What even is the deal with these archives? Why didn't they upload these videos in the first place? I understand some of them have camera or audio issues, but this here is just pure tiny desk quality.
@@Bonifratz I think this was before they started regularly uploading the concerts on youtube. I remember seeing this when I was really young on their website.
Josh, your comment is so important! Since the times of the trio shown above, Julian has gone from a young prodigy to one of the most brilliant, complete musicians alive.
Its so refressing to see a Jazz guitarist enjoying himself .. When I attempted Jazz school I actually was told not to move and emote and had points deducted at my Jury for "Over Performing" .. Julian is JOY!
For those wondering, the percussionist is called Tupac Mantilla. Some years ago I took a class with him in my music college in Bogotá, Colombia, and he was a very good teacher as well.
No way, I've been looking for this concert for years ever since Gary Burton's one where it's mentioned in the description that the Julian Lage trio had visited the Tiny Desk. And now i learn that the reason I couldn't find it was because it never made it to youtube?? lol nevermind it's here now
Extraordinary playing, Lage's style is really unique. Mantilla is also crazy expressive on the percussion, he reaches some Trilok Gurtu heights there. The chemistry between the trio of them and the relaxed atmosphere with total mastery executed apparently effortlessly makes this top shelf Tiny Desk material.
My god this is beautiful. I feel like Julian is one of the ambassadors of jazz for the new generation. His feel is a joy to experience and the enjoyment of making music he emanates really cuts through that "capital J Jazz" that so many young musicians are intimidated by (myself included). Such an inspiration. And MY GOD the percussionist is astounding. I really need to explore his works as well. So glad to have found this.
Julian definitely studied with Jim Hall and Pat studied with Jim too. So perhaps they sound alike partly because they had the same teacher? Julian's sound has changed a lot over the past 10+ years though.
Pro photographer speaking. For those of us who would have enjoyed seeing more of his work on the fretboard, you should’ve considered both light source and camera angles before the session.
I'm soaked with beautiful performances. What a beautiful performance. I am a nameless busker who I do not know yet, but I will try to become a musician who people love someday. I support your music life and wish you good health and happiness.
Drumming, both loose and exotically rhythmic. I hear flavors of retro jazz and exotic samba. Lage's guitar speaks loud and clear and on occasions starts sermoning, dipped into musical sauce of melodies and super harmonies. Bass is accurately complimentary and adds personality to a surprisingly calm and passingly violent musical repertoire. Overall, a tubful of energy, passion and skill.

@@alangonzalezmartinez8189 Saludos, Alan! Ya it's been on the website for years I've watched it there about a million times
You guys need to bring Julian again. His latest work is pure gem
I love Julian’s playing but wow gotta take a second to appreciate this percussionist!
I had the same thought
And his name is Tupac Mantilla, it cant get better than this
Agreed! This whole band is fantastic!
He's a Colombia percusionista called Tupac
Yep
Please bring him back for a second time when you get the opportunity!
^ This!!
Yes would love to see his modern material in this setting (so I can share it to all my friends)
There’s a tiny desk concert with him and Gary burton in duo that’s amazing

It's boring.
I just love how they have total control of their dynamics. The level of contrast that they achieve is incredible.

This was 12 years ago, and still one of the best Tiny Desk events ever... thanks Tom Boilen, and thanks Julian Lage.
Everyone playing seems to be in a state of pure joy. An absolute pleasure to watch this.
I will never not love the faces guitarist make. 😂😍❤️
Those faces! They truly love this.
I saw Julian playing solo once in Groningen, NL, at a festival. Absolutely mesmerizing

This is too perfect! They play like one instrument... and Julian with that Manzer sounds terrific!
So you're telling me I've spent months thinking I found a gem before Tiny Desk only to find out he did one nearly a decade prior.
Better late than never! Man...his playing is so deep. Amazing trio.
love the fact that's only 720p, gives the old school feelings
Julian Is MY FAVORITE Modern JAZZ GUITARIST
What a great trio! I particularly love Tupac Mantilla on percussion.
That one phone ringing at 5:46 was perfect :’)
All those smiles only musicians understand, love it.
This really was the early day of npr , I recognise that corner , nice to see the early incarnation of Julian Lage , he deserves another spot
One of the most memorable minutes of music I’ve ever hear, feel blessed. Thank you NPR
Now this is dynamics at it's finest!
Thank you for releasing this gem.
The audio production is amazing now, but there is something so special about these one mic shows.
Makes me happy to watch julian play, this cheered me up right now hahha love the man
What a command, range, dynamics and tone
Is this his best guitar sound? Absolutely beautiful.
Love Julian Lage, just love him! He is so special and unique, totally inspiring.
speechless.. all three of them are magnificent
Beautiful performance, they do look like having so much fun!
Did not expect that fire when I started this
I wasn’t feeling like listening to music for sometime but this was such a fresh start. Such inspiring musicians. Phenomenal control.
Thank you so much for uploading this!! it's such a treasure archive! please bring him back for another concert :)
Good for him. He is much much better now, and that’s incredible.
Bring Julian back!!!

Geees! What a stellar performance. Three incredibly talented musicians! Love the “brushes “!!👍✌️😊🙏🏼🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶🎶🎵🎶🎵🎵🎶
Amazing sound and harmony all over!!
can´t wipe the smile off my face watching this
He has such a lovely tone and blissful melodies. Reminds me of Pat Metheny.
He studied with Pat right?
