- In the 80s as drugs, guns and crime rocked the District, FOX 5 DC had a recurring segment called "City Under Siege." With numbers rising again across D.C., FOX 5 has resurrected "City Under Siege" -- but is crime in D.C. back to the same level we saw decades ago?
FOX 5's Maureen Umeh looks at archival reports and talks to leaders today to answer the question - is D.C. a "City Under Siege"?

I had just got out in the streets in 90, and it was wild as a mf. DC didn't stand for district of columbia ,it was dodge city. I'm blessed to make it out of that time...

It just doesn’t feel like the 80s and 90s when crime was a trillion times worse than the post-pandemic world that we live in now. But, let’s get a handle on this before it gets that bad…

The violence is back at higher levels but the saturation of drugs aren’t back at those equivalent levels; now it’s heavier on organized theft and muggings, vs thousands of tiny cuts that truly rampant drugs use bring about.. These are relatively sober people that are not selling a product to the public rather organized robberies. At least that is the sense I have now. It’s definitely different, even if it got worse than it was in the 80s early 90s, it would still be different, it’s a different little era.
Muriel has been failing D.C. for sometime now.
Bowser really needs to get out. She's been there for three terms, and it has progressively gotten worse under her administration.

Yes the violence is increasing in DC. That is why the capitals & wizards are moving out of DC. It doesn't matter how much money the mayor of puts into the stadiums if crime is high in the area then the spectators will not ho to the games. Business are closing because of the crime in DC and if the mayor doesn't deal with the crime more business will move out until there is nothing left in DC but criminals.

While I haven’t been back there in years, I’d say while crime is rising it’s definitely not what it was back in the Dodge City days by a long shot. Back in that time by October the murders would’ve already been way past 400. People in the present are tripping off half of that by the same period. All I’m saying is that DC, comparatively, is better off now than it was then. It’s bad but not Dodge City state of emergency bad.

Also the homicide rate for Black DCs residents are astronomically high and very concerning. So Democrats claim to be good for Black people but how come Black homicide rates are the highest in cities under Democratic control. They seem to be part of the problem and not the solution.
I believe crime across the country has been heightened due to the loosening of gun laws in many states. The loud public debate over guns, the mass shootings and paranoia has prompted millions of people to began to open carry and conceal carry firearms. Sure, a lot of trained, leveled headed citizens can be trusted but now we have legions of untrained, emotionally unstable and/or frightened people who shouldn't be trusted with a slingshot. Many of these folks are also intoxicated on something, liquor, weed, cocaine etc. In my town the local ten years ago news reports of shootings was maybe a two or three per month. Today, I wake up to reports of several shootings every single day.

Honestly, it’s the culture. Sorry to say. No matter how many programs and how much you throw at it it will NOT change. The issue has been happening for the past 30/40 yrs and it’s only gotten worse. So again, it’s a cultural thing. Of course we can’t say who it’s coming from but everybody knows.
