As much as Gary was channeling his influences like Kraftwerk, Bowie, John Foxx and Ultravox he was also accidentally inventing industrial Metal at the same time.
He wasn't influenced by Kraftwerk.
@outpost31737 Kraftwerk invented synthesised music so would have to have had some influence on EVERYONE who used one at some point
This song sold me on buying the album. When Cars made a splash around 1980 in Canada, I bought the 45 and absolutely cherished it -- and Metal was its B side.
Great b side!! Better than any of the actual "b sides" 😅
What set Numan apart was 1) he could swing in these synths songs, as Justin noted, 2) he paid remarkable attention to the timber of his sounds, and 3) he used rel instruments behind the very synthetic keys. The result was a unique sound that still had soul.
I was always sold by the non-mechanical drumming, like Joy Division
I bought it new too when I was 12, still have the 45…I listened to both sides equally.
Man I love this album. Bless Gary's weirdo heart.
In some ways GN was pulling from German bands like Kraftwerk, but he pushed their thing into a darker, dystopian sci-fi realm that foretold much of the 80's techno/dance scene.
Did you know.He does another version of this track on the Dance Album. Its called "Moral"
I'm a huge Gary Numan fan and I've really never linked the two songs besides that "moral" is one of my favourite Numan songs.
@@markpaulo269next time you listen to Moral sing the words to metal you'll make the connection 👍 I've been a Numan fan since I was 11 years old, I'm 59 this year.
IMO it's those "glassy" synth counterpoint melodies and harmonies that make Numan's sound unique and raises it above the competition. On the singe, "Cars", the way the synth lines diverge at the end of the song adds the perfect touch, for instance.
Yes Justin, this is one of those albums. 😄
🤘
Some crazy great bleak lyrics in this one. Example: " Picture this. If I could make the change, I'd like to pull the wires from the wall. Did you?" One of my favourites. Thanks for the reaction.
Gary Numan's nasal singing voice is that of a synthesizer, or perhaps of a synthesized human. Very fitting for his musical and thematic world.
Very true, his voice is like an instrument reflecting the same techno-mechanical sound
Anything from Numan is an automatic upvote for me!!
LOVE GN and JP!
Thanks for the album reaction a ton!
"Joy Circuit" is another AWESOME GN song.
Blew me away the first time I heard it.
One of the funnest songs to play on guitar too.
Stay cool JP.
So it's 2023 and this is still one of my go-to must-dance party songs when goth is in the air and metal is, well...
I love all the analog synths...actual people playing...I saw him early 79...was wowed live
I bought this when it came out and have loved it since then
i bought this album on vinyl back in 1982. never understood this song until you just interpreted it.
The Nine Inch Nails cover of this is great too, as are the live performances when Gary and NIN teamed up.
I think 'M.E.' is up next? That's my favourite song on this album, despite being kinda slow and dragging and not being played too well either 😅
And thank you for your always good vibes, Justin! 😊👍
It's 'Complex' next.
@@peter-ess - Oh! Okay! 😅 And thank you, Peter! 😀👍 That's a good one, too! 😊
@@peter-ess - And it's 'Films' after 'Complex' and only then 'M.E.'! 😆
Looking forward to M.E. too.
I love that song!!
Metal is the natural sequel to Cars and should have been the next single. I love Complex but in terms of chart success Metal would have gone straight to number one.
I just love the cool sound of early Gary Numan 🙂
Evening?
For starters it doesn't happen at some universal specific time every day. Right on the Equator (for instance in the city whose inhabitants sometimes call Nairobbery) it's going to happen sometime before 6 every day of the year (and dawn is going to start a bit before sunrise, so, before 6AM). In parts of Norway, around Midsummer, it doesn't happen - or maybe it merges with dawn - not something I've seen. In Northern Europe it seems to start at about 10PM in the Summer (and I've heard it's all over by 4PM in the Winter, but I've managed to avoid experiencing that firsthand).
In the Cape of Good Hope, evening is winding up at about 8 PM for much of the Summer, but along the muddy grey-green Limpopo, I think by 7 it's already dark, no matter the season.
I think in the South of the South of the South Island of New Zealand, Summer evenings end at 11PM (and then just a few hours later, the dawn breaks).
I think maybe it's only evening-proper until just after the Sun has gone down, starting when it's low enough in the sky to turn it a dark blue, and put some peach tints on the clouds? And then after that it's "twilight", maybe? Sometimes I actually go and look this stuff up; that's why I'm blathering on, so. (And as you can see, I tend to forget what I found out, every time.)
And if you're thinking (oh no?!) *Not Again* , so did *Shawn Lane* ruclips.net/video/8eDV4fJcRUI/видео.html
Hey JP, old chum. I have been known from time to time to open up about the WOW moments of my teenage years on your esteemed channel. The Pleasure Principle was one of them. Just...the otherness of it spoke to the callow youth I once was (and still am on occasion).
Also, Cedric Sharpley and Paul Gardiner (both RIP) are one of my favourite rhythm sections ever. Such muscularity amongst all them gorgeous Moogs.
Takes me back to being a kid growing up, loved Numan back then but totally misunderstood by the music industry / media etc. His music is now revered and much copied which was unimaginable back then. This song is just epic, atmospheric and timeless.
Oooooo.... love this album.
There is an album before replicas known as the blue album it's that album he first went into record a new wave/punk album but famously discovered a moog in the room touched a button and was instantly amazed with the resulting sound. So he there then added some synths sound to that album. It's also a great album lyrically very dystopian but it's like watching the formation of replicas and then The machine age albums so it too is worth a listen.
The Blue Album...
@@trpsarge I said that! Ha ha ha ha👽👽👽
@@daviddeath6029 nice to see the edutainment feature works🤣
His third album is actually called telekon which is brilliant dance is is fourth album and I agree with the recommendation of that album too.
Dance is not danceable at all but it's a great one.
@@Alix777. I agree when I first bought it as a boy I did not appreciate as much as I did telekon etc but now I rate it as one of his best albums.
gary numans early music reminds me of some alien abductee who came back from his ordeal and made music
All of his music seems to be composed as if he sees it through the eyes of an android.
The video for this was filmed at my Dad's Electrical Switchgear workplace and my Dad got to meet him 😊
Cedric Sharpley was the best thing that ever happened to Gary, his drums are amazing on this album.
Numan influenced Africa bambata etc with his hooks and bass lines bambata does a version of metal.
Actually, the musical direction logically follows the lyrics because musically it sounds very robotic and metallic, but again the rhythm section keeps moving and vibrating and keeps the human aspect while at first this track seems very cold and emotionless, whereas it is far from being the case!
Justin… “nailed it!”
Hey! Glad you have arrived at this album. Check out those two songs you referenced, too. TPP has no guitar on it all, unlike Replicas. There is a track on this otherwise perfect album that I don't like, and I'm a Numan completist. Metal should have been the Cars follow up for sure. Cheers!😎
Great live vocals are great live sounds with music stage is what make great they make music for film great
Paul Gardiner, Cedric Sharpley R.I.P...

Hell yah! Early Gary with his tech-synth genius. He has never waivered in his music and delivery. Check out "My Name is Ruin".
Prevening! is the term we like to use. Love the GN. You are plugged in! (he he he he he he)
I like the contrast to what Eno is doing. Both synth and vocals, but very different.
NIN did a great cover of this as a b-side/EP cut, and later performed their version live with Numan himself.

Its even reminiscent of early Adam & The Ants
The link in the description is to "Airlane".
One of my faves from this album. :)
Can't wait for "Films" - probs my favourite GN - beautiful track
In the twilight, the workers, done for the night. Leaving in their Metal machines, arriving back to their castles of dreams. To Plastic Fantastic Lovers, and the illusory moans and screams, of The Pleasure Principle! 😁--✌️&♥️
check out a live version they are epic
Gary Numan Metal - 1979
I would also recommend Numan's third album 'Dance'. The title is misleading as it's some of his most experimental stuff.
Slowcar to China is one of Numan's masterpiece.
Dance was the 5th album here in the UK. All great albums to be honest!!
@@leemcarthur4334 5th? Was it delayed or something?
@@Wilss
No. The confusion is in the fact Dance was the third album under the name of Numan as a solo artist, but the fifth if you include the two Tubeway Army albums.
He has a steely detached vocal!
Better than the other song
Now grab his new album and compare!
Would it be a trifle flippant to sing
"Waz it U or waz it Me Or was it X or Zee?"
over this? Such a fine line between hip-dom and parody. I enjoyed both but prefer the parody frankly, Mr Shankly.
Also, would it be inappropriate to suggest "She blinded Me With Science" helped music fans regard Thomas Dolby as nothing more than a Nerdy One Hit Novelty Wonder? In the same vein, was I wrong to label Gary Numan as "soulless" back in 1979? Judging by this, the Jury's still out.
His voice. Does it have A Soul?
Dolby Noise Reduction or Numan Nu-Metal?
Both!
Don't forget Randy Newman either. Unless of course we've heard too much of You've Got a Friend in me which will probably condemn him to the

You should do yourself a service and be the first reactor on youtube to do a reaction video to The Christians. Nothing to do with religion, but the brothers surname! "Forgotten town" or "Hooverville" Is a good place to start, but any song is!
Good suggestion! 😀👍 I had their LP, a long time ago. 'Born Again' was my favourite song on it 😊
