  • Ever wanted to learn how to make chains? These two easy chains are a great way to start! The Fly-Eye chain is a non-soldered chain and the loop-in-loop employs fusing fine or Argentium silvers. If you don't have either, I'll show you how to create links by soldering. Don't forget to check out my web page for more detailed info. Link below.
    Note: Purchase "dead soft" wire. Also, you don't HAVE to use round wire. Also, also, you can twist your wire before making links to make it textured. This is especially beautiful with square wire. Anneal after twisting and before making jump rings!
    I use an electric drill as the battery compartment on a cordless, gets in the way for holding in a vise. Of course, there are workarounds!

    I created a Google Doc with step-by-step directions and tons of information, charts and formulas for making chains.

    Oh,cthanks a lot, Nancy! I was playing Solitaire when your video came on and completely captured my attention causing me to ignore my game and let 120 seconds whiz by while I sat with phone in hand, a dumb look on my face and stared agog at the TV! LoL! I did win the: game, but at 4:59! Terrible! I'll put the phone down next time. 🤣🤣🤣

      HAHA! Sorry I (almost) ruined solitaire! Bad me! Hopefully, you'll make something amazing and hit that solitaire hard afterwards! You and my husband! I ask him what he's going to do if he ever retires from his biz and he's says play solitaire. Gheesh! Have fun and thanks. N

    Great tip for sawing jump rings using tape over the dowel. Also, never have seen the Fly-Eye technique before. Thanks for showing how this is done.

      I love the tape thing. I got so tired of jump rings flying everywhere, that it was a natural transition to tape the hell out of them. I'd never seen the fly-eyed chain before either. I like the look of it and that there's no soldering. Thank you!

    Being the lazy get that I am, I make jump rings on my dremel and make them into chains....I'm not suggesting that anyone copy my slovenly jewellery making practice but I discovered that if you can aquire an oval shaped rod...like a crochet hook or something else you shouldn't be sticking in yer dremel you can make oval ones too (jump rings for chains that is) I'm still not allowed to solder cuz the smoke detectors are hardwired and I am still in the black books about my hooligan cats. Which reminds me. ..do you want a cat or two?

    Dear Nancy,
    Thank you so much for your excellent videos!!! I learn a lot :-)
    I have a question - I understand you work with Argentium, I consider moving to Argentium because it has so many advantages such as no fire scale, no tarnish etc,
    Would you recommend using Argentium instead Silver Sterling? or there are specific works you recommend working with sterling?
    Thank you so much
    Your loyal subscriber
    Orly

    • @NancyHamiltonJewelry
      @NancyHamiltonJewelry  7 лет назад

      Thank you so much Orly Bug! I moved to Argentium from sterling. It is a personal decision for you to make. The only negative issue, that I have personally encountered, is that if Argentium is spread across two charcoal blocks (wide-ish gap), then heated, it will sag. Argentium solders and moves very much like sterling but, it is tarnish and fire stain resistant - which sterling is not. Strength is the same as for sterling, workability too. I would buy a little and play with it. You might just love it! Use Argentium solder. Thank you! Enjoy your adventure.

    Isn't it quicker to just cut the jump rings by hand with the flush cutters?

    • @NancyHamiltonJewelry
      @NancyHamiltonJewelry  7 лет назад +1

      For the fly-eye chain you can do that. With the fused chain you won't have a good connection as one end will be wedge shaped - from the cutters.

    • @pdelmercado
      @pdelmercado 7 лет назад

      Nancy Hamilton Oh, that's right. I forgot about the flush cutters creating one side that's not flush. Thank you!

    • @NancyHamiltonJewelry

      14 gauge? Thick. I found this PDF on recommended dowel sizes but, they don't mention a curb chain. link.springer.com/content/pdf/bbm%3A978-1-4684-9132-6%2F1.pdf. Plus, 14 isn't even on there. Rio has an article on Aspect-Ratio between dowel size and wire size. Perhaps that will help. Obviously, I don't know! Thanks. media1.riogrande.com/Content/Aspect-Ratio-Discussion-IS.pdf

      Thank you for the tutorial. I madly love the fly eye. Almost have a bracelet done. Thought I was going to lose my mind at the beginning lol I just started getting into exploring chains. So hard to find solid copper chain around these parts but also I like the feel of making my own. This one I am definately making in silver. A question. I've never oxidized a chain. Is it a doable process quality wise?

    Argentium Silver need as to be pickled same as Sterling Silver. Firescale from annealing is not the same as tarnish. Both get firescale after annealing.
    This video rambles on with very poor camera work cutting off what you are showing. Edit this and make it shorter and to the point.
