Trust me on this. If you decide you love your saab enough to replace a worn turbo you MUST drop the sump and clean the oil pickup filter. If you don't do this your brand new turbo will be junk in no time at all. If you are willing to spend a grand then stump up the extra 300 to do this. You will thank me.

Interesting video but, since I own the same model I am interested in how many miles this car has done. What I do find is that the PCV and EGR systems contaminate the oil alarmingly quickly. This triggers the check engine light. You can confirm this by pulling the engine oil dipstick and smelling the oil. Long before it gets totally black it will smell contaminated by recycled gases. If you continue too long with contaminated oil in this way the effect of the reduced lubrication will be most felt at the turbo and camshaft. Also, if carbon is allowed to build up in the oil pump pickup filter then oil pressure will also drop off markedly and this effect is dramatically accelerated. The preventive maintenance solution is regular oil changes - every 3k miles or so is best and make sure you always use full synthetic oil of the correct viscosity. The low (W) number is the important one. The higher number (hot) can be as high as you like because oil thins exponentially when hot. Too high a W number will reduce lubrication when cold because flow rate will be reduced along narrow oilways. So you will get a longer engine life from a 5W-50 than a 5W-20 although the latter will give you a few more MPG. 20W-50 will flow too slowly when cold so should be avoided.

Problem with the turbo failure on a SAAB 93 is that the turbo is not the problem. The problem was the catalytic converter located directly under the sump. It heats the oils to baking point and those flakes of dried oil them get caught up in the pick up strainer and restrict the flow of oil. There was no real cure for this other than to remove the strainer itself or poke a few holes in the strainer. I had many SAAB's over the years and loved every one of them. Towards the end though they were very disappointing with silly faults like the rubberised finish on the dashboard and controls and buttons which came off and made the whole cockpit look messy. Also if you were not familiar with the car then you would not know which button did what due to the missing decals as the rubberised finish fell off. All good things come to an end. RIP SAAB.
You have to very particular about the oil you use and the maintenance schedule. I always used the full synth Mobil 1 0w-40 Euro. I had a 01 9-3 base that had over 205k miles, though I did replace the turbo myself at 105K replacing the Garrett standard with the Mitsubishi TD04 which was more reliable. I checked the strainer myself at that point and cleaned it up. Very important to also get the Evap system update that was subject to a recall. The engine was running well at 205K but was in an accident that made it cost prohibitive to fix.

Mine is still running at 21 years, it's a better drive than most modern cars and the engine as stock can develop 40% more power with a simple ECU reprogram.
actually turbos can last as long as the engine I removed mine at 350K miles and its still in spec with no shaft play.. again its the oil and maintenance..
Jorybabbs -3 things are key to turbo life .When stopping in motorways for fuel allow the engine to Idle for a minute before refilling .When switching off never blip the throttle first .And change the oil and filter at half the recommended intervals -that way the turbo will.outlive the rest of the car -Saab turbors are more sensitive than most especially to degraded oil .
Hello there, Thanks for education. I have 2003 Saab 95 arc V6. has 2 ignition cassettes. I have Tech 2 tool which shows me that cylinder 1 is knocking count 6000 other all 5 cylinders ok. So I changed all plugs and switched the cassettes, rear cassettes with cyl 1 now moved to front. cleared all knocks count. Drove 65 miles and checked 0- knock counts on all cylinders with same gas of Costco 91 octane,. After additional 65 miles. now cyl 6 has 6000 knock count. and others are fine. Does that means this ignition cassette is bad..? I like to have your opinion or Will it go away with 93 gas Thanks. Don't like to spend money on new Cassette. Very expansive. Thanks and my regards.
I don't get how people let their car's engine go under-lubricated... My 9-5 2.3 t's engine just holds 4 liters of 0W40 - which is expensive If you let the garage fill in theirs but only costs 6-10 € a liter if you buy online. Infinitely cheaper than letting the engine or the turbo suffer...

I have a 2006 saab 9-3 2.0t. On cold start it revs up to 1000 rpm then it bogs down and sounds like it's about to die off. It jumps back up and then is fine. Only on first start of the day sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. No matter the temperature. If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.
Why don't they include labour costs in the full costs, there's no way they'd make money paying for labour. You can turn profit on any car if it's labour free, this is bullshit.
rookie. clean or replace turbo feed and return lines to ensure longevity. changing just the turbo alone and leaving the oil lines is a bad recipe. customer will be back within 5 years
I would love to know what turbo you went with. I did a turbo replacement on my 2000 base 9-3 and went with a Stigen. It seems good quality. My 2001 SE is approaching 100k original miles and will likely be needing a new unit in the not too distant future (if I can contain the rampant body corrosion).

Why not just replace the core with a half decent Mellet one? At around £160 and an hour to fit it's a hell of alot cheaper than a refurb which may well contain a Chinese core
Garage where I my car was for an oil change after vandalized with dirty oil poured in oil system, after 500 miles synthetic oil change, and came back without turbo. Company intentionally made a negative situation, and disputed charge I did not approve and they ended up keeping it for the long week end,. using up quarter tank of gas and setting trip o meter to zero. And has a different battery, no Turbo and the oil is black as ink ten times worse than taken which makes me wonder if they switched engines. Had 47K on a 2005 Arc 0-5.. The company said they would wave the charges since I was unhappy having my car for total of five days, for only oil change fee and bogus diagnostic fee that was not reflective of what the adjuster wrote down. Trying to track hi dow to see where he saw the car. A body shop? There was also a drivers window off track when the vandalism took place tool they did not fix. I had found a number 14 socket under the hook sitting in front and lid not latched down was tip off something different and asked them to check that nothing had been loosened. They told me my "car had not been vandalized." The Christian Automotive sent a tow company that refuses to give me any records that they ever had my car. They picked it up and driver/owner got in seat to write down mileage but now says he did not write it down. Want chain of command who he signed it over to and where. And records the same for when he returned it. Should have never let that car out of sight. He called police who called me and said I was harassing him and got his address, and that there was alaw theat they did not have to write down mileage! Asked him to give me the number of the law so I could confirm that. I checked out to see if the name on his business card was licensed and got their address. Police tell me I cannot contact him again. Are they all in on it her in Albq/Rio Rancho area. I feel I got scammed and my engine was harvested. Black oil in it now makes me wonder if it is even my low mileage engine, since my oil was not black as ink. Have photos and paper towels which I saved with the colors and stains from the oil. He should have a signed release where it was left and same when they picked it up and called police telling them I was harassing them asking for receipt. Chain of control, and accountability. Police said a law they did not have to write the mileage on the car when taken. Asked the officer what the number on that law as. I am really upset over this. Am a 77 year old single retired nurse and feel I got scammed big time, and want to get this sorted out. Not sure where the Turbo is so I can see it but seems it is out of sight under engine. Smelled burning oil when drove it and learned if they take turbo off that oil can run into exhaust and cause that. Hoped it was another car driving near me. HELP.. Can anyone send me any advise on who to get to validate the engine not from my car or what actually is different. I now the battery is not the same, and an undersize battery is on the tray in this engine. Judith You can send reply that I get and can give more contact info. Ever hear of this happening. A 2005 with 47K is most valuable, and it ran great. Love my car but now is is not my car.
Hello 👋 I respond to you in good faith because you seem distressed. Firstly you should take your car to a trusted mechanic and ask them to give it a look. I wouldn't give them information about what you think has happened, they will soon see if the engine has been changed or if oil is leaking. Secondly the chances of a mechanic shop swapping out your engine is extremely rare, saabs have little value except for a few rare models none of which were made in 2005. Also your 2005 saab wouldn't run without a turbo so rest assured it's there. I understand you feel like you have been ripped off and that starts a chain of thinking that makes you think what else have they done to your car, but realistically I don't know a single mechanic who would deliberately abuse the car of a 77 year old women. Its quite likely someone spilled oil whilst filling the car with oil and that's caused the smell. Take this car to a trusted mechanic and you will soon get some feedback, if there are signs that this car has a much older engine in it he will be able to tell and you will be able to use that as evidence to prosecute the garage. I have to be honest, it's sounds like you have not been treated very well at all, however that does not constitute someone removing your turbo or swapping out your engine. Also you mentioned the battery, batterys can be different sizes but still the correct power for your car. It is not ideal to have a smaller battery and it should be fastened correctly and securely, however its quite likely its a new battery. The value of battery's are based on output not really size, there is nothing to gain in swapping them out. I really do hope you can move on from this. Its hard to trust again and we all love our cars. All the best.
A bigger problem is junk getting into the key plug and preventing insertion or extraction. I simply removed the barrel wafers entirely. Realistically no one wants to steal a 20 year old car. I also found turbo rebuild kits that are a less costly alternative to replacing the entire turbo.

That thing with the reverse lock out on the stick shift Saabs confused me so much at first. Apparently they designed the stick cars like that as early as the 70s.

could have rebuilt or had someone rebuild the turbo for less even with a new impeller
@Scott B not hard, but not always guaranteed to be successful, also cannot balance the impeller the way they do at a turbo rebuilder

Still running my 2000 9-3SE. Full repaint about five years ago. Just hit 78k miles yesterday. Still love it.
Should have done a TD04 swap. Garrett turbos in these cars are total garbage.
Never said what the original problem was: ?misfire ?power ?stall ?poor mileage ?start up issue ?
Ive had a few turbos with some shaft play yet still performed very well and no smoke.

The Christian Automotive sent a tow company that refuses to give me any records that they ever had my car. They picked it up and driver/owner got in seat to write down mileage but now says he did not write it down. Want chain of command who he signed it over to and where. And records the same for when he returned it. Should have never let that car out of sight. He called police who called me and said I was harassing him and got his address, and that there was alaw theat they did not have to write down mileage! Asked him to give me the number of the law so I could confirm that.

He should have a signed release where it was left and same when they picked it up and called police telling them I was harassing them asking for receipt. Chain of control, and accountability. I am really upset over this. Am a 77 year old single retired nurse and feel I got scammed big time, and want to get this sorted out. Not sure where the Turbo is so I can see it but seems it is out of sight under engine. Smelled burning oil when drove it and learned if they take turbo off that oil can run into exhaust and cause that. Hoped it was another car driving near me. HELP.. Can anyone send me any advise on who to get to validate the engine not from my car or what actually is different. I now the battery is not the same, and an undersize battery is on the tray in this engine.
Judith You can send reply that I get and can give more contact info. Ever hear of this happening. A 2005 with 47K is most valuable, and it ran great. Love my car but now is is not my car.
Hello 👋 I respond to you in good faith because you seem distressed. Firstly you should take your car to a trusted mechanic and ask them to give it a look. I wouldn't give them information about what you think has happened, they will soon see if the engine has been changed or if oil is leaking. Secondly the chances of a mechanic shop swapping out your engine is extremely rare, saabs have little value except for a few rare models none of which were made in 2005. Also your 2005 saab wouldn't run without a turbo so rest assured it's there. I understand you feel like you have been ripped off and that starts a chain of thinking that makes you think what else have they done to your car, but realistically I don't know a single mechanic who would deliberately abuse the car of a 77 year old women.
Its quite likely someone spilled oil whilst filling the car with oil and that's caused the smell. Take this car to a trusted mechanic and you will soon get some feedback, if there are signs that this car has a much older engine in it he will be able to tell and you will be able to use that as evidence to prosecute the garage.
I have to be honest, it's sounds like you have not been treated very well at all, however that does not constitute someone removing your turbo or swapping out your engine.
Also you mentioned the battery, batterys can be different sizes but still the correct power for your car. It is not ideal to have a smaller battery and it should be fastened correctly and securely, however its quite likely its a new battery. The value of battery's are based on output not really size, there is nothing to gain in swapping them out.
I really do hope you can move on from this. Its hard to trust again and we all love our cars. All the best.
A bigger problem is junk getting into the key plug and preventing insertion or extraction. I simply removed the barrel wafers entirely. Realistically no one wants to steal a 20 year old car. I also found turbo rebuild kits that are a less costly alternative to replacing the entire turbo.
I have a Saab 9-5 2.3 Turbo 2005 with 171000 miles I've been driving it for 3 years already long story short needs work to make it smooth again I live in Brooklyn New York does anyone have any idea the right person to work with?

You forgot to drop the oil pan and clean the sump oil pick up if you dont do that the turbo will have a drastically shorter lifespan
seriously, why can't you just let the episode finish ffs? every time.
That thing with the reverse lock out on the stick shift Saabs confused me so much at first. Apparently they designed the stick cars like that as early as the 70s.
