I've been playing eldar since the 3rd edition, so I'm a huge fan of them. But every time I see the dialogues here, between the guardsmen, I can sense all the fear and the despair caused by being in a such a scary situation, with a 20m tall monstrous creature knocking at your door, without any possibility of saving yourself. The music enhances this, making this all real and even more grim... May Vaul bless me, I don't want to be in such a desperate situation IRL...
I think the threatening presence of the Wraithknight did for him there. One slight error was using the demolisher on the jet bikes and the hellhound on the rangers. Should have been the other way round. The flamer would autohit the Jetbikes and they would only get armour saves and maybe go after something else with the demolisher. Guard are tricky but a labour of love. So close to finishing my Valhallans:)
This is by far my favourite place on RUclips to watch batreps, please keep up the amazing work and thanks for allowing us to share the experience of these beautifully painted armies clashing on the table top :)
I'm a Guard player as well, and I have a few suggestions for James if he'd like to hear them. 1. Put some heavy weapons in your infantry squads. A combined squad of 30 men with lasguns isn't much. But if that combined squad also has three meltaguns, or maybe some missile launchers in it, then it becomes a serious threat, especially against heavy infantry like Wraithlords. If you're looking for the points, drop the Chimeras and fill your squads with bigger guns. 2. Drop one of the infantry platoons and run some veteran squads in Chimeras with meltaguns and/or plasma guns. I regularly run such a combo, and it's quite effective at dealing with monstrous creatures (including Wraithlords and Wraithknights) 3. Drop the Valkyrie and run a Vendetta instead. Three twin-linked lascannons can put some serious hurt on the enemies of the Emperor. 4. Invest in Medics. At 30 pts. each, they cost quite a bit, but they keep your commanders alive longer, which makes it harder to decapitate your army.
@ 23:00 1) You needed to roll 3 dice (taking the lowest 2) for charging over the defense line. 2) You did, indeed, forget your S10 Hammer of Wrath that auto hits at Initiative 10. 3) Close Combat attacks made against a vehicle that did not move in that turn or the turn prior hit automatically (WS ZERO; p. 76 BRB). That tank was DOA.
Great batrep, I do enjoy watching all of yours you do a great job highlighting certain moments as they happen. Also, the quote you should have used for the guard in the beginning is straight form the primer: "These "Guardians" are the Eldar citizen militia, they are not true soldiers and know nothing of war. They are like disobedient children, treat them as such."
SS82, you guys consistently play with the best looking terrain. I am quite partial to a forested board and this one looks great. Keep the reports coming, I love them.
I think James' problem is that he always waits for the enemy to come to him. I know they're guardsman and that's what they do, but it's not aggressive. To me, it seems like he boxes himself into a corner every game.
Wonderful report. I envy the scenery - each one you play on is a true masterpiece. And the armies are amazing - big fan of the Guard since the Apocalypse game. :) I think James should try out a couple of Vendettas - they're pretty awesome in taking down Wraithknights. And an Inquisitor from the new Digital Codex should fit in nicely with some Prescience for a blob squad with autocannons. A friend of mine always uses 50man Guard blob with some allied charactes that's always giving a headache to both my Eldar and Daemons. Keep up the good work, Sir! RUclips is a better place thanks to such reports.
Dont forget, that the Wraithknight Shield makes every unit in 6" surroundings take an Initiative test if he succeeds with at least one Inv Save. No matter if against shots or melee. If they dont make it their WS and BS are reduced to 1 afaik.
Just hold on, James! If the rumors are right then the new Codex: Imperial Guard is out in three months, after the forthcoming Codex: Tyranids in January. :D
Hey, great vid as always. Remember the wraithknight has a hammer of wrath attack which auto hits, so you might have penetrated that demolisher. Glad to see bright lances on your serpents. People need to realise that despite all the tl shield shots they get you have sod all AT and no survivability with AV12, especially against guard. Someone's already mentioned relentless platforms and blind tests. Keep them coming :-D
I love how guard are just such a nice army, they don't field stupidly big creatures or mega armoured troops, just tanks, guns and anything else they can throw at them, wish other armies could be like that rather than all about bringing the biggest toughest thing they have...
true, but they do have the strongest vehicles in the game i think (Tau are nice but not as heavily armed) my mate always beats me with guard, i have no idea how to fight them
mechanized veterans (3 meltas), 3 russes (one is usually pask) creed, snipers, devildog 2+ poison AP3 =( and any other thing he has the points for to add
LOL i remember exactly that striking scorpion exarc, his wave sepernt was destroyed near the aegis line on the right flank while filming meanwhile the avatar was making 2 squads of 3 bikes fearless at the back to hold objectives. Two wraithlords were running from far away left long sinde of the table and they never made into combat. I don´t rememer exactly but i think there was a wraithknight or some spiders that made into the enemy corner line but were killed fast. So this escorpion exarc was isolated with just one wave serpent providing cove fire from far away behind a hill. After his wave serpent was distroyed like 8 of 10 man of the scorpion exarc squad died on the 1st round. The 9th member died to snap fire so this that exarc was alone by himself. He killed i think they were like 3 member of the 1st squad of guardsmen and the whole squad run away the table edge. Then he faced the imperial guard CG and killed him in a duel. He stuck locked in combat with the reast of the 2nd imp guard squad, hit again, killed some and made them run killing the rest overunning them. He died at the end like a hero, if i dont remember it bad, under the fire of a 15 men imp guar squad that were walking to hold an objective on a hill. I think eldar won the game because one point or something like that, it was one of the closest games i have ever seen Why do i remember all of that? Also thx for the video. I was missing so much one of your batreps wich are the best ones out there with a huge difference by many reasons: Reeeeeally nice painting, nice tables, nice strategy, different eldar army than saimhann, really nice and peculiar way to play the game as eldar (i would like you to show how would you use a harlequin themed, not necessarily 3 units, army of 2000 points: configuration, strategies, supports... they are expensive :D) Everythig is almost always nicely represented, the nice comments between the turns, nicely selected music, nice hard opponents with nice strats and nice armies as well as yours, i have never seen a big rule mistakes and a really nice knowledge of the game. Nice fast and well expressed important rolls and not a single batrep miss all this things. Good Job and Thanks.
I've been playing imperial guard since 3rd edition and it's the most powerful it's ever been. The problem is James has missed the plot when it comes to making a competitive IG army. Ditch the special weapons, vox, upgrades, veterans, conscripts and just take bare bones infantry with heavy weapons and heavy weapons squads. Specifically heavy bolters (they shoot more then autocannons) and missile launchers (more versatile then lascannons and cheaper). Then when your putting down 45+ heavy bolter rounds and 15+ missile rounds down the board and your only at 1200 pts then you have a good foundation for a IG army. Then you can add in your fancy tanks.
Aaron Richards ya man your right about autocannons. But Conrad put well "moar dice" > "moar powa". I fined BS 3 is the biggest hump to get over as far as getting the IG to do damage. And I fined the extra strength doesn't help as much as the extra round against the targets I would fined myself shooting with autocannon/heavy bolter. Ya you could shoot beefier stuff with the autocannon, but I just tend to leave those to my missiles and tanks. That being said I totally equip the autocannon on my BS 4 infantry like a veteran/command squad. I really like the autocannon, 3 sniper veteran squad combo
picking up eldar soon for my first army,i was thinking a wraithknight with sun cannon/shield and 2 wraithguards 1 with scyths the other cannons. what do you think?
Hey everyone I am starting an Eldar army and I was wondering which untis to pick and which ones to avoid, I like the look of jetbikes! also I dont know which paint scheem to choose!
Another great game, and brilliant to see a new Eldar list. Good skills mate. One point, you robbed yourself with the guardian platforms shooting, you snap fired. These grav platforms are relentless and as such fire on full BS even if moved. I believe the unit can still battle focus with a grav platform too.
Even when blown to smithereens I think those Imperial Guard vehicles look great. Any plans do to one of your painting tutorials on that Guard color scheme?
Love watching your videos. Like the fact that you play for fun rather than win at all costs and that your armies are so well painted. I also think you sound a bit like Chris Packham (the springwatch etc presenter).
What I don't get is why don't you fire the sun cannon on the guardsmen as the WK approaches the tanks, three blast shots that scatter a bit on that piled up formation would soon turn it into a meat grinder causing the guardsmen to retreat leaving the board and abandoning their objective. Second, I've seen that in most scenarios you face a flyer; fire the twin linked scatter laser of the serpent on it making all other weapons on the model twin linked with one hit; then release the serpent shield, which bypasses the jinks cover save at S7, and see it fall down.
Subbbed!!! Love the Eldar, and Im quite happy to see no one calling them cheesy, cheap or broken in the comments. Im really enjoying how these BRs are presented and the commentary and die rolling are nicely spaced out. If you have the time and the desire please play more Space Marine reports, thanks for the videos and all your obvious hard work.
***** Tell James to check out 40k Radio. According to them, GW is releasing the Imperial Knight in March, a counterpart to the Eldar Wraithknight, which will be available to all Imperial armies. I look forward to the day when we can see one in his Imperial Guard army during your battle reports duking it out with your Wraithknight. :D
I've started to take up my eldar army again after a year or so finishing and improving my space marine army but I need a new colour scheme for the eldar. I'm thinking black with white and red gems. Any ideas?
Note for James: after watching several battle reports, I think you need to drop the defense line. I think it puts you too much in a defensive mindset; too reactive instead of proactive. Also, don't be afraid to use your infantry to protect your tanks. Meat shield tar-pits can buy your tanks an extra round of shooting. Keep up the good work gents!
That was a nail biter! I was sure, that the Eldar would fail this time, but no...i too, have the "lance curse" in more games than one...remember the Hammer of wrath on Monstrous Creature, you would have dealt with that first tank on the first try with S10...Amazing BATREP, as always!
***** And thats true, at least for normal combats. But monstruous creatures have the "Hammer of wrath" rule which inflicts one automatic hit with the strength of the monster in case they charge into combat. In the case of the Eldar big daddy that is Strength 10 against the rear armour of a vehicle, which, being 10, implies an automatic penetrating hit by just reaching it in close combat (auto hit, Str10+1D6 penetrtation = minimum 11).
Erik Mazon Also, hammer of wrath applies to all kind of enemies, no matter if they are infantry vehicle or whatever.. Only exception flyers as they can not be charged in combat.
vendetta and snipers would've been good to hunt down that wraithknight, did the troops inside the chimera fire overwatch before the wraith knight blew it up?
that turn four though. very powerful eldar army, the guard had not much chance of killing all four of those monstrous creatures and three wave serpents.
Hi guys, great batrep as usual. Looking forward to the next. I've been inspired by the work you have done guys and was thinking of trying my hand at one or two videos myself. Can you help me with some advice? What camera do you use and video software editor. I tried filming on my iphone and then editing in windows movie maker but when I output the video to mp4 the audio disappears... :( Keep up the good work and happy gaming. :)
thanks for the comments!:) Sure...my camera details are in the video description. Yes...I've had that audio problem too before!:S I'm using windows movie maker too...
According to 40k Radio, we're looking at an April release. And apparently the codex is being renamed, and will instead be "Codex: Astra Militarum." Yes, it sounds like crap, but 40k Radio has a pretty solid track record when it comes to rumors.
New to the game, was looking at starting with Eldar. Got a question, though. Why, in all this guy's videos, does he use the Avatar as an HQ? Wouldn't it be better to get a psyker?
Because he's building the army list that he likes to play regardless of whether it's the most tournament viable list or not. The Avatar is pretty strong either way though.
You should replace your Valerye with a Vendetta. Your flyers first role is to gain air superiority by taking down other flyers, then turning its guns to ground targets. 3 Twin linked lascannons will do that infinitely better then some heavy bolters. Plus its still a transport viecle. Also, you cant have a guard army without including guardsman marbo. Pask did really good in his new leman russ. Although i miss your V cannon, he was quite impressive with his new set up.
Great to watch, but I really think you get into your brothers head. Anyway, looks like you both have fun so who am I to say do anything differently. Both armies look great as well.
Please consider putting a Scatter Laser on your Sun Cannon-wielding Wraith Knight; if it hits, it twin-links the Cannon.... Also, consider removing one of the Wraith Lords and putting in 6+ Warp Spiders. Deployment-wise, I would have put the Wraith Knight on the left flank (like you did), the Avatar in the middle (again, like you did), and the Wraith Lord (I would only take one) on the right flank. Finally, a good rule of thumb I've learned to live and die by: Don't get out of the vehicle unless you're certain of the outcome.
Actually... 1) The Wraithknight DOES have a Scatter Laser. It's attached to the Suncannon. He mentions it right around 3:40. 2) There were no Warp Spiders in this list because he was deliberately making a themed army list centered around Guardians without any Aspect Warriors. He mentions that around 1:56.
The funny thing is that if there was another turn, gaunt and his guardsmen could have taken the objective held by the rangers and the guard could still have won, even with only 7 models!
Hah, you're right! Even if they hadn't been able to claim the objective, so long as they survived they could've contested it, in which case the score would've been 2-1 Imperial Guard. Geeze, it's amazing when you think about these things. Every time there's some small thing which, if it'd gone slightly differently, could've resulted in an Imperial Guard victory.
Yeah, something similar happened to me in a 500 point battle against Eldar with an Ork force. By the end of the game he still had 16 guys left while I only had 3 (He had 10 Guardian Defenders with a Shuriken Cannon, 4 Striking Scorpions, and 1 Dire Avenger Exarch, while I just had the Warboss, 1 Nob, and 1 Deffkopta). But because he forgot to grab objectives, I ended up winning 3-0 as I'd gotten First Blood, Slay the Warlord, and Linebreaker (the Deffkopta with 1 Wound swooped into his deployment zone at the last minute).
Great videos guys. Got me interested in 40K again! (My wallet thanks you!). Going forward with your channel I'd love to see some campaigns started with story based missions. Creating your own characters and units (Just history and name etc..), planets and background within the 40k universe. I think people could really get behind and follow certain characters (Striking Scorpion Exarch for instance!). Getting them invested in the armies and characters and having permanent death to these characters and units would just up the drama, cinematic view and ante even more than usual! Anyway just my ideas! Keep up the good work lads, looking forward to the next clash.
Not sure what you meant when the Jetbikes assaulted the passengers that had spilled out of the wrecked Chimera and you said "you're allowed to do that now in 6th edition"? Did you mean that they could assault a unit provided they had been in a transport which was the unit the Jetbikes shot at during the shooing phase? This was also the case in 5th edition, you could assault the embarked passengers of a transport you popped open.
I think it's as simple as the assault phase comes after the shooting phase, therefore if units are there at the beginning of the assault phase they are able to be assaulted - in the other scenario had the tank not been popped - he could have assaulted the tank so I think he's done it right (might be wrong)
Conrad Bate I think you can t assault the imperial guards in this case, because you shooted to another unit, the tranport in this case. And you must assault to what you shoot. Imperial guards and tranport aren t the same unit in this case.
I already explained: you absolutely can assault the unit that comes out of a transport if you destroy it. I just wondered why Scorp would think this wasn't the case in the previous edition of the rules. None of the 'I think' stuff, I know.
Tim Kaye more conjecture (it's sad to say I am enjoying this)I think it might be that the autarch shot and was able to assault.. there is also a new 6th edition thing about having 2 attacks in melee with a pistol and the old rule not having to hold onto the bike with one hand anymore - or as I say - it might be a laser lance rule change (did they change)
Just as always great bat rep :-) nice army lists beautifull board excellent game :-) i would gladly pay you guys to watch such reps on a weakly basis :-)
Great Batrep - few thoughts re the Eldar Why Bright Lances on the Serpents? Surely the twin linked Scatter is better even though you were facing a lot of tanks - the S7 from the shields is a better bet to glance stuff to death with rerolls against AV11/12. Also, were you taking your cover saves from the Pens being converted into glances from the Serpent Shield? You didn't seem to be.
If I was playing the IG army, I would've given all of my units Krak grenades and charged those wraith units with the Emperor's fury. Come on men, nobody lives forever, charge!!!
Painting is great but you should playe more competetive Eldar. More Scater Lasser Serpents. More Farseer. If you want fun units think about hawks with exarch and sun rifle. Night Spinner/Fire Prism are also fun and strong.
before every battle report with james in i always end up rooting for him... no offence SS lol dont think i've seen him win one yet you hang in there jim!
Jeez, as you would say! Those were some crappy dice rolls man! Was just gonna say about the relentless thing for the weapon platforms. Also, did the guard in the Chimera do overwatch out of the fire points? It wasn't mentioned.
He might not have been able to. You are not allowed to charge a model that you cannot possibly harm. That being said, I am not sure what wargear, if any, that his characters had that may allow him to harm them.
I just imagine Pask watching that wraithknight fall, and just before the wriathlord killed him, saying, "We did it. By the Emperor, we did it."
yeah i agree exactly what he would've said
lol:) I can imagine that:)
I've been playing eldar since the 3rd edition, so I'm a huge fan of them.

Like those trees, gives the board a very cinematic look
Very good report! One question though, what size is the board? It looks a little long for a 6*4 board.
It always puts a smile on my face whenever I see that you have uploaded a new video. Keep up the great work!
That Wraith Knight assault roll though...
The Eldar Heavy Weapon platforms give Relentless so they can move and fire at full BS no need for snapshots.
ok got it:) thanks!
beautiful sequence you made before the murder turn great camera move and sound, really theatrical.

I love the way the IG player bursts out laughing after the Wraithknight's miserable lolfail.

So are guard, at least the infantry is and the light vehicles, and you don't see them hiding behind a giant power ranger
true, but they do have the strongest vehicles in the game i think (Tau are nice but not as heavily armed) my mate always beats me with guard, i have no idea how to fight them

pleasure to watch and listen to, nice work!

GO ELDAR GO!!!
But were you find some awesome words like at 00:34???
Will you ever build fantasy armies? I'd love to see you guys build up Lizardmen, or the new chaos demons.
If you a good use out of the Eca get one farseer or put them all with warlocks in each sqaud make them much more useful
Even when blown to smithereens I think those Imperial Guard vehicles look great. Any plans do to one of your painting tutorials on that Guard color scheme?

glad you are enjoying the videos!:) yes...James is working on his Ultramarines at the moment...:)
That eldar army looks amazing!
I've started to take up my eldar army again after a year or so finishing and improving my space marine army but I need a new colour scheme for the eldar. I'm thinking black with white and red gems. Any ideas?
Watched and liked
Thanks for the entertaining batrep :-)
Eldar turn 4...... BOOOOOOOOM!!!
Yep. You didn't need to roll to hit. It was an automatic penetrating hit on the first tank just for reaching it.
The gun platforms make a heavy weapon a assault weapon, right? So shouldn't have used snapfire for those bright lances
Subbed a while ago, best batreps on youtube! any chance for some Space Wolves or Orks in the future? Keep up the good work!
Don't the weapon platforms have relentless or something like that?
What's the name of the blue on of the eldar?
Hi!
Awesome batt rep! I want to see more!
I have a question tho, how do you make your models so darn shiny? Varnish?
thanks for the comments...I use GW Purity Seal...it comes out a nice satin colour shine!:)
vendetta and snipers would've been good to hunt down that wraithknight, did the troops inside the chimera fire overwatch before the wraith knight blew it up?
twinlinked, means rerol to hit right? so first wave serpent shots should have been rerolled
Re-roll failed to-hit rolls. I think :/
As always just started video. Love it keep it up. Moar vids plzz
that turn four though. very powerful eldar army, the guard had not much chance of killing all four of those monstrous creatures and three wave serpents.
Thanx for another great Batrep! Big Fan from Puerto Rico!
thanks!:)
Keep up the good work and happy gaming. :)
thanks for the comments!:) Sure...my camera details are in the video description. Yes...I've had that audio problem too before!:S I'm using windows movie maker too...
***** Just out of interest Luke, how did you resolve that audio issue, thx :)
Is there a current ETA for the Imperial Guard codex?
According to 40k Radio, we're looking at an April release. And apparently the codex is being renamed, and will instead be "Codex: Astra Militarum." Yes, it sounds like crap, but 40k Radio has a pretty solid track record when it comes to rumors.
Ah alright, thanks for the response.
Great vid =) loving them all
You should replace your Valerye with a Vendetta.
He mentions that around 1:56.
thanks for the tips!:) Sure...the Wraithknight did have a Scatter Laser..its a handy upgrade!:)
So many vehicles on such a small battlefield...overkill?
magnific paintings !!
That's the thing with objective games. You can have one model left, but as long as he's on an objective you can still win!
Keep up the good work lads, looking forward to the next clash.
yeah...good ideas!:)
Great video battle report always.
None of the 'I think' stuff, I know.
oh, well who knows, surely off the cuff I guess.. or is he talking about the autarch with laser lance maybe?
Tim Kaye more conjecture (it's sad to say I am enjoying this)I think it might be that the autarch shot and was able to assault.. there is also a new 6th edition thing about having 2 attacks in melee with a pistol and the old rule not having to hold onto the bike with one hand anymore - or as I say - it might be a laser lance rule change (did they change)
Just as always great bat rep :-) nice army lists beautifull board excellent game :-) i would gladly pay you guys to watch such reps on a weakly basis :-)
Great game, awesome video.
Great Batrep - few thoughts re the Eldar
Why Bright Lances on the Serpents? Surely the twin linked Scatter is better even though you were facing a lot of tanks - the S7 from the shields is a better bet to glance stuff to death with rerolls against AV11/12.
Also, were you taking your cover saves from the Pens being converted into glances from the Serpent Shield? You didn't seem to be.
yeah usually I go for scatter lasers...love them:) yeah...pretty sure I was taking the cover saves also! thanks for the comments!:)
The Guardian Defender platforms count as assault weapons, so you shouldnt've fired them as snap shots :)
gorgeous eldar army!
I really like that new list. Try a few more games before you shelf it : ) I bet it would fare a lot better against a space marine force.
oh yeah...ECA will be back!:)
Where is this filmed?
Table Top Nation, Hockley, Essex, UK:)
Good show for the citizens!
i think instead of double bright ance double scatter laser with shield may have been better to help take out all those ig soldier
Given that they were all pretty much taken out anyway, I'd say they did alright. :P
true
before every battle report with james in i always end up rooting for him... no offence SS lol dont think i've seen him win one yet
you hang in there jim!
yes..seems he has a lot of people on this channel who feel the same way! lol. well...he has won a few...and very convincingly!:D
You haven't fielded the Tau for a while.. Be good to see another report with them...
Guard need more monstrous creature killers
Hard to kill that many High toughness monsters AND vehicles. WraithKnights are so broken.
Whats the cheapest army to make?
Probably Grey Knights due to low model counts.
why is there humans in the eldar guardiansqds?
***** Thanks for your videos. They are well done and I appreciate your consistent good sportsmanship! :)
awww yiss christmas goodies from *****
Keep up the good work sirs, terrain and armies are amazing.
I serve the imperial guard as commissioner of the 8th Hell Fire
You easily make the best batreps
Time to get some new dice mate.
Jeez, as you would say! Those were some crappy dice rolls man! Was just gonna say about the relentless thing for the weapon platforms. Also, did the guard in the Chimera do overwatch out of the fire points? It wasn't mentioned.
why didn't you just assault the wraith knight with a combined squad and commisar to make him stuck in combat for the rest of the game?
He might not have been able to. You are not allowed to charge a model that you cannot possibly harm. That being said, I am not sure what wargear, if any, that his characters had that may allow him to harm them.
Is there no more space hulk
coming soon!:)
