If it crashes too often then, try New Vegas Tick Fix, FNV Mod Limit Fix and New Vegas Heap Replacer mod. If you have a reason not to use some of this mod then just use one of them that I do recommended, New Vegas Heap Replacer mod only, install it then try that sgtm 50 trick again see if it crash or not. Or go vulkan, with vulkan route you might have to do some 'homework' to set it up but could work for ya, either from increase performance or stability who knows.
There should have been the option in the official game to upgrade Easy Pete into Difficult Pete, and recruit him as a companion. Giving him a unique variant of FEV and large quantities of Buffout should be sufficient
