    I was actually developing similar app for my GH3, and even have a working prototype. The things I've discovered along the way: the limitations you see in apps are mostly camera limitations, not app limitations as such.
    Cameras do stream low res (and perhaps inconsistent FPS) my guess is that for the reason that they need most of their CPU power to perform the actual task, and the whole wireless functionality is secondary for that matter.
    My biggest disappointment was to find out that GH3 cuts the stream completely once it starts active photo/video recording. And when with photo this is not as critical (you don't get live stream 1 sec after shutter release) - in video mode it rendered the whole app useless, which basically was the reason I never released it.
    And yeah, I know GH3 is an old camera already, but the points are still valid.

    Amazing video! I have a question, I hope you can help. Every time I use my Panasonic G7 with the Panasonic Image app, hit the record button and the display of the camera turns off after 30 seconds automatically so I cannot see myself when I shoot the video. I could not find the settings to fix that. Thanks! BTW, I just bought your G7 guide after using this camera for more than a year lol.

    For Sony:
    "These cameras must have the free Smart Remote Control installed from the PlayMemories Camera Apps Store to be controllable by FieldMonitor. With only Smart Remote Embedded available in the camera’s Application List, you can monitor the camera but not control it.
    Sonys do not allow the use of Picture Profiles in Wi-Fi remote mode. You cannot shoot in S-Log2 or S-Log3 while using Wi-Fi at the same time."

      Biggest Sony limitation: no Picture Profiles, so no log recording. That's a Sony limitation, sorry; nothing I can do to remedy that. Also, Sony focus setting over Wi-Fi is VERY limited compared to what Panasonic allows.
      Load up Sony's PlayMemories Mobile and see what it allows while shooting; FieldMonitor can't do anything more control-wise than PlayMemories can. If PlayMemories offers you enough control, then FieldMonitor will, too.
      (Note also that FieldMonitor is a recording-only app: it doesn't have ANY playback capabilities. Switch to PlayMemories Mobile for replay and review.)

      Alas, no. You can set up a Picture Profile with SLog when you're NOT in remote mode. But as soon as you start up Smart Remote Control, you'll find that your Picture Profiles are ignored, and aren't even *in* the available menus. A Sony running in remote mode isn't the same Sony as when it's not in remote mode: it's a slightly *different* camera-with fewer options available-that just happens to be running on the same physical hardware.

      Sony play memories app will also allow you to project the screen onto your phone or monitor. Just with all apps like this one, they do have a 1 or 2 second delay in transmitting the scene onto your phone or tablet since its connected over wifi. Thus why I always prefer to use wires instead of wifi for connections. If you're just taking photos, it's great but not so great when shooting movies

  • @badvideopl
    @badvideopl 4 года назад +1

    it is all great, but the app still displays 'camera busy' message if you touch any button or operate focus ring, which makes it pretty much useless when shooting handheld, manually focusing any 'by wire' lens or gimballin` with follow focus feature which is a must since we cannot actually rely on Panasonic`s AF.
    I was hoping that it will override that 'feature' of wireless communication with the camera, but Panasonic app does exactly the same.

    • @Origin8Video
      @Origin8Video 4 года назад

      The difference is that FieldMonitor displays "camera busy" as a single line of text, and it vanishes the instant the camera says it can allow remote control again. The warning does not block the image (unlike the warning in Image App) so that viewfinding, focusing, etc. can still continue while it is displayed. The "camera busy" warning is necessary because the camera CAN'T be controlled remotely when an on-camera control is adjusted, and some indication is necessary because certain on-camera operations can put the camera into busy mode with no obvious way to clear it (see "If you're using a Panasonic with an electronically-coupled lens in manual focus mode" at www.adamwilt.com/fieldmonitor/support.html).

    the most important aspect is missing: how does it perform when moving the object/camera? can a director use it for wireless monitoring to get some impression what i am shooting when i am operating on a gimbal, or will there be too much delay? than its only purpose is making photos. For a Film maker, this question is essential and it is more important than the size of the provided image

    • @Origin8Video
      @Origin8Video 7 лет назад

      Delay is about 4 frames for Panasonics, 5-6 frames for Sonys (for comparison, the monitor LCDs on those cameras have 2 frames of delay). I often work 20 or 30 feet away from the camera without any problems or any increased latency... but it's Wi-Fi, so it'll depend entirely on how crowded the local Wi-Fi environment is. Too many access points, too much traffic, or a microwave oven operating nearby can disrupt things to a greater or lesser degree. To answer your question for your operating conditions, use the vendor's free Wi-Fi app and test for yourself: FieldMonitor's latency / delay / connectivity will be very much the same as Image App (Panasonic) or PlayMemories Mobile (Sony).

    • @danieldougan269
      @danieldougan269 4 года назад +2

      Now we just need more assist tools in the app. Zebras should be mandatory. But how about some LUT support? Waveforms and vectorscopes? My G85 doesn't have those.
      Do we not have higher-resolution monitoring because it would be too difficult over WiFi? Even 720p would be great.

    • @derekschauer2045
      @derekschauer2045 4 года назад +2

      @@danieldougan269 I wonder if they prioritize speed over quality. Having almost zero lag to the phone has been really nice!
      But then again, the technology to transmit 1080p to the phone with almost no lag does exist.

    • @LonzosStudios

      The iPhone version sucks, it does allow full screen but it's very chunky when recording, it's like it's constantly buffering!

    • @Origin8Video
      @Origin8Video 4 года назад

      @@danieldougan269 Higher-res over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi can only be done in two ways that I know of: drop the frame rate (and increase latency) to accommodate the larger frames, or use a dedicated, low-latency H.264/H.265 transmitter like a Teradek instead of the JPEG streams sent by these cameras.
      Some Sonys offer the choice of a 1024x576 image instead of the 640x360 defaults used by both Sony and Panasonic. The live-view frame rate drops by about a third, and the latency increases by a frame or two. The "low res" feed is *much* more usable overall.
      Teradeks start at about $1500; they allow full 1080p @ 30fps with audio, but they add at least a couple more frames of delay atop whatever the HDMI latency of your camera is. And they're $1500+. Cheaper alternatives exist (Hollyland Mars) but latency is worse.
      Full-res, "zero latency" transmitters use a dedicated 5GHz channel and use no compression or a simple run-length coding to avoid the need to buffer a frame for compression. They require dedicated receivers and run around $550. (Teradek Ace and Bolt, Paralinx)
      It turns out that the camera vendors have picked a pretty good compromise, seeing as it's a feature you get "for free" in the camera. Smallish JPEGs are easy to create using the existing hardware; they're as low-latency as a compressed image allows, and the JPEG hardware doesn't demand a lot of power. The 640x360 images sent by default are a "sweet spot", balancing detail against frame rate / latency (FWIW Canons send 512x288, and some Panasonic allow 320x180 feeds. The Canon live-view feed is still pretty usable, but the 320x180 feed is annoyingly coarse).

      Delay / latency is pretty much the same as Image App on the Panasonic or PlayMemories Mobile on the Sonys.
      At 24fps, FieldMonitor on the GH4 lags realtime by 4 frames. By comparison, the GH4’s own LCD lags by two frames and its HDMI feed is 5.5 or 6 frames behind realtime (as seen on a PIX-E5 and Odyssey7Q+).
      On the A6300, FieldMonitor is typically 5 or 6 frames behind realtime, while the A6300’s LCD lags by 2.5 frames, and HDMI is about 4 frames behind realtime.
      All latencies values are typical when connectivity is good, but even then there will be occasional hiccups, delayed frames, and the like. On the Sony, too, its delivery is more variable: sometimes I’ll see a frame that’s only one frame behind realtime, which means (for that one frame’s duration, at least) that FieldMonitor sees closer to realtime than the camera’s own LCD does!

      If the Metabones and camera are in the right mode, you should get the same focus control as with a native lens (which, in remote mode, isn't always that much!). With either the Sony 28-70 or the Canon 16-35 on a Metabones Cine (blue LED mode) on my A7ii, I can autofocus remotely in stills mode, but not in video mode. Older Metabones adapters (pre-V/Cine), though, I don't know about.

      Interesting! That doesn't happen on a GH4 or GH5. I'll make a note on the FieldMonitor site about that. BTW I think it would be the same with any Wi-Fi app, not just FieldMonitor. Thanks for the info!

      Origin8Video I had this problem with Panasonic App, not tested with Field Monitor app. There was a black screen everytime I connected with the app. Maybe they fixed it

    • @Origin8Video
      @Origin8Video 7 лет назад

      Update: with GH5 (but not the GH4), I get 5 seconds of black on the HDMI output, ten seconds after disconnection from FieldMonitor: when the camera would normally display "Not connected to the app" on its LCD. I haven't had any problems connecting, though I start Wi-Fi before recording. I think it's safe to say you should NOT disconnect from the camera while recording externally, if at all possible!

    fantastic app and the wifi doesn't drop out all the time like the irksome panasonic app (lots of wifi going on where i'm shooting)
    i turn on the airplane mode then proceed with the wifi setup
    use it with a GH4 and a GX85 for 2 camera shooting - my iphone for one camera and an ipad for the other . . . no problem !!
    really an outstanding app and worth the money 😀👍👍

    • @Origin8Video

      Generally speaking, the camera's LCD and/or EVF often won't be usable if you have both HDMI connected and a Wi-Fi remote (whether FieldMonitor, Image App, or PlayMemories Mobile) connected. With most Panasonics, connecting both an HDMI monitor and a Wi-Fi remote app blanks the on-camera display at all times. With Sonys (at least with the the A6300 and the A7Riii recording XAVC), the camera, HDMI ,and Wi-Fi will all show the picture initially, but as soon as you start recording, the image on the camera goes black: you still see the data readouts onscreen (shutter, ISO, etc.) but no image! Note that this doesn't happen for AVCHD, so it's dependent on the processing power required by in-camera recording: the LCD/EVF will be sacrificed in favor of recording, HDMI, and Wi-Fi, when necessary. So if you're planning to record in-camera, not just feed HDMI to an external monitor/recorder, just be aware that a Sony's EVF or LCD will look fine in standby, but may lose the picture as soon as you press record.

      Sully Cortez what's the lag like with a Sony? Is it a smooth image?

    • @Origin8Video
      @Origin8Video 7 лет назад +1

      Lag is roughly the same as the Sony app: 5-6 frames typically. Sadly that's as quickly as I can get the frames and display 'em; Sonys have a bit more delay in their Wi-Fi pipeline than Panasonics do.

    Downloaded to use with my A7II which it does work... as a monitor. Everything else was just trash. None of the controls worked other than start/stop recording. My biggest issue was that I'm unable to use Picture Profiles while using this app due to Sony being incapable for some reason of adding it to their remote app.

    • @Origin8Video
      @Origin8Video 6 лет назад

      Have you loaded Smart Remote Control on the camera? If you only have Smart Remote Embedded, all you get is start/stop and exposure compensation. (FWIW the A7ii is one of my development cameras; I know it works.) The lack of Picture Profiles is a camera-app limitation: neither of the Smart Remote camera apps allows it, sorry.

  • @Spleenzorio
    @Spleenzorio 6 лет назад +1

    I’m planning on getting the Sony A7 iii, this would be a perfect alternative for a flippy outie selfie screen since the camera doesn’t have one. How does the app effect the phone’s battery life?

    • @Origin8Video
      @Origin8Video 6 лет назад +1

      Just did a test with my year-old iPhone SE, timing a 10% battery rundown and extrapolating to how long the thing sould run:
      • FieldMonitor, WFM shown with medium refresh rate, 25% screen brightness: 5.5 hours.
      • Same, but at 100% screen brightness: 3.9 hours.
      • iPhone home screen, no apps running, 100% screen brightness: 7.5 hours.
      So, roughly speaking, running FieldMonitor is about twice as power-hungry as just displaying the home screen at full brightness. Your mileage may (and will) vary depending on signal quality, refresh rate, device type, and battery health.

    Sounds killer! I just wish I could see it in person first before shelling out $20. I know you say its the "same" as the cameras LCD however the site states the app's resolution as 640x360px but my GH4's rear LCD's resolution is 720 x 480px. So while it IS bigger in size, I wish I could see what the trade off is and what it looks like on yes a bigger screen, but with LESS resolution. I'd really love to use the app for the lightest monitor option when using my Ronin-M. Only drag is, I have to use the phone to calibrate/control the Ronin so that's probably not an option. Sure I can buy an ipad to use, but then I could just buy a regular monitor for the same price range...I guess the ipad would still be lighter tho.

    • @Origin8Video
      @Origin8Video 6 лет назад

      Apple doesn't allow free trials, sorry. The GH4's max Wi-Fi resolution in 16x9 is 640x360. You can get an idea of what it looks like by using either Image App or Cascable, both of which are free. Cascable has a full-width display that shows you exactly the same image size and resolution as FieldMonitor (and it's a darned good still-photo remote app, too). An iPad mini 2 or later might be a good size/weight tradeoff for gimbal use; refurbs start at $210, though you can get a low-end HDMI monitor cheaper.

    • @Origin8Video
      @Origin8Video 7 лет назад

      Yes. However, on a Panasonic, with both Wi-Fi and HDMI active, the camera's own LCD/EVF go dark: Panasonics can only feed two outputs at a time. Sonys (at least the A6300) don't suffer from that limitation.

    Hey Caleb, great video, thanks for showing this app! How is the connectivity when you're on the field, let's say in the middle of a downtown or in the country side?

    • @Origin8Video
      @Origin8Video 6 лет назад

      Connectivity depends entirely on the local Wi-Fi environment. If there's a lot of on-channel Wi-Fi traffic or interference, you'll have more problems, and may not be able to use *any* Wi-Fi remote app reliably. If you're in a clear, uncongested area, you'll have smooth connections and even be able to work with a much greater than normal separation between camera and iDevice. Unfortunately there's no good way to predict it; you just have to try it and see.

      Yes, but only on certain cameras: I can get full screen on my GH5, but not on my GH4 or LX100; the full-screen button simply doesn't appear. It's very odd, as I can't think of any reason why full-screen should be camera-specific.

      www.kickstarter.com/projects/220205692/lukilink is your best bet, if it ever ships. I've asked if they're open to third-party app integration, so you could watch higher-res, less-laggy video (4 frames instead of 5 or 6) over HDMI and still have control via Wi-Fi. No response yet.

    Just curious, is there any lateness/delay when recording video. This has been the only thing that has put me off using monitors . I bought a fieldview monitor 2 years ago and the delay was just too much

    • @Origin8Video
      @Origin8Video 4 года назад

      Delay varies from 2 to 6 frames depending on the camera; that's roughly comparable to the delay over HDMI: www.adamwilt.com/fieldmonitor/faq.html#Realtime That's in good conditions, of course; if your Wi-Fi environment is congested or noisy, delay can get worse. Generally speaking your camera's own EVF or LCD will be closest to realtime, though even that image is typically 1 or 2 frames delayed.

  • @MartinClark771

    Very cool...Caleb, is there a function on the app that locks all the controls down, so for instance if I were to hand to a client to watch they wouldn’t be able to fiddle with settings?

    • @Origin8Video
      @Origin8Video 6 лет назад +2

      There is no control lockout, but that's a great idea: I'll add it in the next version. For now, your best best is to set camera controls to hide on a screen tap, tap the screen to hide the controls, and tell the client to keep their greasy digits off the screen. ;-)

      If your iDevice has an A7 or higher CPU, there's built-in false color with adjustable levels. With earlier iDevices you can still load a false-color LUT. See www.adamwilt.com/fieldmonitor/index.html for details. (False color capable iDevices: iPhone 5S and later, iPod touch 6G and later, iPad Air and later, iPad mini 2 and later, and iPad Pro.)
