    I started out doing what most people do, and that was to shift the ball position forward or back in the stance depending on the club. I took a lesson from a guy that showed me this video, as well as a book written by Ben Hogan, where they both said that ball position should be off the front inside heel for ALL clubs. Ever since then, I have been hitting my hybrids, irons, and wedges solid. It definitely depends on the golfer, but clearly the "old school" approach is what works for me.

  • @Goynes42
    @Goynes42 14 лет назад +12

    @Captsaison While that may be true, a lot of people forget a crucial factor with Nicklaus' method of playing the ball off the left heel for all shots. As the clubs got shorter, his stance got narrower. With a narrower stance, a ball played off the left heel is actually quite close to the center of one's stance--as it should be for the shorter clubs--promoting a downward strike on the ball. With longer clubs, his stance got gradually wider, which promoted a more sweeping attack into the ball.

    I've studied Jack for a long time.Read his teachers book recently(How I taught Jack Nicklaus by Jack Grout).This swing generates tremendous clubhead speed resulting in very impressive distances.My drives are always threatening 300 yards.This swing does require strong legs and hips and good flexibility.Power does NOT come from the hands.Jack calls the hands "lime light hoggers" and "swing ruiners". Power is generated from "the feet up" using the kinematic sequence to transfer power to the club.

  • @emncaity
    @emncaity 16 лет назад +1

    That is really good to hear. The golf swing--like any physical movement--can be made as complicated as you want to, and there's a hell of a lot of money in it. But you look at all the greatest players, and how many of them had complicated methods? Tiger and Jack work on about four or five main fundamentals, and that's it. Snead, same thing. Even Hogan's book was way shorter than all the hugely detailed screeds that followed it.

    Interesting, fairly new to developing a swing, but with many, many years observing, I've noticed I tend to stance the same with a driver down to a 6i, but tend to center with pw and putter, and I do very well. Watching the " All time greats " Tiger included, tells me, the perfect golf swing, is developed by personal ability, style and preference.

  • @DASH1ful
    @DASH1ful 8 лет назад +2

    head position is the most fascinating thing about the swing, for me. jack, like all golfers, except bobby jones, who was left eye dominant, has his right eye directly over the ball at impact. obviously the right eye is behind the ball address and the big question is how does the head move itself into a position where the right eye is directly over the ball at impact? and does the way we look up at the target have any bearing on the way we position our head? jack looks up with the left side of his head, then, when he looks back at the ball, he nudges the left side of his head forwards. and i wonder, can we can make that an all in one movement and push the left side of the head forwards as we look up at the target at address?

  • @emncaity

    With all this talk about Tiger v. Jack, it should be noted that the principles behind their swings (at least with Tiger's best swings, the ones where his head isn't moving a foot downward at the outset of his downswing) are pretty much identical: wide, extended arc; straight left wrist in line with clubface and left forearm at the top; power from the ground up; firm left side at impact; wide extension past the ball; release a blend of hands, forearm rotation, and body rotation. Timeless.

  • @jerryfalwellsociety
    @jerryfalwellsociety 5 лет назад

    If you look at 01:16 you can see that actually he did change the ball position (relevant to his left heel). With the 9 iron it's on the inside of his left heel, progressing to the driver when it's off his big toe. Despite his commentary.

    Also, he's really talking about the basic ball position being in approximately the same place relative to the front foot. Biomechanically it makes a lot of sense, because of the tendency of the bottom of the swing arc to locate itself consistently relative to about the inside of the lead armpit or so. Dropping the trailing foot back or bringing it forward adjusts the swing center, even when the ball is in the same position relative to the front foot.

  • @brown547
    @brown547 15 лет назад

    Yep, moving the swing arc forward, i.e. the left shoulder moving froward, actually moves the ball back in the stance relative to "low point " or the bottom of the swing which explains why Jack and Mr. Hogan played a fade, or a cut most of the time, and both were deadly accurate with it.

    Having said that, I think even Jack knows that with modern drivers in particular, playing it a fraction farther forward isn't such a bad idea, since a level or even slightly ascending blow is ideal. But his basic point is right, because it has to do with simplifying the setup and swing to promote consistency and solid contact.

    ...apart from the fiddling with plane and other tweaking, his basic fundamentals _are_ Jack's--the big shoulder turn and width of arm swing, the dead-square left wrist, unwinding from the ground up, nose pointed at the ball's original position until full extension on the follow-through. The one thing that's not in that mix is a super-steady head, and coincidentally that's one thing Tiger's been working on the past couple of years and has improved it a lot.

If the old players would have had the equipment of today we would have had similar results. Comparing results over ages is mostly futile in my view. The length of the shaft and wider stance may handle this problem depending on each individuals strength-coordination factor. And turning the chin slightly to right placing the left eye on the ball opens up the pivot and turn, but you must make sure the short irons don't follow the driver' arc. Jack faced down so many differant generations of great golfers and beat them all its just amazing. Tiger is the best there is today; I'm sure of that now after watching these other guys without tiger in the field, but I just don't know if his body and mind will be able to go the long haul, especially now.

    (continued from last post) Some may adapt to the differences in the arc through practice and never notice the difference. Others may experience inconsistant shots because they are not aware of the arc's difference. The key is to be able to swing consistantly within different arcs. Again some people have natural talent and do this naturally - while others spend their wheels not knowing what the problem is.

    You clearly never saw Jack in his prime. Given the same equipment, no age difference, and both in there prime it would be fun to watch both go at it. Both are great golfers hands down. My hope is Tiger can get it going again.

    The one I left out is (most Nicklaus fans will know this) the "head still" principle, which Jack said was his #1 fundamental without which all other fundamentals break down and become unanalyzable and undoable. I absolutely guarantee you you can correlate TW's best ballstriking weeks with his head being relatively more still (although it still moves more than Jack's did in Jack's prime). If he ever really got hold of that fundamental, he'd hit 50% more fairways instantly.

    @stackleft Exactly, that's why I don;t understand why he says that. If you look at the 4 frame view of his address, the club is much further away from the body with the driver and gradually moves closer with the shorter clubs. This is clearly NOT the same swing for all shots unless you want to try to parse out the argument.

    he's also inaccurate off the tee sometimes because of the late hands of his reworked swing sometimes cause him to push it

    @sretsam68 well its a tough argument to say who is better both are great players and I will leave it at that......both DOMINATED their respective times......

    @Gyro911
    Just one example: If you remember when Woods and Mediate had a playoff for the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines a couple of years ago, you had two guys in a tie for the 72-hole lead who had hit barely over 50% of the fairways IN A U.S. OPEN--and still beat everybody else. If courses were "harder" these days, they both would've shot about 82 on Thursday and Friday and missed the cut.

    then narrow your stance as JACK says....the ball will be in your middle of stance.....try moving the ball position one ball back or forth to fine tune your perfect bottom of swing

    Agreed. Other than Hogan, no one hit more greens percentage-wise than Jack.

    @sretsam68 not to mention of course the great barrier that held hundreds upon thousands of coloured people from playing our fantastic game. The game of golf has become much more competitive, with a much larger playing field. We see more excellent golfers than any other era today, Tiger is outstanding in this superior playing field. Which I believe makes Tiger Woods accomplishments thus far already far ahead of all of Nicklaus'. It seems absurd you can even imagine Nicklaus' CONTINUED

    Sure, you can't get a perfect comparison, but you can get something close. The major variables are course conditioning (fast fairways, mostly perfect lies, and perfect greens, particularly); equipment (HUGE differences); what clubs are needed for approach shots (e.g., 8-iron instead of 1-iron for #15 at Augusta); the all-exempt-tour birdiefest mentality; and maybe a couple more. You'll find that with minor sensible adjustments to account for these variables, scores haven't gone down at all.

    Aaaaand another thing: I totally agree with you about Hogan's comeback and what kind of toughness it showed, but I'd point to Hogan's background and his difficulty in the early years on tour as further evidence, too. Imagine a supremely talented but self-absorbed person such as Tiger, who had nothing to do in his life, ever, but play golf and get ready to be a champion, had the road paved for him, etc....imagine him coming out of the kind of early life Hogan had, and getting all the way to #1.

    Comments on race aside, you definitely came to the right place by coming to this vid,if you're trying to improve. Every big-picture thing Tiger and most other players are trying to do in their swings, Jack exemplified in his own swing (as passed down to him from Jack Grout). Let me know if you want some book references (unless you've already got them).
