Also, for those who are unaware:
Waterbending: Tai-Chi
Earthbending: Hung Gar
Toph's Earthbending: Southern Praying Mantis
Firebending: Northern Shaolin
Airbending: Bagua
You're welcome.
thx
One question, what the style use Tenzin in fighting with Zakhir?
Weird but that makes sense! That also parodies the Northern Prejudices that existed before WW2 and even after to any of the southern styles utility back when the martial arts schools crushing used to be a matter of pride.
Looks like a mix of Bagua and Northern Shaolin
Thx
he is earthbending ^^ it really looks like it does on avatar the last airbender. beautiful!
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoy it. Hope you have the chance to study Kung Fu if you haven’t already done so.
That's what the developers modeled earthbending after. The other bendings were based on other martial art forms: T'ai Chi for water, Northern Shaolin for fire and Ba Gua for air
Yes you are correct. The Avatar series did a remarkable job sharing these respective Kung Fu styles to the world.
Kurtis Beifong
Litterally going to comment this lmao beat me to it
He's trying so hard to move the earth
You don´t undersand guys he did move the earth, entire earth, we are just to close to see the result.
Yes. I believe that when determining the look and feel of the Earth Bender's style for Avatar, The Last Airbender, Nickelodeon Animation and Sifu Kisu decided to use Hung Gar Kuen and the Chu Gar system as reference. Thanks for commenting QuestionYourSanity.
Honestly what i like about this form so much is that unlike a lot of other more flashy demo's this one you can see the power that comes through the stances. Each movement is precisely whats needed at the right time, he's never off balance
and nothing is wasted. Very awe-inspiring to watch. Two thumbs way up!!
+Peter Sobrino Thank you very much for your enthusiasm. You have a very keen eye and it is like I tell my students "It's not what you do, but how you do it." The same can be said of any Martial Art that is performed with proper time spent on foundation and proper mechanics. We will continue to work hard and are happy to have you on the Martial journey with us. :)
+tigercrane805 well said
+tigercrane805 great example of a classical system , and its origins represented in this video , tried and true traditional.
+tigercrane805 I think the stances are good I just think some of the arm movement is a bit exaggerated. I believe in keeping a close circle that way you can block virtually anything that comes your way.
I wonder how many of the kids are there because of avatar...
TheBlackDemon1996 Avatar and Legend of Korra have done a great job in promoting Traditional Kung Fu. Our friends, Sifu Kisu and Sifu Manuel Rodriguez were instrumental in the Martial Arts choreography of the show. If you haven't already done so, feel free to check our demo with them here on youtube. The title is: Legend of Korra | Avatar The Last Airbender | C 4 Central Coast Comic Con | Kung Fu Demo
tigercrane805 I live in the area and my favorite type of bending is earth and I'm very interested in classes. I already checked out the website too! :)
Fabio Sonda Sounds great Fabio. Feel free to contact us via the website if you'd like to stop by our studio some time.
tigercrane805 I really want to learn Hun Gar but I'm in Scotland and the only classes here are 3 hours away from me at 6pm.
TheBlackDemon1996 I'm sorry to hear Hung Gar is not so easily accessible to you. I do know some classmates who traveled from the Czech Republic to the United States to learn Hung Gar on several occasions over the years. It took them a while but, they worked hard and took the knowledge home with them and are now Masters in their own right. If you can make it to a nearby location a few times a year and train earnestly, I believe you could do the same. I wish you the best and if you're ever here in the United States, we would be happy to have you visit.
I need also to learn this Earthbending since I already mastered the Waterbending "Tai Chi", then so on and so forth, yeah!
I love how each time I see Tiger Crane it's always different, so many variations yet still solidly Hung Gar. Nice Fa Jing on this Sifu's part.
is that earthbending?
Najmi Hafiy Izzat Yes, Hung Gar Kung Fu is the style that the bulk of the Earthbending seen in “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and “The Legend of Korra” is based off of. However, the character Toph, specifically utilizes the style of Chu Gar Southern Praying Mantis as a reference to her Bending style. Thanks for your interest and commenting.
17th century. So I'm watching something 400 years old. That's amazing!
I am also a genuine kungfu learner in VietNam, seeing your discipline grow I feel very happy, today the quintessence has gradually been lost, only enthusiasts like us can help restore and Keep your identity intact!
Thanks for your video
Thank you very much! Much respect to you and your continued efforts!
Do you know how to Earthbend, i didn't see nobody moving rocks!! HAhahh just kidding, nice presentation!!
J. Martín Búzios Lol. Still working on the Earthbending skills. Thanks!
That's great to hear. Long Fist is a great form and sets up a strong foundation to progress in Kung Fu. Whether it is Hung Gar, Northern Praying Mantis, or any other style, what matters most is your relationship with your Sifu and the effort you put forth. I wish you much success and thank you kindly for your support. Take care!
Thanks junlong! Glad we both have the avenue of youtube to share the art of Hung Gar which to this day, still amazes and humbles me by its ingenuity! Let's keep sharing it with everyone!
Your comment about constant learning reminds me of what my former Sifu told me alomst 15 years ago. Kung Fu is a 'life time' not a 'past time'. I wish I still lived back home so I could have continues to work with him.
Excellent foot work, sifu. Great rendition. Love the form.
+Stephen Calvarese Thank you for your kind words. The choreography of the form is a treasure and I'm very happy you enjoyed my interpretation of it.
This was the style that set me on the path that lead to me losing all form and just riding the flow.
Thanks Stephen, glad to hear you're learning the form as well. It's one of our most celebrated sets of Kung Fu and is great for demonstrations. Hopefully once you've finished learning it and are comfortable, you can share with us your rendition of it? Take care and Happy New Year!
earth bending
+Fabio Sonda 狼 nope. Southern praying mantis is earthbending as told by creators of the show
mantis is one of the forms of earth bending.
+kael00tids Only Toph does that. Most earthbending is based on hung gar
but Toph does it is my point.
I practice tang soo do, kickboxing, and now working on hung gar! Demonstrations like this keep me inspired by hung gar... Very beautifully executed.
Luther Unleashed Thank you for your encouraging words. I appreciate your enthusiasm and wish you all the best in your training!
Yes, I believe when Nickelodeon and Sifu Kisu were determining the styles for Avatar, the Last Airbender series, they chose Hung Gar Kuen along with the Chu Gar Style as a reference for the look and feel of the Earthbending style.
i must say that this is the first time i have seen a humble attitude of both martial artists and non-martial artists. most of the time the comments are just people arguing over pointless things, not realizing that martial arts are fluid and are allowed to be adapted by individuals. my sensei always tells was to make our kata our own, because that is the only way we can learn otherwise we are just being copycats. nice form, and nice additudes from everyone
That's great Stephen. I'm glad to meet your acquaintance and to learn a little more about your Sifu. I am glad we all share the art of Hung Gar Kuen and look forward to seeing your rendition of the set when you are ready.
thank you for taking the time to answer me, humbleness is a rare thing now-a-days. i am glad that someone is out there who is good yet doesnt flaunt it. thank you for reminding me what martial arts are really about
You are welcome! I would love to share my rendition. This will take awhile though. After 2.5 years of practicing, I finally understand the importance of the basic horse stances. Now, I am practicing low horses to have a stronger foundation. Also, becoming more fluid by incorporating the whole body into the movement. Not just hands. I like to relearn what my sifu has taught me so far. This is why I like Chinese marital arts. There is always more to learn. Thanks again. Happy 2013 to you as well.
Thank you Krlos Oblivion. It's a pleasure to meet your acquaintance here on youtube. Yes, the variations of the form is a testament to the core principles of the system which unite us all. Glad to meet another member of the Hung Gar Kuen family.
all the bending styles from avatar and legend of korra are different styles of kung fu, so this is not surprising
Noooo
Waterbending was based off tai chi chaun hehe
They're all different forms of east-asian martial arts- Taekwondo= fire bending, Hung gar= earth bending, tai chi= water bending, and finally baguazhang= airbending.
@@keentan2896 Norther Shaolin is fire bending. The only Taekwondo was in the live action abomination (of which we do not speak) where the White boy pretending to be an actor pretending to cosplay as Aang was butchering bagua because all he knew was taekwondo.
for me the hung gar forms have always been a very powerful style , I always put emphasis on styles rooted in a firm stance , my foundation started with these two forms and over the years I found power and fluidity in the movements , true with all traditional forms , hung gar has proven to be well designed to be perfected with practice. still working on tai chi , which is a beautiful art and my second . the expression all styles stem from tai chi is quite true , I see the same foundation in the stances in tiger crane , though tai chi reminds me more of bag gua which I dont know it but I am familiar with it.
the traditional Chinese styles are time tested and well designed with a simple approach to theyre applications
that give you room to spend years perfecting the forms , ive always been a firm believer in developing fluid transitions in the form where it becomes second nature before moving to another system , like you said , so I agree with you , its how its used .
.
+Duan Torruellas Very well said. As our Grand Master, YC Wong has said "Kung Fu is like a book. It must be read (practiced) many times before the true meaning of it is understood. Thank you for your support and for your years as a practitioner of traditional Kung Fu.
Yes that is correct ShadnicThe. The Earth Bending style of Avatar: The Last Airbender is based off of the Hung Gar Kuen style of Kung Fu. Sifu Kisu did a magnificent job depicting the varied styles of Kung Fu in the animated series.
The reason this is happening inside on a wooden floor is so he doesn’t start chucking rocks all over the place
There's so much Toph in his moves
***** Thank you. Glad that you enjoyed the video.
+Paulina Jaworska (damntrevelyan) well, I think the idea was that they borrowed from Wong Fei Hung's martial art's to form Toph, Wong Fei Hung was from the south of china which is very much what the earth nation is based off of.
+Paulina Jaworska (damntrevelyan) For example, the horse back/ saddle stance, in Hung Gar Kung Fu is traditionally practiced for three hours, so you would hold that stance, (basically squating) for three hours. I can't do that. Toph can.
Toph was more southern mantis than tiger crane, king bumi (the old guy in the white lotus) was definitely done based on this. In fact, all of the earth nation except those that learned from the badger moles (toph) are based on this style
No, Toph's was the Southern Praying Mantis.
What a great form. I practice Hung Gar as well. My shifu is teaching me tiger crane now. I can't wait to have the grace as you do.
I am very appreciative for your words. This is something my shifu always says ... "low horses". I too am fortunate to have a good teacher. What inspires me the most is my teacher is always learning even though he has practiced Hung Gar for 30+ years. There is nothing like traditional Chinese marital arts.
Yes junlong, it is a demonstration version of the form shortened to show its highlights. I enjoy your videos as well. It's nice how you take the time to explain the forms you demonstrate. Thank you for sharing.
50 year Hung gar here.
He waswonderful to watch.
Much has changed since my day.
But the tigers spirit is unchanging.
Thank you for your kind words and much respect to your lengthy Hung Gar journey!
Yes, it is pretty amazing. What's even more amazing is the hard work and time that the Masters before me spent cataloguing and preserving these techniques so that we still have access to them today. I am very grateful to be able to pass it on in these modern times. Thanks blockmasterscott for commenting!
That was a beautiful form, great intention power & fluidness.
Some Hung Gar looks really stiff this was fluid well done 👏🤜🫷
Thank you very much. There are many different interpretations of Hung Gar. I’m glad you enjoyed my take on things.
I can see some moves used in Karate and it's obvious his flow is precise, quick but intentional, as it said in the beginning it's straight forward but with the elegeance and precition of the crane. The quick movements make it look like he's flailing his arms which is chaotic and random to an observer, but the true mastery behind it covers the true strength. Impressive finger movement and work with the hands and arms. His legs got a solid foundation but his practice in moving weight to one side shows here as he is able to both hold his stance strongly and yet flexible for moving in a coordinated move with his arms
Thank you very much for your observations and encouragement. Training these techniques is a big undertaking and to hear your appreciation is a treasure unto itself.
Okinawan Karate is derived from Shaolin Kung Fu. Five Ancestor Fist, Crane fist, Monk Fist boxing to name a few. GoJu Ryu, Shorin Ryu share many similarities to Hung Gar, because of these connections.
Sounds great Stephen. Yes, the stance work is the most important thing in Hung Gar Kuen and while it may be the first thing one learns, it's also the most advanced thing for it is the foundation that all is built upon. Often, as I progress through the years I find myself drawn back to the stances which I am constantly studying and improving.
The best gift a teacher can give to their student is a good foundation. And I am most fortunate to have that gift from my Teachers.
This is totally earth bending xD
Thank you, I enjoyed your videos as well. You display a very strong foundation and tremendous poise during the demonstration of your Kata.
Thank you SithV1.
Your kind words humble me. The form is a testament to the Hung Gar Kuen system and I am fortunate to be able to practice it.
Always a pleasure seeing people practice! Thank you. I trained in this style many years ago and enjoyed it.
You’re welcome! Glad you have experienced the style and enjoy it! Do you still train Martial Arts? If so what style? I hope you are doing well. Take care.
@@tigercranekf Yes, I still train in Baguazhang and Kuntao Silat. I call my own personal training Bagua Kuntao Silat. I still fondly think of my Hung Far training in the eighties.
i felt the earth moving while watching this
I like that; a teacher is a student ... Yes. His name is Pete Louie. Although he wouldn't consider himself a master, he would say that he is a weekend warrior. I respect his modesty. As a group, we only practice on the weekends. We are all weekend warriors in that respect. Sometimes I wish we had more time together, but I do value the time we spend learning the forms, the applications, and the philosophy of Hung Gar. Some days it is just Pete and I. Those days are the most invaluable.
Good stuff, dude. I used to practice this every night. Kicked ass.
Thank you. I deeply enjoy this form and am happy you enjoyed its practice.
Honestly Im here because I liked the kung fu style , especially in movies. Its such a beatiful style. Donnie yen's wuxia is so cool when he used the Hun Gar Kung fu fighting style.
Glad you enjoyed watching!
that was beautifully done, great demonstration. now I really want to learn hung gar
A real Martial artist. He is the legend.
Thank you very much.
WHat awesome form and technique. Love Demos like these.
Thank you very much. Glad that you enjoyed it. :)
_"Don't worry, I hear cowards float."_
Thank you. I am pleased to meet your acquaintance as well. My Sifu is a great person. I highly look up to him. I am hoping, once I learn tiger crane, I can perform it for Chinese New Year next year. I won't be ready to do the form this year though. In between that time frame, I should be comfortable in doing my rendition of the form. You said it the best, "live the tradition".
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoy the demonstration.
This is really cool!
Thank you!
Awesome Sifu!! I wanna learn kung fu!!!!
You should learn Kung Fu! If you want to learn online email us at: instructor@tigercrane.net
Yes, Cyclonus5. The beauty of Hung Gar and Martial Arts in general is that it is interpreted differently by each practitioner yet the underlying concepts remain the same. Thank you for your kind words and support.
I actually was impressed about how u explained in the beginning on the history and creator Hung Hei Goon, as well as great grandmasters in Wong Fei Hung and Lam Sam Wing. That was better than anything that I done thus far. I should be the one to thanks u for this awesome sharing. :-)
That really is very very good.
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed the demonstration.
This was the most hood c-step I've ever seen.
Alex De Los Reyes china step foo
This lit
Earthbending !
That form is very cool. Great demo.
Great form, great discipline.
Glad you liked it!
That was a very good performance. Haven't seen one that good in a while. salute!
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it.
loved it. Just ain't the same without the kung fu movie sound effects though LOL
Hmmm...maybe we should put out a remix video with all those sound effects. What do you think? LOL
Tiger Crane Kung Fu make it happen!!! That would be awesome!
Thank you for your kind words. Humility is very important in Martial Arts and is the one thing my Sifu, YC Wong values most. Before stance work, fighting, and performance, comes the development of one's character and humility is a pre-requisite on that path.
Imma gonna be the best earthbender after this video
awesome, I am currently a novice at Northern Mantis and we do very similar stances while practicing our form, but of course a different system. Salute from Texas, USA
+Alan Perez Great to hear. Northern Mantis is a great system and very effective when done correctly. Stances are the key to any real traditional Kung Fu style and it is what connects us. Very happy to be sharing the Kung Fu journey with you. Wishing you all the best!
Thanks for commenting Saofeng19. Actually the curvature of one's posture is done temporarily in a concave/convex fashion on purpose and is indicative of many Southern Kung Fu styles. In this instance you can see that my head doesn't drift forward but stays in alignment with my feet, thus not making unnecessary strain on the spine. There are many uses for this flexing of the back, it is occasionally referred to as swallow/spit in some systems as the motion in one direction leads to the other.
Very impressive performance.
Thank you very much.
Not stiff and has springiness in the punches which you dont see in a lot of hung ga people. Nice
You certainly have an eye for details. Your kinds words are appreciated. Thank you.
You are so good! :)
Alex Leonardi Thank you Alex.
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoy it.
Thanks for the kind words NotOrdinaryInGames. Do you study Martial Arts? If so, what style?
excellent hung gar form.
***** Thank you for your kind words.
I've seen it many times, and it was admirably performed.
I want to learn this! This is totally what describes my personality! I can't really say what describes what, but something about this stuff makes me feel good. :D oh and awesome music, reminds me of the theme song from once upon a time in china. Man, kung fu stuff is soo cool!
Ralph Lawrence Thanks for your enthusiasm Ralph Lawrence! Glad you enjoyed the video. I encourage you to search out a qualified instructor and learn the art of Hung Gar. You'd be a welcome addition to our Kung Fu community!
Thank you for your encouraging words SirDragonheart592. Kung Fu is very precious to me and like yourself, I am indebted to all the Masters that came before me for their dedication and effort in passing on this amazing art to us. I hope to live up to their greatness and serve as a conduit: Passing the tradition from one generation to the next.
Thanks for your positive observations jomess7879. I agree too often the differences of Martial Arts tears us apart when really its the differences that should bring us together. We are all on the same path and the Martial Arts we study are tools on our journey. Glad to hear your Sensei instills the Martial Virtue with you my brother.
that was a lot of moves to fit in 3 minutes. very balanced.
Thank you for your kind words.
Super
Thank you very much!
beautiful
+MelvinsaurusRex Thank you so much for your kind words.
hey I just saw the video and I was wandering what is the first movement called when opening the form? The crouched stance with front foot just touching the floor. But yeah great skill, looks amazing.
Hello. Thank your for your kind words. Glad to hear you enjoy the Demo. The very first movement is the bow associated with the Hung Gar system often times translated as "Tiger and Dragon come out of the cave". It appears at the beginning of almost every Hung Gar form and is one of our trademarks.
If only I lived long enough, I would learn this too.
The horizontal fist 👊 and the vertical fist ✊ are thrown differently, what's the reason for that?
Great question. The horizontal fist is mainly used to hit the solar plexus area under the sternum so the strike fits better in that region at a horizontal angle. The vertical fist hits the face and by being in a vertical position, can strike the nose, upper lip, mouth, and chin simultaneously when oriented in a vertical position.
Thank you. I appreciate your encouraging words.
Excellent form and ging store and release from the ground...ho gung-fu
Ezridah2013 Thank you very much Sifu Lee. I admire your skill and your praise inspires me further!
Ah man, that's so damn good.
I wish there was a Hung Gar school near me :')
metalismysoul Thank you for your kind words. Where are you located? Perhaps I can make a suggestion if I know of anyone near you who teaches Hung Gar.
tigercrane805 I'm in Lincoln in the UK, unfortunately the only schools seem to be in London (150 miles away) or Manchester (100 miles away).
It's a style that has always fascinated me and I would love to study it at some point but due to the location issues now is not the right time. Taiji will have to keep me happy until then :)
metalismysoul Sorry to hear that the distance is so far. I know several classmates that traveled overseas to learn our system. They would visit my teacher for a week at a time. Then go home and practice and return the following year to learn more. These individuals are Masters in their own right now and are exemplary in their knowledge of Hung Gar. If you really wish to learn our system, I highly recommend Sifu Leon Dogan in Dalston. Perhaps you could pay him a visit on a trip and pick up our system bit by bit as your time permits. Best Wishes in all your endeavors!
tigercrane805 Thank you for the advice, and thank you for recommending Sifu Leon Dogan :) I think travelling and learning bit by bit would be the most convenient.
I cannot thank you enough for the advice you have given me, best wishes to you as well!
+S Baldwin You're more than welcome. I wish you much success in your journey and hope to see your Hung Gar in the future. Take care!
Pretty style
Oh I see Zuflus. I'll ask around and see if I can find anyone in Vancouver that you can contact. Thanks again for your support and enthusiasm.
I believed you shortened the form for competition purpose. Very nice.
avatar !!! haha
How right you are armytrpt1979. For those of us fortunate to have met fine Sifus, we realize that their skill is an embodiment to their lifetime of dedication, sacrifice, and perseverance. Thank you for commenting.
Thank you pton226. I encourage you to seek out instruction in our style of Hung Gar Kuen. There are many qualified instructors out there who will be happy to teach you.
100% amazing form and power
Thank you very much. I’m glad you enjoyed the performance.
Hi theDeadliestwarrior7 Hung Gar is a good style, however, there are many systems that are also quite good. Your size and weight are not of particular concern as the practice of most Martial Arts leads to the transformation of one's physique in accordance with the movements of the style. Speed is not limited by one's build but by the intermittence of relaxation and tension. My advice to you is to find which style interests you most. If you enjoy it and are interested you will do well at it
Thank you for your enthusiasm Zuflus Frozenhearth. Where do you reside? Perhaps there may be a school or instructor I know of near you that I can recommend..
I wish we had this in my city. We had 1 kung fu school, but i didn't like the atmosphere there. And it's out of business now.
Sorry to hear that. I hope you can find a good school in the future.
