He (and Oasis/Beady Eye/High Flying Birds) has always been fundamentally a pop/rock artist (heck! his genre is known as BritPOP!). Writing catchy hooks is his specialty. In that regard, this track is a great pop rock track (much better than the garbage that passes for pop music these days). It's also worth mentioning that bands typically showcase the poppiest track as the first single from their new albums, so it's way too early to be passing judgement on the whole album (the rest of the album could be completely different). Pop music isn't always bad people! Let us not forget that rock music was considered THE pop music not too long ago.

Modern pop is more like over-produced bubblegum tracks with tons of over-used looping synths and empty lyrics (with more of the focus on how the artists looks as opposed to the actual music). Pop music used to be a genre that could hold its head high so it's sad to see what has become of it these days. On a side note, I could never get into Arcade Fire (I feel they just use tons of unconventional instruments because it seems "interesting" and different, not because it adds anything to their music)
