I used to work in a deli with a guy who loved this song. He'd constantly sing this while we were shutting things down. The song is so great that I never got tired of him singing it.
What about Numan & The Arms other songs? I hate that. I do get tired of it so overplayed plus Gary Numan & The Arms wrongly labeled a One-Hit Wonder in U.S. and Canada and that is not overseas in several countries not just U.K. why the U.S. Market sucks. Most of the masses will never understand the importance of him and the band then or even know he has new music out with a different band since the 90's which I love. I still lean more to the older Numan & The Arms made me the Numanoid I am.
Fitting. It's important to understand how Gary Numan & Tubeway Army were a direct result of Bowie's _Low_ & Kraftwerk. It was both who put synth keyboards into the hands of the punks.
This was the big single off the album, and back when it first came out it was like an alien had landed. Such an amazing sound. Very influential track. The whole sound of it is great, but for it's the synth harmonies that make it - the way the high lead line goes in the "wrong" direction and splits at the end, and the overlaying of different melodies as counterpoints. Looks like the little otters enjoyed it too!
That's sad this is not the best song he did with the band at all sad classic rock lover the asshole Phil at Best Buy said the same thing fuck classic rock to Numan and the boys old and new music.
The b-side to Cars, Assylum, is one of the creepiest instrumentals you will ever hear! I highly recommend. It's included on all the re-issued TPP CD's along with several other great bonus tracks. In the US, Metal was the b-side, which really should have been it's own a-side imho. Cheers!
I heard sounds (ideas) from this song in at least a couple of the other songs on the album. You can definitely tell that Gary Numan had a theme with this album. I LOVE this song - no wonder it was a hit in its day!
With all the amazing tunes he's done over the decades I always thought it a shame that he's mostly thought of as "That Cars guy". I mean, it's not a bad song but it's more "catchy pop" than his usual "epic".
Back when the LP was released, this was just another song on this fantastic album.. Being a standout song and the hit single, it wasn't long before it became huge.. My favorite is the next track..
At my age this is the song that I’ve heard 100,000,000 times. And that’s just when it first came out. It nearly kept me from listening to the rest of the album. But I’m glad I did.
Damn!!! Driving down the street, and this burrowing little ear-worm, made itself at home in my dome. Swerved into oncoming "Cars", almost didn't get home. Where me and my animals can be alone!😁🚗🚘🚑!!!&❤
A simplistic depth to the lyrics as well as being eternally catchy (though when he performs live it has come to be something of an obligation for him to play and fans to listen to, as his newer stuff is where the party is at and rightly so). With this album closing it would be great to see you react to the next album 'Telekon' which completes the 'Machine trilogy' after 'Replicas' and 'The Pleasure Principle' as it is how Gary reacts badly to his fame, making it the most human of the 3. *The following couple of albums 'Dance' and 'I Assassin' may also appeal to fans of David Sylvian/Japan as Mick Karn features on the 'Dance' album as well as a fellow bass icon Pino Palladino on the 'I Assassin' album. They are a change of direction and style as Numan is something of a chameleon, so everything up to 'Berserker' is worthy and then miss a few years to the very DIY album 'Sacrifice' and carry on with the subsequent albums that take him towards ever darker, atmospheric and beautifully filmic material with his most recent release 'Intruder'.
I was living in England when this came out, it was huge. He had lots more hits over there but I don't think he got much traction in the US. I like his next album "Telekon" even more than this one, very memorable melodies. He released 3 singles from it.
I'm kind of relieved video (or at least MTV) seems to be a thing of the past. I always just wanted to see the band performing, even if miming. I never wanted to see a mini-movie.
I think one album that you should react to the entire thing of, should be "Bloodletting" by Concrete Blonde. That entire album is, to me, 5 stars and 2 thumbs up.
It's a great track sampled and covered by thousands but it's success distracted the public from his other work and he became known as a one hit wonder which us why I sort of now hate this song 😮
@@johncarr2806 I know I'm one of his biggest fans what I am saying is the song actually worked against him because it became all he was known for by people who are not fans.
The song that made me discover Gary Numan. As fresh as the day it came out. Still beats the heck out of most of today's output.
Everyone talks about the synth, but what I always loved was the drum work on this tune.
Cedric really puts the groove in Cars.
Justin, I would have been surprised if you hadn't heard this song before. One of, if not the most, iconic songs of that era.
Was into Numan from the very beginning back in the 70’s. Back then he reminded us of Bowie.

Crazy how fresh it still feels, huh?
Definitely
Have you heard him with Tubeway Army?.... Are Friends Electric is a pretty good track.
he has already reacted to the whole Replicas album, Check it out!
Cars was the very first single I bought.

I used to get Gary Numan and Randy Newman confused. "I love L.A. ... here in my car."
That's sad this is not the best song he did with the band at all sad classic rock lover the asshole Phil at Best Buy said the same thing fuck classic rock to Numan and the boys old and new music.
Love this song. Though I don't usually recommend covers, check out the live version of this with Gary and NIN - it really takes this song up a notch.

Fantastrack as usual Justin. I also like "Down in the Park" by Gary Numan
Down in the Park 👍
Thats a good one :)
This song made Gary a one-hit wonder in the US.
I don't think any of his other songs got airplay here.
Which is sad, because they should play more of him. Especially some of his newer stuff.
Back when the LP was released, this was just another song on this fantastic album.. Being a standout song and the hit single, it wasn't long before it became huge.. My favorite is the next track..
He came up with that one after he'd just bought a new bass guitar and says that opening riff was the first thing he played on it, too 😊
I thought you might know this one. A big UK number 1 hit single, but I think it went top 10 in the US as well. Absolutely iconic track.
Been waiting on this one. One of my absolute favorite GN songs.
alienation! that's the word you are looking for
Ty Keith!
Same. Didn't know he did this popular song.
Always crashing in the same car.
Hey Justin! My favorite GN song! It jams!🚕🚖🚗🚘🚙😎

Ya gotta review his "Splinter" album next. Totally different, LOADED with emotion, and even more awesome :)
LOL! I often use "slapp" like Davie504 myself and also pronounce 'honest' with an audible 'h' sometimes 😄
Classic !!!
Enjoying your reaction to this very much.

Check out the Gary Numan , David Sylvian (Japan) connection, a rather interesting tale.
I'll have to look for that!
I don`t like accompanying videos to 99% of my favourite tunes, but the video for this one was quite, good, imo

If you want to hear Gary singing in an isolationist tone listen to Telecon, the album following PP.

Most Played Song by Gary Numan
JP there is a 60hz hum coming from your mic, probably need to clean your cord connections.
Ty Reagan, I've fixed it now but it may show up in a few future videos that I've recorded :( Sorry for that
Is it me or did Numan use the exact same synth patch on every song on this album?
