In a recent interview, Floor said that the opera part could not sound too thin, but also not too full, so that it would not sound "pretentious". So, it seems to me that what you are hearing in her high range is not lack of confidence, but rather the kind of sound that they agreed upon, so that it would not sound "pretentious". (Although one can hardly see Floor sounding pretentious at all, but that's another matter). Thanks, great reaction!
Yup, she did an excellent and very accurate job in that part. The intensity, the feeling the dramatic way the vibrato everything was perfect. She said that it was not the idea to put forced and heavy vibratos or just sing those notes. It was beyond that. She she proved she's an amazing artist.
I'm SO glad she decided to do that. Heavy, all-over-the-place-vibrato opera is the stuff of ridicule in most music circles that aren't already full of opera fanatics. It's a game of diminishing returns when trying to mix opera with other genres, and Floor knows right where the sweet spot is.
She said that she didn't want to sing the last part so powerfully, instead she wanted it to feel suitable for the lyrics. So a bit more fragile and melancholic.

You could also translate it different. Praise be to you, to the stars. Meaning send off to the stars like a cryout and as a honor, what also really happened with his ashes and in an urn inscripted with the poem from Shakespear. Send to the moon where he can see every day the upcoming of our beautiful earth.

Take your hearing aids out the batteries are flat. What you need to understand id Nightwish songs range from folk, classical to metal and Floor sings to the music. One of the worse Nightwish reactors.
This album is molded around Floor's and Kai's palitra and it's very different. That shows the range of Tuomas as a musician and we can only give him credit for this! I hope they go even harder to use the full drummer genius that Kai is. Floor is everything Nightwish should have been and everything Nightwish is in a nutshell so she can probably play Kai's darker and explosive play too :)
I have a tiny bit of vocal training in college chamber choir, and my first reaction when hearing this song's opening part is...Tuomas why do you have to trouble Floor like this? Not only the melody is made to instrument (notice it exactly same with the instrumental intro) and not for singing, but sang anyway, but the lyrics also are very hard to sing, so many consonant clusters, diphthongs, and weird placements of accents against the melody flow...For Floor being able to pull this off is an accomplishment in and of itself.
Yeah, it does, in fact, not sound written for a voice at all, you just put down in words what I've been thinking without being able to fully articulate it. Those types of melodies are definitely a recurring theme through the whole album!
@@maxmattt I don't think that very many others have figured this out either! Johanna has a really unique bright voice and recognizable vibrato so it was easy to hear her voice, especially when I've heard her singing for almost 15 years.

Please don’t take my comment the wrong way as I have not taken your comments the wrong way. What so many RUclips reactors who claim to be professional singers or vocal coaches don’t understand is Floor is NOT an opera singer. She’s a metal singer, who because of some training and God-given talent, is able to sing in this style. She has said numerous times she does not prefer to sing this way as it does not really interest her. She’s a metal head who’s the lead singer of a band which requires from time-to-time to sing opera. With that said, I’m 100% certain if Floor ever decided to put in some serious effort into training her voice to sing opera, she’d nail it like she nails everything else she sings.
Yeah, I agree 100% with this! She is not an opera singer, and it's absolutely incredible she can pull off something like that, honestly. Hands down to her, I've heard a ton of classical singers who don't get it nearly as beautiful as she was able to do here. It's almost seamless and seriously, all my respects to her for accepting that challenge and clearly rocking it! I think Floor loves challenges, and she likes to perfect herself, and it's in that mindset that I'm pointing out those things. I hear where this could be going next, but it doesn't mean what she did is not good enough. On the contrary, I think she's good enough that she could push it even further. She did impress me a lot with this. I can hear that sort of thing because I've studied it for years and years, and I've heard a LOT of classical singers and have been working with them on productions. Opera is a very competitive field and the standards for soprano singers are extremely high. What I'm thinking here is that Floor is not yet sounding comfortable enough to me that I feel she could pull off a full opera performance as the soprano lead and not completely tire herself out in the process, but within the context of this music, it really only matters if you're interested in knowing that. If she decided to fully go in that direction though, she would be absolutely unstoppable, I'm 100% convinced she would quickly become just as good as the big opera stars. ❤️😎
tell that to all the Floor fans who claim she's as amazing in "opera" as she is in metal. She's just adequate, with one year of training. They seem to think she's ready for The Met, but she can't even outdo Tarja in the genre. She's an amazing , AMAZING contemporary singer, who can do multiple sounds, tones, and tricks with her voice. She can multiple contemporary genres, and is decent at classical singer. I LOVE Floor's voice, but her fans putting down others in her favor and pretending she's even more than she is, has managed to turn me off her and Nightwish recently. I didn't think that was possible. I only came here to see what Elvann would say about the new music, as I hold her up highly as a vocal coach. The only reason I'm saying all this is cause Floor fans want to have their cake and eat it too. On one hand, its "she's better than your fave , cause she can sing this AND classical, just as well as your well trained classical singer! Nyah nyah nyah!", then on the other hand, it becomes "give her a break! She only did one year of training! She's NOT a classical singer! Wah!". Which is it? Is she a classical expert or not? It seems her fans keep changing their stance in order to win an argument. Its obnoxious.
@@Rosannasfriend I think people make the mistake in confusing the terms "Opera" and "Classical" singing. They are not the same thing. She possesses excellent classical techniques when we talk about control and breath support and has the insane ease of moving from head to mix to chest voice in a split second. That is what she uses for all styles that she sings. Opera is another matter and to be frank you cannot do this on a professional level in a 90 minute concert either (eh, no not even Tarja is on that level).

According to 'the Charismatic Voice ' there was nothing wrong with the last notes sung by Floor. She did it with control, power and purity of voice. The Goddess spent 13 years of her life perfecting her voice. Uncertain of her high notes... I think not Ps Elizabeth is a renowned opera singer...
A little bit annoyed by her reaction, I suppose. If you are a qualified opera singer you probably have to say something... Floor is floorless. I heared a professional opera singer respond and said that he wished that opera singers just like Floor does, because of her more organic approach of singing. Let it be...😉
Great reaction, and one I was looking forward to. I think there are two reasons her operatic lows sound more comfortable than her highs. First is that she seems to have started working on operatic technique for the Decades tour and Beste Zangers in her mixed voice first and then later started working on her higher operatic singing the same way to try and create more backspacing and use more vibrato compared to the head voice operatic vocals she used to do. I think she still finds it easier in mixed voice or chest voice than head voice as of yet, but that with some more time and practice she'll get even more comfortable with these technique changes in head voice. Second is that Tuomas was apparently very particular about the balance between lightness and heaviness he wanted in this section and Floor mentioned in some interviews that she really had to work to strike the balance he wanted in this section. The tension may come from her trying to hold onto that particular balance. Finally, enjoyed your analysis of technically demanding this song is on a vocalist!

I'm always waiting for your reactions because you're one of the most insightful in the reactionsphere :) And I love Floor's lower register as well, it's so gorgeous! I noticed some tension on her higher parts but to me it sounded like a dramatic effect? I don't know if it makes any sense, but this tension translated to me as emotion. I'm not saying it was intentional, but knowing a bit about Tuomas and Floor the probability is high. They always seem to aim for a result that better conveys the feelings they want to transmit. And they succeeded because this last part really made me cry! Thanks for the video! Can't wait to see what you have to say about the other songs!
The operatic part is like a memorial service. I don't think it was meant to be very powerful all the time. It's like crying at the funeral but still majestic, which is perfect for the song. I encourage you to read about Eugene Merle Shoemaker. The key information is what happened after he had passed away and what was inscribed on Shoemaker's memorial capsule. I might as well tell you this: He is the only person whose remains have been placed on any celestial body outside Earth. Thank you. I like that you keep doing these videos and I also like your music and covers versions.
Another great reaction. This is undoubtedly my favorite song on the album. Your reaction when to "on the stellar sea, cut in little stars," your smile, that was my exact reaction, too. Such wonderful lyrics, and yes, the contrast between dreamy, harmonically poetic, to powerful fits so well, and is so typical Nightwish.
I heard (as a rumour) that they wanted to play the whole 'human' part of the album on the tour + some other classics. So they should play this live, too.

The last part is as awesome as it can get. In fact as I was listening the CD on the background for the first time, while I was working, at that part I just stopped whatever I was doing and I felt stunned for some seconds.

If you knew the history of Eugine Shoemaker (The Godfather of modern Geoastronomy (geology of space)), this song would be so much more emotional. Though his specialty were space rocks found on Earth, his true obsession was the moon, but NASA found his health unfit to go on any missions. He said that never being able to hit the rocks on the moon with his own hammer was his biggest tragedy. But, He and his wife had a huge love of space rocks and specialized in comets and astroids, discovering THOUSANDS and studying the ones on Earth for almost 5 decades!... Years after his tragic death in a car crash, his wife and one of his students convinced NASA to send his ashes (along with that verse from Romeo and Juliet) to the moon... The song speaks as though he is an entity of the moon and his love of space. After finding all this out, the operatic part and the finale of the song always makes me cry!!!

The ending vocals remind me a little bit of late renaissance choral music. The thin, silvery high notes almost feel madrigalian to me. Obviously there’s a lot of opera in there. But the mixture of the two styles renders a really unique and beautiful result.
I watch these reaction videos to get a genuine reaction. Critique, analysis, all that stuff. I want exactly that. Especially from someone like you who knows what they're talking about.
I didn't know Floor was the one singing the laudato si / ad astra part, I thought it was just a singer from the choir who made it, and... WOW. It's beyond extraordinary. Each time I hear this song it gets more and more incredible.
Great reaction and good observations. I heard Floor say in an interview that she doesn't think of operatic style as her specialty; it's just something she can do, so Tuomas takes advantage of it. Based on that, she may well feel less comfortable singing in that range. In that same interview, she also said that this music was incredibly difficult and required a LOT of rehearsal to get it right. It's hard to see how they will pull this off live, but, hey, it's Nightwish!
I'm not a singer don't know the first thing about it but the first part did sound impressive and difficult.. I can hear the quick note switches and it is not only technical, it sounds beautiful too. Great video!!

For some reason I feel like she sang that last part that way on purpose, hearing back "lacrimosa" I can feel in both songs the pain and melancholy, so I love how Floor sang it, perfect or not cause is full of emotion😃💕

Staccato singing is a pain in the ass. I sang in choir for about 8 years. Let along the volume and note changes. I heard this and immediately thought this would be damn hard to sing. Then the background track makes being in perfect time with the music an absolute must.
Floor did say it took several takes to get that end part right with the right feel for the song, so it probably is true that she had to really challenge herself to get there and wouldn't be surprising if its not quite as strong. I agree, she sounds so comfortable and powerful when it comes down on that "si" note.

The first notes of "Music" by Floor made me grin in disbelief. And then the same theme kinda continues in "Shoemaker" (and actually in "Noise" too to lesser extent). I'm not a professional singer, but currently in a band where the main composer has a tendency to put a lot of progressive vibes into his songs and also the same kind of melody "jumps" that we hear here. But nothing even close to this extreme. I would have had a really hard time to get anything done with these songs.
She is doing a stylistic choice not to go over the top and full, pure opera as to keep it somewhat connected to the rest...but you'll get this the more you'll listen to her.
Not opera. She isn't using operatic vowel modification, nor is she using operatic overblown vibrato - she is actually phrasing and modulating her vibrato. This is much better than opera. And congratulations to them for using Troy rather than Marko as main accompaniment. His voice suits this song better.
@Elvann - the instrument you're hearing in the beginning is actually Dulcimer - it's even mentioned in the song. It's a very old instrument with a very interesting sound. It sounds very similar to mandolin.

not designed to be digested on a single listen most bands at this stage sell out, nightwish go all in. its not an immediate grabber but being a proghead, i never judge an album after one listen. 1st, those that wanted a floor album got one but not the floor they expected. rather than high note belters, she scores a 10 on the vocal gymnastics. if robert fripp could sing, he would sing like floor on human nature. while the prior album had a very under stated production that it took a live performance to bring out the heat, this album has the heat that i have doubts if they can pull this off live. the other notice improvement from endless forms was that they unleashed the beast behind the skins, kai hahto. if original drummer brought a john bonham boom, kai brings a bill bruford sophistication. some weird time sigs here and some extra heavy percussion as well. the second disc is more like two steps from hell than anything. some of it is lovely, some of it is just ok. a brave attempt by a band that has decided not to cash in but challenge its rabid army. bully for them.

This is such a beautiful song it really shows Floor's Skill as singer very well my favorite part is the Operatic ending. I really appreciate your detailed musical analysis I may not understand everything you are talking about as a laymen but I still find it interesting great reaction.
The instrument in the beginning is a harpsichord, I think -- it's an instrument that was used heavily in Europe and the American colonies in the 1700s and early 1800s. Edit: I'm not a "professional" musician by any means -- but I _did_ play a tuba in high school. And I know that some bass lines are actually difficult -- for example, Aretha Franklin's song "R-E-S-P-E-C-T." Hearing this rhythm by Floor? Gives me goosebumps -- because not only can I hum the rhythm, I was able to do so after only hearing it the first time. And Elvann, you are correct: Its not an easy rhythm to get down. I'm guessing, vocally, it would take some work to not only get the rhythm down, but also the pitches for all the notes, _while in rhythm._ That being said, it would also probably be just as hard playing it on keys or even guitar. It's why I love Nightwish so much: Because Tuomas feeds that inherent analytical component of music that is like a drug for me -- it not only is something I crave, but it keeps my mind active. Keeps my mind focused.

I always look forward to your Nightwish reactions. I watch a lot of different reactions for Nightwish songs and I’m seeing a lot of people saying how disappointing this album is with Floor’s vocals. They say that it doesn’t stand out or have the goosebumps moments that all the live videos of past. At first listen I had a brief moment of thinking the same but that view changed quickly. With most of the vocals on this album Tuomas paying a lot of attention to the phrasing of the lyrics and it is definitely very difficult and can see/hear what he was trying to accomplish on this album. Although some tracks (musically) kept in line with the typical Nightwish people expect: Most of it was different and epically creative. The more. I listen to them the more I like and appreciate what Tuomas’s vision was for this album. I very much look forward to seeing more reactions from you. Stay safe and healthy during this time. ❤️
Hello Elvann, I really love your reaction to this gorgeous song! In my opinion the whole album is an amazing masterpiece, but when I had to pick out one piece, it would be Shoemaker! I agree with you, Floor's vocals here are absolutly gorgeous, and not only in the operatic part! Toumas really challenged her, and she accepted the challenge, as well as everyone in the band! It's always a pleasure to hear your precise analysis, I learn everytime something new from your videos! Can't wait for the next reaction, I bet you will have a lot of joy also with all the other songs:-)
With this one, Shoemaker was about as opera as Nightwish has gotten in a long time! This one was a trip from beginning to end. It still got some heavy riffs but melodic parts. Troy's singing in this one was great too and followed a similar step to Floor's almost. But when that ending hit me... I wanted to cry so bad. I have not heard singing like that since Tarja left!
Floor commented on singing that last operatic bit of this song and she she mentioned that she still tried to balance the full operatic non-mixed sort of singing with lighter tone. The only time I heard her do full operatic the whole way through is the Puccini aria. She doesn't really love the classical (bel canto) sort of style that much (as much as you at least Elvann! ;-)
Hello again Elvann. I read the comments and I always start down there. I was saddened by the comments. I see your comments and many of them you praise the changes that Floor makes live and that Floor's vocals are more appropriate. I never felt a criticism of you like an attack on Floor or an attempt in between the lines to favor Tarja. I just think Floor thinks outside the box and musicians have a hard time understanding that (It seems to me that Floor has different musical values from the trivial). I felt like saying that because you are always kind and adorable. Continue your way. Don't change anything. Take care, hug.

I read a lot of comments from people pointing out stuff about instruments and types of singing that enrich your analysis. Yes, thank you Elvann for pointing out the difficulty of the technical singing Floor is doing. A lot of reactions I have seen think this is no big deal and want some big belting notes or "singing high" for it to be challenging for Floor.
@@ceithern i know several semi pro musicians that say what's sounds hard to an untrained listener, is often easy and that it looks great but not a big deal. there are some passages where the fan is under whelmed but the musician jaw drops to the floor.

The instrument you're hearing at the start was a hammered dulcimer I think. I just love string instruments that are played by little hammers or similar things hitting the strings to produce a sound. They're fantastic :D

Great reaction to this great song. Floor did a great job here. Although she is not an opera singer ( and she had no ambition to become one she stated in the past) she did quite well that last part.
Second reaction on new album seen. Very accurate on both. She is more comfortable in a lower range, and a lot of this album has her in her upper ranges. The way it is written, and she has done well given that. "Pretentious"? Interesting. Maybe. Obviously this wasn't written to be the Floor show this time around for whatever reasons.
You need to get to know floor more.she picks what she wants to suit the moment…and how many singers do you know who have sang live in front of 60 000 plus with near perfect pitch and the power ❤
I understand Floor went 'how am I going to sing this?' several times when Tuomas shared his compositions for this album with her 😀. And of course then figured it out and nailed it.
For one of the songs everyone else was pleased for what she recorded in the studio but she was not but on the way home she figured out how it should be done and re-sung it at home studio. Which then ended up to the track.
Ha ha! You just can't help yourself for being so wonderful. This wasn't my biggest favorite at first. It has unusual and a little too difficult structure for a simple man like me, but even I can say that it must be very hard to sing. The operatic ending is phenomenal, of course. And luckily I'm liking it much more now after some listening. Great analysis and thank you!

I myself love the operatic part. Talking about operatic, what do you think of Tarja's operatic vocals? I still prefer Floor's operatic vocals than Tarja's.
Mhhmm the topic of Tarja is in fact one I haven't fully tackled because I've never made a reaction of her vocals. I think in her latest records she's taken on a more pop approach and I'm not sure I like it in her voice as much, but I think it's fine. As an opera singer, she can clearly sing it and she sounds more comfortable, but she's also kind of doing it in her own style in a way that makes it really hard to judge. On operatic standards, what I've heard from her is not really in the style, she uses some of her own stylistic habits which makes it not sound very comparable to a professional opera singer. I think Floor sounds closer to it than Tarja. As for my own opinion, I think I like the kind of tone Floor is going for better, she sounds warmer, more expressive and dynamic to me. Tarja has sometimes a more metallic texture maybe. But, I love them both equally for each their own reasons. I can't really make a decision if you ask me to choose which of them I prefer. 🤔

Am I the only one that is reminded of Maiden’s ‘Hallowed Be Thy Name’ vocally? Lots of lyrics delivered in a staccato manner that requires outstanding breath control.
The phrasing (and cutting up the syllables) is indeed insanely technical because it goes against the natural flow of speaking or singing a sentence. From what I understood is that Tuomas said that this song won't be performed live, which makes total sense that would be insane to be able to reproduce that consistently in a live performance.
I really hope the fans begging for Shoemaker to be played live convinces them to try. Considering the ease with which Floor crushed How's the Heart live for the Planet Rock live acoustic performance already, I believe she'd be able to pull Shoemaker off live.
It does make total sense actually!!! I wish they actually do it tho!!! But I could completely understand. If it's really straining and hard for Floor, then it might be better she takes care of herself and don't tire her voice for no reason!

In a recent interview, Floor said that the opera part could not sound too thin, but also not too full, so that it would not sound "pretentious". So, it seems to me that what you are hearing in her high range is not lack of confidence, but rather the kind of sound that they agreed upon, so that it would not sound "pretentious". Yup, she did an excellent and very accurate job in that part. The intensity, the feeling the dramatic way the vibrato everything was perfect. She said that it was not the idea to put forced and heavy vibratos or just sing those notes. It was beyond that. She she proved she's an amazing artist.

I'm SO glad she decided to do that. Heavy, all-over-the-place-vibrato opera is the stuff of ridicule in most music circles that aren't already full of opera fanatics. It's a game of diminishing returns when trying to mix opera with other genres, and Floor knows right where the sweet spot is.
She said that she didn't want to sing the last part so powerfully, instead she wanted it to feel suitable for the lyrics. So a bit more fragile and melancholic.

Meaning send off to the stars like a cryout and as a honor, what also really happened with his ashes and in an urn inscripted with the poem from Shakespear. Take your hearing aids out the batteries are flat. What you need to understand id Nightwish songs range from folk, classical to metal and Floor sings to the music.
One of the worse Nightwish reactors.
The song is about a geologist/astronomer who studied the effects of meteor impacts on the Moon and Earth.
This album is molded around Floor's and Kai's palitra
and it's very different. That shows the range of Tuomas as a musician and we can only give him credit for this! I hope they go even harder to use the full drummer genius that Kai is. Floor is everything Nightwish should have been and everything Nightwish is in a nutshell so she can probably play Kai's darker and explosive play too :)
I have a tiny bit of vocal training in college chamber choir, and my first reaction when hearing this song's opening part is...Tuomas why do you have to trouble Floor like this? Not only the melody is made to instrument (notice it exactly same with the instrumental intro) and not for singing, but sang anyway, but the lyrics also are very hard to sing, so many consonant clusters, diphthongs, and weird placements of accents against the melody flow...For Floor being able to pull this off is an accomplishment in and of itself.
Also I believe in "Pan" she has a little bit of operatic voices in lower register, you might wanna check it out!

Yeah, it does, in fact, not sound written for a voice at all, you just put down in words what I've been thinking without being able to fully articulate it. Those types of melodies are definitely a recurring theme through the whole album!

Please don’t take my comment the wrong way as I have not taken your comments the wrong way. What so many RUclips reactors who claim to be professional singers or vocal coaches don’t understand is Floor is NOT an opera singer. She’s a metal singer, who because of some training and God-given talent, is able to sing in this style. She has said numerous times she does not prefer to sing this way as it does not really interest her. She’s a metal head who’s the lead singer of a band which requires from time-to-time to sing opera. With that said, I’m 100% certain if Floor ever decided to put in some serious effort into training her voice to sing opera, she’d nail it like she nails everything else she sings.
Yeah, I agree 100% with this! She is not an opera singer, and it's absolutely incredible she can pull off something like that, honestly. Hands down to her, I've heard a ton of classical singers who don't get it nearly as beautiful as she was able to do here. It's almost seamless and seriously, all my respects to her for accepting that challenge and clearly rocking it!
I think Floor loves challenges, and she likes to perfect herself, and it's in that mindset that I'm pointing out those things. I hear where this could be going next, but it doesn't mean what she did is not good enough. On the contrary, I think she's good enough that she could push it even further.
She did impress me a lot with this. I can hear that sort of thing because I've studied it for years and years, and I've heard a LOT of classical singers and have been working with them on productions. Opera is a very competitive field and the standards for soprano singers are extremely high. What I'm thinking here is that Floor is not yet sounding comfortable enough to me that I feel she could pull off a full opera performance as the soprano lead and not completely tire herself out in the process, but within the context of this music, it really only matters if you're interested in knowing that.
If she decided to fully go in that direction though, she would be absolutely unstoppable, I'm 100% convinced she would quickly become just as good as the big opera stars. ❤️😎
tell that to all the Floor fans who claim she's as amazing in "opera" as she is in metal. She's just adequate, with one year of training. They seem to think she's ready for The Met, but she can't even outdo Tarja in the genre. She's an amazing , AMAZING contemporary singer, who can do multiple sounds, tones, and tricks with her voice. She can multiple contemporary genres, and is decent at classical singer. I LOVE Floor's voice, but her fans putting down others in her favor and pretending she's even more than she is, has managed to turn me off her and Nightwish recently. I didn't think that was possible. I only came here to see what Elvann would say about the new music, as I hold her up highly as a vocal coach.
The only reason I'm saying all this is cause Floor fans want to have their cake and eat it too. On one hand, its "she's better than your fave , cause she can sing this AND classical, just as well as your well trained classical singer! Nyah nyah nyah!", then on the other hand, it becomes "give her a break! She only did one year of training! She's NOT a classical singer! Wah!". Which is it? Is she a classical expert or not? She possesses excellent classical techniques when we talk about control and breath support and has the insane ease of moving from head to mix to chest voice in a split second. That is what she uses for all styles that she sings. Opera is another matter and to be frank you cannot do this on a professional level in a 90 minute concert either (eh, no not even Tarja is on that level).

I heared a professional opera singer respond and said that he wished that opera singers just like Floor does, because of her more organic approach of singing. Let it be...😉
Great reaction, and one I was looking forward to. I think there are two reasons her operatic lows sound more comfortable than her highs. First is that she seems to have started working on operatic technique for the Decades tour and Beste Zangers in her mixed voice first and then later started working on her higher operatic singing the same way to try and create more backspacing and use more vibrato compared to the head voice operatic vocals she used to do. I think she still finds it easier in mixed voice or chest voice than head voice as of yet, but that with some more time and practice she'll get even more comfortable with these technique changes in head voice.
Second is that Tuomas was apparently very particular about the balance between lightness and heaviness he wanted in this section and Floor mentioned in some interviews that she really had to work to strike the balance he wanted in this section. The tension may come from her trying to hold onto that particular balance.
Finally, enjoyed your analysis of technically demanding this song is on a vocalist!
I'm pretty sure the instrument in the opening is a hammered dulcimer. The word "dulcimer" even shows up in the lyrics to this song.

I'm always waiting for your reactions because you're one of the most insightful in the reactionsphere :) And I love Floor's lower register as well, it's so gorgeous! I noticed some tension on her higher parts but to me it sounded like a dramatic effect? I don't know if it makes any sense, but this tension translated to me as emotion. I'm not saying it was intentional, but knowing a bit about Tuomas and Floor the probability is high. They always seem to aim for a result that better conveys the feelings they want to transmit. And they succeeded because this last part really made me cry!

The operatic part is like a memorial service. I don't think it was meant to be very powerful all the time. It's like crying at the funeral but still majestic, which is perfect for the song. I encourage you to read about Eugene Merle Shoemaker. The key information is what happened after he had passed away and what was inscribed on Shoemaker's memorial capsule. I might as well tell you this: He is the only person whose remains have been placed on any celestial body outside Earth.

Another great reaction. This is undoubtedly my favorite song on the album. Your reaction when to "on the stellar sea, cut in little stars," your smile, that was my exact reaction, too. Such wonderful lyrics, and yes, the contrast between dreamy, harmonically poetic, to powerful fits so well, and is so typical Nightwish.

The last part is as awesome as it can get. In fact as I was listening the CD on the background for the first time, while I was working, at that part I just stopped whatever I was doing and I felt stunned for some seconds.

If you knew the history of Eugine Shoemaker (The Godfather of modern Geoastronomy (geology of space)), this song would be so much more emotional.
Though his specialty were space rocks found on Earth, his true obsession was the moon, but NASA found his health unfit to go on any missions. He said that never being able to hit the rocks on the moon with his own hammer was his biggest tragedy. But, He and his wife had a huge love of space rocks and specialized in comets and astroids, discovering THOUSANDS and studying the ones on Earth for almost 5 decades!...
Years after his tragic death in a car crash, his wife and one of his students convinced NASA to send his ashes (along with that verse from Romeo and Juliet) to the moon...
The song speaks as though he is an entity of the moon and his love of space.

The ending vocals remind me a little bit of late renaissance choral music. The thin, silvery high notes almost feel madrigalian to me. Obviously there’s a lot of opera in there. But the mixture of the two styles renders a really unique and beautiful result.

I didn't know Floor was the one singing the laudato si / ad astra part, I thought it was just a singer from the choir who made it, and... WOW. It's beyond extraordinary. Each time I hear this song it gets more and more incredible.

Great reaction and good observations. I heard Floor say in an interview that she doesn't think of operatic style as her specialty; it's just something she can do, so Tuomas takes advantage of it. Based on that, she may well feel less comfortable singing in that range. In that same interview, she also said that this music was incredibly difficult and required a LOT of rehearsal to get it right. It's hard to see how they will pull this off live, but, hey, it's Nightwish!
Floor in an interview said she didnt want that part to heavy opera or to thin,she had to work to get it where she wanted it.

Staccato singing is a pain in the ass. I sang in choir for about 8 years.
Let along the volume and note changes.
I heard this and immediately thought this would be damn hard to sing.
Then the background track makes being in perfect time with the music an absolute must.
Floor did say it took several takes to get that end part right with the right feel for the song, so it probably is true that she had to really challenge herself to get there and wouldn't be surprising if its not quite as strong. I agree, she sounds so comfortable and powerful when it comes down on that "si" note.

The first notes of "Music" by Floor made me grin in disbelief. And then the same theme kinda continues in "Shoemaker" (and actually in "Noise" too to lesser extent). I'm not a professional singer, but currently in a band where the main composer has a tendency to put a lot of progressive vibes into his songs and also the same kind of melody "jumps" that we hear here. But nothing even close to this extreme. I would have had a really hard time to get anything done with these songs.
She is doing a stylistic choice not to go over the top and full, pure opera as to keep it somewhat connected to the rest...but you'll get this the more you'll listen to her.

Not opera. She isn't using operatic vowel modification, nor is she using operatic overblown vibrato - she is actually phrasing and modulating her vibrato. This is much better than opera. And congratulations to them for using Troy rather than Marko as main accompaniment. His voice suits this song better.
@Elvann - the instrument you're hearing in the beginning is actually Dulcimer - it's even mentioned in the song. It's a very old instrument with a very interesting sound. It sounds very similar to mandolin.

not designed to be digested on a single listen
most bands at this stage sell out, nightwish go all in. its not an immediate grabber but being a proghead, i never judge an album after one listen. 1st, those that wanted a floor album got one but not the floor they expected. rather than high note belters, she scores a 10 on the vocal gymnastics. if robert fripp could sing, he would sing like floor on human nature. while the prior album had a very under stated production that it took a live performance to bring out the heat, this album has the heat that i have doubts if they can pull this off live. the other notice improvement from endless forms was that they unleashed the beast behind the skins, kai hahto. if original drummer brought a john bonham boom, kai brings a bill bruford sophistication. some weird time sigs here and some extra heavy percussion as well. the second disc is more like two steps from hell than anything. some of it is lovely, some of it is just ok. a brave attempt by a band that has decided not to cash in but challenge its rabid army. bully for them.

The instrument in the beginning is a harpsichord, I think -- it's an instrument that was used heavily in Europe and the American colonies in the 1700s and early 1800s.
Edit: I'm not a "professional" musician by any means -- but I _did_ play a tuba in high school. And I know that some bass lines are actually difficult -- for example, Aretha Franklin's song "R-E-S-P-E-C-T." Hearing this rhythm by Floor? Gives me goosebumps -- because not only can I hum the rhythm, I was able to do so after only hearing it the first time. And Elvann, you are correct: Its not an easy rhythm to get down. I'm guessing, vocally, it would take some work to not only get the rhythm down, but also the pitches for all the notes, _while in rhythm._
That being said, it would also probably be just as hard playing it on keys or even guitar. It's why I love Nightwish so much: Because Tuomas feeds that inherent analytical component of music that is like a drug for me -- it not only is something I crave, but it keeps my mind active. Keeps my mind focused.
That instrument you wondered about I am 98% sure is a hammered dulcimer.

I always look forward to your Nightwish reactions. I watch a lot of different reactions for Nightwish songs
and I’m seeing a lot of people saying how disappointing this album is with Floor’s vocals. They say that it doesn’t stand out or have the goosebumps moments that all the live videos of past. At first listen I had a brief moment of thinking the same but that view changed quickly. With most of the vocals on this album Tuomas paying a lot of attention to the phrasing of the lyrics and it is definitely very difficult and can see/hear what he was trying to accomplish on this album. Although some tracks (musically) kept in line with the typical Nightwish people expect: Most of it was different and epically creative. The more. I listen to them the more I like and appreciate what Tuomas’s vision was for this album. I very much look forward to seeing more reactions from you. Stay safe and healthy during this time. ❤️

Hello Elvann, I really love your reaction to this gorgeous song! In my opinion the whole album is an amazing masterpiece, but when I had to pick out one piece, it would be Shoemaker! I agree with you, Floor's vocals here are absolutly gorgeous, and not only in the operatic part! Toumas really challenged her, and she accepted the challenge, as well as everyone in the band!

With this one, Shoemaker was about as opera as Nightwish has gotten in a long time!
This one was a trip from beginning to end. It still got some heavy riffs but melodic parts. Troy's singing in this one was great too and followed a similar step to Floor's almost. But when that ending hit me... I wanted to cry so bad. I have not heard singing like that since Tarja left!
Floor commented on singing that last operatic bit of this song and she she mentioned that she still tried to balance the full operatic non-mixed sort of singing with lighter tone. The only time I heard her do full operatic the whole way through is the Puccini aria. She doesn't really love the classical (bel canto) sort of style that much (as much as you at least Elvann! ;-)

I was saddened by the comments. I see your comments and many of them you praise the changes that Floor makes live and that Floor's vocals are more appropriate.
I never felt a criticism of you like an attack on Floor or an attempt in between the lines to favor Tarja.
I just think Floor thinks outside the box and musicians have a hard time understanding that (It seems to me that Floor has different musical values from the trivial).

@@ElvannReacts Elvann do not be to hard on yourself! It comes with the territory. Some will always think that you critic Floor Jansen from the side of Tarja. For me that is not a problem in it's self we all have our favorites that touch us for different reasons. I think you do a great job in pointing out where Floor can adapt her singing with each song. You have your take on song's and that's why people come here to understand more. I read a lot of comments from people pointing out stuff about instruments and types of singing that enrich your analysis. This my two cents from a guy that knows nothing about singing and instruments.

Yes, thank you Elvann for pointing out the difficulty of the technical singing Floor is doing. A lot of reactions I have seen think this is no big deal and want some big belting notes or "singing high" for it to be challenging for Floor.
@@ceithern i know several semi pro musicians that say what's sounds hard to an untrained listener, is often easy and that it looks great but not a big deal. there are some passages where the fan is under whelmed but the musician jaw drops to the floor.
Ya, let's start a petition and send it to Tuomas to have Floor sing opera in her lower register more of the time. 😃 It really is beautiful to hear and enjoy. 😀 I suggest you listen to the interview where she describes trying to strike a balance between thin and full, in the tone of this section, plus the challenges in singing this song.

Loved the reaction! You shouldn't apologise for speaking your honest opinion about the technicalities in singing. You know what you're saying, because you're a talented musician, singer. It's your opinion and that's why we (viewers) watch your reactions. Also, I'd really like for you to check out How's the Heart acoustic version (Planet Rock) with Troy and Floor. I really enjoy the studio version of the song, but I personally like the acoustic more. Maybe you could do a reaction when you've heard the album version, idk :D

The instrument you're hearing at the start was a hammered dulcimer I think. I just love string instruments that are played by little hammers or similar things hitting the strings to produce a sound. They're fantastic :D

Second reaction on new album seen. Very accurate on both. She is more comfortable in a lower range, and a lot of this album has her in her upper ranges. The way it is written, and she has done well given that. "Pretentious"? Interesting. Maybe. Obviously this wasn't written to be the Floor show this time around for whatever reasons.
You need to get to know floor more.she picks what she wants to suit the moment…and how many singers do you know who have sang live in front of 60 000 plus with near perfect pitch and the power ❤

For one of the songs everyone else was pleased for what she recorded in the studio but she was not but on the way home she figured out how it should be done and re-sung it at home studio. Which then ended up to the track.

Ha ha! You just can't help yourself for being so wonderful. This wasn't my biggest favorite at first. It has unusual and a little too difficult structure for a simple man like me, but even I can say that it must be very hard to sing. The operatic ending is phenomenal, of course. And luckily I'm liking it much more now after some listening. Great analysis and thank you!

The result is really beautiful as a whole, but I do agree that she sounds more at ease in the lower notes compared to the higher registers. Anyways, Floor is really great singer!

I still prefer Floor's operatic vocals than Tarja's.
Mhhmm the topic of Tarja is in fact one I haven't fully tackled because I've never made a reaction of her vocals. I think in her latest records she's taken on a more pop approach and I'm not sure I like it in her voice as much, but I think it's fine. As an opera singer, she can clearly sing it and she sounds more comfortable, but she's also kind of doing it in her own style in a way that makes it really hard to judge. On operatic standards, what I've heard from her is not really in the style, she uses some of her own stylistic habits which makes it not sound very comparable to a professional opera singer.
I think Floor sounds closer to it than Tarja. As for my own opinion, I think I like the kind of tone Floor is going for better, she sounds warmer, more expressive and dynamic to me. Tarja has sometimes a more metallic texture maybe. But, I love them both equally for each their own reasons. I can't really make a decision if you ask me to choose which of them I prefer. 🤔

Am I the only one that is reminded of Maiden’s ‘Hallowed Be Thy Name’ vocally? Lots of lyrics delivered in a staccato manner that requires outstanding breath control.
The phrasing (and cutting up the syllables) is indeed insanely technical because it goes against the natural flow of speaking or singing a sentence. From what I understood is that Tuomas said that this song won't be performed live, which makes total sense that would be insane to be able to reproduce that consistently in a live performance.
I really hope the fans begging for Shoemaker to be played live convinces them to try. Considering the ease with which Floor crushed How's the Heart live for the Planet Rock live acoustic performance already, I believe she'd be able to pull Shoemaker off live.
It does make total sense actually!!! I wish they actually do it tho!!! But I could completely understand. If it's really straining and hard for Floor, then it might be better she takes care of herself and don't tire her voice for no reason!
