the film. Not changing too much of it.
Awesome video 👍 would love to see this done also for the other movies second third and even the Michael Bay films. I realize this would be even looser comparisons as they probably took even less from the original comic canon but if there's anything at all it would be cool to know about it. It would be cool to see this done for the original cartoon series also.
If they did the triceradon story, the creature designs could have been by the jim henson company as they worked on the short lived family t.v. series dinosaurs on the ABC Network.
Incredible video. One of your best yet. I really enjoy the comparisons between the 90’s movie and the comics. A lot of the scenarios also appear in the 2003 cartoon series which I think is extremely underrated. Really enjoyed this video. Keep up the great work.
I Loved the first movie 🍿🎥 However I would've Loved The Cosmic Stuff too even if they had limited special effects, I mean George Lucas gave us Star Wars and that was in the 70's and the 80's ,Paul Verhoeven gave us RoboCop also James Cameron gave us Terminator 1 and Terminator 2 that was the early 90's so I most definitely believed it would've worked.
I knew as a kid that the old more violent comic book had elements that the movie copied, but still I never knew that the producers took elements from all the old comics to make the first movie. Arguably the first Ninja Turtles movie was one of the very best films in the 1990's, it still works today in the 2020's with that at the time state of the art puppetry & no lousy CGI effects. No wonder I loved it so much as a kid.
It would be cool to have the new Live-Action TMNT Movie adapt the 1984 Mirage Comics and 2012 Series. The Movie should also adapt the Mirage Comic Leonardo Micro Series and this time we have Leonardo badly injured in live action just like in the 2012 Series.
rat king is the best villain and makes the absolute most sense for them to always be fighting or having neutral encounters with throughout their entire lives in the sewers.
Great video. I may have to re-watch the film this weekend. It's one of the only films I can watch repeatedly and never get enough. I love being a turtle!
Nailed it.. thought you might leave out the micro-series tie-ins but you got em. When I read the “return to New York” I always have the movie music in my head, the scene where the foot clan invade the lair at the end of the movie. Best comic adaptation by far.
It's worth mentioning that the Turtle origin tale Splinter tells Danny was adapted with the Oroku Nagi element in the comic book movie adaptation, and is also present in the original script. I'm not sure if it was filmed that way, but if it was, it was obviously edited to streamline the story to keep it between Yoshi and Saki.
Hey I am I big fan of the ninja turtles and your channel and I would like to ask has there been anymore updates on a ninja turtles 1990 extended cut or a 4k release?
Fighting triceratons in that space arena, baxter's look, the ooze canisters being labeled TCRI instead of TGRI like the second movie, are all in the second animated series that started in 2003. Its a very cool series and now that ive watched this video i can say there is a lot of the original comics content in it! It wasn't in movies but made it on tv at least! The 2003 series is on RUclips! Check it out!
I always thought they could have integrated Baxter Stockman into TMNT 2. Had it that Baxter was building mousers and later find out that the company that he was working for was TGRI that created the ooze in the first place
Imagine an early 90s Billie Dee Williams playing a sociopathic mad scientist/terrorist in a Ninja Turtles movie. Unfortunately, at that time he was aiming to play another comic book villain that didn't pan out. Imagine though if they made a sequel that stayed true to the 1990 film and had Stockman/The Mousers and the Utroms (I know they almost made the script.)
I read the comics and I’m surprised how much they adapted into movie. Some of dialog is the same and like the scene with Don and Casey fixing the truck
It would be cool if we got a direct sequel to this movie (ignoring 2 and 3) and it adapts stockman and the utroms as faithful to the mirage comics as this first film did
It would have been great if the Third movie was the utrom/TCRI plot and the scientist was an utrom. It would be a success and make enough money the fourth film-city at war.
Its cool that some scenes in the movie are straight from the original comics I didn't know that good video I grew up with ninja turtles movies just watched the 2007 CGI movie few weeks ago never watched it before and it wasn't bad better than those giant clunky abomination turtles movies
I wonder what the thinking was behind swapping Leonardo with Raphael in the rooftop beatdown, it works better with Leonardo, & the rooftop fight with Shredder would've worked better with Raphael losing his temper & being held at spear point just before Splinter shows up.
With how popular the MCU is and all the cosmic stuff they do, I don't see why we couldn't get a cosmic TMNT film. Though, they'd have to make a successful trilogy first that covers the core elements of the TMNT before changing things up and throwing them in space with aliens. Unfortunately, that'll never happen seeing as nobody will ever treat the TMNT with the same respect the 1990 film did.
I have issues #1, #10 & #11 of the main series as well as the 1st issues of both Raphael & Leonardo micro series in IDW Color Classics variations. Well, I also have the hardcover book Volume 1 which is issues #1-#7 & Raphael Micro Series #1. Imagine if TMNT II & TMNT III could've been dark in tone like the 1st movie (like, screw the complaints from parents). Maybe TMNT II could've used elements from issues #4-#7 where the turtles infiltrate TCRI (TGRI in the movie's case) where they see the Utroms (including Professor Jordan Perry, who was originally supposed to be an Utrom anyway) & accidentally get teleported to another planet where they meet Fugitoid & have to deal with the waring Federation & Triceraton factions, especially if they wanted to keep TMNT II subtitled The Secret of the Ooze. TMNT III could maybe be the City at War story or simply just have to deal with Dr. Baxter Stockman & his Mouser robots.
Be nice to see a new tmnt tv series with the same dark tone as the original movie 🎬 14 episodes to tell 1 turtles tastic story. If session 1 was awesome 👌 then session 2 should be even better. That would be dope.
I wish the movie kind of built on casey and Ralph friendship more the only character Casey has banter with is somewhat donnie in the garage when the two are fixing the car they insult each other in a fun way . Ralph and Casey being best buddies is aspect of the franchise that's kind of wholesome the two are both hot tempered strong and Brooklyn accents Ralph is all about honor and justice and casey is more revengful and bitter 2003 series really was the best at showing this .
@@Cousinbiddy1 literally no, the 87 show everyone is silly, Shredder Leo Raph everyone more then just Mike, the 1990 movie is intense and everyone is written perfectly, for it’s time it’s pretty dark and I’d say darker then marvel and DC usually is now
New Line Cinema: We want to make a movie based on the TMNT. Mirage Comics: Cool! i'm guessing it's based on the 1987 cartoon series. New Line Cinema: Nope! it's gonna be based on the comic. So..... we'll cram all that Lore into 1h 35m Mirage Comics: WhAt!!!!!!!!!
It’s definitely the best tmnt of all time. Rotten tomatoes score on the film is an absolute joke. It’s a perfect film for it’s time and still holds up to this day!
When I've watched this movie kinda recently loved it entirely, and loved it even more after being able to read the comics, absolutely amazing movie. Loved how they were able to have mostly of the TMNT 1987 casting for the voices from the Latin American dub, that was a nice touch 😋
Great stuff! It’s worth mentioning that it was originally Raph who was helping Casey with the truck. Regardless of the small differences, we 100% agree, the first TMNT movie will always be #1.
The sequel would have brought Baxter Stockman , the mouser's a mutated Baxter at the end and a beach 🏖️ surfing TMNT scene with Paige turco in a yellow 💛 👙 bikini 😎 dude!!!!

It would be cool if we got a direct sequel to this movie (ignoring 2 and 3) and it adapts stockman and the utroms as faithful to the mirage comics as this first film did
We need trilogy that keeps the dark and gritty tone, but more violent, while staying close to the comics as possible.
The Teenage mutant Ninja Turtles..Rated R.
Why do ppl say tmnt 1990 film is dark , I remember as a kid , this film felt more like a goofy 1987 cartoon rather than a dark 2003 cartoon show
@@Cousinbiddy1 Because it was dark to us.
@@theunholinesswithin70 but jokes and were very slapstick like the 1987 show
@@Cousinbiddy1 Whatever...
One day I will get tmnt #1.😀👍🐢
Bout time we got some more tmnt1990 movie videos bk! 😄 Any news on a directors cut or Kim Dawsons reboot?
Hello I have subscribed to your RUclips channel
The teen foot recruits are an amalgamation of the purple dragons and foot
Casey seems to be fixing the car with Raphael in the book

Ya
I honestly liked it better thst raph got beat by the foot than leo
This is the best Turtle movie by far
I still love this movie
Leo actually impaled shredder with his katana and forced him to commit seppuku a ritual suicide
the 1990 TMNT movie is THE best Turtles movie, BY FAR! there will never be another anywhere close

🤩AWESOME
Wow bro. How old is the copy of No. 1 you're showing. That paper is yellowed lol. Respect ment, must be an old book. I'm jealous.
0:40 song name?
Wasn't comic April writing to her sister Robyn that lived in California?
I think any version of TMNT should start with all red bandanas and I wish the movie had that probably up until they leave the farm or something

@@Cousinbiddy1 literally no, the 87 show everyone is silly, Shredder Leo Raph everyone more then just Mike, the 1990 movie is intense and everyone is written perfectly, for it’s time it’s pretty dark and I’d say darker then marvel and DC usually is now
@@teaganthedashman i guess I haven’t seen the film for a long time, is the film seriousness and humor feels like a 2003 animated show instead ?
The Casey and April relationships from comics? What issues came from the comics? Or was that in later issues after the movie?

New Line Cinema: We want to make a movie based on the TMNT.
Mirage Comics: Cool! i'm guessing it's based on the 1987 cartoon series.
New Line Cinema: Nope! it's gonna be based on the comic.
Mirage Comics: Oh Cool! so which comic is the flim based on.
New Line Cinema: well how many TMNT comics are there.
Mirage Comics: Well..... as of right now 19!
New Line Cinema: Cool! So..... we'll cram all that Lore into 1h 35m
Mirage Comics: WhAt!!!!!!!!!
thank you.
I love the mirage comics

It’s definitely the best tmnt of all time. Rotten tomatoes score on the film is an absolute joke. It’s a perfect film for it’s time and still holds up to this day!
Thankfully they did not add April's origin to the movie. 😳😳😳
What if Leatherhead was in the movie
When I've watched this movie kinda recently loved it entirely, and loved it even more after being able to read the comics, absolutely amazing movie. Loved how they were able to have mostly of the TMNT 1987 casting for the voices from the Latin American dub, that was a nice touch 😋

Great stuff! It’s worth mentioning that it was originally Raph who was helping Casey with the truck. Regardless of the small differences, we 100% agree, the first TMNT movie will always be #1.
