Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the IK Multimedia UNO Synth. Is this affordable analog beast not for pros? - Видеоклипы
Can I handle Good Gear??? ruclips.net/video/J9xP_nfCh0M/видео.html
Good gear were in your heart all along
Sure, but I'm more interested in unique and hard-to-use sounds 'cause I'm a noise demon. :)
It definitely ticks alot of boxes 👍😎
Probably depends on your definition of "good" gear.
But as old a saying says: One mans bad gear is another mans Money Machine. (Or someting like that :))
Nice Track by the way. 🕺
Moody DJ face engage ;)
The physical design of a piece of gear shouldn't be the main selling point on gear but IK seems set on making machines that look like grandmas dialysis machine.
It certainly has a similar noise spectrum;)
My grandma's dialysis machine looks better than this and I have an UNO. Gave it to my granddaughter.
They're also as flimsy as they look.
@@odiroot nearly, but you can also buy 10 for the price of a synth really designed to be giggable. & theres not a heap to break if you dont actually snap off the knobs. even then you could probably use it XD
@@ThePacratz Sorry to hear that your granddaughter needs dialysis. Couldn't they just share the machine?
Godzilla standing on his desk in Dead Poets Society is the greatest thing I will see all day.
Seize the day!!!
If it had eaten Julie Andrews, it would have made MY day. LOL!;)
Oh captain, my AAAARRRrrrrr!!!
In the comments at 5.02. "I'm a 20 something urban guy with a demibeard, I need to sequence basslines while doing parkour and drinking soylent and the city is my sample source and probably I wear fingerless gloves in my gear demos" I cracked up when i read that. Gold Jerry gold.
That one had me rolling too!
@@AudioPilz I gotta say godzilla at the end was brilliant. Inspired. Kept me laughing.
Haha the fuck was that?? Cheers for pointing that out I would never have noticed that 😂😂
Almost every week: "Yes, you are right, this is bad gear." After the awesome demotunes: "Screw this, now i want one."
I have (or had) almost all the gear on this channel. All of his points are spot on and his music (and video work) are excellent. Especially when you consider he’s been going weekly for well over a year now. That’s a lot of original pieces!! I trust his opinion plus that Gearfacts guy from Australia. He has videos on so much “junk” and he’s a character.
@@sheepkillindog Agreed on everything! :)
Thank you so much!!!
That Godzilla section had me laughing out loud - didn't really notice the synth :D
Thanks! Watch it twice;)
I didn't even realise I'm your fan, until just now when I dropped everything to check out your newest Bad Gear.
Keep up the good work. You tick all the boxes.
So happy to hear that! Thanks!
Bought this guy because thought it was what I wanted. Sold it immediately. Re-bought again because i realized was what I NEED.
The way of gear;)
You are such a good musician, every single video the music you play is absolutely fantastic. I know the video is about the gear, but man you are so talented I would listen to your music all the time if I could.
Wow, just finally watched this, i now like this hw way better than i previously did. The really wonderful surprise was your Novation Circuit drives IK Uno section. That sounded beautiful, I think that deserves a special full video all on it's own where you just play that for 30 minutes or so....
This is my new favorite channel. You do a great job demonstrating the character of all the gear you use. Thanks a lot :)
Thank you so much!
Always a pleasure to see your videos Florian, really makes my Friday.
I nearly bought this a while back and was umming and ahing over whether to or not. Glad to see it looked over so scrupulously.
Thanks! If you can make it work in your setup it's a good-sounding synth!
Man these video edits keep getting better and better, with more creativity every time, great episode.
Thanks!
This is the first episode where I realized compared to your old videos, your editing has improved a lot! Great job! I bet the uno synth pro will be here soon.
Thank you! Let's see if the Pro is Bad Gear too;)
Seriously You are a great example that it is not the equipment that makes the great music, but your skills, you can wield just about anything and make it sound like a boss track.
Thank you so much!
The "patch skipping" bug is actually a software issue! I had the same problem, and a firmware update fixed it!
The latest firmware also added some "shift" functions to expose more parameters to the knobs
Good to know, thanks for posting!
absolutely love the genre title, I always laugh out loud at the humour of this channel, fantastic, love the windows sounds
Thanks!
I was just having this conversation the other day. Someone I know who doesn't listen to this channel all that often was complaining about the name of it, because he liked some of the pieces of gear he saw being reviewed and didn't understand the humor.
I KEEP COMMING BACK, NOT JUST FOR THE GEAR BREAKDOWNS. "THIS GUY" MAKES SOME KILLER JAMS. BUT ALSO YOUR VIDEO EDITING AND VISUAL DUBBING IS GODDAMN HILARIOUS!
Thank you so much!!!
Your summation is wonderful! 🙌👏 These are indeed wondrous times for synthesists!
Thanks!
Absolutely love your stuff man! Don't ever stop making this awesome content please....
Thank you so much!!!
I was so excited to get this as my first synth, and the sound is ok. However I sold it after realising that they were never going to update the firmware with any user requested features from their forum. They instead packaged all of the requests up as the Pro, and demanded hundreds of moneys more. Inexcusable. The $20 license transfer fee was the final indignity. Top tip- if you buy one just say the seller wouldn’t transfer, and they will give it to you anyway. Worked for me. Love the vids, keep up the brilliant work 😎
Thanks! Great idea, I'll try that!
Godzilla is just genius, brilliant
Thanks! She's a international treasure;)
First synth I've ever bought. Never going to give it away. It still kind of breaks my heart when all the numbers go crazy though. Great channel man!
Thanks! I've read some comments that a firmware update helps
Great work creating some nice tunes with the UNO synth. Definitely dig the sound of this synth. Need to use mine more often!
Thanks!
Best channel on RUclips!!! Love all your videos. Especially the dancing Godzilla!
Thank you so much!!!
I always get excited when I see the xr20..its like seeing a friend on local news or something
Underrated drum machine!
awesome episode , so as for korg 707 , finally catched all shows since i was absent :P somehow glad that you had technical issue today :P which you will fix soon !
The best show to wake up to!
[Edit] Jam 2 as you labeled it is so sick... my type of jam!
Nice, thanks!
I don't even play the keys, I'm here for the absolutely flawless meme utilization. Your videos are a good workout actually, even if one time I almost passed out laughing at one of the memes. Keep up the good work, son.
Thank you so much!!!
Of all the things I love about your channel, and there's many, I really am super glad that you didn't go for the easy joke and use the pre-theatrical release rodentia-looking face for Sonic. Great video btw
Thanks! That ain't Sonic;)
Interestingly, I think the sound demos you've made for the Uno are some of the best you've made so far.
Thank you!!!
That was a real fun video!! You’ve mad it sound like it’s not that bad after all lol!! Thanks for lifting me before work tonight!!👍
Thank you, always a pleasure!
Brilliant review as always. Saying 'but' then flashing the peaches pic was genius.
I read a blog about Sound of Music by too Austrian ladies, it was hilarious, and apparently not Austria's favourite film.
Thanks! I haven't seen SOM until I was in my thirties;)
Lol, loved it! Ticked all those boxes 😁 this synth sounds really good despite its let's call it "low cost" build quality I really like the tone and filter. Also the fact that is has MIDI CC for many parameters at this price point on an analog synth really is amazing!
One mighty ole boxticker;)
It sounds really nice in the mix, subtle filter with nice resonance.
Agreed, really liked the raw oscillators and filter too
So good as always. I've always wanted to see you cover this synth, so glad you did! Do you think you'd ever cover the Novation Mininova? I'd love to hear your thoughts on it
Thanks! Great suggestion (unfortunately, I just messed up a good deal for a Mininova😢)
2:24 retro look, nice :-). There is something a bit 'Big Track' about using the front panel. Love it.
UNO Synth - microwaving tracks since 2018
One of the most analog sounding mono synths, thumb up!
Agreed, some very prototypical stuff!
God damn your video editing has always been great but the Godzilla music video at the end was hilarious. And if you are outsourcing the video editing (no shame if u do it’s a whole other world of discipline, just staying a competent musician day in and out is hard enough) than please give your man a shout out!! Bravo!!
Thanks! No video editing person yet...
I love the UNO synth, it's nice and compact mono synth that is a lot of fun to use on its own for first timers and it shines as part of an ensemble. But I do agree the knobs and the pots attached are pretty flimsy. I had to replace my original because the cutoff pot broke.
If you do buy one, do NOT travel with it unless you have a case for it to protect them knobs.
A decksave certainly raises the resale value;)
Did I see a brief blip of the fabulous "D-Beam" in action?! You need to do a special episode dedicated to Roland's amazing modulation tool. As for the little IK - It is what it is, cheap & dirty, with a bit of analog goodness hidden under its plastic facade...
Damn, I hate D-Beams so much!!!
@@briandavis812 the answer is: YES!
I thought peachbutt was pretty good but Godzilla in the memejam was gold 😆 love this review too, you do such a great job of mixing humour with being really informative in an entertaining way.
Thank you so much!!!
Looks like a nice partner for my rhythm wolf. Uno Lobo jam coming soon!
I had the feeling once I saw the Pro that the original UNO was basically a publicly sold prototype that used the hype of miniaturized synths to pass off what could be seen as a late beta test.
I thought the exact same thing😂
That Windows error sound when talking about the IK web site. :D
;)
We need these videos to be premieres so we can chat about it :)
Gear of the week is confidential and for Patrons only;)
@@AudioPilz zees boujie pigs!!! *breaks out singing la marseillaise*
great sounding filter and pulse wave
Agreed!
The Uno synth is my favourite piece of kit at the moment, very happy this review wasn’t as bad as it could of been!
If you can make it work in your setup it's great!
He’s fair and concise. Some bad things are just limitations. Which sometimes forces you to find workarounds and get creative with it. Plus dude knows his midi and gets a lot out of these “bad” pieces to shine with the aid of software and Ableton, which is great. But some kid at a desk without the smarts is gonna have a tougher time with it. 😀
@@sheepkillindog I agree 100%. The Uno synth certainly not the “greatest synth” out there but for me and my sound work s perfectly and with a few tweaks I can pretty much get it to do what I need but unlike the Volcas,I can save my presets!
@@sheepkillindog dude - just sitting down with this thing, no app, is a pretty geat way to learn basic subtractive synthesis, i dont think you need a lot of smarts for uno at all. And srsly its hard to argue with any 2 Osc + resonant filter analog synth for $150US, let alone one as capable as this. It was certainly never intended a s a studio instrument but for what it is its killer.
None of this gear us nessisarily "bad". It's all about how you use it. Perhaps you wouldn't make a full album on it. But you can definitely find uses for any piece of gear if you're creative about it.
Near the 50.000 my man 💪✌️
Almost there, thanks!
Finally with circuit and uno episodes all of my synths and drums are officially bad. Hoping for some good gear episodes;)
Wow, we're really ticking all the boxes here;)
Another wery good wideo! Keep up the good verk!
Thank you wery much!
@@AudioPilz I only joke because I am jealous. My Minnesota accent doesn't get me as far as an Austrian one would.
UNO was really really nice for me. Especially if controlled via the VST in Ableton. and using the Push as knobs and its mapping. Just great sound overall for 90Euros second hand
Nice price!
Its Friday... its Bad Gear Day! ... the Godzilla video had me in stitches
Happy to hear that, thanks!
Killed it, as usual!
Thanks!
How do you only have 50k subscribers? This channel is epic
Thank you!!! Working on it!
The hills are alive... I use my Uno as an external oscillator input into my "vintage" Korg R3 - now there's a Bad Gear episode.
Great suggestion, thanks!
As a Moog Source owner, i would never buy another synth, or anything else for that matter, that uses touch panel controls.
It's a really serious flaw on the Moog...it makes operating it so slow. If i wasn't so emotionally attached to the synth, i would have sold it years ago!
Great video, as ever. 👍🏻
Thanks! Not my first choice either
I had to play it twice, because I laughed so much the first time from the memes and jokes, and didn't get all the info.
Thanks again for your insane humour. I mean - Godzilla on a school desk? Who would have thought of that but you? No one!
Thank you!!!
I nearly spat out my SQ-80 when you introdunced that last track!
Ensoniqs are a serious choking hazard;)

😂- Well, with something that tasty it’s hard not to sit down and occasionally make a meal out of it-
... besides I moved on from crayons ages ago, when I realised the yellow ones didn’t taste of lemon any more than Aira gear has a minty flavour! ;)
Mr Carpenter aside, check out Mr Kirk Slinkard’s amazing and delightfully humorous series of videos.

Definitely a better gear contender!
oooh, your intor sounds really warm this time
❤️ 🧡 💛 💚 💙 💜 🖤
I've never taken a bad gear as personal as this lmao i love the uno but yeah the short 16 step sequencer is annoying lol great editing as always
Nothing personal;) Thanks!
Your videos are very funny..........I laughed at the knob sound and those leaky batteries!
Thank you so much!!!
Good review. The original Uno Synth is good, with the limitations that are noted. The sound is cool, the sequencer though limited to 16 steps is very powerful. Lots of good presets, good software editor. Also available these days for $150 or less. Think of it as a more modern take on Korg Volca.
Thank you! I would gig with Volcas, though;)
Lovely price for a 2 OSC at least. It's time USB-powerable/ed devices start bringing built in DI circuits, I use IKEA's LADDA which are ENELOOP factory goodness, but that noise floor rises so high I need a stepladder the moment I get the bad idea to also control things over USB. Blech!
Yeah, that's really an issue!
they spec a cable on the IK site that really does help if you have a balanced interface. Much as i cringe to use it lol. the right Powered USB hub also does the job iirc
@@mycosys Yes, the specs for that cable are also in to the manual. My UNO Synth works fine with my balanced input mixer now.
(and I'm USB hub powering it)
I haven't firmware updated mine on a bit. I've always had issues with the bpm changes "slipping" past where I want them to be. Any fix for that? Or any trick I missed?
I would like to know too!
For the price, especially used, the Uno blows any other analogue out of the water. The amount of flexibility is really incredible. Those morphing waves are something you'd never find on a volca and a modulation matrix for $200... Incredible. But I think I'd rather save up for the pro version so I wouldn't feel like I was missing out on the better interface and expanded feature set
👍👍👍
Yep i got this one. I'am patching Kee bass style bass on this divice i'am close though and that's because off the fat low frequenties this thing is putting out. Thanks for the video
Also the noise groundloop and some thing, has to do with the alarmclock style digital screen beleave IT or not
Thanks for watching!
When I bought my first synth in 2018 I was deciding between either a Monologue or the UNO. I'm very glad today I spent a little extra then and went for the Korg. Needless to say I spent multiples in the following years when the GAS kicked in :D
GAS is a serious danger to every gearheads bank account!
nice tracks as usual - the unit sounds pretty good and was an easy purchase for the price when it came out, but it definitely has those limitations
the performance does seem better on this one than the drum version
it's nice to have more portable DC-powered stuff to carry around
Sound Machines provided some of the audio goodness inside and they make great modular stuff of their own, even that cool EEG 'brainterface' for MIDI and CV :-)
Thanks! It certainly sounds bigger than one might expect
Awesome tunes this episode! :D
Thanks!
Thanks for reviewing unit I actually have on my birthday!
I don't like:
- it's power source unit with all that WTF's (ground loop hum, battery noise hum, being picky about power bricks)
- losing presets changes while pressing up/down buttons in bad time
- touch keyboard
- that you are not able to sync with volca while using arpeggiator
- needing to register for using software editor
But I like:
- UNO's sound and some of the presets (I added few from Synthmania)
- arpeggiator - this is very powerful and user friendly thing
- Godzilla!!!!
Godzilla for sure!
great feature as always, but i'm most compelled to say: REALLY flattering use of the EHX holy grail verb - i never wanted one until now, it just never impressed me and until the premium reverb pedal boom with empress/eventide/etc i felt like i could never trust guitarists and guitarist-marketed gear when it came to reverbs (not a complete snob just that i could trust alesis a lot more for budget verbs). but it was perfect on the IK uno there and i'm curious about possibly having it as an insert for other mono-output synths. damn i bet yam FM + holy grail sounds spooky, i'm off to search for it. thanks again for bringing us along with these!
Thanks! The HG is very unpretentious, love it!
great video! would it be possible to trigger other instruments with the sequencer?
Wow you always make such great grooves!
Thank you!!!
The Godzilla clip made my day!
Happy to hear that, thanks!
I like mine. Was my first analogue synth.
I think it can also be viewed as IK's test the market entry for hardware from them. Obviously they'd have wanted a successful first product, however they wouldn't want to bet the company on it.
As a first analogue synth for somebody, and as possibly a first synth, it provides a lot of learning opportunities.
If you're plugging into a balanced input, IK provide a cable spec in the manual that solves the noise problems.
I have mine powered with a USB hub plugged into a computer, with that cable into a mixer balanced XLR,, and have no noise issues at all.
Thanks for posting, I have to try that cable!
I love my Uno. Bit short sighted of them only giving it 1 bar when the Uno Drum as 4. Agreed the delay is weak. I get better delay FX farting into a mic in my bathroom.
Samples or didn't happen;)
@@AudioPilz Samples specifically on the SK-1 (which you dubbed the OG Fart Sampler) :D
There is much I don’t like about the Uno, and yet I keep drifting back to it and don’t regret buying it.*
It’s not going to sound like much of an endorsement either but especially the matrix layout, it makes a good beginner synth for grasping what the different filter/envelop/lfo stuff does. Every time I think I’ve had it with the Uno, something crops up and I say ok let’s see if the Uno can add something…and I’m happy with the results.
*after updating the firmware so it would stop jumping presets.
Agreed, it's a great starting point!
Erik Norlander was the main designer for IK Multimedia for the Uno. I remember seeing videos of him demonstrating it at (I think) a Superbooth show and being impressed by the features at such a low price point. If I were to guess, he tried to pack as much as possible into the thing and keep to whatever budge he was given.
EN really knows his stuff!
That godzilla montage was fucking epic btw!
Thank you!!!
Fun little box that is what it is. Got mine on sale with 0% int. for 48 mos. Nice first synth.
Agreed, great for beginners. It sounds like a real synth
Can’t wait for the Stylophone episode… only because I want to hear you jam out on one! 😉
Thanks for the suggestion! I'm really shirking that one;)

@@DmitryPuffin да ты и сам крут) glad i looked into your account as well, your latest EP on soundcloud sounds nice (so far).
Cheers Florian, still a great sounding little synth ... with some grating design and software issues, nearly IK, nearly. Really enjoyed the Good Gear jam, just missing some JJ Abrams lens flare off the 'ol disco ball. :)
Thank you!!!
Intrigued with that throw away line 'with the circuit feeding some chords to the arpeggiator'. Could you explain how you achived this on both sides of that connections. Chords on the circuit / Uno Arpeggiating incoming midi chords?
UNO was midi synced to the Circuit, arp was on. Circuit sent a 4 bar polyphonic legato pattern to the UNO.
@@AudioPilz Sweet. I'll be looking into this.

I'm no pro by any means, but I like the UNO synth. I sold it when i needed a little $ but then i bought it again recently. I really like the arpeggiator and the scale quantization. It sounds pretty good and would be great for synthwave.
Great if it works in your setup!
Love your videos. Request for Bad Gear - Arturia Microfreak!!!!!
Thanks! Great suggestion!
I got the Uno Synth and in my opinion is a good synth, the sound is big for the size, construction is not that good but is acceptable, I got mine for $130 brand new 2 years ago.
Did they have space for better options I think so but the real analog sound is definitely there and I like it.
PS: I got the Uno Drum too!
I agree but the jump to the pro version is $$$ 😢
