That's a pretty bold statement. Lolz. I've heard quite a few guitarists compare julian to allan holdsworth, which I dont get at all. I mean, even holdsworth's early stuff like velvet of darkness where he plays solo guitar on a few cuts, I don't hear the similarities. Maybe my ear isn't trained enough perhaps.
@@Kanendd I took this comparison as a comparison of ability. The argument for Holdsworth, I suppose, was that he was his career was dedicated to forging new ground. Then again I find Holdsworth a difficult(yet rewarding) listen, whereas I could listen and learn from Julian ALL DAY!
The catch is that he isn't 'of' this generation, so he won't achieve the recognition he deserves. Still - transcribing Lage is a college degree in nuanced guitar playing.
Stellar playing and interpretation. I love the way in which all Julian's covers are at once respectful to the material in original form and highly personal.
You transcend musical norms, not for effect, but because it serves your musical needs. Because of this you are a single voice in a world full of extant musical formulae and predictability. Bravo!
As said earlier in the comments Julian Lage is THE jazz guitar improviser of our time. Also, moving towards solidbody guitars was a clever choice defining his sound. The particular guitar seems to take JL's artistry up a notch.
i was wondering about the guitar. i figured it was ungodly expensive. here's a saying i just made up: a guitar only looks as good as its pickup covers.
6 grand for what looks like a Gretsch copy?? I just checked Reverb and there's an original 1955 Duo Jet on there that's actually cheaper! This kind of price is ridiculous...
3:42 - When I grow up, I want to be in that band that's inside Julian's head
Great comment! Definitely a little orchestra running around in there...
Best comment ever. Totally right!
The bend he does at 1:19ish is awesome. That guitar has so much resonance and volume that he pulled of 3 or 4 bends off one pluck. Amazing
I laughed out loud when he did that. It was like seeing a magician pull an elephant out of his tear duct.
He didn’t invent that. That’s not too common of a thing but it’s been done by John McLaughlin before a few times. I’ve heard John Mayer do that too
I'd start it at 1:03 just to put it in extended, glorious context. But yes I goggled at that, myself.
The best guitarist of our generation! Hands down!
Any genre!! Anything... this man has the God given talent!
True

There's such joy in his playing
That guitar sounds like it’s happy being played like that. Amazing.
Stellar playing and interpretation. I love the way in which all Julian's covers are at once respectful to the material in original form and highly personal.
insightful comment
The first standard I learned and played in public. I will never forget the thrill of playing this tune for the first time.
That thing at 1:19... pure magic. That is the sound that magic makes when it happens.

There's so much nuance to what you wrote. Spot on.
Love his playing!!
We all do
I hope the new guitar means theres a steady stream of tunes headed our way!
So wonderful I listened to it 2 times in a row.
He loves to play the guitar. Thanks for sharing that love Julian.

whats the price? I can't find it on the callings website
@@cantseehimliam7211 I can’t find it either, which usually isn’t a good sign. The acoustic one that JL made with Collings is around 5,000, so...
@@andrewkashian3987 $6,600. The Ron Ellis pick-ups alone cost around $1,000.
