      Yeah I think it's important to know your way around as many platforms as possible, they all have different strengths and I think Redshift has a lot of (unfulfilled, yet) potential since it's owned by Maxon. So I was just curious to finally see what it can do. Octane is still king tho.

      That's wild, Octane is better in almost every way. But Redshift comes with the full Maxon pack so I guess it makes sense to work with it. That's why I started to mess with it because I already had it installed so I figured I should give it a go.

    • @bloohaus8670
      @bloohaus8670 Год назад

      @@NewPlastic Its mainly that, its in every studio. A lot of freelance clients come with a half backed redshift idea and want to keep it within that pipeline, not for any reason other than thats what it started in... I think Redshift is just pushed by maxon. I don't know if one is better!

  • @motherwit.2652
    @motherwit.2652 Год назад +3

    I've been an octane user forever... but I've been considering switching. What do you think some of the pros and cons to both? You're the best man. Thanks for your work.

    • @NewPlastic
      @NewPlastic  Год назад +1

      I might do a video about it when I wrap my head around it, but the biggest pro RS has is that it's owned by Maxon and has a huge potential in its growth. For me personally, crashing doesn't really happen with RS probably because of better integration with C4D. But another reason why Octane crashes more might be due to the way Octane uses the GPU, maybe pushing it way harder than RS. That results in Octane rendering faster, but crashing more often. If I had to choose one, I'll take rendering faster over crashing less.
      So Octane renders faster, has a MUCH better sampling system (RS is just so confusing, and full of options you just don't need), and has a much much more robust node system.
      I think RS has a quicker responding micro-displacement mechanism which is fun, Octane can take forever once you deal with heavy micro-displacements, but it just looks so goddamn good.

    • @motherwit.2652
      @motherwit.2652 Год назад

      @@NewPlastic always coming in with thoughtful answers. Thanks man! I totally agree. VBD's in octane... crash juice. But it's speed when working in production is so hard to beat.

    had to switch from Octane to Redshift but I totally love your work, please do more Redshift stuff there are way too less good redshift material tutorials!!

    • @NewPlastic
      @NewPlastic  Год назад +1

      Well, there's a reason for that. Redshift is pretty weak when it comes to pushing the node system, compared to Octane. And since Redshift is slower than Octane, the slower response time for render updates when you mess around with the node system is seriously exhausting, so it's hard to just keep exploring. But yeah I'm getting more and more into Redshift and will share what I learn.

    • @felixbaker3160
      @felixbaker3160 Год назад

      @@NewPlastic yeah, I totally agree with that, had been working with Octane since day one and I really miss it, besides the obvious there are so many little things that really give me a hard time working with redshift, don't know why so many studios use it. But especially because of its problems I would love to see how to get the best out of it! (mainly because I just have to use it..)

    • @NewPlastic
      @NewPlastic  Год назад +1

      Managing colors would be just carefully adjusting the IOR values for each channel.
      For alloys, what I do is I look at what metals the alloy consists of, looking up their IOR values, and take creative control over how I mix them together.

    What a great in-depth tutorial. If I may ask a quick question - when I use UV Projection node, the Bump Map does not recognize it. So, while the isolated Color Layer shows all of my various noises, the actual surface of the material is smooth. Any ideas? Thank you!

    • @NewPlastic
      @NewPlastic  Год назад +1

      Hmm. Are you sure you using a Bump node between the bump noise and the bump channel? Is it turned on high enough to show the bump?

    • @nicolebarreras9921
      @nicolebarreras9921 Год назад

      @@NewPlastic Hey, thank you for the response! Yes, everything works fine if I remove the UV projection node, but as soon as I put that between the noise (or the ramp) and the color layer, the object loses its bump. It's odd, because if the color layer is isolated, you do see the way it is meant to look. Not sure if I'm missing a checkmark somewhere, or do I need the RS object tag?

    • @rafaelfxdiz
      @rafaelfxdiz 3 месяца назад

      It didn’t work for me either. But I found a solution, you can youse 2 bump nodes and bump blender. So in the 1st bump node you should to use Height Field in Input Map Type and in the other bump map use Tangent-Space Normal. Then blend these two bump maps and it should show up. Use the same color layer for both of them.

      If you're doing a glass-like material with refraction I've found that Octane actually has some easier ways to tweak the level of refraction in a predictable way. RS seems to have major color shifts the more you try to art direct the refraction. There's a few good tutorials on youtube that cover glass refraction that will probably get you pretty close though. The rest of it is lighting and building your mesh so it displays impoerfections/etc. correctly.

      The wavelength is fixed, what changes are the N and K numbers. The gold N and K numbers for 0.65 wavelength are different than the aluminum N and K numbers for 0.65 wavelength, and that difference is what dictates the different reflection "color".
