Of all the things I love about your channel, and there's many, I really am super glad that you didn't go for the easy joke and use the pre-theatrical release rodentia-looking face for Sonic. Great video btw
I love the UNO synth, it's nice and compact mono synth that is a lot of fun to use on its own for first timers and it shines as part of an ensemble. But I do agree the knobs and the pots attached are pretty flimsy. I had to replace my original because the cutoff pot broke. If you do buy one, do NOT travel with it unless you have a case for it to protect them knobs.
He’s fair and concise. Some bad things are just limitations. Which sometimes forces you to find workarounds and get creative with it. Plus dude knows his midi and gets a lot out of these “bad” pieces to shine with the aid of software and Ableton, which is great. But some kid at a desk without the smarts is gonna have a tougher time with it. 😀
@@sheepkillindog I agree 100%. The Uno synth certainly not the “greatest synth” out there but for me and my sound work s perfectly and with a few tweaks I can pretty much get it to do what I need but unlike the Volcas,I can save my presets!
@@sheepkillindog dude - just sitting down with this thing, no app, is a pretty geat way to learn basic subtractive synthesis, i dont think you need a lot of smarts for uno at all. I love my Uno. Bit short sighted of them only giving it 1 bar when the Uno Drum as 4. Agreed the delay is weak. I get better delay FX farting into a mic in my bathroom.
I like mine. Was my first analogue synth. I think it can also be viewed as IK's test the market entry for hardware from them. Obviously they'd have wanted a successful first product, however they wouldn't want to bet the company on it. As a first analogue synth for somebody, and as possibly a first synth, it provides a lot of learning opportunities.
If you're plugging into a balanced input, IK provide a cable spec in the manual that solves the noise problems. I have mine powered with a USB hub plugged into a computer, with that cable into a mixer balanced XLR,, and have no noise issues at all.
When I bought my first synth in 2018 I was deciding between either a Monologue or the UNO. I'm very glad today I spent a little extra then and went for the Korg. Needless to say I spent multiples in the following years when the GAS kicked in :D

For the price, especially used, the Uno blows any other analogue out of the water. The amount of flexibility is really incredible. Those morphing waves are something you'd never find on a volca and a modulation matrix for $200... Incredible. But I think I'd rather save up for the pro version so I wouldn't feel like I was missing out on the better interface and expanded feature set
I thought peachbutt was pretty good but Godzilla in the memejam was gold 😆 love this review too, you do such a great job of mixing humour with being really informative in an entertaining way.
I was supposed to buy this little boy, but finally decided for the MICROKORG such a beast, I also choose the MONOLOGUE instead of the Waldorf rocket, now I am looking for the Korg Volca Fm, I don't know why but i'm becoming a Korg lover......
Erik Norlander was the main designer for IK Multimedia for the Uno. I remember seeing videos of him demonstrating it at (I think) a Superbooth show and being impressed by the features at such a low price point. If I were to guess, he tried to pack as much as possible into the thing and keep to whatever budge he was given.
I got the Uno Synth and in my opinion is a good synth, the sound is big for the size, construction is not that good but is acceptable, I got mine for $130 brand new 2 years ago. Did they have space for better options I think so but the real analog sound is definitely there and I like it. PS: I got the Uno Drum too!
Good review. The original Uno Synth is good, with the limitations that are noted. The sound is cool, the sequencer though limited to 16 steps is very powerful. Lots of good presets, good software editor. Also available these days for $150 or less. Think of it as a more modern take on Korg Volca.
@@AudioPilz 😂- Well, with something that tasty it’s hard not to sit down and occasionally make a meal out of it- ... besides I moved on from crayons ages ago, when I realised the yellow ones didn’t taste of lemon any more than Aira gear has a minty flavour! ;) Mr Carpenter aside, check out Mr Kirk Slinkard’s amazing and delightfully humorous series of videos. ruclips.net/video/Dw_sd0RHlZY/видео.html ruclips.net/video/7dEzF7QSgQE/видео.html ruclips.net/video/5J016m2wbWI/видео.html ruclips.net/video/Gz8ZmVF4gyE/видео.html Definitely a better gear contender!
Thanks for reviewing unit I actually have on my birthday! I don't like: - it's power source unit with all that WTF's (ground loop hum, battery noise hum, being picky about power bricks) - losing presets changes while pressing up/down buttons in bad time - touch keyboard - that you are not able to sync with volca while using arpeggiator - needing to register for using software editor But I like: - UNO's sound and some of the presets (I added few from Synthmania) - arpeggiator - this is very powerful and user friendly thing - Godzilla!!!!
Last year I bought a used UNO synth for very cheap. But I find that I rarely ever use it. If you love sizzling saw wave sounds, it delivers those in abundance. But to get anything else requires a bit of effort.
As a Moog Source owner, i would never buy another synth, or anything else for that matter, that uses touch panel controls. It's a really serious flaw on the Moog...it makes operating it so slow. If i wasn't so emotionally attached to the synth, i would have sold it years ago! Great video, as ever. 👍🏻
I'm no pro by any means, but I like the UNO synth. I sold it when i needed a little $ but then i bought it again recently. I really like the arpeggiator and the scale quantization. It sounds pretty good and would be great for synthwave.
great feature as always, but i'm most compelled to say: REALLY flattering use of the EHX holy grail verb - i never wanted one until now, it just never impressed me and until the premium reverb pedal boom with empress/eventide/etc i felt like i could never trust guitarists and guitarist-marketed gear when it came to reverbs (not a complete snob just that i could trust alesis a lot more for budget verbs). but it was perfect on the IK uno there and i'm curious about possibly having it as an insert for other mono-output synths. damn i bet yam FM + holy grail sounds spooky, i'm off to search for it. thanks again for bringing us along with these!
So good as always. I've always wanted to see you cover this synth, so glad you did! Do you think you'd ever cover the Novation Mininova? I'd love to hear your thoughts on it
Cheers Florian, still a great sounding little synth ... with some grating design and software issues, nearly IK, nearly. Really enjoyed the Good Gear jam, just missing some JJ Abrams lens flare off the 'ol disco ball. :)
nice tracks as usual - the unit sounds pretty good and was an easy purchase for the price when it came out, but it definitely has those limitations the performance does seem better on this one than the drum version it's nice to have more portable DC-powered stuff to carry around Sound Machines provided some of the audio goodness inside and they make great modular stuff of their own, even that cool EEG 'brainterface' for MIDI and CV :-)
Another flaw is the filter keyboard knob is only exist in the software... They can definitly make that in the parameter matrix in the future firmware updates.
It was my first synth and I loved the price and the sound, but I also had noise issues constantly and it was super buggy. Many times I'd edit parameters only for them mysteriously change back as soon as I touched the cutoff. Using the app was better, but then the noise was worse. I don't regret it, but I think it would be better if I had just saved up for a better instrument.
the thing this guy misses out on is the rave scene was built on diy set ups / cheap gear / shitty vinyl pressing houses using crap stock, djs writing tunes with minimal kit getting their girlfriends who couldnt sing to sing etc. the whole clubbing / dance scene was literally built on the premise of "if it sounds funky dont worry about the quality too much". as a dj of 30 years and having spent thousands on records i can say that when its 2am you can rock a dance floor with any sound. i understand hes trying to make a youtube channel in 202. its like me doing an entire channel just shitting on old dj tech, what would be the point? more so when the whole culture was built on the old gear.

@@Monkeyshaman Just watch out for rogue carrots.
I thought peachbutt was pretty good but Godzilla in the memejam was gold 😆 love this review too, you do such a great job of mixing humour with being really informative in an entertaining way.
Thank you so much!!!
Near the 50.000 my man 💪✌️
Almost there, thanks!
How do you only have 50k subscribers? This channel is epic
Thank you!!! Working on it!
I was supposed to buy this little boy, but finally decided for the MICROKORG such a beast, I also choose the MONOLOGUE instead of the Waldorf rocket, now I am looking for the Korg Volca Fm, I don't know why but i'm becoming a Korg lover......
Nothing wrong with Korg stuff, love it!
EN really knows his stuff!
I agree but the jump to the pro version is $$$ 😢
Good review. The original Uno Synth is good, with the limitations that are noted. The sound is cool, the sequencer though limited to 16 steps is very powerful. Lots of good presets, good software editor. Also available these days for $150 or less. Think of it as a more modern take on Korg Volca.
Thank you! I would gig with Volcas, though;)
I nearly spat out my SQ-80 when you introdunced that last track!
Ensoniqs are a serious choking hazard;)

😂- Well, with something that tasty it’s hard not to sit down and occasionally make a meal out of it-
... besides I moved on from crayons ages ago, when I realised the yellow ones didn’t taste of lemon any more than Aira gear has a minty flavour! ;)
Mr Carpenter aside, check out Mr Kirk Slinkard’s amazing and delightfully humorous series of videos.

Definitely a better gear contender!
Can’t wait for the Stylophone episode… only because I want to hear you jam out on one! 😉
Thanks for the suggestion! I'm really shirking that one;)
Have you seen the stylophone drum machine its TERRIBLE
@@redonk87 Are you talking about the Hip Hop Stylophone? I have one. Hilariously crap!
😁👍👍
The Godzilla clip made my day!
Happy to hear that, thanks!
Another wery good wideo! Keep up the good verk!
Thank you wery much!
@@AudioPilz I only joke because I am jealous. My Minnesota accent doesn't get me as far as an Austrian one would.
Thanks for reviewing unit I actually have on my birthday!
I don't like:
- it's power source unit with all that WTF's (ground loop hum, battery noise hum, being picky about power bricks)
- losing presets changes while pressing up/down buttons in bad time
- touch keyboard
- that you are not able to sync with volca while using arpeggiator
- needing to register for using software editor
But I like:
- UNO's sound and some of the presets (I added few from Synthmania)
- arpeggiator - this is very powerful and user friendly thing
- Godzilla!!!!
Godzilla for sure!
YASSS! Bad Gear Friday never disappoints! Bad Gear 4 Life!
We live 4 Bad Gear!!!
Last year I bought a used UNO synth for very cheap. But I find that I rarely ever use it. If you love sizzling saw wave sounds, it delivers those in abundance. But to get anything else requires a bit of effort.
I really like the square too! Nice overtones!
Thanks! Not my first choice either
I'm no pro by any means, but I like the UNO synth. I sold it when i needed a little $ but then i bought it again recently. I really like the arpeggiator and the scale quantization. It sounds pretty good and would be great for synthwave.
Great if it works in your setup!
That Windows error sound when talking about the IK web site. :D
;)
Your videos are very funny..........I laughed at the knob sound and those leaky batteries!
Thank you so much!!!
5:25 sounds like the soundtrack to a movie I definitely have to watch
Most likely a cop/gangster thing!
great feature as always, but i'm most compelled to say: REALLY flattering use of the EHX holy grail verb - i never wanted one until now, it just never impressed me and until the premium reverb pedal boom with empress/eventide/etc i felt like i could never trust guitarists and guitarist-marketed gear when it came to reverbs (not a complete snob just that i could trust alesis a lot more for budget verbs). but it was perfect on the IK uno there and i'm curious about possibly having it as an insert for other mono-output synths. damn i bet yam FM + holy grail sounds spooky, i'm off to search for it. thanks again for bringing us along with these!
Thanks! The HG is very unpretentious, love it!
oooh, your intor sounds really warm this time
❤️ 🧡 💛 💚 💙 💜 🖤
Killed it, as usual!
Thanks!
Great episode! Especially because this week's hardware won't risk harm to my bank account. ;)
Yup, very affordable noisemaker (literally and figuratively;)
Awesome tunes this episode! :D
Thanks!
The sign in page for the uno editor is funny as hell
First Name: Kissmy

LMFAO!!!!
Hey, that's my true name😂
Bad Gear is the greatest channel in the history of synth videos!
❤️❤️❤️
So good as always. I've always wanted to see you cover this synth, so glad you did! Do you think you'd ever cover the Novation Mininova? I'd love to hear your thoughts on it
Thanks! Great suggestion (unfortunately, I just messed up a good deal for a Mininova😢)
Just got one of these from Amazon for around £100 which is quite a drop in price. Happy with the purchase although the odd audio output is a negative.
Powerbanks and DI-boxes help (mostly;)
@@AudioPilz thanks man, looking forward to your next video
i love my Uno. it has its quirks, but great bang for the buck, and yes, it's SMALL.
Great sounds!
also, it has complete MIDI specs. connect it to advanced sequencer like Squarp Pyramid, and you can squeeze a lot out of it.
Cheers Florian, still a great sounding little synth ... with some grating design and software issues, nearly IK, nearly. Really enjoyed the Good Gear jam, just missing some JJ Abrams lens flare off the 'ol disco ball. :)
Thank you!!!
Its Friday... its Bad Gear Day! ... the Godzilla video had me in stitches
Happy to hear that, thanks!
nice tracks as usual - the unit sounds pretty good and was an easy purchase for the price when it came out, but it definitely has those limitations
the performance does seem better on this one than the drum version
it's nice to have more portable DC-powered stuff to carry around
Sound Machines provided some of the audio goodness inside and they make great modular stuff of their own, even that cool EEG 'brainterface' for MIDI and CV :-)
Thanks! It certainly sounds bigger than one might expect
Another flaw is the filter keyboard knob is only exist in the software... They can definitly make that in the parameter matrix in the future firmware updates.
Yeah, so many omissions!!!
The Godzilla mash-up gave me a laugh - well done.
Thank you!!!
I think it was just a long term marketing stunt for the pro version
about to buy a 2nd hand one soon, very soon, i think it's small enough to fit on my crowded desktop, and go thru another distortion pedal = )
the thing this guy misses out on is the rave scene was built on diy set ups / cheap gear / shitty vinyl pressing houses using crap stock, djs writing tunes with minimal kit getting their girlfriends who couldnt sing to sing etc. the whole clubbing / dance scene was literally built on the premise of "if it sounds funky dont worry about the quality too much". as a dj of 30 years and having spent thousands on records i can say that when its 2am you can rock a dance floor with any sound. i understand hes trying to make a youtube channel in 202. its like me doing an entire channel just shitting on old dj tech, what would be the point? more so when the whole culture was built on the old gear.
Believe me Sir, no (unfounded) craps were taken on any gear;)
Haha, WIN! This is the one (1) cheap synth I have managed to avoid buying. So glad to see it on Bad Gear.
Thanks! I'm proud of you;)
I hope that glass of water never leaves the shelf. It's the highlight of every episode seeing how full it is.
Finest Viennese tap water;)
