It is so unfair to compare dentistry to medicine, since medicine is the mom. Dentistry is a a big part of medicine, that’s why it got it’s own schools, and they’re doctors whether you like it or not . Because they learn almost the same subject as physicians like anatomy, physiology, biochemistry etc ..., all medical professions are important . In Arabic dentist means = doctor of teeth , love you dentists.
Its misleading to compare it to medicine, when you realize only 10% follow evidenced based practices (no joke, google it). Its borderline quackery with very little oversight or regulation. Meanwhile medical is entirely evidenced based and heavily regulated. Its near impossible to have your license pulled short of actually killing someone. (which does happen a lot more than some might think)

No doctor will ever tell you that a dentist is not a real doctor. The first two years of Dental School is the exact same first two years of a school where someone is trying to become a doctor. We have the same biology, same chemistry, same math same everything if you look at the acronym DMD, take a guess at what the MD stands for we simply specialize in oral health. I spent many years working in the oral maxilla facial surgery department at Balboa Medical Center in San Diego California. You cannot perform cranial and facial reconstructive surgeries if you are not a doctor.
It's really ridiculous why people fail to understand what does the term doctor (related to health and treatment) mean!!!
A doctor is a person who treats your disease. Disease means When u r not at ease....it's so simple.
Now Dentistry is a specialty for your mouth (not only teeth )which is a very important part of your body. A Dentist or Dental Surgeon..treats oral diseases right from cavities to major cyts and tumors TMJ deformities ,pre cancerous lesions and also carcinoma (require specialty in oral and maxillofacial surgery which is done as post graduation after completing basic dental degree just like a cardiac surgeon does after his basic medical school).
People who think Dentists are not Doctors are really stupid because they don't consider their mouth as a part of their body. Mouth from where actually digestion starts, from where u chew, u communicate, partially breathe, u have taste sensation and many more important things.
Just imagine your body without your mouth.
And moreover Dental problems and infections can lead to many other health related issues right from affecting child birth causing preterm low birth weight babies to infertility to cardiac diseases. Patient may even landup in serious situation like space infections which may lead to sudden death.
The only thing why it is taught seperatly because more no of specialist doctors are needed of this specific specialty as Dental problems are the most common problems that everyone in their life face, and that's y it has evolved to such great extent.
Be thankful to your dentist because it's their presence which makes u feel relaxed whenever u have any oral problems or diseases.

Both dentists and physicians are doctors
1. Both courses undergo at least 2 years of preclinical studies followed by 3 years of clinical year. Dental students also study pharmacology, microbiology, pathology, general medicine and general surgery just like MBBS students do.
2. All dentists can be considered as surgeons; but not all physicians are surgeons. Dentists are trained to perform invasive minor oral surgeries such as removing impacted wisdom tooth, gingival grafting to more advanced surgeries like jaw segmentation and orthognathic surgeries.
3. Dentists can prescribe antibiotics and medication, as well as injecting local anaesthesia. They also hold the license to the x-ray facility in their clinics, alongside with their counterparts, the physicians and veterinarians.
Dentists are doctors but not all are surgeons only oral and maxillofacial surgeons are.

@@amirhellsing5746 Doctor is a generic term that applies to anyone who has finished a doctoral degree. It isn't exclusively used for physicians. If you look at historical context of word doctor, it was used for university professors who taught and had very high reputation due to their achievements. It is only later that doctor word came to be used for physicians and became quite common for doctors. So doctor isn't reserved for just a physician, if you have a doctoral degree you are a doctor. A medical doctor or physician is something different and dentists can be considered medical doctors with specialization in oral medicine.

At high school being a dentist was my biggest dream, i prayed everyday for it and i worked so hard until i reached it (although my dad was against i, he wanted me to go to med school)
Now,i'm at my 3rd year,studies are so hardand what makes it even worst nobody praise us!they say you're not doctors but that really affects you know! Hi! It sucks how other people dont see you as a doctor. A doctor treats people, you treat people too. Why wouldn't you be a doctor? Because you specialize in one area? Is a gynecologist not a doctor because they specialize in the reproductive organ? How about a psychiatrist? A dermatologist? They are seen as doctors too, so why would you be any less of a doctor?
From a plastic surgeon here, dentists are doctors and i think dentistry in my opinion is more future proofed than medicine , and also did people forget about oral&maxillofacial surgeons there basically dentists and if your dream was to become a dentist then that’s what you should go for and don’t let some jealous uneducated dumbass to put you down, and mann i love ❤️ dentistry its amazing and fancy some of the sweetest people are dentists and as we know: “bad mouth bad life”

@@omigiekiel5968 yes, the dentist isn't well trained in stuff that a generalist would be but he's well trained in the oral hygiene, teeth and all. That's what specialities are about. A neurologist is going to be well trained in neurology compared to nephrology. The difference is that most dentists go to dental school only (there are some that go to both med and dental school) while 'doctors' go to med school.

Gabriel Kwong tooth infections can lead to lots of systemic issues. 2 of the most life threatening that immediately come to mind:
1) necrotic mandibular molar where infection spreads causing submandibular and pharyngeal edema leading to Ludwig’s angina and death
2) maxillary molar spreading retropharyngeally into the cavernous sinus leading to meningitis and death
Just so you know, before I ever touched a patient, I took intense courses in biochemistry, Phys, med micro, immunology, full body anatomy (yes, from the neck to the toe and it was incredibly difficult), embryology, a couple classes of path, and many many other systemic science classes. First year of dental school, I took 2 “dental classes” and everything else was just hours hours of full body, systemic education.
Don’t make yourself look like an idiot by assuming you know anything about what we learn.
I see doctor as a general term for someone who works in healthcare, including dentists. There are specialized fields for doctors and many categories. Surgeons are a type of doctor for example. I think it's good to have people who are specialized and good in specific fields and one definitely shouldn't brag about being a doctor.

You're right, my regular doctor charges me 50 dollars for 15 minutes of his time, my dentist will charge me 350 for for 30 minutes to drill and fill a cavity. To which our healthcare system believes that your teeth aren't body parts that you need and are purely cosmetic.

A dentists hardly ever "just drills and fills a hole" such an ignorant statement. I would think there's far more that goes onto ir. They administer a local anesthesia, the drilling into the tooth must be done in a very specific way....proper materials need to be uses etc... I love my dentist. Far more than my MD.

Based on your argument, physiotherapists, pharmacists, optometrists, occupational therapists are all doctors cos they all diagnose various medical conditions and prescribe treatment in one form or another.
😂😂😂...none of the professions you listed is entitled to prescribe medicine or perform surgery. A dentist can prescribe medication and perform surgery. Even a GP dentist have the authority to cut human tissues. Oral surgeons (dentists specialized in oral surgery) can carry out even much more complicated surgical operations.

You can be a doctor of any field - doctor of philosophy, juris doctore(law doctor) .etc. However medicine is the only field in which you have to be a doctor before you can start working, since if you make mistakes you could kill people.

I like it but nowadays dentists are well respected by many people.People are more aware about their importance.
I love dentists and I address them as Doctor out of respect that they dedicate their lives to help others (and because they are doctors). As a Christian it's important for me to have a Dr. that respects these views since it helps calm me down. And many of them do! So I appreciate all hard working Orthodontist-Doctors.

I am pretty sure everyone says that in jest.. At least I do. The time spent learning before being a dentist is generally much less than being a doctor. I think the average salary is slightly less for a D.D.S. than an M.D. and both are under $200,000 a year. I do find it somewhat shocking that anyone would commit so much time and energy learning a skill set they may not enjoy. I can hit $200k in a good month, and I didn’t have to spend half a decade specializing. I usually end up working 70-80 hours a week when I do that... but it’s sorta my point, I enjoy it. If you think you want to be a dentist, then realize you hate it after a few years of practicing, you would have wasted a nice chunk of your life. (Or worse, you spend the rest of your life loathing what you do.)
Everybody is an anti-dentite, until he is referred to a dentist for the surgical removal of his wisdom teeth and trust me, if not carried out correctly, removal of impacted wisdom teeth can have lethal consequences.

Why being a dentist not considered enough? Why the need for confusion? a dentist can become one, through a Bachelor, Master or PhD degree ... But Dentist is not a Physician, dentist can't work as a General physician in ED or In General Medical/Surgical OPD clinics nor In In-Patient Internal Medicine/General Surgery ward; that the Dentist is a specialist in dentistry.
You can't become a dentist with a bachelors or masters degree in the US.

Telling someone to brush and floss and not eat sugar doesnt make you a doctor. Dentists are mouth mechanics, not doctors.
HOWEVER if youre referring to dentists who perform nutritional assessments, analyze a patient's oral microbiome, look for TMJ signs, specialize in airway health (mouth breathing elimination), and make connections with other specialists and refer patients to them when needed, then yes youre definitely a doctor. Most dentists dont do this stuff unfortunately, so they are not doctors.
