India can catch up, look at where China, Singapore & Korea were in the past and how much they advanced. India can do the same if they embrace the key reforms and policies that allowed these other countries to rapidly advance. India also has a much younger population and can absorb alot of supply chains as west pivots away from China, which is a big benefit.

    Dear Palki Sharma,

However, when discussing China, I feel you missed acknowledging their brilliance in planning their EV market decades ago. While I understand your concerns, I think a brief mention of their strategic foresight would have been fair. Although China’s government is not democratic, their leadership deserves some recognition for their achievements.

I think it’s a mix of ignorance, jealousy, and arrogance when people can’t accept others doing the right thing just because they have different views. It’s funny how they praise China’s growth but won’t admit democracy has flaws. Instead of blaming others for being a threat, fix your own systems so no one can threaten you.
About colonialism, Britain didn’t “loot” India; they conquered it. If India was so great, why couldn’t they stop them? It’s a more of shame for India than pride for Britain. Instead of whining about the past, secure your house. Now, people are doing the same with China. China is progressing fast, and if India doesn’t wake up, the gap will only grow. I love India, but you can’t fix stupidity.

How long can Europe keep up with the tariffs? Tariff is but a short term measure to keep the more competitive goods away while the domestic producers are catching up. Tariffs make imports more expensive, hence forcing consumers to buy local. However, sooner or latter. consumers would realize that they have been ripped off by the government and the local manufacturers. That means a revolt in the voting stations.
Australia used to have an auto industry popped up by tariffs. Now it has none. Why? Because local manufacturers are becoming lazy and less innovative, relying on tariffs to keep them competitive. Australians walked away from the Holden and Ford, and went for the Japanese brands despite a higher price tag. Why? Because Japanese brands are better made, more reliable and economical.
The EU is doing song and dance about Climate Change, yet is turning away from the practical means to achieve it, ie. EV. India can benefit from EV hugely. Chinese cities used to be dangerous to live in because of the smog. Now the skies are clear because of EV.

There are 2 things happening here: 1. modern industrial productivity is so high that fewer workers are needed to produce for the whole world. This is seen in unemployment among the young and educated across China, India, Indonesia etc. This a a global issue with automation. 2. China's so called overcapacity is a reflection of scale and efficient industrial organisation. It out produces in nearly all sectors, which other countries find it hard to compete. Chinese labour costs are not cheap, but the ability to integrate the entire production chain efficiently is key to their success. while consumers around the world benefit from cheaper and better goods, competitors like Nissan and Honda will have to restructure and improve their efficiency to remain competitive.

@tooltalk Correct. Sometimes, tariffs cause depression, which is much, much worse. A classic example would be the 1930 Smoot-Hawley tariffs by another infamous Republican administration. In the long run, protectionist policies always backfire, mostly because they disincentivize innovation when "creative destruction" would be the better alternative. What saved the US was the war in Europe, which is partly why the US has been a warmongering military-industrial complex ever since. At any rate, despite their ineffectiveness, tariffs are an easy sell to the economically illiterate American public, a highly disproportionate part of which trolls RUclips from their moms' basements. Sound familiar?

History remembers those who innovate, like those who used horses as war weapons, not those who walked blindly.
