To add on to the comments of others, Gary Numan's importance and influence on modern music simply can't be overstated. His music made it OK to experiment with keyboards, guitars, and electronic beats. Everyone from Nine Inch Nails to Depeche Mode, Muse, Coldplay, and many new-ish artists cite Gary Numan as one of the first "electronic" artists to make it really cool to do something different. Doing a deep dive into his early music is not only a blast, but also shows a preview of what was to come in the 90's, 2000s, and later music. Also, I met him a few times and he is a really down-to-earth guy who is super humble and modest. He may not have had the major success like other artists of his time, but as you noted, his songs are iconic, and just about everyone knows "Cars."
I accidentally bought Gary's "Cars" 45lp as a teen thinking it was the cars. It had Metal in the other side. I was a fan ever since, Gary was about 40 years ahead of the times. I also caught NIN in 1990 with about 8 people in the crowd. Good times! Trent's drummer here Ilan Rubin is a MONSTER. Check his drum cam videos!
It’s cool story, Trent was inspired by Gary, then after Downward Spiral…Gary was in musical funk, and he said listening to NiN saved him and inspired him. Love those guys, and if you haven’t listened to Gary’s newer stuff please do…his daughter is gifted musically too.
I know that Things Falling Apart isn't a popular NIN remix album (with its unpleasant Starf*ckers, Inc. remixes), but you do get the studio version of Metal on there, which is great.
numan's best albums were his first 3: tubeway army, replicas, and pleasure principle. you can listen to any song from those albums and you won't go wrong. every one is novel and ahead of its time.
Check out gary numan my mane us ruin sung with his daughter persia a few years ago his new stuff is absolutely incredible hes gone full circle hes a total legend
Huge Sleep Token fan here, would love it if you guys checked out Stoneside! NIN collabed with Dillinger Escape Plan a while back and it was one of the most mind blowing performances I've seen! EDIT - I just realized you guys already watched that 😂
Cool! I was at that show. Not too often I get to say that.

The Pleasure Principle was one of the first LPs I ever purchased, and it still holds up today

The band I played in back in the early 80's played Cars. I saw Gary open for NIN a few years back amazing still!!
You should have played the second part: it was Numan's song "Cars" and the audience went f'ing NUTS!
