- I play electric guitar trough an original Roland Space Echo RE-201 Tape echo unit from 1978 or 1986 according to the serial number. This effect is an amazing time machine and it packs so many classic tones and vibes, for instance Nile Rodgers CHIC, Led Zeppelin, Link Wray and U2. I playing a Telecaster through the Space echo into a Pure Tone Amps Offset (Marshall JTM45 Style amp) through a 1971 Marshall 4x12 model 1960A. Close mic Unidyne IV 548 and room mic Beyerdynamic M160.
My favorite effect. This puts me in the zone to play solo's I otherwise would not play.
I had a pair of those that I ran as part of the house system in the 70s; one for vocals and the other for instruments. What an incredible sound! A few years later when digital 'hit the scene', I ran it in conjunction with the Space Echos. The digital on vocals and the Rolands on instruments. Wow! What a combination! Absolutely incredible sounds ...and the crowds went CRAZY!!
Fantastic array of great sounds and effects from this unit. Not only did they sound good, but I always liked the way Roland products looked.
I bought one of these because of Radiohead. Got it from a dude on Reverb that arrived in questionable condition. Decided to just keep it and skip all that hassle. I had it serviced by my friend of Mercury Repairs in LA and my god, this thing is unreal. He brought it back from the brink of death. If you are in the Los Angeles area, I can not recommend him enough. Dude takes repairing old gear and turns it into an art. He seriously knows his stuff.
Also sweet video Johan but you already knew that. Some sweet ass tones. Cheers!
Hi Eddy, Can you post a phone number or address please? I can't find anything about Mercury Repairs on google. Just ads for mercury insurance. Lol! Thanks
Glad you like it? Eddy! Cheers
No One look up mercury repairs on Instagram! That’s where you’ll find his info. Look up his band called Electric Looking Glass here on RUclips as well, they’re really good! Their song Death of a Season is my favorite from them. Cheers, have a good one 😄
@@eddyquintero8622 ok, thanks!
I've said it before and I'll say it again.... I REALLY REALLY APPRECIATE the "gut" shots...
I never even knew how the Space Echo opened,
(ain't never even been in the same room with one, much less used it...)
That wuz very cool Johan ...thanx
Thanks Jonny, glad to hear it!
The space echo and gain , is just heaven.
It sounds so good, I can barely contain myself. I want one so bad.
Cheers Roy! Glad to hear it
If your interested in a tape echo with out the hassle's of an old unit Fulltone makes great repros of the old ones Most of the pros use his stuff for the reliability of them
@@paulcowart3174 Yeah but I've dealt with Mike Fuller, and he's... different. I won't do business with him.
I immediately looked on eBay , they are going for £700 - £850 😭
Get urself a Boss RV 500, does the space echo stuff and a hole bunch cheaper
What a magical effect tape Echo Is, It delivers a whole different palette to the sound, It brings you in another dimensioni! Cheers Johan!
Cheers Vincenzo!
Man the Space Echo is definitely something special. I love the sounds Radiohead got out of it on Subterranean Homesick Alien off OK Computer. I just love old vintage tape!
I cannot recommend more this machine.. Absolutely addictive and impossible to stop using :) Fantastic video dear Johan! :)
Thanks my friend!
Wow !!!! Tool , Floyd , U2 , Zeppelin , Smith's , Wray , Black Keys , all within 20 seconds ! Impressive as ever sir 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Rob, glad to hear that!
Countless Classic Sounds Indeed!
Well done and thanks for sharing this Great Effects Gear!
Be Well Johan!
Be Well All!
Thanks my friend!
Excellent toy Johan. 1 of the many times it was used greatly.....KKDowning....The Sinner...Judas Priest....Unleashed in the East. Thank you and cheers Johan.
Cheers Nicholas!
Thank you for this--very cool, even an homage to Link Ray, wow.
Thanks!
these were great, they sold well when I worked at the music store. Never owned one, but I did have an Echoplex EP4 for a little while, in my opinion the Space Echo is MUCH better. This unit you are demoing just sounds amazing still, thanks for the info and great riffs, Johan, be safe!
Thanks Mark! Glad you like them!
Tremendous gear in the hands of a tremendous player. I thought I heard you demo each of the guitarists you mentioned. Plus, I thought I heard a little "listen like thieves" riff from INXS. Awesome video!
Thanks, that’s kind of you! Cheers
I have an RE-301 and an RE-200 which is black and silver. They both sound fantastic... and surprisingly pretty different from each other tone wise.
My 301 sounds like this demo and has the added feature of the CE-1 chorus circuit that can be switched on or off of course. Very cool units.
Thanks for the video Johan. You always make vintage gear sound the way it should!! (Which is sometimes hard to do.)
Thanks, that’s a very nice compliment! Cheers!
Great video . I got mine in 1982 used for $150 for the PA system and the spring reverb was easy fix .
Thanks, glad to hear that!
@@JohanSegeborn ruclips.net/video/EU0TUR-o6gE/видео.html
Very trippy with a ton of settings. Fun to play around with I'm sure. God bless and rock on 😎🎸👍
Rock on J!
Such an inspiring unit. Makes you play and play and play and almost everything you play with it sounds good
Yeah it really pulls the riffs out of you
Awesome strap! Ace rules!
He does indeed!
You guys should do a collaboration video !
I've never had the pleasure to try one of these, but would love to some day.
Tape echo is my favorite type of delay for clean and low to mid gain sounds.
As you say Johan, it just adds so much to the tone!
And this unit is just the epitome of Tape Echoes
One of my favorite effects of all time!
BEAUTIFUL !
For now, i will have to use my Boss RE-20, and just dream of this unit.
Thanks :-)
The Mars Volta maked me buy one years ago 💓
Let's not forget BRIAN SETZER
Or Radiohead!!
Absolutely stellar. Cheers
One of the coolest pieces of gear. Period. My favorite is the "helicopter" My buddy bought one back in the 90's. We would spends hours just messin' with the dials
I could play all day with that. Love it :-)
Cheers William!
Some great dynamics in your playing here Johan. You always play mindfully for the sum of the parts making your clips equally interesting and always inspiring. A great reminder or lesson in attitude to listen and respond playing the gear as well as the guitar. Some of your dynamics here are like several of the range of passages from 'The Who Live At Leeds.' Thanks for your consistently great work and be safe sir.
Great riffs!
Thanks, glad to hear that!
I plug mine into my little marshall lead 12 for a massive practice rig..Awesome Johan!
Thanks :-)
Finally, something I already own!
Superb. Thank you.
Alex Lifeson used these from 1978 until at least 1981 (Hemispheres thru Exit..Stage Left). He later recalled they were hard to maintain, and that he preferred the Echoplex (which he used before 1978).
Stewart Copeland also used one for his drums on the Reggatta de Blanc album, most notably on “Walking on the Moon”.
I never knew how nice it could sound
Thanks man
The way you had the repeats modulating... amazing
Yeah it sounded like a chorus
I just love every clip I hear of the Space Echo. Makes me want to run out and buy the RE-20 just for a hint of the magic. Thanks to you and Simon for sharing this.
Glad to hear it!
Love these!! Thanks for sharing this with us Johan. You always do great things with tape echos! If you ever run across a unit by Echo Fix, it's a modern and ruggedized version of the RE201. It's on my someday list.... :-D
Thanks Andy! I’ll keep an eye out for Echo Fix.
I used one in the 80s with my 12-String Rickenbacker. It was the only effect I used. The preamp was amazing. It’s different than the Echoplex. It’s almost somewhere between an Echoplex and Echorec. 🔊🤠👍
nice effect.great demo from the king.
Thanks!
Man i really want that thing
4:15 everyone always concentrates on Marshall's distortion tone, but they have the best clean sound as well!
This is actually a Pure Tone Amp but it’s a JTM45 amp
Hi, Johan!
Sorry, I was online with one significant journal. I am on the welfare, but I am still on my way;-)
This is very nice effect! Pink Floyd reminder!👍 With some Cure and U2 sound too! Analog stuff rools with A/T..... caster and Rolland - what can be better? Amazing!
See you,
Zigfrid
Thanks man!
On my particular re201 I find that running a buffer in front of it really takes the blanket off. Without it still sounds good but just dark. The best buffer I have found is one with a jrc4558d chip in it.
Awesome for an old guy
Great demo Johan!!! Keep on rockin'!!!
Thanks, Rock on!
I own one.?.? The reverberation even works great. It's been put away for a long time. Thanks, I'm gunna go dig it out!😜
Congrats man! 🤣
Wow...if you don't like it...and it works...sell it to me. Useless old thing shouldn't take up space in your house...
So good! I'm so tired of digital junk! I love analog!
Great tones as usual Johan! Bought the Affinity because of your videos lol Now i'm always torned between my Les Paul or the Tele -_- first world problems!
I'm glad I bought mine in the '90's while they still were cheap and everyone else wanted digital dellays.
I'm also a very happy owner of Binson echorec, Watkins copicat, and an Echolette unit.
The Binson is my favourite. It has an extra rec head for long ethereal spacy echoes.
I love the space echo too, but there is some extra mojo in the tube units.
Next addition wil be an Echoplex and a Dynacord echocord S-65.
Those have some great preamps!
Yeah the preamps in some of these are classics
Which Binson model? The original with the rotating drum wire recorder?
@@NoOne-sn2si It's a model B1-S chassis rebuilt into a echorec2 T7E. It has the wired drum and tubes. This unit also has two rec-heads that are switchable between A/B or A+B. It sounds totally insane! The machine is a "one of a kind" version.
Has access to 5k+ Gibson les Paul's, "nah fuck it, affinity telecaster, tone is in the fingers (and boutique amps) maaaaaan!"
Yeah many Squier Teles of the mid 2010s were insane bangs for the buck. Cheers!
I love it!
Cheers Robert
Great piece Very cool putting it out there Oh well I don't care for reverb anyways so this might have a good price Good stuff 👍
Thanks Paul!
@@JohanSegeborn This is besides the point but after trying SO many new drive pedals I always come back to my Diaz Rangemaster clone and Analogman modded TS Even fuzz pedals I can't find a new ones that does it for Maybe cause I know a cranked amp is supreme to any pedal Could say that ignorance is bliss LoL I suppose 😂 Love the channel and your welcome
Alex Lifeson used one of these on most of Rush's albums before they went synth crazy.
Awesome effect!!!
3:48
Absolutely nailed some Keith Richards tones there!
Great demo Johan!
Thanks Lior!
Superb playing .....add some tracks to it...and you have a monster hits album...
thank you
I've wanted one of these for forever and they just keep getting more expensive and out of reach :(
Rock on Johan!
Rock on!
You're not missing much with the reverb lol. I bought one non-working for cheap in 2007. Fixed it up, used it a while, and sold it for maybe $600-700. Shoulda kept it, but I was a broke student at the time.
Setzer's machine !! i have just bought a copicat , these japanese ones are a bit expensive for me ! Good for Elvisy vocals too- I see Johan is using his special ''TCB'' strap here
aron hallam setzer uses 301s
The overdrive is of the roland space echo RE-201?
Magot Brain forever
Geez.. that Link Wray tone is identical to the recording.
Thanks Rafael!
You must be hearing impaired. 😆
Nice johan! Another great weapon to use...id be very interested in how this unit sounded on vocals. ??would u get that vintage saturation like the 70s??
Thanks Michael, it would certainly help
3:05 that's the shit
Thanks! :-)
Hi Johan another magical video. What was that sequence around minute 5:25? That was beautiful. On minute 6:26 the overdrivey powe-chords sounded like as if you were on ample field, some much clarity. See ya next friday. Cheers-ers-ers-rs-s
Thanks man, that was improvised. Cheers! :-)
@@JohanSegeborn Ok man, shows more of your improvs.
Thanks my friend
2:40 sounds like wes borland
Wow
Cheers Robert
There exist a digital remake of this one that is a great substitute if you cant find/afford the original. Boss RE-20 is it's name.
Yes, it nails the old sounds, that's what they used back then to produce those sounds. Tape echos was what we had, it was all we had. Digital equipment doesn't sound near as good. Why do you think they are producing vinyl records again. Why do you think old analog stereos are so sought after and expensive now. Why do you think digital amps are all trying to sound like analog tube amps. Analog rules.
There goes Johan again... I think he originally plays with a drum track ...see all the dancing ? ....for us he removes it ...look he does so even for slow pieces... Finally I figured it out! Right Johan ; ) ..?
Johan, how could I achieve some Tommy Bolin style echoplex wooshes?
Hi johan, why does it sound so different from 9:00 onwards? Seems like there is more high end content and it sounds good!! Was there some sort filtering before that? Amazing unit and demo, congratulations.
Thanks Alan! I use different blends of room and close mic throughout the clip
@@JohanSegeborn Oh I see, thank you for the response!
4:23 - sounded a little Depeche Mode-like. Very nice.
Glad to hear that! I love Depeche Mode
A magical device. I want it on the look factor alone. Is it the spring tank that's messed up? If so, I have one that I'd be happy to donate, if you'll help cover the shipping. It's a type 60 OC Electronics just like the original, and I don't need it
The only way to get the first comment is to post it two hours before the video goes up
LOL!
This man proves the guitar is surprisingly not as important if it is well made
Thanks man
Next maybe there's an EP-1 you can take for a drive... er, overdrive (?)
Johan, try to find a Binson Echorec. That would be awesome
That can be arranged I think
@@JohanSegeborn I trust you.
Used by Randy Rhoads also
I wish someone would demo the setting Rhoads used , he had a lot of distortion going on I wonder how he made it works
The RE-201 doesn't play particularly well with guitars, the Echoplex, and RE-501 seem to sound a lot better. I always feel that the RE-201 rolls off a lot of highs, it's great for synths, and drum machines though because of that. There are also some really nice Korg echoes that I would love to try.
E S I agree, but it helps a lot when you put a buffer in front of it.. Input impedance thing I think.
2:40 what song is this / is this inspired by? Anyone know?
That’s a combination between. Block rockin beat by chemical brothers and twilight zone by 2 Unlimited
@@JohanSegeborn Your riff was some great stuff!
Randy Rhoads! :D
Yeah it sounds like he’s using one on Diary of a madman
That echo and the amp and speakers really took that cheap lowlife guitar out of its misery as a POS and into stardom sound.
That’s actually my go to Tele
Johan Segeborn but if you add a fender logo on the headstock you will get smoother highs and more body to your mids.
Worked wonders for me with my Nash guitars 52 télé
Do you use a buffer before it?
Yeah, I use a Buffered Boss Tuner
🇬🇧ZEPPELIN ???????
What a classic effect. Used by many guitarist, but didn't Link Wray use tremolo?
Joe A yes
I have the Boss pedal version of this .,.. close but not quite as good as original .
What's the riff at 6:03??
Just improvised. Cheers
Rush
Your guitar is out of tune. 2:26.😮
