    Great toy and great show! Will definitely be making this for my grandson. The wonderful thing about toys like this is it opens the child’s eyes to what can come out of the workshop and hopefully sparks an interest in making things. Thank you Kenny!

      I couldn't agree more Jim. There seems to be a lack in the newest generations for anything that requires manual labour or a thought process. Everything has to be instant and everything has to be store bought. Here's hoping that through toy making and other woodworking project, we can inspire a new generation to take up the hobby. If not, we will be the last generations of woodworkers and I fear the craft will disappear. Thanks for tuning in Jim. It's appreciated.

    a good point to say where safety mask, some 50 years ago my woodwork teacher always said remove as much waste wood before starting to turn, times have changed, it does not change the fact it was a good project

      I normally at least knock the corners off to avoid extra wear and tear on the chisels and to avoid the piece exploding on the lathe. With or without knocking the corners off, a face shield is a MUST. Thanks for tuning in Keith.

    That's neat Kenny!!! I made some many years ago. I based mine off of one I saw at The Cracker Barrel restaurant. I don't know if y'all have one up there or not. It is a restaurant with a old timey country store. I'm sure your granddaughter will love it.

    Absolutely brilliant 👍... I was wondering (to simplify things) if this would work ... the handle as just a stick with a vertical hole in it for the shaft of the top, the shaft of the top goes up through the hole and the string is wound onto the top of the shaft.
    For those without a wood lathe, you could use a pillar drill to spin the wood and sand it or make a few discs (of varying sizes) out of thinner sheet and glue them together ... you could make the shaft stick out one end and have that as the point of the tops shaft.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  Год назад

      I'm sure that this method would work Barry. There is always more than one way to complete a project and a lathe is definitely not a requirement for this project. It's just the method that I chose. Thanks for tuning in and for chiming in with an excellent alternative to those who do not have a wood turning lathe.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  Год назад

      My granddaughter (for some unknown reason) won't let it spin down until the end. She likes to grab it up from the floor before it finishes. So I just went out and spun the top and timed it. The top spun for a total of 1 minute and 29 seconds before it toppled over. It's got some great spin and that spin could be increase with a little longer pull string. Thanks for tuning in to the show Randy and for taking the time to leave your comment. It's appreciated.

    Hi Kenny, great idea and very well presented. I watch all of your shows, and often make the items for my grandchildren.
    I do have one safety concern, and that is that you used a SPINDLE ROUGHING GOUGE to rough down the CROSS GRAIN BLANK.
    This is dangerous because 1) the tang is too weak if it dug into the end grain. and 2) as we could see, there was a fault in the blank which was not obvious on initial inspection, and if you had mounted the blank from the other side, it would have almost certainly have picked up the crack, causing a catastrophic catch which would have been extremely dangerous. a much better tool to use would have been a Bowl Gouge, which is designed for this job.
    Yes I did enjoy the show, but am worried that you have shown a very dangerous thing, and I have looked to you and other people on RUclips who talk safety to know these things. please do not take this the wrong way it is meant in the nicest possible way to assist you in future to show the correct way to use turning tools.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  Год назад

      Well, I'm a little confused here Roger as I have always been told that the roughing gouge was the tool to use when rough turning any blank to round. I have never been told of a difference between rough turning a cross grain blank or a spindle blank and have always been under the impression that the same roughing gouge was used for both, regardless of grain orientation. My turning skills are considered "novice" at best and I have never really had any "formal" instruction (which is something that I would LOVE to get some day) so I don't do many turning videos on the show. I have always stated that my methods are "unorthodox" to the seasoned turners and that there is most likely a better way to do them. Now that you have mentioned this, I will have to look further into it to try and improve my turning skills and do it safely. Thanks for tuning in to the show and for taking the time to chime in with your advice on chisel selection. I truly appreciate it

      @@acutabove_woodworkings Hi again Kenny, I was not meaning anything other than to help you to understand the dangers.
      I am in Australia, and was taught Turning by Richard Raffan, who has a RUclips channel also, but made a living as a professional Turner and teacher. One of the first things that he taught me was that a Spindle Roughing Gouge is only for spindle turning. I have been turning for about 20 years also and have heard the stories of disasters from the incorrect use of a Spindle Roughing Gouge.
      As a reference, I will suggest that you watch a RUclipsr who uses the name Wortheffort and has a Video called "Four Cuts - A Wood Turning Basics Lesson. From about the 30 Minute mark he explains how the Spindle Roughing Gouge works. It is a long Video, so this is only about 15 minutes. The whole video goes over an hour, but explains how the wood reacts with the tools. I found it useful even though I had been taught the same thing by Richard many years ago. As I said, I am only trying to help you keep people safe also.
      Keep the shows going, I enjoy and in my old age am doing more Scrolling than turning due to health and really enjoy your ideas and the way you present them, please keep up the work. Cheers, Roger.
