No enthusiast ever asked for a Hybrid coupe with simulated gearbox. A coupe? Yes. Manual? Yes. But not an auto hybrid coupe. Look, as good as Ionic's simulated gearbox is, that's a solution for an EV that doesn't even have a gearbox. The 86 is selling pretty well. Hot take: The push to EVs is NOT to save the planet. It is to prevent you from having the freedom to drive. Hence the lack of a steering wheel in the EV concept you called out. 😬
Pushing the driver out of the car is a simultaneous but unrelated development to the rise of EVs. ICE cars can be made boring and autonomous, too. They've been heading that way for a while. Major advancements in autonomous driving (machine vision, LIDAR, massively parallel processing) just happened to occur at the same time as major advancements in EV tech (new battery chemistries, large-scale cell manufacturing, regenerative speed controllers & control systems).
And the car only functions when it's allowed, can be remotely disabled, and can't be recharged during a blackout. Safe plebs are preferable to free risk takers.
The Prius is expensive and comes in 4 doors, if anything it has competition in the Civic Hatchback and already loses based on the sales and quite frankly is an easier car to live with.
This is not a mistake. The Prelude is a car for going on dates with the girls and cruising with one hand on the wheel. It's not like the Type R crowds.
I had a full drag race 4th gen that made 800 hp 23 years ago. Favorite car ever. It started as a 4 wheel steering daily driver and I converted it to a 2.2 Vtec and eventually made it fill tube chassis. I miss it soooo much.
Hybrid makes a lot of sense. From a consumer and a car company perspective. Plus unfortunately barring niche markets non hybrid isn’t an attractive proposal for most buyers.
The problem is that people who drive hybrids do so because a car is A-to-B for them and they want to save money. They're not looking to buy an unpractical 2-door coup. This just shows how out of touch Honda is -- they haven't learned anything from the failure of the NSX reboot.
The vast majority of the public will buy this BECAUSE it's a hybrid and sporty looking. Most people in the market for a brand new daily and want a prius, dont really have any asthetic options and are not car people in the first place. This thing will sell like HOTCAKES. Sidenote, it's just a civic hybrid coupe. This is why it came to market so quick. Its just a different body on the same platform.
Exactly! Not currently in the market for a new car, but this will be at the top of my list the next time I am bc I will never buy a full gas car & want something with some sporty character
The Honda Prelude was always a platform for bleeding edge tech. The 5th gen had an early FWD version of the SH-AWD system that later debuted on the 2005 Acura RL. So seeing this 6th gen Prelude with a performance gas electric hybrid system for a vehicle many can afford makes sense. And having a sporty coupe in Honda’s current lineup is great to see.
I still like the look of the 4th gen Prelude the best, but this one looks damn good in my opinion. Way better than their awful new Integra and Civic designs.
I think it would be interesting to see Honda do a little experiment and sell it with a non hybrid option for a year. If the non hybrid option sells better, then thatll show them that a hybrid/electric car aint what people want. If hybrid sells better, then sure, they can double down on it and get rid of the non hybrid option. It certainly feels like these companies are just going all in on electric and hybrid on these sports cars without even seeing what the target audience actually wants.
I think this is gonna be a fun dynamic car. The new Civic Hybrid is great, the same powertrain is in the Accord & CR-V. The CR-V is AWD, so this is possible for the Prelude. I think the S+ Shift feature will be exactly like the Ioniq 5 N's simulated gearbox. Honda's hybrid system already has NO transmission. SavageGeese on RUclips goes pretty in depth, including a track test of the Civic Hybrid.
This is the car people really want. Looks good. Rides nice. Sporty 'enough'. Great gas mileage. Honda reliability. AWD, for people who lives where it snows. Makes it a fantastic daily car. So glad Honda didn't focus on 0-60 times, or track capabilities, etc. 99.9% of people don't care about that. Now, all Honda has to do to make this a success, is NAIL THE PRICING. If this is some $60k luxury pos, it won't sell. But I'll be first in line if it's close to $30k.....

I hope the hybrid becomes-as you mentioned about torque-part of the excitement of driving rather than a sacrifice for economy. The NSX had, from what I hear, a fantastic hybrid system. It looks fantastic, especially for a $35k sports coupé with Honda quality.

Love how Honda and Toyota switch between one making hits and one taking Ls. Toyota is making hit after hit, so it looks like Honda is starting their Ls
So, did the press release mention where the two Motors will be located? You can assist an engine with a single motor. A whole lot cheaper, lighter and just as effective. Which is typically Honda's route. So are they going to be on the front wheels, or the rear. People have been screaming for AWD in a performance Honda for a long time. If they go on the rear, then doesn't that give us a backward NSX? With a bit less ICE. I haven't noticed the other manufacturers logo. I worked for Honda for almost three decades, and the new logo reminded me of the original from the 60s. Minus the slight cursive curve. The unframed short H appears to be throw back style as well. The prelude i think was most famous for beating ferrari and other high end sports cars in the 700 yrd slalom. The hood was so low, it was lowers than an mr2's hood. It could handle transitions really well, making it a great touge car. Even the 4th gen could beat an S2000 on touge, look at JUN racings prelude. Keep the bells and whistles off the car, make it do something amazing for drivers. Make it a small light nimble performer. Make history memorable for honda.
Well having owned a 5th gen SH Prelude for over 20 years, I'm excited for its return, but sad that you can't row the gears and it looks so sleek and not an angular long hood cab-back design like almost all previous Preludes.
If Honda had any sense in their heads, the new prelude would have a high output 4 no turbo standard and a turbo upgrade. All the hybrid does is add cost and puts this car over 30 grand.
There might be some sort of Si version down the line. The hybrid system is shared with the Civic, CR-V, & Accord which brings costs down. I'm just glad it's gonna be for sale. It's a damn good looking car, & if it comes down to Prius or Prelude, I know what I'm taking.
Yeah, except there is almost zero market for that. 90% of car buyers don't care about hp ratings. They care about size, mileage, and cost. You can whine and cry for years, but v8s are dying out for a reason.
@shikamaru281281 I think the Honda civic SI was a very good package when it was under 25 grand, most dealers couldn't get enough to sell. As far as V8s go, if an automaker can build a coupe under 30 grand with a V8 I think it would sell like crazy.

As a previous Acura/Honda fan I don't care for it; not even interested in it. Honda at this point has little to no cars to offer in coupe format so it's another reason not to buy a Honda/Acura. 4 door family sedans and SUVs are the common norm nowadays and I'd be surprised if it even sells. All the cool 2 door coupe cars are extinct in Honda’s lineup and I think this will become the next on that list, again. I find the 4th and 5th gen purest to be the most controversial between which one was a better car but this I know to be true we would all sit down together at a camp fire and agree either one is better than what’s coming. I wish they would have reserved the Prelude with the same respect they have for the Type R, S2000, and so on. You can’t input cheat code “Prelude” and then be like all is well now 👏🏻👏🏻. No sir, the new one better be half the car the old “ones” were. I see you 4th geners! About to jump on me. Anyways, thanks for the coverage but I’ll pass. I’m enjoying my ILX right now. Not the car I wanted but 10 times better than what I expected. Long story short I didn’t even know they existed how far I’m removed from the game but some cool guy texting rear ended my last car. Rip….🪦 and my mother in law informed me they had this come in as a trade in. 17 43k miles fkn immaculate one hour, and I got them to come off five grand, I’ll take it. I’ve been at Honda (mother plant)for 19yrs. We are on a down spiral I feel we just can’t get right. I feel like we are too scared to be aggressive like we used to be back in the day.
I currently have a stock 10th Gen Civic Si, and I've been wanting to get myself into a RWD car like the BRZ/GR86 or Miata, but as I'm getting older I'm starting to think I need to look in a different direction. Like I've had my car for nearly 5 years and haven't had the chance to go to an autocross or track, my daily commute 26 miles, so for me, as much as I like going through gears myself I realistically just need something that handles well with good fuel economy. So this new Prelude kinda fits the bill, essentially if it shares the rumored suspension components with the Type R, and the simulated gear shifting could be fun. Still do need to wait and see how good it is first though, I am still a little optimistic!

The problem is that people who drive hybrids do so because a car is A-to-B for them and they want to save money. They're not looking to buy an unpractical 2-door coup. This just shows how out of touch Honda is -- they haven't learned anything from the failure of the NSX reboot.

I owned and loved my 5th gen for more than 7 years. It had its ups and downs but in the end one of my favorite Hondas I’ve had. I’ve had a lot. I don’t think they will be able to capture that love and feeling that people had for those cars including myself but to be fair it’s difficult for automotive companies right now. Look at the Integra, Civic, Integra I mean lol. That’s how far we’ve come from the GSR B18C1 days ladies and gentlemen and you can’t go back to that due to the Governments foot I mean mandates on their necks. Hated the car for weeks literally. Then it grew on me.
I think the concept looks good, and I'm glad to see the Prelude return
Nice review David! 5th gen had an analog dash. I had a 97 sh …it was fun
This car will be invisible to buyers
Can’t please everyone
I’ve been at Honda (mother plant)for 19yrs. We are on a down spiral I feel we just can’t get right. I feel like we are too scared to be aggressive like we used to be back in the day.
This thing's gonna faceplant. Hard.
Without a Manual transmission Yes, It's actually a JOKE
