  • Hey everyone, here is a video I have been working on for awhile. I have a lot of love for Animal Crossing New Horizons, but I do have one big problem with it and I am discussing it in this video. Please remember that this is my opinion, and I would love to hear your opinions in the comments below. Thank you all so much for watching.

The best villagers have ever been was in Wild World. Apparently City Folk broke the hobby system, it remains broken until New Horizons where it’s been erased from existence.

New Horizons has this dialogue for villagers. Talking to them a few times in a row will dig past the 'contextual' dialogue and will unlock more interesting things. I never knew Marshal used to be in a band and hated some guy named 'Nick' :o

Villagers still kinda have hobbies in new horizons, it's just not very obvious.
      Playing hobby: Naruto run
Fashion hobby: Browsing in Able Sisters
      Singing Hobby: Singing
      Nature hobby: Smelling/Watering plants
      Exercise hobby: Exercising
Those are some hobbies some villagers do. I'm sure there's more, but those are for sure some hobbies. They just don't feel the same as before.

I agree. In animal crossing new leaf, Kyle was in the first town I have ever created in the game. We became best friends with each other and he was so unique compared to other characters. But now. He's literally the same as raymond or phill, or O'hare. Its frustrating and the relationship building was the reason why new leaf and the franchise in general was so dear to me. Now it's more about looks and who fits the islands asthetic.

I definitely agree with this. Even New leaf had more interesting interactions, villagers would ask for things more often and come over to your house, or invite you over. In acnh I have been asked to do a scavenger hunt ONCE and I have been playing since release, and rarely ever do any of my villagers do anything fun, etc.

For real! Although I didn't like how some of the villager types were in New Leaf (cranky/snooty especially, they used to be so much harder to be friends with in the older games), I liked how many different things you could do with them. Like hide and seek, burying time capsules, delivering gifts, coming over to their/your house at a specific time. I think they have asked me for scavenger hunts maybe 3 times, and I have played over 300hrs so far.
I just feel like in the other games it took time until you became close to the villagers, in New Horizons it feels like they consider me their best friend after just a few days :(

The thing is that while the whole lockdown did initially help to boost this games' (and the Switch's) sales numbers, it also made it obviously clear that we all spent way too much time on this game over an otherwise relatively short time span. Apart from the updates, it feels as if almost all player's have experienced everything there is to the game, no surprises, no new featrures to discover. We burnt ourselves out basically, in our quest to built the most stunning islands and fill it with the most popular villagers. By the end of May, there was hardly anything to do. I think AC isn't a game which should be played execssively over 8 hours each day, except if you're really inspired and want to get your terraforming done (which can be draining in and of itself).

Danbo 22 in all previous animal crossing games all features were in the game with no updates after the fact, given the limitations of the consoles and such. However the latest full installment besides new horizons only had one big update 'Welcome Amiibo'. So basically they couldn't get all the features in time so they added it in later. They wouldn't want to delay the release date AGAIN and people in quarantine really needed it. So they cut corners for the time being and released it without some of its features. I mean, look at the lack luster amount of buildings. That's has to be enough proof. Plus they're adding on to buildings like adding art into the museum later rather than having it at the start.

I played Wild World growing up, and went back to it recently. True, there wasn't much customization, but the villagers made the game enjoyable. They had likes and dislikes, and personalities!! Sure, they were mean at some points, but if you got to know them they were nicer. They would talk about their past, and open up to you. You would know how they felt, and they felt more like friends. In New Horizons they feel more like accessories.
New Horizons is very customizable, sure, but we don't get the animal part of *Animal* Crossing. It's more of a designing and building game.
I just wish the villagers had personalities again. They don't have to be as mean as they were, but they're just cardboard cutouts in New Horizons.

    • @LoafofSora

I kinda liked how some were sassy or rude. Not saying I want people to be SO RUDE with me but it's like getting to make friends and enemys at the same time. I also want the type of drama too which would be really fun! My first game was also Wild World and I grew up playing with it. Ever since New Horizon came out I felt so sad because I needed to get enough money to buy a nintendo switch and the game. I'm probably still planning on doing that but I just wish they would change them into their normal personalities again. Now the villagers just feel like toys that yoy can do anything you want to and they have no sorts of feelings AT ALL. TO BE HONEST I had NO IDEA someone named Raymond existed when I played the game wild word. Only JUST figured it out. I kinda had a little crush on MY GUY MY DUDE Filbert. I still have the game Wild World but one of the sad things is that it's *TOO* overated. People are paying more attention to that and forgetting about the old ones. I'm saying is that people will assume new horizons is about creating your island and all cool like that and well-
Okay sorry I'm talking too much 😅 You get my point and I hope Nintendo sees this video.

My first game was ACNL, I played in 2015 and grew up with that. The dialogue in that game is so much more varied then in ACNH, and it’s disappointing.
I no longer have the want to consistently bug my villagers and speak to them- because now all they do is repeat the same lines over and over. Whilst in ACNL, I could have long conversations that I couldn’t even get bored from until said villager needs to take a break and think on their own.

Its not just the villagers there are many other big problems with New Horizons:
    1. You can only have one island per switch
    2. Crafting is so limited when you can craft one at a time
    3. The Online is so bare bones and the idea you have to wait to see who is arriving as a loading screen is the worst!
    4. There is a lack of rewards when all you're doing is earning Nook Miles
    5. Isabelle repeats the same announcements and only talks about her life rather than telling you which special villager is visiting
    6. There is no way to store your flowers or diys
    7. You cannot trade bugs or fish to your friends
    8. There is no shop upgrades and we only 2 shops which is really not enough
    9. The NookPhone is not as useful because there is just a lack of useful apps
    10. Most Furniture theme sets from past AC games are not in this game.

I spent my entire childhood playing the GameCube game and talking with my villagers to the point of them getting GENUINELY annoyed with me. Now I talk to them in acnh maybe once a day and it feels like a task I never look forward to anymore. When I played the first game, I didn’t know there were specific personality categories. I just thought of each villager as an individual. With acnh, I talk to Elise and get the same exact vibe from her as I get from Eunice (one of my other villagers.) I had Eunice in both games. In the GameCube version, she felt like a sweet grandmother I’d love to talk to and get advice from. In acnh, she feels like the old lady next door who you question if she’s still alive until you see her out walking her chihuahua three months later.

thats true, but when you talked about emotes i thought you were talking about the actual emotes you can do, that's also slow! In new leaf you could touch the icon and find any emote in like a second or 2, but now it favors 8 emotes and if you dare want to do an emote that's not in your 8 favorites then you gotta open your favorite wheel, open the "all emotes" menu, find the emote my moving case by case, THEN you can emote it,and it takes likes 10 seconds, which makes reacting in online very awkward when sometimes you'll react about 10 seconds late to something from the other player

I feel like back then (I started with wild world) there was also a progress in how nice villagers were to you based on your friendship level. It felt like you could really bond with them and they revealed more of their personality with time, rather than in every sentence like in new horizons. There were visits and flea markets and hide and seek (or was that in new leaf? It's been too long) and I miss the interactions and characters we had back then. Also, weren't villagers sometimes rude or insulted you? This always friendly clean slate of a character who always repeats everything is frustrating and it feels like a chore to talk to them in nh.
Also the updates. It may be nice new content for someone who never played animal crossing before but really: everything they released so far (and even more!) should have been in the base game.

I started with New Horizons then used my graduation money to buy New Leaf and Wild World and man, what a difference. I have five of my villagers' photos in Wild World now and Angus and Rasher are probably my two favorites in town. But the villagers I have there feel so different than New Horizons and it's kind of sad. I loved Hornsby when I met him in New Horizons, but after learning that he's basically the exact same as Zucker or Beau on my friends' islands makes me sad. It makes him feel less special to me. Angus and Rasher feel worlds apart from Rolf, my cranky NH villager. I have 3 normal villagers in NH and they're amazing, but it gets tiring. I usually stick to just talking to one of them which is usually Coco. Kid Cat and Lyman on my island feel so hollow compared to Boone in my New Leaf town or Jay and Kody in my Wild World village. And Lucky in Wild World feels vastly different from Hornsby. I talk to my villagers a lot less now, using my imagination to make up for the lack of character (something I'm used to doing with stuff.) I like each game for a different reason and for what each one does uniquely, but the lack of villager dialogue in NH and the personalities being boiled down to being so dull is really disappointing. I used to talk with my villagers so much when I first got the game, but now I'd rather talk to my villagers in Wild World and New Leaf than my New Horizons ones. I have recorded me playing each game to show one of my friends, I like sharing the experience with her, and she told me she sees the difference too despite having only play New Horizons.
I really hope that they try to improve this or fix this at some point. It can make the game difficult to play once you get far enough into it and it's really disappointing to see.

That definition of the game being a “crafting and customization sim” rather than a “life sim” is perfect, and it stinks for me, because I don’t care about crafting and customization. It’s fine, but it’s not special at all to me. New Horizons quickly ended up becoming my least favorite of the main series, because it doesn’t fulfill that definition of why the series was made. I have this exact problem
I started with new leaf and my favorite villager became Kabuki. He was in my original New Leaf town and I fell in love with him. I thought he was so cool!! I spent so much time gifting him things and I just love everything about him.
So imagine the heart break when I get on one day after a break from new leaf only to find a letter in my mailbox saying he moved away. I was so upset. I ended up saving the farewell letter and carrying it in my mail inventory at all times (still have it too)
Fast forward to my New horizons town. I end up trading for Kabuki because I just had to have him. I was ecstatic when the individual trading him agreed to my offer. He was the only reason I ever time traveled in NH and the only reason I ever will.
But now, he has the exact same dialogue as Octavian :( i feel stripped of everything I enjoyed about Kabuki in NL. I still love him and will keep him for sure but I wish I didn't talk to Octavian, walk over my bridge, talk to Kabuki, and get the exact same dialogue constantly

I had always gotten happy walking up to Kyle in new leaf and he would say "seems like we need a little more dancing right now" (or something along those lines lol) and now he talks about how he wants to be famous, just like Marshal and it kinda makes him feel as special as he did when I first built my relationship

I got his amiibo, so I was ecstatic to add him to my acnh island. But then he arrived after Marshal. Their dialogue was either exactly the same or Keaton's was worse, because he had a lower friendship level. They also ruined his house - he used to live in a beach house and now he lives in a parking lot! A parking lot! If you look at acnh guides, you'll see the lack of furniture in the starting game really impacted how repetitive and ugly a lot of the villager houses are now.
I love acnh, I do, and have definitely gotten my money's worth, I am just sad I'm going to have to crack open the old games to get the villager friendship that made me love the series.

@@NikoleBensing1693 I think that's just an ongoing issue with AC, of the devs not always establishing consistent characters for the villagers, rather than a specific issue with NH. In previous games, a villager's personality has been outright changed. There's no reason Keaton couldn't have a beach house in NH, other animals have that kind of look. I had Marshal in NL and he's not the same as in NH either, but there's no reason his house had to be so stylish in NH when in NL his Sloppy set gave the air of a just-about-held-together-disaster, he could've had some of the cardboard box furniture. Personality-wise, Smugs seems to have become more actually smug, while Lazies got some of the goofball and mild flirtiness that Smugs had in NL. I don't think it's purely NH, because the Lazy line where they say they were thinking about your face, with the heart emote, and then that oops, they didn't mean to say that aloud, I'd have found adorable and fitting from Marshal in NL, and I do find it adorable when Cranston says it in NH, it's not a worse line. It's just AC just isn't very consistent.

There is so much potential in this game and i hope they could work on the villagers first before giving us the other features. I also miss when they would mail you back a letter with a gift if you sent them one, the old friendship building systems from WW, and the hide n seek games/villagers asking to come to your house/scavenger hunt type things that made the game feel all the more immersive. I can see Nintendo listening to everyone and adding a dialogue update in the near future.

    • @nostalgiameadows23

Yeah, I can see that. I do have one idea to make the characters somewhat more unique. Remember how in WW villagers talk about their hobbies. Nintendo can do that but for New Horizons. New Horizons has hobbies of its own, but villagers don't appear to talk about them. I believe it'd be good to make villagers a bit more diverse. I do see the problem with that bit, though. And that is a majority of lazy villagers like to play, a majority of normal villagers like to educate themselves, and a majority of jock villagers talking about their fitness hobby. Some villagers will have the exact same personality and hobby from each other, thus making them less unique. I do believe they can bring back othet hobbies, too. Like eating, fishing, bug-catching, gardening, etc. If some villagers were granted those hobbies (if they ever make it back in NH), it would make the villagers a little more unique too. Either way, I hope Nintendo finds a way around that so we get back the old feelings from the first games.
Tl;dr: Basically I'm saying if we add new hobbies and correlate them with the personalities, it can make villagers somewhat more unique.

I had some issues with seeing people behaving like that in New Leaf, but it's gotten 1000× worse.
In ACNL I had Rocket move into my town, and I just adored her and enjoyed the different conversations I had with her. Then I found out how awful the fandom was about gorilla villagers. It was heartbreaking to see all the nasty comments or hear them talking about how they loved to bully ugly characters. So I created a second town on a used copy of the game to create a gorilla sanctuary.
I'll give any villager a chance in my towns, and I've discovered that I love many of the so-called "ugly" ones best of all. They seem to have such lively and endearing animations and facial expressions. Rasher, Moose, and Cesar are some of my favorite villagers ever now. They just warm my heart. I would love to have Hazel in my town too. My friend has her, and she's great.

Honestly thought this was another video picking at the “efficiency” of AC but then you said villagers are the problem and I was like YESSSSS. I started on New Leaf and played bits of Population and City Folk and the contrast is striking. I used to talk everyday to my fav villager Prince in NL and I tried to do the same in NH but honestly I barely speak to anyone in NH anymore. I have Prince and I think he’s adorable but he’s really just a cardboard cut out of his former self. BRING OUR BOYS BACK.

I think the dialogue really needs work and that says something since I haven’t been very active with the animal crossing game until new horizons so I’m not very familiar with the dialogue in the game. The personality’s really need work as if you have 2 of the same personality villagers on your island, they can say the exact same thing! Nintendo please fix this!!!!

as a person who's first game is new horizons even i can tell that the villagers are bland. it feels like they're all carbon copies of one another with one key thing they focus on to make their personalities "different." (ex. lazy = me like bug, cranky = me old, snooty = me fancy)

The *second* biggest problem with animal crossing is the island representatives. When you are the secondary player on the switch, there are limitations of what you can do, like for example, you cannot build bridges or inclines, you can’t help build a shop, you cannot demolish some thing, etc. But the first player on the switch is different. The first player has no limitations in the game. They can almost do anything which isn’t fair to the secondary player. I am the second player on the Nintendo Switch that my sister owns and I have to hop onto my sister’s account to build bridges, help build shops, etc (my sister doesn’t play New Horizons that often.) All I want is Nintendo to fix this issue which has made me go bonkers! I also want island representative in my account as well so I can help build different shops, build bridges, move certain buildings, etc. Not just collect bugs, catch fish, pick up fruit, collect Nookmiles, etc. So if Nintendo comes across this video, looks in the comments and finds this then *probably* they’ll fix this problem! Also I can’t get another switch because my sister says no.

One of my new favorites is Graham, my friend didn’t like him and after he left her village he ended up coming to my village, while she hates Graham because of the little black eyes and his blue glasses I think he’s pretty cute and interesting because of the bubblegum posters he has hidden near the roof. But I will agree it seems like there’s no interactions or new dialogue options it’s all the same. You can’t do any activists really with your villagers. It feels like a fashion contest all most where everyone wants the cutest stuffed animal they feel like little place holders with no personality’s. That’s actually the same reason why I stoped playing poker camp a month after I downloaded it because the game felt empty ever “villager” asked had me going on the same fetch quest to get them a seashell if it was seashell week. There was no interesting dialogue, no reluctance from a grumpy villager nothing not even any favorite things or dislikes where the villagers will refuse a gift if they hate sweaters.

I know the beginning is long as I am discussing why I made this video, criticism within gaming communities, and the Animal Crossing Community itself. I am sorry this is a long intro and I will work on this for future videos. If you would like to skip this and get straight o the point of the video, I believe that skipping to 4:55
I hope this helps anyone who just wants to get to the "Problem" with Animal Crossing New Horizons. Also another thing I have heard and will be changing is the blurry screens. I do that as filler for the most part. However, I have seen that it has been hurting peoples eyes and making them dizzy so I will be removing it for future videos. I love the music in NH, very chilling and tropical, which fits with the island theme, I absolutely hated the music in NL, it tried too many genres and was lousy in my opinion, back then I was very disappointed with the change from City Folk, but then again I'm also a person who finds Judy absolutely hideous so I think they're just unpopular opinions

@@ihavea1tbshotahentaifolder431 I agree with that to a degree. I guess it matches the whole tropical island theme but it's all too similar and not really the same chill, sparse instrumentals we used to have.
On another note I hate that stupid synthesizer that's the lead of every single song. Every song feels like it uses the same 4 instruments and the main motif for new horizons pops up waaaay too often. It's too repetitive and too loud and just doesn't feel like Animal Crossing.
