Thanks, Just a quick tip: before locking in place, put a piece of the paper where the pen touches in the bottom to guarantee it will touch it. It can make a difference when the paper is thick. 😊
Your tutorials have helped tremendously with my understanding of how to use my Scan n Cut machine. I just ordered this pen holder. Thank you for taking the time to share with us!
Went and brought the pen holder yesterday, then first thing this morning this video popped up in my new videos as soon as I opened my iPad (spooky!)...learnt a lot, now just have to sort out my pens and play, living in Australia we don’t have the great UK craft shops, so going to hunt around buy some and play. Thanks again for the informative video 🙂🙂
just want to say thanks, I've just bought the scan n cut and I'm proud to say I've made my first easel heart card following your video. its come out better than I expected. I'm now trawling through your videos for a heart box to put it in any info would be much appreciated. I didn't want to put it in an envelope because its for my sons wedding. thanks again.
Your tutorials are great. I got my Scan N Cut 650W last Friday and am enjoying trying things out. Thanks to you I figured out how put a word in a frame and cut it out.
Very helpful. I've been trying to figure out how to get the pen to draw the designs on things. While watching you, I paused your video and went to my machine and it worked!!! Thank you so much.
Hi thank you glad it helped, on my channel there is a search box with a magnifying glass if you type pen tool in that other videos will come up for you.
Mel Heaton tried out the Sakura Glue pen on Create and craft a while back and it worked well but definitely don't position the drawing anywhere near the rollers to avoid getting glue on them. You can also use an embossing fluid pen and then heat emboss it afterwards. I've had my pen holder for quite a while but not really had time to play with it yet but I do think it's a great addition to the machine. Thanks for your demo. Mel also showed the taping of the pens on C&C but I'd forgotten how she did it so it's always very useful to have a refresher lesson from you. Xx
Hi thanks for the info, I've ordered a glue pen now so will have a play when it arrives, I don't watch C&C so not seen Mel do anything, it was a FB member who told me about the deal for the machine the other day so I watched.lol
I do get tempted by the new machine but I think to myself do I really need it just for the wifi and a few extra designs and the answer is no because I don't use it enough at the moment to justify it. It really annoyed me as well that we paid several hundred more for our original machines which we will never recoup by selling them on. Let me know when you've played with yours for a while how you feel and was it worth upgrading.
I know mine is 3 yrs old now and still works perfectly, thats why Ive never changed. But I use mine quit a bit one way or another, either for personal crafting or making videos and its become annoying because i have computer in one room and SNC in another, so I decided I would treat myself which is something i don't do very often. lol
I have just tried some fineliner pens, united office, 8 different colours in a pack, they work brilliantly, they are very slim, I used masking tape. So chuffed, thanks for the video, it got me cracking!
I do hand piecing and use a Fixion pen to draw my seam line on the wrong side of my fabric. It irons off after I have stitched it and if it should come back, it doesn't matter: the mark is on the wrong side of the fabric. The pen fits nicely in the holder without tape and a good choice when you want a temporary line. You could use this method for hand embroidery. G
Hi Ashley- First off I'd like to thank you for ALL your videos, they are wonderful. You speak slowly and clearly and go over things we need to know. I was wondering if this universal pen holder will work with the SDX225?
Thanks so much for the ideas. I only bought the pen holder on Thursday and haven't had time to play yet, but I now know where to start the fun! Cheers. ☺
Fine line sharpies work great. I have found that i don't need to use tape, put your pen in and push the grey locking mechanism right over to lock it will secure the pen.
Would you tell me how/where you learned to do all that you show with Scan n Cut, since there are no instructions in the Craft Workshop? Thank you. Your tutorials are fantastic! Simple, clear and easily understood.
I have owned previous electronic cutting machines, they all do more or less the same thing, and so does the software. Ive just spent hours and hours playing and learning over the years.
Hi, Firstly, I want to thank you for all you do for our community. Secondly, when you get to the part when you fill in the font there is a point where you go to “the pattern” towards the end and you say choose the icon that shows a pen tip on paper. I’m using the cm650wx and I don’t see it. Could you give me a better idea where it’s at? Thanks in advance!
Hi I’m not sure what you mean as that video is over 5 yrs old, but I gave several videos on my channel using the own tool, from the home page of my channel type pen tool in the search box where the magnifying glass is and they should come up for you
I bought some Sharpies that were on special offer When I was on holiday in July, they are too fat for my Scanncut pen holder. Luckily I had bought some cheap "Carioca" Felt pens they were just right , but I have been going wrong by putting the tape at the top and not on the bottom of the of the pen, (of course me being me I I threw away the instructions!) thank you for your tutorials I don't know where I would be without them.
Hi June, I emailed Brother and they emailed me the instructions. Tried to copy and paste them to applelover, but it wouldn’t‘ take paste so I’ll try to paste it directly to you. Here it is. Sorry, it just won’t allow pasting here. What I suggest is that you email brotherservice@mailva.custhelp.com. Someone by the name Tammy sent it to me. Good luck.
I tried again and the sound comes after 50 seconds. Thank you for this video, I bought one of these pens a while ago but haven't used it yet. I will go and get the pens you suggest.
The glue pen you mentioned you were looking for is by Sakura and is called a Quickie Glue Pen. There are still available in the US so I would they would be available there as well. Check Amazon.
applelover53 Yes,I use them for machine embroidery if the bobbin thread shows on top, just colour in with closest colour to top thread. Sharpie Permanent Marker ultra fine point. I don't know how to add a picture. Also I am in Canada but I'm sure you can get the same ones in the U.K. Thanks for all your help and have a great weekend.
Great video. Scribblicious also do a pack of ten roller ball pens in assorted colours that fit the universal pen holder without tape. I've just got back from town where I bought a pack in The Works for £4. Went to pay and got them for £3. :) They write beautifly.
I bought a little while ago, two Ranger 'EMBOSS It PEN' to draw, then add the embossing powder and heat to set - have you tried this? They are quite thin pens so they still need to have tape around them like you do with some of yours. It is a good idea which came from RUclips somewhere - cannot remember where from. Ann x
Thank you for giving me so much information, I will buy some now that you showed me how to use them. It is kind of you to tell us what to use and what not to use it helps.
Hi there is only one universal pen holder but some pens needed to have tape applied to them to make them fit, so brother brought out another pen holder they call it the small barrel pen holder, which is supposed to help not to have to tape up pens to make them fit properly, then there is the original pen holder which holds the short coloured pens that brother make, theres also a caligraphy pen holder so i guess it can get a little confusing!
When you lock the pen in place inside the holder are little teeth that tighten around the pen, i have used this with lots of different pens and never had to tape pens up
Hi Debra Vick, if you do not know anyone with a scan n cut machine who will allow you to photocopy their universal pen holder instructions so you can use the taping guide, you could try emailing brother & they may be able to send it to your email as a printable pdf. If I were very skilful with a computer I would do it for you, but alas I am not. I am in Australia, so if you can not access the instructions faster I could have someone here help me either copy mine for emailing or snail mail a copy but I am sure snail mail takes a very long time if you are in the U.K.
I have a copy of the universal pen holder instructions that someone was looking for. I emailed Brother and got this: Darn, it won’t let me paste the information here. Any ideas? Thanks.
Had my machine a year, played with it a lot when I first got it, but made lots of errors. Have just started to try from begining again. What is the font converter ?
Hi, Its a little piece of software that allows us to use all the fonts on our computers, if you go to my channel and look in my canvas playlist you should find an introduction video all about it and then i made several other videos using it.
Maybe someone could take a picture of their directions for you and email it to you. Or, how about calling Brother. Maybe they would scan a copy for you.

Great glad you liked it, I don't think I've done a heart box, but there is possible one in the projects in SNC Canvas online,
Lots of people can do this stuff but it takes a special skill to teach it. Thanks so much for your clear concise instructions.
Thank you
Your tutorials are great. I got my Scan N Cut 650W last Friday and am enjoying trying things out. Thanks to you I figured out how put a word in a frame and cut it out.

Hi! I use Sharpie ultra fine point. They don't require any taping at all! They come in a lot colors
Great thank you I will keep looking for some to try

Great, have fun. Thank you
Hello Ashley Im on the Isle of Wight I watch all of your videos
Hello in the Isle of white.
My UPH arrived today. I have the fine line sharpie in my embroidery stash and they fit good.
Great, Ive not had time to look for any but I will do at some point, are they permanent like the regular ones?
applelover53 Yes,I use them for machine embroidery if the bobbin thread shows on top, just colour in with closest colour to top thread. Sharpie Permanent Marker ultra fine point. Hi I have a little project in mind for drawing with SNC onto fabric, so permanent pens would be good. Thanks
Brilliant video. It was good to see "shopping" in UK Hope to get some pens soon from The Works or Hobbycraft
Thank you

Hi, o I've not tried those pens. I did have an embossing pen but cannot find it, so will be trying more out in the future
Thank you for giving me so much information, I will buy some now that you showed me how to use them. It is kind of you to tell us what to use and what not to use it helps.
Thank you glad the video helped
Many thanks for this. I only have the original pen holder and pens so I will now investigate the universal pen holder!
You are welcome, thank you for watching.
my universal holder has just come to day so this video was brill thank you .
Great have fun thank you
Thanks Ashley. What if I want to colour for instance a rainbow? Do you have to make a new pattern for each colour?
Yes you do or you would have to try and stop the machine in between each colour to change the pen, which may not be easy
Thank you a lot, Ashley. I try and make several patterns then.
Didn't even know about the universal pen holder. Got to have it! Thanks.
Oh ok it's great, have fun if you get one.
Have you tried an embossing pen to use with embossing powder x
I too am new to ScanNCut your videos are awesome.
Thank you
Can you only use it with thin pens? Was thinking about using it with my foil quill freestyle
I’m hoping to be able to write on Mylar/acetate shapes I’ve cut with SNC.
Hi. Can the universal pen holder be used to do embossing?
Hi why is there two universal pen holders available? It’s is quiet confusing when you are new to this . But I have both now lol

When you lock the pen in place inside the holder are little teeth that tighten around the pen, i have used this with lots of different pens and never had to tape pens up
Yes i just depends on the diameter of the pen, several of mine are too thin so I have apply tape.
Wow! A whole new world of possibilities just opened up! No more need to buy sentiments for cards! Off to order a universal pen holder...
Yes the universal pen holder is great.
Thanks, I use Cricut pens, which do not need taping, try them out. Derek
Ok great thank you
Yeah your tutorials are brilliant
Glad you think so!
I need to buy a pen holder. My machine came with the small pens but no holder
They are handy to have, but the small ones are good for when you are first starting off with drawing/writing. Thank you
Lynn Cook Cook mine did too, which is a bit of a pain, as the holders are not cheap! Xx💚
thank you now I just need to practice, your videos are ver clear
Your videos are so helpful! The only thing, is I have to turn my volume up all the way, and I still have a hard time hearing you.
This video was recorded live and I did ask if everyone could here me sorry
I have learned a lot from watching your videos thanks Pamela.
You are welcome thank you.
Have you tried the fabric markers, pens?
No, that's one of my next projects to try. Just need the markers
Hi Debra Vick, if you do not know anyone with a scan n cut machine who will allow you to photocopy their universal pen holder instructions so you can use the taping guide, you could try emailing brother & they may be able to send it to your email as a printable pdf. I have ust ordered my pen holder, thank you for the help
You are welcome have fun when it arrives.
Very informative. Enjoyed very much. Thanks Val.
Thank you
Thank you very much for the helpful information
You are welcome thank you
Thank you for video...do you know of a font I can get just like WRITING ✍️ don’t have to fill in???
My favourite at the moment is called Astina and it’s from dafont.com
I have a copy of the universal pen holder instructions that someone was looking for. I emailed Brother and got this: Darn, it won’t let me paste the information here. Any ideas? Thanks.
It was a very useful video. Thanks
Can I also use the pens (write marker) from stampin up? My English is not good😥. I am from Austria 🇦🇹. Thank you 😉
Anything that will fit in the universal pen holder can be used, thanks
my pen moved back up, where did you get the chart?
Sorry, what chart
Another very helpful video.Thank you!
Thanks
Can the pen images be filled in with the pens?
Yes I’ve got all the videos on my channel showing how to do that look in the playlists under font or live You should find them
I’m sad my StampinUp markers don’t fit the holder😩
Hi The Stampin Up Stampin write markers fit the universal pen holder, ive used them in a video which should be on my channel somewhere.
Thanks I have used a glue pen, so that I can foil my card top.
i used the scribbaliscious and it moved up, wouldnt tighten, had to put tape on?
Yes you do have to put tape on some of the pens I’ve shown in several videos
Had my machine a year, played with it a lot when I first got it, but made lots of errors. Have just started to try from begining again. What is the font converter ?
Hi, Its a little piece of software that allows us to use all the fonts on our computers, if you go to my channel and look in my canvas playlist you should find an introduction video all about it and then i made several other videos using it.
Thank you so much, you site looks fabulous. Downloaded font converter, now watching how to use. Many thanks again x
You are welcome, have fun.
What do you do with the glue pen?
You could draw a shape or word, with the glue pen on card and then once out of the machine you could add glitter or foil to the glue.
Thank you, that's a great idea.
Have fun if you try it, keep the design away from the machine rollers, you don't want to get glue on them
Can I also use the pens (write marker) from stampin up? Sorry my English is not good😥. I am from Austria 🇦🇹. Thank you
Can I use on mylar
I would think you would need to use a permanent pen but as long as it can fit in the pen holder I cannot see why not
Very helpful thank you
Great video, Thankyou so much.
Thank you
Where would I get another Instruction sheet that comes with the universal pen holder. I can't find mine, I probably threw it away.
Sorry I have no idea
Maybe someone could take a picture of their directions for you and email it to you. Or, how about calling Brother. Maybe they would scan a copy for you.
This was very informative. 🤗
Thank you
You’re a great teacher.
Thank you is a great tutorial
thank you
Hi I can't hear it at all.
i got mine yesterday and tried some of my pens. one was too large. one was to thin. one had a Clip in the way. i was quite a bit disappointed of this UNIVERSAL holder. i surely will find some pens that fit perfectly. the original pens are not that bad but very expensive and the Color range is a joke. i also had to set the pressure to "1" to make it write correctly.
Just experiment and see what fits, if they are too small add tape like I showed in my video.
The Sharpie Fine Tips Pens are Fanastic!! FYI
Ive not been able to fine any in the uk where i live, i look whenever i go near a stationers shop, thank you
applelover53 If have a mailing address I can send you some! Unless they are banned in the UK for some reason?
Hi, its fine thank you I will find some eventually.
Sharpie fines bleed too much thou
so hard to hear what your saying. Will have to lock myself in a very quiet room to catch what your saying.
Ok sorry to hear that, it's perfect for me on playback I watched it tonight on iPad and could here everything
This was very helpful! Thank you
Thank you very informative
