This show was way ahead of its time. People were just getting used to the idea of adult primetime animation back then. It's too bad it had such a short run; it has some of my all time favorite voice performances in it. "Rosebud frozen peas. Full of country goodness and green pea-ness."
The Critic was an underrated gem in my opinion. Back before South Park and Family Guy, adult animation wasn't shock humur Vulgarity. But I what I can never understand why the series finale was a clip show. It bothered me when I was a kid and it bothers me as an adult.
I still love the show. I did ever since it 1st aired and still enjoy its boxset! I put high on my list of great comedies, such as Clerks, Mission Hill, Duckman, Wait til your Father gets Home and yes, Dave the Barbarrian!

Never even saw the Fox finale, probably because of the reason you mentioned with them changing time slots.
I would certainly be behind a revival of the Critic!!! I LOVED that show, as a kid, & recognized its absolute genius, even back then!! I too, loved the Simpsons episode with Jay Sherman. That one still cracks me up, when Homer votes for Moleman's man getting hit in the groin with football, short film!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The GameTap revival also failed because it implied that Jay and Alice got divorced, and then he hooks up with his makeup artist. Talk about a slap in the face to your original audience. People LIKED Jay and Alice. They didn't want them split up, and they didn't want Jay with some new chick they had no emotional investment in.
I never got into 'Dave The Barbarian', but I can sympathize with those that do because that show came out at a time when Disney Channel was chasing after tween girls, and neglecting everyone else. (You can tell I would never watch crap like 'Lizzie McGuire', or 'Hanna Montana') 'Dave The Barbarian' really stood out from the other tween girl shows they were promoting, and they didn't want to promote something that wasn't 'Lizzie McGuire', or 'Hanna Montana'. So they killed it off, and let it die. That being said, I never gave 'Dave' a chance because I wanted more of the classic 'Disney Afternoon' style of shows. I never watched anything on Disney's networks until 'DuckTales 2017'.
The passing of disney afternoon, the abandonment of animation for the tween girl live-action shows and the wish to return to the golden age of disney. Disney has a habit of abandoning successful shows for trends, regardless of how it does. That's without the scary dark secrets they had during that live-action era. Especially with "the suite life of zack and cody".
I think the world in 1993 wasn't ready for "The Critic". if the same show came out now, it would be a smashing success on any network, because the demographic in the western world has changed so much in 30 years. There's more people now who are like "The Critic", that they would find him a relatable character
According to commentary the cancellation happened to because the brief president of FOX hated the show, someone else before him bought the show... sadly the show didn’t have any luck... which is very sad, it was perfect for FOX... but it was when it went to Comedy Central that it got cult status
Viva Jay Sherman! I seldom had seen a movie that was talked about on The Critic but I enjoyed for everything else. The show could make a return though I worry it would be a watered down version of it's former self due to the perpetually irate that become more unhinged if something they like is criticized.
Also according to Mike Reiess he said The president of the network for a short time John Matoian, he hated the show and he was around long enough to cancel the show
In a world where remakes and a flooded market of Superhero movies rule the big screen, the world needs The Critic. I say it's time for a comeback of that show. It's possible. Instead of Christine Cavanaugh voicing Marty, just get Nancy Cartwright (she did voice Chuckie on Rugrats after Christine retired after all). Have Tress MacNeille voicing the make-up lady, and since Charle Napier has been dead for years, his character could be replaced with an asshole boss voiced by say Dana "Master Shake" Snyder. Just an idea at least
One thing I still don't understand is how Jay became the unluckiest man on the planet. With the exception of Marty, Margo, Jeremy Hawke and Alice and her daughter, Jay's pretty much the most disrespected man on Earth.
It stinks that such a great adult cartoon got such bad treatment! If I ever had some money to spend on Patreon I'd totally put something for the raffle

Not ONLY do you give my EXACT opinions on who framed roger rabbit, but, as of a few days ago, i said the EXACT same thing to somebody hired to change my bathroom, hired by the state, to wheelchair-accessible about the simpsons and south park, but using a sandbox analogy, noting a trend bothering me EVER since disney got their hands on the Simpsons for about a few years now, stuff that my family is bored of hearing about, as well as i am currently staring at the dvd copy of the critic, currently (since the pandemic) purchased and watched to the point of the case being "battered" beyond repair, on my "bookshelf" out of my reach by my mother!!!! (Second to last shelf from the top, behind the bed i didn't ask for, making the transfer, because of height, extremely difficult to reach while trying to get in bed to watch your video, much less having to ask for help(and implied permission)from my mom to watch my damn dvds/blu ray/cds, etc. Pretty unfair for a guy confined to a chair 'cause of doctor incompetence(NOT PARALYZED) since 10-ish the year roger came out, so, yeah, i'm FUCKING old!) As well as the analogy which you might consider helpful, "sandbox"=show, simpsons, based on the ideas of the MARVEL episode's ending and how they handled pixar, maggie, and ron's gone wrong, and moe proves disney is making the Simpsons crew "pack up their toys" in anticipation of "stopping playtime!" South Park, on the other hand, makes this analogy possible by looking at the other side, they are deciding they want to "choose" to leave the "sandbox" on their own terms, hence the "goodbye/anniversary" concert, choosing not ONLY how they want the audience to perceive their show and its legacy, but where they want the characters to end up when the "curtain" rolls! I liked the Critic, my personal view of the Simpson's cross over would be to just cut out most of the Simpson's and make Pattie or Selma with the romance for the Critic. Probably more fun and just more interesting than what they did for the crossover

I remember the internet show. What a huge disappointment.
The best thing about this show was how it did a lot of good satire on stupid shit in TV, Movies, and in Hollywood.
