I just realized, his life is going to be one of the greatest stories of all time. The amount of people - inspiration he gives to fans and fellow musicians, even the superstars and others with a legendary status. The vast difference in musical genres. The quality within every album and every live performance. go listen to his contributions to: Frank Ocean - Eric Clapton - BB King - Barbra Streisand - Leon Russel - Ed Sheeran... the list goes on and on... The revolutionary work he does with his trio... ( Ain't No Sunshine, California Dreamin' , After Midnight, Little Sur etc etc etc ) He truly is a "master musician" and "doesnt even know how good he really is" (words of Eric Clapton, who lived through SRV/Hendrix/Zepplin/Beatles ETC) Every part of his life adds to music as a whole, and we get to sit back and enjoy the ride.
Hey Funky Stevie J, I am 63, started playing at 11. I'm embarrassed to tell you how long it took me to learn "Who Says". I'm only a rhythm player but had to get those riffs throughout. And to sing on top of that, it nearly killed me. That's why I do only 4 or 5 of his songs. I agree with all sentiments praising John Mayer. It didn't take long for most people to understand the monster musician this guy is. Even musicians who said they hate him and/or he sucks, did so out of resentment of the greatness he possesses. "HOWEVER", I do disagree with only one small, tiny, little statement you had made. I think he does know how good he is. He has to. This is a gift, yes, but it was also in large part, the result of incredibly hard work and dedication to his passion. I can't make the claim to have the knowledge of Clapton on musicianship. But I can say, almost from the start of his fame, I argued he was perhaps the best I have ever heard. He does it all, and extraordinarily well. Have a good life and keep playing my friend.
Lawrence Kedz Thank you, and while I do somewhat actually agree with your disagreement, here is what I mean: Eric Clapton has the knowledge of how a musician progresses through the length of time. John Mayer has only a fraction of what Clapton has. I think what Clapton meant is that John is still young, and he is already considered a master musician. He might not even realize how much time he has to still improve. I also read in an interview that Mayer is very self conscious when he plays. He said he still lacks confidence about his guitar playing. (2015 MSM interview about The Dead & Co.)
FunkyStevieJay Hey friend, Many things I am not, and being technically savvy is one. I do believe that I am technically declined, in all phases of computers. That being said, I'm not sure how I posted here. I think I've seen it at another site, and thought it was you saying Mayer didn't know how good he was. I didn't realize it was a statement by Clapton. Obviously, I took this out of context, or so I believe. I'm quite sure we're on the same page here. Sorry for my mistake. I'm thinking that you are a musician also, if so, what instrument?
Lawrence Kedz I have played guitar professionally for a few years now. Mayer is definitely an awesome person to learn from. He has such a versatile way about him and he never skimps on a performance. So much great content; not something you can learn from a book.
+FunkyStevieJay I agree totally. Never saw him live but his videos and recordings were enough for me to believe he was the best, since I tried to learn "DAUGHTERS". A lot of others would not agree I think because of jealousy. And most of these guys should have known better. Go figure. P.S., don't know how I miss your reply. My apologies. Keep playing my friend.
He's just such a monster musician. If people could see the genius. He's as hard to play as any so called guitar God, but the guitar never gets in the way of the song. Thats key!
Erin Taylor His guitar work is a 'guitar god' in his own right, after all the apparent 'guitar god', Eric Clapton, claimed him to be one of the best guitarists he has ever seen play. This in the average persons view makes him a 'guitar god'.
This is john mayer at his best.. His music, the lyrics, his voice, his hat..Everything he does becomes amazing... his each song is special and i can say John mayer SPEAKS FOR ME!!
Sil Albers I don’t even think there using tuning on his acoustic recordings. You can hear that it’s not because he’s speak/singing. And some of his notes are off. I think they just used compression on his voice
He is a great song writer and genius guitar player. These acoustic sessions are just magical. If you play the guitar, you quickly realize just how great he is. Many don't like his acoustic stuff as much as the screeming electric blues playing (which I also like very much), but there is nothing for you to hide behind when it's just you and a pine topped box. The acoustic guitar is simply honest, and if it is played well like it is here, there is not a better sounding instrument out there. My opinion.
@@trey_a Definitely it’s true that his singing isn’t a God-given talent, but as a singer- songwriter aspect, he is incomparable. I think Amaral has written this comment for both singer and songwriter aspects.
I'm pretty sure John has always played from the soul, it's just his way of viewing life and music that has changed. He and his music have become more downtoned, more calm, more pure. I love him both ways! I'm pretty sure I'll love Mayer, whatever he does.
always amazed by this young man. Thank you for bringing me joy. I am a classical trained musician (french horn) now retired. I don't listen to just anyone, there is something very special that is speaking to me through his music.
You can tell that something isn't right When all your heroes are in black and white What a drag to say At least I still have yesterday Probably my favorite lyrics on the album
born and raised sounds optimistic, like you've found a new hope or a realization that everything's gonna be fine. i love, love the album so much. God bless John Mayer
Such real, honest, music, and soul pouring out. It doesn't get better than that from such talent and genious. Melt into it. Be inspired by it. Hate it. Love it. Do anything you want, the beauty is this video and john mayer's music.
I love John so it's tough to see him lamenting here in this song a little bit. I believe the things he's discussing are worth a pout at least. However, I like that he prefers to stay on the sunny-side of the street regardless of his circumstances. He raises poignant questions as a phrase, 'show me something...,' closing it with 'someone speak for me.' He is no ordinary man. We just love him for all and who he is, a Master, the Man and the King ❣🌟💎👑
He sings over this song as if he is not even playing the guitar and it seems like 2 guitarist are playing the song, john mayer is truely a musical genius
I see people comparing john mayer to other artist and trying to figure out who is better at playing guitar...People say i dont play as good as my brother or whoever but i dont play guitar to be better than anyone. I play guitar because i love it, and appreciate other people who can play it better than i can. Love JM's skill and dedication.
This is my second time listening to you John Mayer, and I am struck without a doubt a brand new look on my guitar playing... I've never really been spoken to in the most greatest way ever and now my day has been totally rectified into something that is meaningful.. And my guitar playing skills tip their hats to you .. Thank you, Chris (Sullivan)
I am in awe of his music. He is so talented. His soul and passion really shine through when he sings and you can easily tell how much he enjoys singing and playing. Good luck John Mayer. May the sun always shine on your way.
That constant bass note underneath the main part of the song is absolutely insane. It is so incredibly difficult to get that timing so spot on while still performing complicated lines AND singing at the same time. It reminds me of Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, Mark Knopfler and other similar players. Bravo John

I've rated John Mayer for years. I love everything that he's done but this new album... this is the real deal. This is the John Mayer behind the celebrity and fame. I really hope he continues to take this journey because its heartfelt and genuine and it works for me!
Oh, my god, these recordings are so nice. Very up close and really demonstrate his incredible abilities and talent..plus many years of dedication to his craft.
Lmao I remember me and my high school buddies just repeating that solo part in loop so we could copy it and learn it for our coffee house performance 😂 among other videos you had up during those years, you really helped us not only have killer applauses and awes but expanded our playing. Sadly none of my friends play as much as me 15 years later, but I’m still here, coming back to listen and learn your stuff!
I love this version - so much better than the studio version in that his voice is playing more with the lyrics. He has so much soul in his music. Such honesty. Love his music; love his vulnerability.
He absolutely nailed that underbelly inhibition lying in some peoples stomachs. Nostalgia in the body for a time you never knew. Goosebump city. "you can tell somethin aint right, when all my heroes are in black and white"
I love this song. I had a moment in my life where I just got judged and lost a lot of friends. I had no idea what was going on and I just ended up having a lot of mental scars realizing my own church group cut me out. This song says it all - can someone come speak for me? and it's true after 4 yrs too ;)

John Mayer is the artist of our generation. NOBODY can replicate his singing voice and no one will ever touch his guitar playing. He's truly blessed.
I think what I love about this version is how his voice breaks ever so slightly.. It just sounds raw and unaltered I love it..
I'm pretty sure these were recorded just before he went into surgery for his vocal chords. He couldn't sing for a year after that while he healed.
FlyingsCool True he said it in an interview that he recorded what he could before he had the operation. this is one of those pieces
he uses autotune in every single one of his records
@@sandradinis7184 not autotune but just regular tuning. That's pretty different than autotune.

i couldnt agree more. People dont have to like every song he's ever played but you cant deny that this dude is a fantastic singer and guitar player.

"I'm not mad about it, but I'm not mad about it." In other words, "I'm not upset about it, but I don't really like it either." Very cool.

I listen to John Mayer every single day and never realized this omg
Wow u r a genius man
Im sarcastic

he's so incredible! I haven't seen a guitarist who's that good at singing and playing at the same time
