- Ever draw a blank when someone asks you to play something?
Well apparently Mike Moreno doesn't have that problem.
He's actually playing his own tune called "Forward and Back".
Here's the original video:

When you're so deep in the jazz rabbit hole that you've forgot what music is supposed to sound like
Basically where I'm at
Jazz is music
i cant put my finger on just why this so unmusical. its like an alien who has mastered an instrument but does not know human emotion
@@rited It doesn't sound unmusical to me.
@@coolcommenter2727 It's just all tension, you could swap around any of these phrases and i think itd feel exactly the same. its doing a lot, but kind of nothing, really. I do enjoy a lot of avant garde music, i just saw Okkyung Lee and John Butcher live which was way out there - but even in its most insane dissonant moments there was some kind of energy and emotion being displayed. this is just super flat and inconsequential. but in that way i have to say its kind of remarkable. its quite unique at least, hence the alien comment
That's nowhere near how George Harrison played it.
It’s the instrumental version,silly.🤗
best comment
🤣🤣🤣
such an immensely underrated comment
Is it supposed to be? And check the description.
When you're trying to find chords you like
hahahhah
When you can't listen to non diatonic music
@@buckbreaker5185☝️🤓
@@buckbreaker5185 this stuff just makes me anxious, I wish I liked it, just nothing I can do about it I guess. 😐
@@buckbreaker5185this is diatonic, listen to the melody
I paid for all the notes... I'm going to use... ALL of the notes!
he played like every chord that exists
Every chords that don't exist.
"ok it's tuned"
He said “something” not “everything”
Best comment
Wow so weird this is also my go-to
Same but I play it on tuba.
@@BlakouttheMM too easy on the tuba i play it on a diatonic harmonica
@@NightWitchStudios Too easy, I play it on the Hurdy Gurdy and sometimes the bongos.
@@wingsoficarus1139 hardcore
@@wingsoficarus1139 too easy, I play it on the triangle
It's like he played the opening of 124 separate songs and they're all good
whats the matter Buttercup, don't know Wonderwall?
i’m gonna learn whatever this guys playing just to spite you
Sarcasm has left the chat
His Jazz is so ascended he makes the dissonant sound melodic.
Right? It's gorgeous.
I'm just impressed that he picks with his pinky finger.
doesnt even use the index...
Reminds me a bit of animals as leaders' clean tone songs from the firsts albums. Totally amazing!
Also has hints of AAL in it as well!
Aal stole their material from this guy
a fellow man of culture
@@solacedagony1234 wouldn't be surprised one bit. Those guys are still great musicians though
🤢🤢🤢
As someone who's played guitar for over 20 years i can confirm, he's playing a guitar.
It's true, he really is.
See that's where I got confused. Looked like a goose tuned down 3 semitones
@@disturbed157 No your thinking of a goose, this is a guitar, i checked 3 times to make sure.
I dunno, man.
I can also confirm he is one of the guitarists of all time.
This is exactly what should be done at parties when they demand you “play something”
😭😭😄😄
I think the best part about learning an instrument is that music is 10x more complicated to notate than it is to play. You can play some wacky shit and make it sound cool if you feel it through enough and if you were to notate it you would instantly shit yourself
crazy, it sounds like an electric piano
@@darrellikelle9588lol okay buddy. Mr Literal haha
Yeah why not
it does not.
I get what you mean, its about the notes he’s playing, reminiscent of jazz improv on a keyboard
Agree, sounds like a Rhodes a bit, I’m curious what this is
Yep. That was definitely something.
😂 most underrated Comment
It sounds like one of those "X is Giant Steps" videos
Truly one of the music pieces of all time
He played it so well I could almost hear the lyrics "Something in the way she moves..."
People are saying it's too much and at times yes, but when it works, he plays some incredible sequences.
hum that part to yourself then. oh wait you cant. because its not a song its random notes
@@itisinicktwrong try humming again
@@itisinickt0:36 to 1:06 was prettty incredible, and definitely musical
@@itisinickt are you serious? that refrain at 0:58 is totally beautiful and explorative. nothing about this is random if you understand rhythm and tonal center..
@@itisinickt bait
All jokes aside, as someone with no jazz experience my ear has always been able to follow a chord structure. And if you listen you can tell which notes he’s accentuating, it’s a very beautiful song.
Some beautiful lines here
No, it sounds like anus. It's just technical wankery. You wouldn't appreciate it if you weren't intellectualizing the music
This guy experiences reality in 5D
idk what everyone is hating for. these lines are insane and the harmony new
This is one of the most beautiful songs ive heard, right up there with Portrait of Tracy, or Lateralus.
I loved all that disonance, fanci sound, so unpredictable
This stuff makes me anxious
yeah maybe stick to maroon 5 buddy
@@hello-rq8kf Lmao
fascinating composition
Kinda reminds me of Mike Moreno.
I don’t see it
I'm sorry I just don't hear it, this sounds nothing like Mike Moreno.
Interesting, where did you get that idea?!
Moreno is such a monster, always LOVED his tone and approach
Oh God, this felt Eternal
I love Mike Moreno so much. I play a miserable imitation of him when I pick up the instrument.
0:56 actually sounds good tho
I'm obsessed with that main theme, it's such a beautiful progression! And there's a sneaky Giant Steps at 0:24 as well 😁
This rates higher up the Scoville scale than anything I have heard before.
Early Metheny meets Holdsworth
you nailed it
Early ears meets stupid comment.
WTF ? Get some ears dude !
@@anneonym7346 You could have just said "I disagree" lol calm down
@@zugrath16 Absolutly not ! Saying "i disagree" is a personal point of view. Nothing personal by saying that this Mike Moreno piece is not a sound of "early Metheny meets Holdsworth". It is not true, period. One needs "ears" to know that, otherwise it is right to develop ears to "get some ears". Little harsh but...
I once wrote a computer program that just played a heap of random notes.
It sounded exactly like this
He makes it look so easy.
this sound somewhat like what if radiohead's kid a was only clean guitar, i get that kind of vibe
Johnny Greenwood is definitely up this alley. He's a fan of contemporary music and has some great compositions himself, if you like that freaky angular shit.
@@enijize1234 im just glad i was no talking out of my ass there, i had a feeling there was some jonny greenwood essence there i felt
This sounds like my buddy groping for the chord thats actually diatonic to the key he'd like to be in
And here’s my new tune… “Sound Test”
beautiful!!
God that was beautiful.
Reminds me of a Captain Beefheart tune from the Ice Cream for Crow album. Awesome.
“Forward and Back” is the tune!
When you spend all of your skill points on dexterity only.
such a bad take LMAO
No way, full on int and wis
moreno is a beast
They put tabs in the video as if anyone who plays from tabs could even possibly dare to even try to reproduce this 😂
Good transcription.
angela "JAZZ IS STUPID!"
dwight "jazz IS stupid"
angela "JUST PLAY THE RIGHT NOTES!"
dwight *nods in agreement*
Reminds me of some of the Leo Brouwer Estudios Sencillos - groovy~!
This guy knows.
“Play EVERYTHING”
“Uh sure”
"Bravo. Alright, Bobby."
georgia?
Beautiful
Amazing!
Well that’s lovely
Feel that tension?! Great stuff!
Blessed 🙏🙏
Hello and welcome to this weeks episode of: "is it jazz or is it math rock"
He played more notes in one minute twenty-six seconds than I've played over the last 30 years.
stairway to heaven would have done the job
It alternates between amazing and horrendous.
my guy played everything
bro waited his whole life for this moment
"Play something! 😃"
"umm 🤭, sure 😬"
Wow what the fuck, that was absolutely awesome!!!
The best musicians describe Nature. Nature is not always pretty or nice. Nature doesn't play to your rules. It does what it wants, and you're just a small part of it. Mike described Nature in what he played here, and it's astonishingly beautiful.
Oh hey it's Bright Size Life
My brain can't figure out if this is great or the worst noise I've heard in my life
Now THAT’S JAZZ ! I think…
That is so impressive!
Some difficult key changes and modal interchange.
So GOOD
That's beautiful
and george had the guts to say that paul's bassline was way too busy...
New Animals As Leaders sounding good
Ah, yes, technically music - the best kind of music!
...why my noodling never sound like that😅😅😮
This is a Mike Moreno tune called "Forward and Back" from his album "Between the Lines". Not noodling.
Skill issue
User error there buddy boy
@@Sals37 Hey, turn arround, it flew over and went that way...
You don't have enough brain damage yet
dude used his pinky instead of his index, he was holding a pick the whole time
DAMN
Oh wow.. this hit me with a wave of motivation.. absolutely beautiful abstract chords. Reminds me of Mancuso and Holdsworth. Thank you for the upload!
Clearly Hatfield and the North inspired ! Beautiful.
Sure is something.
This one's called "farting about".
So cool
my that tone is nice
When you're tired and you just noodle the night away.
holy fuck.
This is so reminiscent of some of Leo Brouwer's pieces to me
🔥🔥🔥
I dunno why but i'm getting some slight Kurt Rosenwinkel vibes from this.
Reminds me of John Stowell
Oh look, someone transcribed a random note generator
What are you on about? This is actually really beautiful
❤
This playing reminds me of Victor Villareal's guitarwork
Some parts of this sound very good, but for the most part this piece makes me feel like something is very wrong. If that's the goal, then mission accomplished.
wow, at first I thought it was a funny video with some random overdubbed silly guitar chords. Then, I noticed it was the real sound💀
Now I can't play anything, sure.
Wow
