Have owned 2 for 15 years and still think they produce incredibly natural, "analog" images with excellent colours. None of that plastic/fake digital look. One mirror fell off very recently. Easy fix. I'll continue to use these as long as they last. Can't imagine needing anything else, personally. My wife is moving on to mirrorless...
Richard Barley D3s files are perfectly usable even at 6400. You're going to love that dual card slot and lightning fast shutter response. Good read : ryanbrenizer.com/2009/12/review-nikon-d3s/
This video was a breath of fresh air. I love hearing real photographers speak. I have a 5Dmk2, and I love it. I'm a hybrid shooter, so the classic wouldn't work for me… plus I have other cameras for that, but after listening to your breakdown of the Mk1, I'm intrigued.
5d classic af is not great, at least when I began using it with a nifty fifty wide open I got a lot of missed focus. I then switched to only using the centre point, that improved focusing immediately. Otherwise I love the camera. To me the iso range is fine. I hate auto iso, so the 5dc lacking auto iso is a good thing for me (actual it has auto iso in full auto). I usually use aperture priority so that I only have to spin one control wheel to set exposure, but I think you are saying I should expose for the shadows on a Canon 5d, so perhaps I should be using full manual more? As you are so experienced with this camera I would really appreciate some tutorial videos on how to set up and use the camera. At least give us some tips for the 5dc usage, such as exposure. Many thanks. PS just brought a 5d mk3 so I'll be comparing it with the 5dc shortly. Very surprised with your comments about the af system as I thought that was meant to be the main improvement over the 5d mk2. PPS have you considered make a video with Canon lens recommendations as well? I'm sure it would be popular.
Thanks for your feedback it helps me a lot, I have not been making videos for a while now as I going to concentrate on making short paid online courses. I think a 5D classic course could work if there is enough demand. If I produced a very detailed 5D classic course what do you think would be a fair price to pay. What courses would you all like to see me produce?
Classic.. be reminded that the Nikon F3 was the professional camera choice for film for decades. It was in production for 21 years. You don't need to upgrade that often. Get good with what you do have so it's like the back of your hand.
Great in dept classic camera review! 5D is still a gem. I believe my 6D is going to be a classic too. But it's the internet and the social value that forcing the modern photographer to use the "newest ans the bestest" set of eqipment. I've got a friend who shoot professionally, and his new client usually asked, is he using a set L lens with 5D3?" People knows the latest camera from the internet nad expect that every professional should use one. Personally, we both love to use a bit outdated camera and invest into a better lens.
That's exacty why I still keeping my cannon gears! Unfortunatly where I came form, the camera equipment rental is not ...very good. Renting the equipment is fine but rentting the high end camera is not really worth the wait and they money youll get paid from the job.
Hi Richard and thanks for the video. I very much agree with you on that one shouldn´t spend crazy money on the latest gear. One thing I have to completely disagree on is the AF on 5d3. I have been a proffessional photog since long before the original 5d was introduced. When I got it I new that was it! And it was fine for a lot of years. The 5d2, I agree, was not really an improvement at all. However, the 5d 3 is brilliant and for me especially because of its AF. I still keep one of the original 5d´s and I shoot it from time to time. Every single time I use it, however, I find that the AF is just nowhere near to what I´m used to with the 5d3. It´s just night and day for me. I can rely on all the AF points of the mark 3, whereas I can hardly rely on the centre one of the mark 1. You have quoted Jessica Claire in your review so you must be aware that she actually hated the 5d for its AF...If it wasn´t for the AF I would probably still use the 5d today. As it is, the mark 3 is a new classic for me. Maybe you don´t have a problem with the 5d because you don´t use fast prime lenses..? I can imagine with f4 zooms I could still click away with the 5d today:) Nothing wrong with f4 zooms, just let´s be fair here. 5d just sucks with fast primes, even if you didn´t have to focus and recompose. That´s my experience even if I still love and keep the original 5d...nostalgia, maybe..
Thanks for your comments, this sort of information will help people make there decisions. I think the af on my early 5d mk3 was not right, as I know everyone likes the mk 3 andso it must be great
I use my mkII for landscapes and I tend to manual focus. I usually take my 7DII with me in case I see any wildlife and I prefer using my 7DII with my Sigma 18-35 f1.8 with filters. I’ve always thought it was my Sigma lens that somehow handled filters better but listening to you it could it could be the colour palette on the 5DII. But I thought all Canon sensors were originally set with help from Kodak to get the colour palette right. It’s supposed to be Canon's strong point, that’s why they are so popular with landscape photographers. I also have the 5DIII that I only use in the studio due to clumsiness caused by a health condition, and I’ve bounced my 5DII from great height more than once. I find the 5DIII for still life in the studio almost too perfect that it becomes clinical and the camera loses some of its personality. I sell digital prints from the 5DII at around a ratio of 3:2 over prints from the 5DIII, but I think that’s the popularity of landscape over still life. If I had a website, which I won’t have due to my health, the ratio might be different. The dual pixel autofocus can literally get on a crumb in one go, and its tack sharp. As a photographer who also shoots analogue being too sharp isn’t always a good thing to me, I prefer to go for the 'feel' of an image, but not to the degree of KoudeIka's work from the 70s. I'm presuming this video was made before all the a9 problems came to the surface, which I hope they sort soon and work on the weather proofing as it’s a camera I was really interested in when it first came out. However, a camera with severe over heating problems and not being able to use as it’s writing from the buffer isn’t much use for wildlife. However, I’m already saving for the a9II which could make all other wildlife cameras redundant.
Sorry I never replied to your comments a long time ago. I am going through my whole channel at the moment trying to reply to people. Your information is valuable to other people please keep commenting
Did you upload a video on the 5d shutter sound? I cant seem to find it and im going to purchase one soon, in one of your videos you said it's possible to tell if the shutter is old by listening to the sound, do you have a sound sample?
i put my ear up against the camera body release the shutter and wait for a clang sound. The amazing thing is mine clangs away but still keeps going. Dont worry to much
Can I use HSS (high speed sync) with compatybile Yongnuo speedlites and transmiters with classic? Or I need 5d mkII or D700 for that. Im cruently using d750 with sigma art, but im a amtour and i find out that im just scary to cary around this 3000 usd combo with me... No point for keep it - but gosh D750 amazing camera... I was thinking about sony a7, but i read its even more complicated to use it with studio lights or speedlites outdoors.
Ola! Eu gostaria de saber se a 5D clássica tem a opção de foto somente no botão de disparo. Não tem como colocar essa função de foco em algum dos botões de trás?
hi i am seriously considering purchasing an EOS 5D but when you search reviews on them, the mirror falling off comes up. Have you had any issues with this?
yes the mirrors can come off, but there are standard faults with all cameras, maybe we could find out from canon the serial numbers that were effected, if you find anything out please post a comment here to let the other subscribers know, the key is buy two bodies and just enjoy using them
Fact 1: Nikon makes incredibly less errors on their cameras. Fact 2: Canon was much more interested in selling their 5ds from Mark II on to videographers. I am a Canon user
Nikon cameras are generally harder to learn on, my students show me that every day. Canon is always making small mistakes thats how they have learnt to make the cameras for professionals. More mistakes make better cameras in the future. The R range will be amazing in a few years after they have made many mistakes. I am a big believer in making mistakes and learning.
Just bought a lovely 5D classic for £100 and love it.
thats great hope you enjoy it, my 5d classic resource page is here if you need it bit.ly/5d-free-resource-page

glad you fixed it i am still using the 5d classic
You might want to use Capture One because there you can simply change the ICC color profile and use the 5DI profile for any other, works fine!
Never have used capture one may take a look
I've got Nikons - D3 and D3s but 5D still sits in my drawer and gets used regularly :)
I am looking at the d3 s interested in what you think compared to the 5d at 3200 iso

Canon 5D immortal classic in 2022. Still going strong.
Hope I'm not too late to post a curiosity here!
The 5D Classic is reputed to produce a film look in images. Actually what is meant by that?!
Hard to explain , google 5d classic images, it’s mainly a long tonal range and soft pleasing skin tones. Some digital cameras produce poor skin

The cameras are getting to expensive now, thanks for your comment
The great thing about using Canon is you can hire equipment, if I have a demanding megerrrpixel hungry client I just hire it
