Anneke van Giersbergen, the second singer, was a fairly big influence on Floor Jansen wanting to become a singer in a metal band. Within Temptation have a really strong repertoire, and their lead singer, Sharon den Adel has a lovely voice. She was on a different version / year of Beste Zangers a year or two before Floor did the Dutch version.
No big thing but to be more accurate she was on the Belgian version of the show called "De liefde voor muziek" (For the love of music) in 2018. :-)

They are a Dutch symphonic metal band that started the same time as Nightwish 1996. They are considered one of the pioneers of female fronted symphonic metal bands. The lead vocalist is Sharon den Adel who founded the band together with her partner Robert Westerholt. She applied, and was admitted, to the conservatory for opera training but did not like it so she changed over to the arts-academy within her first semester. So apart from that short stay she is complete self-tough. There she studied clothing design and management and completed it successfully. She has mainly used these skills in designing outfits used on stage. They have had a rather successful run in clubs for couple of years where their performances were constantly sold out. Because of that they got invited to the biggest festival in the Netherlands "Pink Pop". Even though they had a very early start the concert was a huge success. They released their single "Ice Queen"shortly after expecting it to be very successful but it did not do much until somewhere in December that year a dj played it on the radio. Suddenly the song shot up in the charts and even took the number 1 spot. Now other countries started to pay attention.
Anneke van Giersbergen is quiet an inspiration to many artist in the genre. For example she inspired Floor Jansen to chose metal as her field of interst. If i am not mistaken Simone Simons (from Epica) said something similar. In one interview Tuomas Holopainen (the creative mind of Nightwish) also called her a source of inspiration. So she has quiet a lot to answer for. :-)

@@Rosannasfriend IMO she is a friend of Floor and Nightwish was a starting band. The Gatering starts in 1989 as Dead Metal band and change when Anneke joined the band. Pink Pop 1996 was epic and trendsetting.

@@Rosannasfriend Sure you can only be inspired by one person and one person only . It is scientifically impossibly to have more then one source of inspiration. I never said Anneke was her only or even the main source of inspiration. You do know however that Anneke had been active 1 years before Tarja right?. I am not saying Tarja was not a source, or even the main source, of inspiration to her like she was to many others. But Tarja is not the only vocalist in the world . If you think i have something against her then explain to me why i own all Tarja's solo albums. Most vocalist usually have list of people that they are inspired by.

@@Rosannasfriend Simone herself has said many times that she was inspired by multiple bands and singers. She does always mention Nightwish with at that time Tarja. But she chose a VERY different style than Tarja. Actually many of the great singers from her own country are a far greater influence. The Gathering with Anneke van Giersbergen, WithinTemptation with Sharon, After Forever with Floor. Before these bands she even loved to try and sing like Witney Houston and Mariah Carey. She also mentioned Disney songs as a huge source of inspiration! And I must say her rendition of Part of your World from the Little Mermaid is simply beautiful. Simone looks and sounds like a real life Disney princess anyway!

Anneke is an absolute legend, will always be my favorite from that scene and she was so influential on the other singers after her from the same scene like floor and Sharon and a bunch of others.

@@IllustriousCrocoduck Agua de Anique actually, that opened for smashing pumpkins on iirc the Zeitgeist tour in the NL. Fell in love with Anneke after the Gathering's 1997 Pinkpop show, and never really recovered. Sharon popped up to sing this on Anneke's 25y anniversary performances two years ago.
You'd love this whole show. Highlights imo are Mother Earth, The Truth Beneath the Rose, and Our Solemn Hour.
This. This was the highlight. It starts off sounding like Sharon is just doodling a few notes while she's waiting for the song to turn up, and ends up with - as is rightly titled elsewhere on RUclips, The Best Duet Ever. If you don't fall in love with both ladies, and even the band come to that after this, the blood has ceased flowing in your veins.
Within Temptation is an awesome band whose stellar front-woman and songwriting have set them apart from most of their peers. However, I hope you also give attention to their guest, Anneke van Giersbergen, an amazing vocalist and live performer who goes from ethereal to steely powerful without losing the smile. You've heard her voice already, on the backing track of Devin Townsend's Kingdom. As a contrast to "Somewhere", check out this powerful cover of another DT song Anneke did with Gentle Storm, (ruclips.net/video/4u3vrKQrngQ/видео.html) backed by Marcela Bovio, another great voice.

Anneke is fuckin awesome, a lot of great singers from that music scene but she is definitely my favorite of them all, really talented musician in general not just singing too.
I do love within Temptation, saw then live in 2006 and even got to meet them back stage. Sharon Den adele (lead singer or within Temptation and lady in white) is so lovely and short. Like 5ft.
Edit: the guest singer (lady in black) is Anneke van Giersbergen who is incredible. She sings with a band called the Gathering
Pretty sure Sharon is 5-6 or 5-7; she's not much shorter than myself. it's just the rest of the band are 6' tall Dutchmen

Such a great collaboration between two of my favorite Dutch legends. And the Black Symphony is just fantastic.
Sharon (lady in white) had been ill a few days before this concert and lost her voice. This concert was nearly cancelled. Luckily it recovered but not fully. Sharon isn't even classically trained. I love this song x
Good job on the dutch metal front woman, you already knew Floor but these two are also really amazingly talented! Sharon (in white) never had any vocal training I believe, it is all self learning
That whole concert was amazing ( was there ), but this song made it perfect for me.
Yet another pair of Dutch singing queens. Also, I would recommend you check out Dianne Van Giersbergen. She used to be in a band called Xandria, now in Ex Libris.
On the studio version, Sharon sings both parts. She has said this is now her favourite version. Her voice often gets described as flute-like

I have seen them both live and they are so good. At one time I've even seen Within Temptation and Floor Jansen her old band live on the same evening. Magical.

Most don't notice that they switch, impressive! And Sharon (in white) was kinda flu-ish that day, hence the mic close to her mouth and more breathy singing. Anneke van Giersbergen also did do a few songs with the Devin Townsend project. This was a amazing concert, I loved the song with Keith (now mina) Maputo also (what have you done now)

And I'm only listing those who are presently active. So, what the hell are you saying? Preference for one or the other depends solely on my taste and the piece they play, apparently so does yours.
And to make it more clear, I truly hate the nasal sound in Valley of the Queens. Others find that same piece 'Stellar Performance', safe to say I'm not one of those.
Yes great combo!!! Within temptation (white dress)is great and anneke as very good songs solo, she was singer by the gathering in the early days.
While this is a personal favorite and pure magic, people should really react to "The Promise" from the same concert instead to get the full range of Sharon's vocals.

Mr_Apropos I see what you did there... Even though the fact remains that most of the truly great female vocalists in this genre come from this small country. It really is quite bizarre actually. As a Dutch person I am proud of our singers and also quite happy that Tarja is not Dutch btw!!! Not a big fan of her voice and vocal style... Finland can keep her :)

Your spot on analysis of the vocal was the first like this I have heard. This is an amazing duet by a couple women in there mid 40's that keep getting better every year. The guest singer is Anneke Van Giersburgen. She was the lead singer for The Gathering in the 9o's and inspired Floor Jansen to sing metal. Nice analysis. Tbh Even after a few listens I didn't pick up on them changing to the other's tone so that was a good catch. One bugbear I have with this had nothing to do with your overall analysis but the scene that came to your mind was from Final Fantasy X-2 not Final Fantasy XIII-2 but that's me revealing the jrpg nerd I am so I shouldn't be that annoyed really.
