As a permanently disabled person, I love this build! I will say that the coffee table would have to be moved every time the wheelchair user has to get in or out. Someone did make a wheelchair mod, but they used the bicycle animation, so it's very glitchy and the sim doesn't stay sitting down.

Pretty sure its not specific to disabled/mental health issues though. Everybody has a spoon drawer....its just some people are lucky enough never to run out of spoons and others dont have many at all! 😉 Id love to see more representation in game so this was a really cool build.

We are a spoon household. My husband is autistic. I have a neurological disease. Things like overhead lights and ticking clocks being a no is really familiar! Nice to see it being discussed so openly. A lot of people I am around seem to think you can just ignore your challenges and do what they do.

i'm a disabled person who uses a wheelchair & cane and I LOVED THIS. often when watching build videos, I come up with little story ideas for sims I might want to move in. For this one, I thought of myself---this is "my" house. It has so many of the same features!! It's very rare that I feel seen in sims content, thank you so much ^^

As someone with mental and physical disabilities, a lot of features in this house really stood out to me. I have joint hypermobility so having a ramp would be a massive help for me on my bad days when I'm having to use crutches. Or having noise cancelling headphones to bring my sensory overload down. You are AMAZING!
Edit: The pool! You were spot on with the aquatherapy aspect of it

This is such a cool idea! I think a house for a blind sim would also work! Giving priority to textures and shapes instead of colors for the furniture, or fun colorful lights for those blind sims who can see the shape of lights. A lot of focus on instruments or manual hobbies instead of painting for example And a space for the sim's guide dog! :D I would love to see that

As a chronically ill person, I turned this a video of yours on tonight like I always do every night before bed. You talking about the spoon theory, and the way you went about it made me so happy. I’ve NEVER heard it spoken about unless it was with doctors or other spoonies. It made me realize how little I see myself represented, or how little I see people spreading awareness of the daily struggles disabled and chronically ill people go through. This made me heart so happy ♡ Thank you, from the bottom of my heart

Ticking clocks drive me absolutely insane! I love that you did this and added the pool and hot tub for people with chronic pain. My dental hygienist (who coincidentally has the same hip surgeon as me) was telling me about her hot tub/swim spa with a treadmill in it to help her exercise without the full impact on her joints.
If I were to change anything about this it would be to have both a bath tub and walk in shower in the bathroom. Not having to step over a tub is helpful after surgeries. The shower chair is a nice little touch. I have one as well. :)

i don't comment under videos often, but i just wanted to say thank you for always advocating for underrepresented communities! although i love a lot of other sims 4 builders too, lots of other creators' builds tend to be heteronormative and just not always the most inclusive. this build is amazing and although i don't have a disability, i seriously appreciate it as someone who's best friend has an invisible disability as well as a relative with a physical disability. again, thank you so much!!

It's just so awesome to know there's a warm, welcoming, inclusive community, and thank you for being a part of creating it and holding space for these kinds of builds and conversations. I'd love to see an ADHD-friendly build! Lots of storage/organization boxes, garbage cans in every room, clocks/timers, stations with everything in arm's reach (eg the mugs and tea containers are right next to the teapot), lots of sensory input like textures/smells/sounds, etc.

Thanks for this! I have had Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia since I was a teen, and now I have long Covid. Plus hyper mobility and other dysautonomia disorders. There are so many things that people overlook in disability access. When we moved into our house the first home project we did was replacing ALL the round door knobs with lever style knobs, I sometimes have joint pain and muscle weakness in my fingers and wrists and lever knobs are far more accessible. Not to mention easier to use if I’m on crutches from spraining my ankles. Plus not having things stored up high, it can be painful to reach up, plus dangerous to balance if you need a stool. My dream is to have a ramp - all my surviving grandparents and grandparents-in-law use walkers and sometimes holidays are hard for them to access family homes. But I watched an episode of love it or list it that had a wheelchair user home owner and he was adamant that even though he wanted a ramp, that he did not want it visible from the street because of the statistics on homes with ramps being targeted for break-ins more - and I looked it up and he was right. That’s super depressing but definitely something to keep in mind, maybe shield the ramp with landscaping or platforms to make it less obvious? This is a really nice home.

The community on Twitch during this build was amazing! Your community is always great, but that session was so supportive and knowledgeable, sharing and caring. I love this build. Thank you for the shout-out to a person who often does this kind of build; I've followed since I sometimes really want my life simulation game to mimic some aspects of my actual life. I'll download it once I'm back online. Thank you so much for this.
As for mods, most wheelchairs are seats for poses. Necrodog has a mod to reskin the bicycle as a wheelchair. I have a collection of artificial limbs cc since I'll never be able to recreate the limb deficiencies of my kid (they often draw themselves with artificial limbs when it's needed for certain poses, so I'm comfortable with it). There's a Tumblr post that has a massive list of cc for all sorts of disability representation.

Also, having the smart device (aka Alexa) was a good choice! Our house has one in the main open living area and the bedroom to handle lights and thermostat controls when I'm bed bound, plus I can send alerts to my husband through it that will blow up his phone in emergencies.

this is beautiful! i've had chronic pain for over a decade and now its gotten to the point of being pretty much bedridden and having to use a cane, so now that my situation has changed it made me really realize how unequipped the world is, that before id never bat an eye to a set of stairs or a broken elevator, like yeah i've always noticed how bad accesibility is for a disabled person, but now I AM that person and that breaks my heart! Seeing this kind of unexpected representation makes me have hope for more and more people to help with the visibility of us disabled, and the little details that the sims have added in the past has helped too. Although it's not much really, and i would love to see some sims with reduced mobility, like the use of a cane, a wheelchair, scooters, walkers, anything, I'm not so sure how could that be implemented, with sooo many worlds with like hundreds of lots i can't see them renovating every expansion, world, and every lot to acomodate for disabilities, like if i'm honest sounds like pretty impossible sadly... maybe for sims 5 in the future? if they take it into account since the beginning i do feel like it could work!

I have so many thoughts. I’m severely physically disabled and just yesterday wished I could play a wheelchair using sim. I use a powerchair and can’t change positions on my own. But for the sake of making the Sims more accessible and inclusive I think they could take it in steps. Kinda like this: 1 invisible disabilities and walking difficulties. They already have elders - a lot of the elder functions could easily be adapted to make younger sims disabled. They could have a disability toggle or characteristic that activates changes is the needs of the sim. E.g. having their energy decline a little faster, adding a (expensive) pill to get some energy back. They could also borrow the elder function of over exertion (consequences debatable). This could also be used to create sensory sensitivities; Eg. have a sim be sensitive to noise (by getting uncomfortable) and disliking some foods, For walking difficulties they could create a new walking style. Maybe add a cane. Bonus points if they add other walking aids. (Also applicable for elders).
    2. Create ambulatory wheelchair users. They would basically just have to create animations for pushing a wheelchair. If they’re really lazy it could even be a power chair. They’d just need to tweak the animations for sitting and standing up. This sim would be able to stand and walk a few steps/short distances. Any animations that a sim stands for are able to be kept. Transferring could be stand up normally, step, sit down in wheelchair. Bonus points if they added ramps, shower chairs (slotable in every shower) and direct transfers from wheelchair to chair/bed/couch.
    3. The extra mile for physical disabilities: make everything doable from a wheelchair: cooking, eating, writing, biking (hand bike), laundry, hand washing, infant to kid care. Dancing, playing instruments, drawing etc.
    4. Personal wishes: I’d personally love it if they’d also add powerchairs and created care-dependencies. Not every disabled person can do things independently. I’d like to see a system where you can choose to play a care dependent sim and a caretaker. Kind of like infants and toddlers, the care dependent sim would need a second sim to help them shower, use the toilet or change their diaper, help them get in and out of bed and prepare food for them. This would best represent my own life. If they’d include ventilators as a funky wearable I’d be down for that too! (Also oxygen tanks).
I’d honestly be over the moon if the sims team made it to point 2 on my list. With sensory sensitivities, walking difficulties and ambulatory wheelchair users added, I believe a lot more people would feel included and represented in the game.

I'm glad to see new content like this. Wheelchair ramps would be a nice addition to the gameplay, especially if they have the possibility of being installed internally, from one floor to another.

i like to use the idea of spell slots for the nerdy types who don't really "get" the idea of proverbial spoons, and are familiar w/ tabletop games! some tasks are a 4th level task; you can "upcast" a task to a higher level slot, but can't "downcast," so once you're out of 4th level slots, there goes your energy for the 4th level tasks

This is a lovely build. What a delightful combination of form and function. It has always truly irritated me that so many EA community lot builds thoughtlessly throw the restrooms on the second floor. Have they never heard of the ADA? WTH?!? The first thing I always do is add restrooms to the first floor of any multi-story build. I have also started adding ramps to community lots if they are on foundations. Now I just need to learn the "two elevators on one lot" hack, and I'm good to go! The high school I'm currently building needs the elevators. Thanks for this awesome, inclusive build!

@@challah_back_femme9857yes yes yes, I felt the same. Disability for many people that live with it is just neutral. It's not good or bad it's just how it is. Thinking that it's negative gives life to a lot of ableist stuff. Thinking disability and disabled people are a negative thing that should be hidden from view. That's a dangerous way to think, but also the reason inaccessiblity is so rife.

I felt like my teen and I would love living in this house! They use a wheelchair and I have an invisible disability, and I felt like both of us were really well represented here 😁 the only difference in the home I'm planning to build for us is that we will need two bedrooms, my compromise is to have combined common spaces and an open floor plan so they can easily get around the furniture but we can still fit everything we need ❤

I was not expecting to love and learn so much from this one video! As an ADHDer with a lot of sound sensitivities I feel you on certain sounds... don't get me started on high pitched sounds of any kind!. I've always kind of wondered what the perfect ADHD home would look like in the sims..i might try it now. Also thanks for spoon theory!

This video actually made my chest hurt with how good it made me feel! I wanted to cry (in a good way)..
Something big for me to be added to the game would be good representation of autism in gameplay because I myself am autistic and so are two of my siblings. My brother is also selectively mute and definitely “low functioning”.
I don’t know what it’d look like because autism is different for everyone..
Also! Sims that are actually deaf and Sims that are blind too would be amazing! I also feel like crutches would be easier to add into the game before wheelchairs, but both would also be amazing! Additionally, stuff like casts for broken arms would be cool as it would be nice to represent that due to how much breaking her arm affected my sister to this day..
All in all, at the very least, decorations that hint at any type of disability would make my day.

100% under represented, I have an invisible disability actually I have multiple. I love that they are bringing SOME stuff into the game, but there needs to be more. It'd be revolutionary to add representations to more disabilities in a LIFE sim! I love this build, excellent job representing those who have disabilities. ALSO - someone who has an Alexa and is neurodivergent it's the best thing to have! Again, this build is great.

Be still my wheelchair using disabled heart!! Thank you so much for making this! We love to see the representation!! I was glad to see the medical wearables, but I really wish the Sims team would make some disabled game play. People of different ethnicity and cultures are represented, there's LGBTQ representation, and now increasing representation for trans, non-binary, genderqueer people etc. But we are still left out. I just don't think it is very fair. Some would say it's because disability is "negative", but that is an ableist perspective. Disability is just another identity like any other. I know there have been modders over the years who have made things, like there were wheelchairs for TS2 and 3, but they just functioned like chairs or bikes. I have also seen some health mods that have things like ADHD and other ND conditions in them. But I would really like to see something official. They could make it an expansion pack if they really thought it was too touchy and then those that don't want it in their game could just not buy the pack. Sorry for the long comment, I just have a lot of feelings lol. I loved the makeshift support bars, the open space at the dining table, and the stuff sitting out (it's not clutter. It's access). I might be the one autistic person on planet earth who loves The Big Light and well lit/bright environments. If you search tickless clock on Amazon they have em there. Absolute game changer!

i recently learned about fork theory, similar to spoon theory, which assigns difficulties to forks. Sure you can handle having one or two small forks stuck in you (a difficult phone call, a big set of stairs), but a lot of tiny forks can add up to a big pitchfork! And that's really difficult!

I have been posting on game changers videos for years about wanting wheelchairs. I know game changers are not EA, but you cannot deny that you guys at the very least appear to have a lot of influence on EA, the sims franchise, and the custom content being made and shared within the sims community. So it means a lot to see you making this build and I really hope it inspires other big Simmers to do the same. Wheelchairs are something that just cannot be implemented into the game via mods at this time. I greatly appreciate the wheelchair mod however it is...very buggy. If it even still works at all after so many updates to the game.
I understand that the loudest voices in the community want(ed) infants and horses and cars and whatever else...but it's so frustrating having to watch people be so happy to get the things they want when wheelchair users aren't even getting the most basic things needed to represent themselves in the game. A massive percent of the world is disabled, give us wheelchairs in the sims 4.

I don't know if you've heard of L'Arche, but they create communities that support people with or without intellectual or developmental disabilities, and help them to work together to create a more equal society. I think it would be really cool to see a home that is created with that dynamic in mind.

I have never heard of the spoon theory. However, when I would tell my peers I couldn’t do anymore because I was tired and in so much pain. It wasn’t even funny they would brush it off and say I was lazy that’s why I don’t have but maybe one or two close friends, because I want to distance myself from the able-bodied, because they do not understand or do not want to understand I’m recovering from major surgery at the moment I am seven months in, but I was told I wouldn’t feel my normal self until 18-24 months after so the spoon theory is actually kind of interesting to learn about and would help me help others understand my situation if that made sense😅

Hi Tanya (Tanja? Other?) I am amazed by your builds. I love the stories and results of all of them. I happen to be legally blind. My vision fluctuates violently between different environments. Especially lighting. On gently overcast days I can usually see my best. But having a room lit with or vs natural light is a real pain in the butt. My peripheral vision sucks balls, and I walk way too fast for my own damn good. Add to that a lack of balance and I'm always screwed LOL. My dog has learned that it's a very bad idea to sit in the middle of the floor or under my feet because I will either just not see him or will be moving so fast I don't look for him. I can see. I am not blind. I have a cane, but it's such a pain in the ass that I never use it. It actually causes me more issues to try and glide it over the ground than it does to just walk carefully on a day when my eyes are bad. Luckily my husband worked with people with visual impairments long before we met, and he's happy to be my seeing-eye dog when I need it.
That being said, I am somebody who knows I may be totally blind someday. And I am highly attracted to high-contrast and Loud patterns. Particularly Psychedelic animal prints. That's more my style. In The Sims 4 I find myself often using many many gray and blue scale build with pops of color. Particularly red. I didn't know this for many years, but I have a niece who was born very prematurely, and her parents decorated her room in grayscale with pops of red, because her eyes were not fully developed yet and this was to train her eye to notice things. They were the easiest colors for her to see it that time. Which is why I think I've been building that way so much. I see grayscale with pops of color more easily.
I know I have been rambling. But I hope I made sense. And I was wondering if you could make a build that is decorated in a similar way. Extremely little clutter on counters and table tops and Floors - this would mean no cutting boards because someone could not get into them and knock them over constantly. Cuz organization is extremely important to somebody who can't see and is also an inpatient klutz. Just a passing idea. But great job on these bills

I’m able to use stairs, but because of my own health issues, they’re difficult for me, so when ramps or elevators are an option I go for that instead. Maybe they could even implement a system like the feeding preferences for infants, like “prefers stairs” “prefers ramps” “no preference”

I've been wanting to make an accessible build for a while now, but I never knew how to go about it, with how much there is to consider and so many types of diabilities. This is super cool. I'm not autistic myself, (even though I believe I might be but I've never been diagnosed. How does one do that or test for themselves, not as self diagnosis, but an I'm not crazy tool?) but I also use headphones everywhere and bright lights give me horrid headaches that don't go away. Ticking clocks also drive me insane!

I have epilepsy which is mostly an invisible illness for me, and I wouldn’t expect the The Sims to add sims having actual seizures in game. But a few things I would like to see are medical alert bracelets, and maybe posters or artwork that represents different disabilities and the colors associated with them. Epilepsy is a purple ribbon, for example.

Finally I understand what my boyfriend means when he says low spoons.. I knew it meant low energy, but I had no clue it was an actual thing and not an improvised explanation like I might give-
I'm not very informed about autism, though I do show signs of it as well as ADHD (or AuDHD), but I'm glad that I haven't meant a complete ass in my understanding of it.
It's hard to explain my thought process, but it was nice to write down my rambles, thanks! ^^
