  • Broadcast journalist Shireen Abu Akleh - a renowned Palestinian American journalist who worked with Al Jazeera for more than 20 years - was a household name. She reported on the Jenin refugee camp in 2002, the war on Lebanon in 2006, and the Gaza Wars - repeatedly - between 2008 and 2021. Internationally, Abu Akleh covered multiple elections, both in the United Kingdom and the United States.
For those watching her reporting, Abu Akleh was a beacon of possibility, demonstrating that women’s voices could - and should - center news coverage, and that anything was possible for young Arab women.
On May 11, 2022, Abu Akleh was killed while on assignment covering a military raid on the Jenin refugee camp.
