As a life-long fan I made my peace by accepting this version as the "one and only". Also, good as this video was (as usual), reading it in the comic hits you in a different way since it is not spoiled right at the beginning. It's a story that's building in the background as the whole story moves forward and it's surprising to say the least. I will never get tired of telling people this will forever be the best version out there, ever.

As someone who grew up with the original turtles in the early 90's, I really enjoy the IDW comics. It's a very fascinating and fresh take on their origins and gives the characters depth.
This one is really cool. With so many 'backgrounds' and 'resets' being done... you just get sick of it after a while. But I'll admit, this is the best background for paying homage to the original Black/White TMNT while still making it their own thing. The spiritual part actually makes perfect sense, Reincarnation is a common belief in Japan and other Eastern Countries. if u can accept Mutated Ninja Turtles then this isn't much of a stretch. Yoshi, Shen, the Mutation, even the original Red headbands... it stays VERY CLOSE to its roots while making their own TMNT Universe and its certainly badass! This one I keep with my original TMNT comics because for the beginning, its just so damn good and for all the right reasons!! The perfect blend of building off the old and making it better in many ways. So yeah - IDW has done similar great works with other 80's franchises such as Transformers as well, most G1 already know but if you didn't, then just like this... their early runs were amazing and order the back-issues. It's worth it and then some... If you could combine this initial background with both the Grit, Drama, AND Fun of the 1990 Movie, BW series/Mirage line, with IDW making their own unique "take" on some of the more popular stories from that timeline, and then toss in the actual 2003 Animation... let's just say "Perfect Storm" and now let's fit it all together. What a great way to perfect an already awesome formula! Your not just being told Shredder is the bad guy here, after seeing such a horrific act, you automatically hate this guy and want to see him pay in blood. Further, Splinter's dynamic as their Father is much more real and tangible. He loves them no matter what they look like. Simple things that don't need to even be said but are there and tangible... now that is damn good writing! Likewise, I hope somehow they draw off this 'spiritual' dynamic for THE LAST RONIN. I don't want Raph/Leo/Don to be imaginary. It would be great to see them grown up. This could be a believable and great way to bring them back somehow in that future timeline. I still believe there is something to Mikey's brothers being visible and heard only by him to pay off in the final issue when it comes out - I've laid it out in my comments with the biggest 5 questions that need to be solved in the last issue. This would be a great way to do it! Just something to consider. It happened before - it can happen again! Long essay here I know... its something I'm passionate about. The IDW got the personality of everyone right and explained where it came from in a believable way. (In the TMNT universe at least) This could also explain why the turtles have lost their memory and reached out to Mikey, the fluid Karai is sleeping in looks like something similar to the immortality potion Shredder used, the blood samples... three vials, maybe t's adding up to the right catalyst to reincarnation? Could you imagine Mikey teaching his new little brothers all he's learned and being reunited? Insane Dynamite! This is leading up to what could be the best Turtles issue ever! Or... a bit of a let down. Still means I'll be there. Have been since 1984.
I was quite fascinated with IDW's take on turtle's origins and every volume gets me excited to see what happens next. Also if you were to do another video based on the Idw comics could you maybe talk about the beginning metal head and donnie because their story in the comics is quite interesting. 🐢🐢🐢🐢
I think the IDW ongoing is my favorite iteration. Maybe the medium just lets me spend more time with the characters tho the action is always better animated. I'm behind on hardbound collected editions and need to get back on that.
The hardbound collections are so worth it. I had to overpay for one of the volumes since it was so hard to find, but I'm glad to be caught up currently. Eagerly awaiting volume 14!
I love this origin story! It brought so many tears when I read it. It's the absolute best and I've told friends and bought comics for them so that they can enjoy it as much as I have! But, there is one thing that you're missing. I don't remember in which issue or in which spinoff, but Krang came to earth after the beheading of the Hamatos and took some DNA from them. I was hoping that that was in this video. Can you confirm that and maybe add it to the video? I would love to hear what you think about it and what you understood from it. Thanks!
IDW has been a great fit for TMNT. I loved what they've done for Transformers & G.I. Joe but the work that has been done on TMNT has been for me, the best out of all of them! This by far is a great origin story, plus adding new villains like Old Hob, their versions of Hun & Bishop. It's just been a thrill to read the comics!
I love the tmnt idw comics and at the end of the day I like the origin they came up with and I respect it for being new and different and how it established a beef between the hamato clan and the shredder
I WAITED A YEAR OR SO FOR THIS COMIC AND I LIVED BEHIND A COMIC SHOP AND I WENT THE FIRST DAY AND THE COMIC WAS SOLD OUT I WAS SO SAD BUT A WEEK OR SO LATER I GOT THE FIRST ISSUE AND FELL IN LOVE GREAT COMIC!
It's been a while, but I got this vibe that for many of the IDW mutants, they seemed to have a surprisingly human personality, like they were reincarnated humans.
I like the tragic, reincarnation as its answers a question of Donatello's from Secret of the ooze; they are not a mistake. Its fate, karma, to make Saki pay for his crimes! I do not like April owning them and naming them. April's reaction to meeting them in the 1990 movie is just too perfect. April as a news reporter makes the most sense. So does the TMNT growing up in the sewer. I think the daredevil homage, "ooze" falling off a truck, the blind guy are to integral to the existence of TMNT to be removed. I do like Baxter working for Krang or the Utrom.. It explains how he can create something that, from a design perspective looks similar to Utrom technology. It also makes his later mutation into a fly more plausible without too many mutants running around. Going back to the samurai stuff, I think the teens, becoming adults, after traveling to ancient feudal Japan would learn, and unlock past life memories. In that process they would gain spiritual, elemental powers to face again the dark Foot Mystics trying to once again resurrect their dark lord the demon Shredder. As for Baxters assistant, that was originally April, I would make that Irma who reaches out to April to become a Stocktronics Whistleblower. I would have her be a young, unpaid intern closer to Donatello's age. Then they can geek out together and be "the guy in the chair" for the TMNT. That's just my personal head canon, as I love slices of each version of TMNT pizza pie!
I'm a huge turtle fan & I've never heard of this version of them before this is dark twist & here they're really the sons of Homato Yoshi who later becomes Splinter. I hope they do adapt this to a animated show & maybe a live action version this is a dark, tragic & twisted version of the turtles I see they went back & made April a lab assistant to Baxter Stickman.
This origin story is pretty wild and interesting, but there's one huge issue with it that irked me the whole time I was reading these issues recently: I get it how they might already be "teenaged" after mutating, and I get it how they can access their past life memories, but how can they instantly speak English and how do they instantly act like modern teens? In that sense their modern teenager personalities don't feel naturally developed and earned. I would like it much more if they had to go through a several years acclimation period. I like it in other versions how Splinter had to raise them. I guess he did do it in the past, but back then he raised Feudal time Japanese boys instead of modern New Yorker kids.
Completely unrelated but I personally think the best design for the turtles is the TMNT movie. On top of that I think that is the best turtles movie, it’s well paced unlike the original movie. The original is just too slow. And before anyone attacks me on the spot, I’m just saying it’s slow not saying there needs to be more action. I’m a perfectly balanced type of guy when it comes to plot and action, a good movie needs good action and plot.
i can't get jiggy with the whole reincarnation thing fully, but i did like how they all wore the classic red and then eventually got their unique colors afterwards.
If there were an anime/manga style adaption for the IDW series where it was completely faithful to the source material, I think this iteration of the turtles would definitely be hailed as the greatest era.
man They took some Turtle Herb or something ngl was at first not liking it but as i got older now past 10 years now being 26 i've grown to like it a bit more than i did 10 years ago. a cool way to retell an origin and did a mishmash of a new origin with a bit of the old.
I wonder if Tigerfog got his idea from the IDW for Renoir for his MNT Gaiden web comic. Renoir was a human kid but was eaten by one of Donnies experiments, by accident, and it took on the memories and personalities of the now late Renoir and is now Renoir the mutant turtle.
In 1957 the fight on Japan is still going on with the battle between Hamato Clan and the Foot Clan has been though out centuries. And then Hamato Clan has finally defeated the Foot Clan, Hamato Yuukai found Orokus Saki as a baby boy, and then he raised him as his son, and Oroku Saki became the member of the Hamato family, especially the brother of Hamato Yoshi. In 60's to 70's these two young japanese warriors train so hard to become ninjas, but somehow they were trained as rivals and all things as brothers are, and that rival turned bitter when these two met Tang Shen lover of Hamato Yoshi, and ex-lover of Oroku Saki, and then in 1981 Yoshi and Shen are finally married, And then when Oroku Saki showed up at front of these two he got angry so he has grown jealous and his rivaly festered became hatred were he's acting so cruel at front Hamato Yoshi and say mean things about him. Hamato Yoshi realize that he could've choose to ignore him, and let his words wash over him like a river over stone, but he let him angered him. And then Oroku Saki let his own brother beat him up, then when he backs down he left Hamato Clan and never come back. In 1988 their only child was born, known as Miwa Hamato because she's a baby daughter of Hamato Yoshi and Tang Shen. So then after 5 years where Oroku Saki disappeared forever, he turned out evil as he became the Shredder and rebuild the Foot Clan, In 1989 Shredder and his gang of Foot Ninjas has engage to attack Hamato Clan, and he showed up again at front of Hamato Yoshi and tried to kill him when they're still fighting, but he did strike on his wife Tang Shen instead. So the blazing house of the Hamato family was crumble down were Shredder destroyed Hamato Yoshi's home, murdered his wife Tang Shen, and took away his only child Miwa. But Yoshi needs to hear what Shen say her last words, and her last breath at him before she died "Yoshi... Please promise me... please don't get your revenge on Saki... I love you." and Yoshi replied to her "Yes... I promised, and I love you too Tang Shen." and then after she died Yoshi cried out were he did loss his home, family, and name. But then in 1989 he was moved to New York from Tokyo, and by 1999 Hamato Yoshi was now a mid-age man who's lives in the shack near by the beach, and then he collected 4 male infant green sea turtles and keep them as pets and adoptive sons so he name them Donatello, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo. And then in 20 since after two years were he did named his pet baby turtles and adoptive sons after his favorite italian artists from the book of the Art of the Italian Renaissance, Yoshi manage to fight one of the Foot Ninjas a truck drive drove straigh and turned so the canister of mutagen fro the TCRI just slipped out and crash and shattered, until when Yoshi was still fighting Foot Ninjas he accidently dropped the class bowl of 4 baby turtles until then it too was shattered so these are crawling slowy towards to the puddle of glowing green ooze from from the broken canister near by, and then after when Yoshi was helped by Hideaki Sato Daniel Gordon in the fight, the Foot Ninjas retreat so he met Hideaki and his family his daughter Elizabeth, and his wife Roxanne. So after when Hideaki and his family thank him the just left him, and then Yoshi turned around fast saw what happened to his pet baby turtles are already walked into the puddle of mutagen and covered by green ooze, so he pick them up take 'em to the shack at the beach, and then wiping 'em down with a towel, but then suddenly he's got mutagen ooze on his hands and shirt, so when he went to the bathroom and wash his hands, and he also taking his shirt off and toss it in the basket, so then he was his face. And so now he looked himself at the mirror though what happen next is he saw wiskers grow from his upper lips even a rat at the above bathroom wardrobe near by was looking at Hamato Yoshi was looked himself in the mirror and when he's exposed from mutagen, his face got stretch, his ears changing into rat hears, his skin grows fur, got a rat tail growing from his body rear, and got rat teeth from his upper mouth, and got his nails grow sharppen into rat claws were he got mutated into a human-born rat. And then he looked himslf at the mirror again, and see what had become something... different. But he's not the only one, when he got out of the bathroom he saw his pet baby turtles got mutated the same way, as they are doubled in size into animal-born mutant turtles, but they're still toddlers, even they're almost like part human, but they had had three fingers on each hands, two toes on both feet, and also they're boldy, and the also they had shells like a turtle. So after they left the shack from the beach, they'd decided to moved to the New York Sewers to be kept hidden in secret. And so now the New York Sewer is new home, when these turtles are 7 years old they watched Splinter was showing his four adoptive sons his fighting skills with his sword were he learned ninjisu because he lead the training, and when it's Leo's turn he can show his brothers and his adoptive father and mentor his fighting skills with the sword also known as Katana, and when it's Mikey's turn he can show skillful he is with Nunchucks, and it's Donnie's turn he can how skilled with the staff also known as Bō, and then Raph's turn will be last as he can show how skillfull he is with the pare of Sais. and now in the year 2016 before 2017 were the turtles are now 14 or 15 are getting masks or bandanas which Leonardo gets the blue mask, Raphael get the red mask, Donatello gets the purple mask, and Michelangelo gets the orange mask, and now the weapons like Shuriken for the four of them, with Nunchucks for the pizza lover Mikey, Bō for the genius one Donnie, the twin Sai for the hothead Raph, and twin Katana for the leader Leonardo and finally they have became the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
I personally hate this origin story version but mainly because I grew up with the original story from the 80s comics I can appreciate what they did in reimagining the origin story for a new generation but growing up with the original myself just seems off for me to accept anything different maybe if we didn’t live in a society that feels they have to reimagine or reboot nearly everything that’s been done before maybe if it wasn’t constantly happening it’s possible it’d be easier for me to accept because it isn’t a bad story it’s actually really good I just can’t accept it as a true tmnt origin story personally
I've been a TMNT fan for most of my life and I'm going to be honest. I hate the reincarnation origin. It's basically saying the spirits of these characters are nothing more then trash to be recycled and reused, instead of truly being unique individuals and that it adds needless drama and plot complications.

Thanks for finally talking about this. Ive been geeked about it since it started. I hope Seth Rogen uses this origin.
I was quite fascinated with IDW's take on turtle's origins and every volume gets me excited to see what happens next. Also if you were to do another video based on the Idw comics could you maybe talk about the beginning metal head and donnie because their story in the comics is quite interesting. 🐢🐢🐢🐢
Hey The Old Turtle Den can you do a ranking of all 5 TMNT TV Shows ranked from worst to best please.
Damn, cool origin
I think the IDW ongoing is my favorite iteration. Maybe the medium just lets me spend more time with the characters tho the action is always better animated. I'm behind on hardbound collected editions and need to get back on that.
The hardbound collections are so worth it. I had to overpay for one of the volumes since it was so hard to find, but I'm glad to be caught up currently. Eagerly awaiting volume 14!
Yeah they are really worth it. They also look great on a shelf next to each other with the different color covers.
@@twothirdsanexplosive agreed. I really like the different colored banding on each volume
We need this as an animated series
My favorite incarnation of the TMNT
this is hands down the best story and origin of them i love this seris very much
I love this origin story! Thanks!
I love how this just reinforces the 2003 to be the most canon
This was very informative! Please continue with the idw saga introduction for newbies!
IDW has been a great fit for TMNT. I loved what they've done for Transformers & G.I. Joe but the work that has been done on TMNT has been for me, the best out of all of them! This by far is a great origin story, plus adding new villains like Old Hob, their versions of Hun & Bishop. It's just been a thrill to read the comics!
honestly IDW doesn't miss, the current IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comic is amazing
I swear its a mix of 80s, 2003 and 2012 Ninja Turtles I love this
I never knew this existed! I love it! It was awesome!
What a great spin on a already classic origin story 10/10
I really enjoyed this comic series very good new take on the origins of the Turtles.
Tell me why I was moved to tears for the origin story. Man! That is definitely the most tragic origin story I’ve heard for my dudes.
Being a parent my eyes welled up at the part where the boys are placed in front of their father😢
As someone who believes in reincarnation. I like this origin.
Love this story hope they make a movie one day that uses some of that and just make a good grown up version of the turtles again
Good video! I didnt even know about this origin story! Thank you very much!
I love the tmnt idw comics and at the end of the day I like the origin they came up with and I respect it for being new and different and how it established a beef between the hamato clan and the shredder
This is like Ultimate Spiderman but for TMMT
As in it's a celebration of all previous versions
I WAITED A YEAR OR SO FOR THIS COMIC AND I LIVED BEHIND A COMIC SHOP AND I WENT THE FIRST DAY AND THE COMIC WAS SOLD OUT I WAS SO SAD BUT A WEEK OR SO LATER I GOT THE FIRST ISSUE AND FELL IN LOVE GREAT COMIC!
Was Raph being attacked by the cat that carried him off, then mutating from the ooze dripping off Raph?
Yep😁
Yes
I always looked at it as Hameto died without honor, so he was reincarnated as a lesser being. The rat.
I'm excited for this video^^
Great origin story. Love this channel
I want a movie based off this I want dark and gory!!! Like that one fan comic of Splinter and Shredders past!!!
It's been a while, but I got this vibe that for many of the IDW mutants, they seemed to have a surprisingly human personality, like they were reincarnated humans.
Ok. This is my favorite origin for the TMNT. I have to get into the comics
Wow! I think I'll give it a try! I'm currently reading the Last Ronin
WOW! This is soooo freaking Awesome!!!! 😭👏👏👏👏👏
More of this please 🐢 and enjoyed the video
I always wait to get the tradeback so I can read the whole story arc in one sitting.
My favorite version of the TMNT. It's the potential of the Mirage comics fully realized.
I love with this origin you can understand to some extent why splinter and the turtles where all so smart from there very beginnings.
I like this origin alot more then the other one out there. Feels like a movie
So freaking cool!! I love it.
I miss idw comics so much .
Wow awesome video! Is this like the 1st issue etc.
First time hearing this IDW version of the TMNT
To be honest it was because of the origin of the Idw TMNT series is what drove me away from it for a time. I mean it was just too much to deal.
Why isn't this an animated series or an anime something beyond a comic.
I really love the IDW series.
Its such a great story.
I literally just got Volume 1 in the mail today I read the whole first arc and the Raphael one shot
Not feeling the “They use to be human” origin. #DoingTooMuch #StayAuthentic
Man the group in their human lives are so well designed. Even if they all wore the same color you could probably guess who is who.
The IDW comics are excellent I would recommend them to any TMNT fan
I wonder if Tigerfog got his idea from the IDW for Renoir for his MNT Gaiden web comic. Renoir was a human kid but was eaten by one of Donnies experiments, by accident, and it took on the memories and personalities of the now late Renoir and is now Renoir the mutant turtle.
This version should get its own animation
I love this origin...now for Yoshi to keep his promise regarding Saki
Wow brutal, I dig it
I love the art style it suits this origin has that traditional painted look in some panels...
In the words of one turtle
COWABUNGAAAA!!!
I want this series as a live action Paramount + show!!!
It put me in 😢 tears 😥
More IDW turtles content please!

I agree this is a great origin story.
...this is probably the saddest origin I've ever heard.
This would make as a dope asf animated series
This story was hardcore!!!
I hope the new movie incorporates some aspects of this.
I've been a TMNT fan for most of my life and I'm going to be honest. I hate the reincarnation origin. It's basically saying the spirits of these characters are nothing more then trash to be recycled and reused, instead of truly being unique individuals and that it adds needless drama and plot complications.
