  • I was lucky enough to get a visit to Myrtle Beach the final year, just a few weeks before they closed, to ride their excellent Haunted Hotel. Here are two different ride throughs. The second one uses the camera light some so you can see a lot more. They both catch some different stunts.

    I remember this like it was yesterday. Dumbest thing Myrtle Beach ever done was getting rid of The Pavilion. Now it's just an empty grassy field but I still see The Pavilion when I ride by.

      Unfortunately private businesses reserve the right to close their business if they want. In this case it wasn’t a complete loss, some of the rides live on at the new Pavilion Park. But the larger rides like the log flume, hurricane, and haunted hotel were lost.

      It always sucks when a longtime amusement park closes. And a classic dark ride as well. And the pirate gun one that moved from
      Broadway at the Beach. What ever happened to that? Treasure Hunt. In July 2006 we went up to Ontario, Canada and to the haunted attractions at Niagara Falls. That was the last year of the Pavilion. But, MB is about 600 miles south of us. We have gone to closer beach towns with amusement parks/piers like Wildwood, NJ and Ocean City, MD. I never went to Myrtle Beach but my late grandmother (my mom’s mom) went there around 1991. She passed away from melanoma January 2006. Her husband from colon cancer Dec 2000. Does anyone remember Leonard Pickel’s Mayhem Manor walk through haunted house that was on the block north of the Pavilion in the 90’s? They have Nightmare Haunted House, Ripley’s Haunted Adventure, and an alien one now though. And Family Kingdom park is still there.

    Wow, this is such a wonderful memory. This was my favorite ride at The Pavilion. I still can't believe The Pavilion is gone. I was only 5 years old when I rode this for the first time, and I LOVED it! Begged my mom to go back the next day and ride it again with me since my dad took me the first time. I love Myrtle Beach and miss The Pavilion so much.

    I’m so disappointed to hear that the pavilion, and more specifically this ride, are no longer in existence. I used to ride this ride over and over and over. I once met a girl at the pavilion and she and I rode it so many times together and she would hold my hand and scream and cuddle up on me. I felt pretty awesome as a 14 yr old. Rest in peace haunted hotel.

    I remember going in it and the times I did, It had a musky smell to it. I guess that's what added to the thrill factor, that smell it had once you entered the double doors at first. I remember up on the balcony just before you got to the bookcase, there'd be a wheel chair that would appear to be rolling itself up there. Each time / summer I went thru it, It did freak me out. lol I never went thru it when it was Haunted Inn, just Haunted Hotel, though, I've got it on an old late 80's VHS tape when it was Inn before they changed it to Hotel.

      I would give ANYTHING to see that footage! You can't even find pictures of the witch on the balcony that came between the Inn and the Hotel with the bellhop. I remember living in fear of this ride after my first experience when I was very small. By the time I rode it again, it was different. So your video could very well answer some lifelong questions for me!

    Thanks to you I can show my kid a ride he'll never get the chance to experience. I've been to the biggest and best theme parks, but none of them touch the love I have and will always have for the Myrtle Beach Pavillion. It was the first park I went to that had bigger rides as a kid, and though I was too small for those on that first trip, seeing them in action that night, the park around lit up like a Christmas tree, awoke a wonder in me that nothing else has ever touched. All I ever wanted was to share this place with my kid, but he and I were robbed of that chance due to sheer stupidity. The videos don't do this place justice. Nothing will ever capture the feeling of actually being there, the atmosphere more than anything else. It was a truly special place, and it's a travesty that they got rid of it.

    I bet it was 1995 or 1996 but I remember writing this thing and me and my family made a home video of it as well I wish I knew where that tape was. I don't know why I never forgot about this thing but I never did. This day and I am a horror movie enthusiast so I wonder if this had anything to do with that. I don't have any memory of it other than the animatronic itself when I was physically at the attraction, and our home video of it. Don't remember riding the right itself but something about it is always stayed with me. Thanks for posting this

  • @robkrasinski6217

    In the hallway with the bed and creepy characters was that an incline? Because then there was a right turn and then a railing to the right overlooking the area where the fireplace was with heads on the wall. So there was definitely an incline up after the hallway of doors. So there were 2 inclines going up to the highest point? First incline was up to the fireplace level.

      THe other dark ride from the Pavilion was at one time out at Broadway at the Beach, I believe. Not sure if it still is or not.

    • @robkrasinski6217
      @robkrasinski6217 6 лет назад

      Why did they relocate it to the Pavilion from Broadway at the Beach (Treasure Hunt) if they were considering closing the Pavilion at that time and relocating rides to Broadway? Didn't make sense. They could have kept it at Broadway. Haunted Hotel they could have saved the track, cars, and props and built a new building or hired Sally to build them a new dark ride at Broadway. Even if they saved just the props from the hotel they could have ordered new cars and track from Sally and make a new haunted ride.

    • @HawgGnarlyDude
      @HawgGnarlyDude  6 лет назад

      Did some researching. Apparently, it was the other way around. The ride opened at Broadway at the Beach as Den Of Lost Thieves. Then was moved to the Pavilion at some point. Sally's website lists the DoLT installations, and BatB is on there.

    • @robkrasinski6217
      @robkrasinski6217 6 лет назад

      That's what I meant. Why did they move it to the Pavilion if it was doomed anyway? If they would have kept it at Broadway it might have survived. What happened to it anyway? Is it in storage awaiting a new home or buyer? And why did they sell off the hotel cars as trailers for motorcycles? They could have sold them to a park that has a ride with similar cars. Like Waldameer, for example.

    • @HawgGnarlyDude
      @HawgGnarlyDude  6 лет назад

      No idea. I've got to assume it had the fate of most of the Pavilion...

    • @robkrasinski6217
      @robkrasinski6217 6 лет назад

      Because they decided all of a sudden that the park in its old location was unprofitable and made a decision to close it and relocate some of the rides to a new location a few miles away at Broadway at the Beach. Unfortunately, the larger rides that couldn't easily be moved were scrapped on site.

      I'm a theme park junkie. I was at the Pavilion a few weeks before it closed for good. The destruction of the Pavilion was a pretty big deal. Still looked upon as a very stupid move, since it is still just a huge grass spot and a zipline in an ULTRA PRIME location. Right up there with Astroworld's destruction.
      I thought some of the Treasure Hunt animatronics (the other Pavilion dark ride, a very short Sally shooting ride) were moved to Broadway on the Beach, but I don't know for sure.

      That makes me sick that parks just get rid of their classic dark rides like they were trash. We only have so many left of the Bill Tracy ones and this one was made by Funni Frite in 1978. Funni Frite was from Ohio and went out of business in 2000. Leonard Pickel did the renovation into Hotel in 1992, and Sally added animatronics later on. Ocean City, MD and Rehoboth Beach, DE both have classic dark rides, Haunted House built 1964 by Bill Tracy in OC, MD, and Haunted Mansion built 1978 by Jim Melonic (successor to Bill Tracy) in Rehoboth Beach. OC, MD also has a Bill Tracy Pirate's Cove walkthrough built 1971 in Trimper's Rides.
