Was there in 1990 when this film came out. The late 1980’s, early 90’s punk/crime setting just fits the Turtles world perfectly and simply can’t be replicated today. I’m very grateful for the filmmakers who decided to not water the film down all that much for kids. Shredder to this day is absolutely intimidating beyond belief. As a full grown adult, I appreciate that fact more and more each time I watch the film today. No matter how much CGI and motion capture continues to evolve, this film proves that you simply can’t beat actors, in suits, in front of the camera, giving it their all. Easily one of the best comic book films of all time.
100% bro, can't replace practicality with cheap CGI, movies today suck because of that, today they even use CGI knives and graphics for cuts n stabs how cheap and lazy can you be?? Not to mention the grainy texture of the film I reckon is awesome it gives it that grungy comic book real world feel not the hd brightened up versions, they ruin the film n show it's defects
I love this movie so damn much. Still have my childhood VHS copy and a sealed copy.....the pizza hut ad at the start is just as iconic as the movie its self. Every time i watch the DVD,not have the ad makes me feel like i missed part of the movie.
This is still the best film adaptation of the turtles (insert dontay wilder meme here). Its clear that this film did not have the issues that from part 2 onward (aside from tmnt) would have, a creative team that understood the material and no studio interference. What many people forget is that tmnt 1990 was an independent film, as no studio would touch the script, and when it was released, would become the highest grossing independent film until it was dethroned by blair witch project,
Amazing how the second film would have been more what was expected of a live-action adaptation at the time, but the fact that the first film manages to get the feel of the dreariness of the original comics while also blending in some of the color and lightheartedness of the animated show of the time and not make it feel off balance is quite a miracle looking back.
Just recently saw this on the big screen and it holds up 100%. The suits in particular still look incredible, it’s crazy that we’ve known that we can have physical Turtle actors in front of the camera since 1990 and Hollywood refuses to try it again. Just imagine with modern technology how good those animatronics would be.

Animatronics haven't really advanced much since Jim Henson died. TMNT is the last thing Jim worked on before he died suddenly in 1990. Animatronics now are mostly used at theme parks to perform stunts that are deemed too dangerous for stuntmen to perform. But the advancement of CGI since 1990 has greatly advanced.

The 2K3 show perfectly captures the vibes of the 1st 90s TMNT film, being dark, grim, and gritty like the OG conics, with a dash of lightheartedness thats overly oozing in the 87 toon
One of the few movies I can say I've seen about 100 times. The suits were Jim Henson at his best, and it's impressive the stunts they were able to pull off. And as much as they borrowed from the early Mirage comics, I LOVE that the film ended on a familiar note from the cartoon. Also, for such a set-driven movie, you never get that sense because of how well they captured NYC. Lastly, Corey Feldman as Donatello! ☢ 🐢 🥋 ⚔ 🍕
Should be noted that the multicolored bandanas actually came from the Playmate's line which then had the animated show produced to advertise the figures. According to the Mirage guys Playmates didn't think they could sell 4 identical turtle figures if only their weapons were different so Peter Laird came up with the colors for each of them of course David Wise from the animated series used to argue he came up with everything but you can't deny that Playmate's was the one that shopped the figures around to animation studios looking for a series...
I once heard David Wise claim that he didn't create the Turtles, just everything about them that made them popular, which just isn't true at all. Kids weren't tuning in to see the antics of April's annoying Channel 6 co-workers or any of his contributions. Peter Laird recounted on his blog a lawsuit between Mirage and the cartoon people where they were trying to take credit for stuff that they didn't actually come up with, such as putting April in a jumpsuit.
This is definitely the best movie adaptation of the TMNT comics, as none of the other TMNT movies actually adapt any of the comics. It also happens to be the best in terms of just being a movie. The 2003 cartoon made by 4Kids was also a good adaptation, even though it also changed some elements. A large part of that was due to the fact that co-creator Peter Laird was heavily involved with this cartoon.
I really liked TMNT 2012. Like it definitely shuffles a lot around and takes a lot of pieces from other series, movies and comics. Makes a nice blend they do a pretty good job at making cohesively blend together not to mention adding some new stuff that isn't to odd.
This movie & Dick Tracy are the best live action CBMs of the ‘90s, perhaps the best of all live action CBMs pre 2002. Both are great and better than Batman ‘89 & Returns. Mask of the Phantasm beats all though
Greatest movie of all time, we just need all the deleted scenes and shots reinstated and then we won't need another film. Unless it's the same universe as this! Everybody get yourself a copy of the screenplay and check out all the cut scenes and shots you won't believe amount of good stuff missing
I knew of the turtles well before this film came out. I had a couple of friends that were comic book collectors and this is one of them that they collected. It was great to see them in this film. It was also great to see it with my whole family as my daughter who was 6 at the time was in a provincial bowling tournament out of town so I took the whole family, Myself my wife and the 3 kids to see this one in the theater one evening during the weekend. We all loved it a LOT and even to this day we will at times start singing the "Turtle Power" rap that rolls over the credits. One of the few rap songs I really really like. (yes, I am old) Great memories.

I know a lot of people hold it up as great, but I didn't like the animation, I thought they took it far too seriously which made it feel less fun, and I didn't like the crossover with the 80's/90's Ninja Turtles where they made them into buffoons. The 2012 series on the other hand was serious when it needed to be, had amazing voice acting and the crossovers with the 80's/90's Ninja Turtles was actually fun and brought back original voice actors and was respectful. As someone that grew up with the original cartoons and movie, I loved the balance and even the new flavors, even if I was put off by the CG animation at first.
I still remember how disappointed my friends and I were with Secret of the Ooze when Rocksteady and Bebop weren’t in it, but the “Go- Play… have fun” scene was awesome to young me. Pushing over power poles with the subtle humor of “let them get their own cab” by the unphased New Yorker was perfect And while Super Shredder is kinda dumb, I still love EVERY. SINGLE. FRAME that he’s in. From helmet to the sound of spurs when he walks to give life to the oversized armor… still not sure how drinking a small vial changes your clothes and armor… but for all it’s many many faults, it’s just a fun movie that does a great job of expanding on the original… I’m just glad they didn’t do a third TMNT movie after Ooze… Because they *didn’t* They stopped at 2 and nothing more came of that era of movies or specials or anything of the sort Just 2 movies… yup… one beloved and one that’s not as good but still a solid sequel before calling it a day That was a wrap as they say on the 2 movies and nothing more for TMNT

Nice, I was wondering if you guys were ever going to cover this one. You missed a few things though: 1. Baxter Stockman had a (very) brief cameo despite the changes made to the events of Mirage issue #2 and the absence of the Mousers. He can be seen walking past a storm drain with a bag of groceries just as Raph screams in rage as the turtles discover that Splinter is missing. 2. The part in the movie when the turtles are staying at April's apartment is borrowed from issue #3 with the only part that's missing being the high adrenaline police chase. 3. This is more of an Easter egg but we found out from NECA's replica ooze canister from the first movie that it originally said TCRI on the back (the part that we couldn't see in the movie...of course) and it was also originally made of metal. For some reason the canister was changed to glass with metal caps in Secret of the Ooze and the company initials were now TGRI. Thanks for finally covering this 1990s childhood classic, it was a long time coming.
Thats a random elderly black dude Baxter wasn't in the 1990 film he was supposed to be a white washed composite of the white version that becomes a fly in the 87 cartoon, an utrom and revealed to be either professor perry who created the t.g.r.i mutagen in secret of the ooze or a cameo worker of the secret of the ooze, i dont believe that was baxter stockman cameoing as a guy walking past the storm drain as raphael screams crys out and whimpers, The part of the turtles living with april is a composite of issue 3 issue 4 and leonardo micro series but it does not have the high speed Volkswagen mini bus chase sequence mistaken for a robbery that vehicle is reserved for the turtles leaving nyc after the silent partner scene and abandoning it on caseys farm house in Massachusetts it was dr. Domes domeoid robots from tmnt #15 dr. Dome and the justice force issue that was a poster easter egg in the scrapped pre production end credit scene where april and Danny pitch a ninja turtles comic, Kevin eastman cameos as a trash collector casey hijacked to knock the foot off the fire escape and shredder lands in the back of the garbage truck.
The 1990s film grounded the tmnt way too much and should've stuck to the mirage comics and attempted the mousers with industrial light and magic and stan Winston studios repurposed ths the dinosaur sitcom suits for the triceratons
@@tyronleung5276 Yes, Professor Perry was going to be revealed as an Utrom in Secret of the Ooze (actually, that should be that his true identity as an Utrom WAS the secret of the ooze) but it was abandoned due to time and budget constraints...and us possibly mistaking him for Krang. As far as I'm aware that was supposed to be the black comic book version of Baxter in the best appearance that the film makers could possibly do for him (seriously, take another look, it's him sweater and all) considering how difficult the Mousers would have been to pull off in live action back then. The same thing goes for the Turtles In Space arch, the special effects technology that would have been needed for it just didn't exist back then, even practical effects would have been a stretch for the Triceratons and CGI wasn't advanced enough yet. They might be able to pull of a more comic book accurate live action production today (if any major movie studio could have the balls to give it a try), but it just couldn't be done back in 1990.

It's so funny because there was a time when I'd have said "If that first movie didn't work as well as it does, you don't have the empire that TMNT is today." But the thing about this moment in entertainment is that IP is so ubiquitous that if it hadn't worked in '90 you could *still* have gotten the Michael Bay treatment or Mutant Mayhem that just came out as some greedy, soulless studio looks to make a buck lol. Wow, I am now seeing a lot of the 2012 TMNT arcs were not original. I really though the space arc was crazy, but it seems that it was just following the comics.
The 1990 film was my childhood favourite, to this day I'm still hopefully waiting for an extended cut of the film. Due to the plenty of deleted scenes that I think should have been in the movie (however they did end up in the comic adaptation).

Just saw the new movie and this is still better. It has more powerful moments. It's one of the reasons why yes, I believe it IS the best comic book movie of the 90s. (But I also have it in my Top 10 comic book movies *ever* so I might be biased).
We need a mirage tmnt movie and video game with no nostalgic references to the 87 or 1990 film id like to see the characters the story lines and the all red mask look adapted into live action
If you'd like a more faithful adaptation of the Comic, look for the 2003 series. Taking the better bits of the 87 toon, but keeping the seriousness and storylines from the comics.
This is my favorite film. I just feel good after watching it. I wish the sequel followed it's original idea and had the doctor reveal he was an Utrom from Dimension-X.
I love this movie to death. I was born about 11 years after this, but I found this film in a Walmart clearance bin and it’s easily in my top 10 films ever. I think people can be a bit too harsh on later adaptations for not being like this, the 80s show, or the original comics, but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that there hasn’t been an adaptation that didn’t affect me the same way this did.

The sequel may not hold up nowadays, but it’s hard to say it was “less beloved” for kids at the time in the nineties. 10 year old me would have fought with you over the the sequel being just as good, if not better than the original. 2003 TMNT was awesome and my fav Turtles Forever is amazing homage to the past, present and future.
Nice, I was wondering if you guys were ever going to cover this one. You missed a few things though:
1. Baxter Stockman had a (very) brief cameo despite the changes made to the events of Mirage issue #2 and the absence of the Mousers. He can be seen walking past a storm drain with a bag of groceries just as Raph screams in rage as the turtles discover that Splinter is missing.
2. The part in the movie when the turtles are staying at April's apartment is borrowed from issue #3 with the only part that's missing being the high adrenaline police chase.
3. This is more of an Easter egg but we found out from NECA's replica ooze canister from the first movie that it originally said TCRI on the back (the part that we couldn't see in the movie...of course) and it was also originally made of metal. For some reason the canister was changed to glass with metal caps in Secret of the Ooze and the company initials were now TGRI.
Thanks for finally covering this 1990s childhood classic, it was a long time coming.
Thats a random elderly black dude Baxter wasn't in the 1990 film he was supposed to be a white washed composite of the white version that becomes a fly in the 87 cartoon, an utrom and revealed to be either professor perry who created the t.g.r.i mutagen in secret of the ooze or a cameo worker of the secret of the ooze, i dont believe that was baxter stockman cameoing as a guy walking past the storm drain as raphael screams crys out and whimpers,
The part of the turtles living with april is a composite of issue 3 issue 4 and leonardo micro series but it does not have the high speed Volkswagen mini bus chase sequence mistaken for a robbery that vehicle is reserved for the turtles leaving nyc after the silent partner scene and abandoning it on caseys farm house in Massachusetts it was dr. Domes domeoid robots from tmnt #15 dr. Dome and the justice force issue that was a poster easter egg in the scrapped pre production end credit scene where april and Danny pitch a ninja turtles comic, Kevin eastman cameos as a trash collector casey hijacked to knock the foot off the fire escape and shredder lands in the back of the garbage truck.
The 1990s film grounded the tmnt way too much and should've stuck to the mirage comics and attempted the mousers with industrial light and magic and stan Winston studios repurposed ths the dinosaur sitcom suits for the triceratons
@@tyronleung5276 Yes, Professor Perry was going to be revealed as an Utrom in Secret of the Ooze (actually, that should be that his true identity as an Utrom WAS the secret of the ooze) but it was abandoned due to time and budget constraints...and us possibly mistaking him for Krang. As far as I'm aware that was supposed to be the black comic book version of Baxter in the best appearance that the film makers could possibly do for him (seriously, take another look, it's him sweater and all) considering how difficult the Mousers would have been to pull off in live action back then. The same thing goes for the Turtles In Space arch, the special effects technology that would have been needed for it just didn't exist back then, even practical effects would have been a stretch for the Triceratons and CGI wasn't advanced enough yet. They might be able to pull of a more comic book accurate live action production today (if any major movie studio could have the balls to give it a try), but it just couldn't be done back in 1990.
As soon as I saw those robots my brain immediately went back to the 2003 cartoon.

FINALLY SOMEONE LISTENED TO ME!!! the creators of the movie literally used comic panels from the comics as the storyboard for the movie... making it the ONLY true "comic book movie" by default! Sin City also did this. so basically theres two comic book movies

I actually saw "TMNT II the secret of the ooze" first and got hooked.
It's so funny because there was a time when I'd have said "If that first movie didn't work as well as it does, you don't have the empire that TMNT is today."
But the thing about this moment in entertainment is that IP is so ubiquitous that if it hadn't worked in '90 you could *still* have gotten the Michael Bay treatment or Mutant Mayhem that just came out as some greedy, soulless studio looks to make a buck lol. Ah well. At least the original film is still the *Best* adaptation.

90s did a good adaption also.
Yet no blood no all red mask and it censors the adult themes of rape/ domestic violence and alcoholism

This movie is fantastic and holds up really well. My young daughter adores it and wants to watch it regularly.
Wow, I am now seeing a lot of the 2012 TMNT arcs were not original. I really though the space arc was crazy, but it seems that it was just following the comics.
That detail about it being Mikey on the roof blows my mind.

The 1990 film was my childhood favourite, to this day I'm still hopefully waiting for an extended cut of the film. Due to the plenty of deleted scenes that I think should have been in the movie (however they did end up in the comic adaptation).

9:02 I refuse to believe TMNT 2 isn't a beloved sequel( that's your opinion, not fact). Sure, it had to be toned down by parent groups, but it was still welcomed over its 3rd film!

Just saw the new movie and this is still better. It has more powerful moments. It's one of the reasons why yes, I believe it IS the best comic book movie of the 90s. (But I also have it in my Top 10 comic book movies *ever* so I might be biased).
We need a mirage tmnt movie and video game with no nostalgic references to the 87 or 1990 film id like to see the characters the story lines and the all red mask look adapted into live action

Jim Henson's criticism of the violence in the movie becomes funny once you look back at some of his earlier works (Wilkins and Wontkins)
If you'd like a more faithful adaptation of the Comic, look for the 2003 series. Taking the better bits of the 87 toon, but keeping the seriousness and storylines from the comics.
I grew up with the original TMNT cartoon but my favorite adaptation is the 2012 animated series.
The IDW comic run is my favorite so far

This live-action movie of the turtles is top-notched story-telling.

I wish the sequel followed it's original idea and had the doctor reveal he was an Utrom from Dimension-X.
I love this movie to death. I was born about 11 years after this, but I found this film in a Walmart clearance bin and it’s easily in my top 10 films ever. I think people can be a bit too harsh on later adaptations for not being like this, the 80s show, or the original comics, but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that there hasn’t been an adaptation that didn’t affect me the same way this did.

Interesting fact: The NES game pre-dates both the cartoon and the movie.
The sequel may not hold up nowadays, but it’s hard to say it was “less beloved” for kids at the time in the nineties. 10 year old me would have fought with you over the the sequel being just as good, if not better than the original. I think we could all agree the third movie was always less beloved however lol
